    Notes: Abstract The prevalence of NIDDM in the «Punjabi» population from north India corroborates the «epidemiological transition» model. Hospital admittees gave a higher prevalence of NIDDM in urban areas (8.2–9.3 percent), as compared to rural areas (2.4 percent), and this difference probably is the outcome of the respective lifestyles. Moreover, urban residents are 3.7 times more likely to develop diabetes than are rural residents. Principal component analysis suggests a high correlation of NIDDM with age, BMI, systolic and diastolic blood pressure. The combined relative risk of diabetes with hypertension as a risk factor was 5.16 (p〈.0001). Findings indicate that a combination of risk factors show significant association with diabetes.

    Notes: Abstract Sixty-nine nonmetrical morphological variants of the cranium have been studied in six samples of non-tribal, state populations in India, and their incidence reported. Using C.A.B. Smith’s angular transformation of frequencies, the multivariate Thetasquare distances and their respective standard deviations have been presented. On the basis of nonmetrical cranial variation, it is clear that the samples from Uttar Pradesh, Andhra Pradesh and Bihar are closer to each other but distant from Madhya Pradesh, Karnataka and Maharashtra. On the other hand, Karnataka and Maharashtra samples are quite close to each other and both, in turn, are comparatively closer to Madhya Pradesh than to Uttar Pradesh, Andhra Pradesh and Bihar. Madhya Pradesh sample emerges as the most divergent group among the six population samples studied. This, in general, is in conformity with the picture that emerges from various analysis of morphometric and other biological data on various populations of India.

    Notes: Summary Inheritance of resistance to cowpea aphid, Aphis craccivora Koch, in three resistant cultivars of cowpea, Vigna unguiculata (L.) Walp, was studied. The parents, F1 and F2 population were grown in an insect-proof screenhouse. Each 3-day-old seedling was infested with 10 apterous adult aphids. Seedling reaction was recorded when the susceptible check was killed. The segregation data revealed that the resistance of ICV11 and TVU310 is governed by single dominant genes. All the F2 seedlings of the cross ICV10xTVU310 were resistant, indicating that they have the same gene for resistance. However, the F2 populations from the crosses ICV10xICV11 and ICV11xTVU310 segregated in a ratio of 15∶1, indicating that the dominant genes in ICV11 and TVU310 are non-allelic and independent of each other. The resistance gene of ICV10 and TVU310 is designated as Ac1 and that of ICV11 as Ac2.

    Notes: Summary Six populations — P1,P2,F1,F2,B1 and B2 — each of five Upland Cotton (Gossypium hirsutum L.) crosses were used to evaluate gene effects in the inheritance of fibre properties by Gamble's six-parameter model for the analysis of generation means. Partial dominance of long fibres over short fibres and of mature fibres over immature fibres was found in the material studied. Overdominance in gene action governed fibre fineness while additive gene action governed the fibre strength. Besides additive and dominance effects, significant epistasis was present in all crosses. These results indicate a significant potential for improving fibre properties through reciprocal recurrent selection.

    Notes: Summary Heterosis (over mid parent) and “useful” heterosis (over commercial variety H14) estimates were obtained from a line x tester analysis of crosses involving thirteen diverse female parents with two locally adapted varieties H14 (local standard) and J34. Marked heterosis was observed for seed cotton yield, boll number and halo length. The values of positive heterosis and “useful” heterosis for seed cotton yield ranged from 28.1 to 87.0% and 20.1 to 45.5%, respectively. The overall study of heterosis revealed that female parents PRS-72 (USSR), 5904F (USSR) and MCU-5 (Madras Cambodian Uganda Selection, Coimbatore) were among the top three females, showing considerable heterosis in crosses with H14 and J34 for seed cotton yield and fibre properties. The practical difficulties in exploiting the phenomenon of heterosis and possible experimental approaches in upland cotton are discussed.

    Notes: Summary Six generations, namely P1, P2, F1, F2, B1 and B2, of five different crosses involving diverse parents, H14 (Local standard), Res H141 (Reselection of H141), 419/49 (Punjab), 5143C (Ceylon) and Banda-I (Africa) on one hand and PRS-72 a cluster type strain on the other, were studied to gain understanding of the genetics of short fruiting branch and cluster boll bearing in upland cotton, Gossypium hirsutum L. Observations were recorded on cluster vs. noncluster normal plants in the first and second filial and B1 and B2 generations. The segregation ratios of cluster: normal boll bearing in the F2 and B2 (test cross) progenies confirmed that the character is monogenic recessive (cl1cl1) in inheritance. Though the penetrance of the gene which controlled cluster boll bearing was complete, its expression varied. As many as 15 different types of ‘cluster’ have been described. Length of cluster bearing sympods varied. On average the sympod lengths in PRS-72 and the cluster type F2 and B2 were 2.13 and 4.54 cm, respectively, suggesting influence of specific modifiers evolved in the cluster donor parent and the different genetic backgrounds. It was suggested that there is a dosage effect of modifiers and interaction of homeologous duplicate allele (Cl2 Cl2) in governing the length of the cluster bearing sympods.

    Notes: Summary Linkage among loci controlling various morphological traits in cowpea were determined using F2 progenies. Data were collected on individual plants of four crosses segregating for several loci. Recombination estimates between the following pairs of loci were as follows: Sw (swollen vs normal stem base)-Fbc (cream vs green flower buds) (41±4.8%), Pus(purple vs green stems)-Cbr (cocoa-brown vs straw-yellow dry pods) (31±5.7%), Pup(purple vs green immature pods)-Cbr (30±5.7%), Pus-Pup (4±1.5%), Ndt (non-determinate vs determinate)-Pd (peduncle colour) (26±2.8%), Ndt-Hg (semi-erect vs erect plant type) (26±2.8%), Pt(purple vs green pod tips)-Bk (greyish-black vs straw-yellow dry pods) (19±2.4%) and Hg-Bpd (normal vs branching peduncle (24±9.5%). Four linkage groups (LG) were identified in these studies. The proposed LG I contained loci Sw and Fbc; LG II loci Pus, Pup, and Cbr; LG III loci Pd, Ndt, Gh, and Bpd; and LG IV loci Ptand Bk.
