Notes: We report an in situ electron diffraction measurement which allows In0.53Ga0.47As to be lattice matched to InP during growth. This method uses analysis of the dynamics of intensity oscillations during electron diffraction to determine when lattice matched growth occurs. With this method we demonstrate closely lattice matched ternary alloys; InGaAs on InP, GaInP on GaAs, and quarternary alloys of InAlGaAs on InP. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: The first measurements of subpicosecond dynamics of carrier capture and decay in Be δ-doped GaAs structures with p-doping density ranging from 6×1012 to 2×1014 cm−2 and spatial distribution on monolayer scale show that photoexcited carriers are captured in the δ-doped layer in 〈1 ps. Luminescence decay rates show a strong dependence on energy of the hole in the two-dimensional Fermi gas. We attribute this to a change in the spatial electron-hole overlap resulting from band-mixing effects. We show that Be density fluctuations lead to strong carrier localization. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: The power loss of electrons in a strongly coupled n-type GaAs/AlxGa1−xAs superlattice is studied by analyzing the temperature and electric-field dependence of the interminiband absorption. Electrons are heated by an electric-field pulse and the resulting change of the infrared absorption spectrum is monitored by a step-scan Fourier transform spectrometer operated in a time-resolved, gated mode. The measured power loss is higher than predicted by a simple three-dimensional calculation including acoustic (deformation potential and piezoelectric) and polar-optical phonon emission. Possible explanations for this, such as relaxation via folded acoustic phonons or coupled plasmon–phonon modes, are discussed. The energy relaxation time, which can be extracted from the power balance, decreases from 300 ps at 15 K to 20 ps at 48 K. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Summary Linkage among loci controlling various morphological traits in cowpea were determined using F2 progenies. Data were collected on individual plants of four crosses segregating for several loci. Recombination estimates between the following pairs of loci were as follows: Sw (swollen vs normal stem base)-Fbc (cream vs green flower buds) (41±4.8%), Pus(purple vs green stems)-Cbr (cocoa-brown vs straw-yellow dry pods) (31±5.7%), Pup(purple vs green immature pods)-Cbr (30±5.7%), Pus-Pup (4±1.5%), Ndt (non-determinate vs determinate)-Pd (peduncle colour) (26±2.8%), Ndt-Hg (semi-erect vs erect plant type) (26±2.8%), Pt(purple vs green pod tips)-Bk (greyish-black vs straw-yellow dry pods) (19±2.4%) and Hg-Bpd (normal vs branching peduncle (24±9.5%). Four linkage groups (LG) were identified in these studies. The proposed LG I contained loci Sw and Fbc; LG II loci Pus, Pup, and Cbr; LG III loci Pd, Ndt, Gh, and Bpd; and LG IV loci Ptand Bk.

Notes: Abstract Zr-2.5 wt% Nb alloy sheet, obtained by unfolding and straightening a pressure tube, was further cold rolled upto 39% reduction in thickness to investigate the effect of cold working on the stress (σ)-strain rate (έ) behaviour over a strain rate range of ∼2 × 10−5 to 5 × 10−3 s−1 and a temperature range of 625 to 700 °C. Irrespective of the amount of rolling, the log σ vs log έ plots exhibit superplastic behaviour with strain rate sensitivity index, m, as high as 0.8, which decreases to 0.2 at higher strain rates. On the other hand, the activation energy for deformation, Q, increases from 171.1 kJ/mol for superplastic deformation to 249 kJ/mol in Region III. The tendency for improved superplasticity (m) is seen upon cold working by 22% or more at the test temperatures 675 and 700 °C.

Notes: A recipe for the accurate calculation of eigenstates of quartic double-well oscillators is presented. The behavior of eigenenergies as a function of the coupling strength is also studied. The quality of the semiclassical (WKB) expression for eigenvalues is critically assessed in this context. The analysis also includes a discussion on the possibility of degeneracy in such one-dimensional systems. © 1995 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

Notes: That the bound energy eigenstates of one-dimensional quantum systems can be degenerate in the presence of specific singular or supersingular potentials is demonstrated by choosing a family of bistable and other oscillators. Relevance of our study to spectroscopic observations is noted. Quasi-degeneracy is found even in the absence of any singularity in the potential and the importance of tunneling is highlighted in this context to analyze the general nature of such potentials leading to double degeneracy. Additionally, the case of spiked oscillators is discussed with particular reference to the “Klauder phenomenon,” revealing clearly that the mere presence of singularity in the potential is not a sufficient criterion for the occurrence of degeneracy. © 1996 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
