Notes: We have developed highly durable organic light-emitting diodes. The basic structure of the diodes is anode/hole injection layer/hole transport layer+dopant/emitter layer+dopant/cathode. Both the hole transport and the emitter layers were doped with the highly fluorescent rubrene molecules. With the doping of both layers, 85% of the initial luminance was successively maintained even after 1000 h of continuous operation under constant current driving. Doping of only one of these layers, either the hole transport layer or emitter layer, on the other hand, resulted in shorter lifetime. We mention the possible mechanisms of the doping that enhance the device duration. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Abstract Seventy patients with intestinal obstruction were managed with usual conservative treatments and epidural anesthesia to block splanchnic and somatic nervous systems, for nine years from 1981 to 1990. Improvement of clinical symptoms and general conditions was accomplished in 48 patients (68.6%). In these 48 patients, 41 patients (58.6%) had complete remission of intestinal obstruction, showing flatus in 8.3 hours on an average, but seven (10.0%) had incomplete remission. For these seven, after improvements of their clinical symptoms, elective radical operations were performed within three weeks. In 22 (31.4%) patients whose symptoms were not improved at all with the epidural block, emergency exploratory celiotomies were performed, 15.4 hours on an average after the initial epidural block. Indications for surgical intervention of intestinal obstruction were decided by the absent movement of gas in the bowel in a series of plain X-rays. The effectiveness of the epidural block on the motility of the obstructed intestinal loop was experimentally confirmed in monkeys. We suggested that the epidural block, accompanied with usual conservative treatments, be recommended as the initial treatment for intestinal obstruction. Notes: Abstract When human T cells were treated with neuraminidase fromVibrio cholerae, the capacity of T cells to form rosettes with autologous erythrocytes was markedly enhanced. The neuraminidase-treated T cells were separated with autologous erythrocytes into autorosetting and nonrosetting cell populations, and these two populations examined for their reactivity to mitogens and B cells and for their regulatory activities. Autorosetting T cells proliferated poorly in response to mitogens and autologous and allogeneic B cells; these cells were particularly enriched for cells capable of becoming concanavalin A-induced suppressor cells. Nonrosetting T cells capable of most actively proliferating in response to the mitogens and the B cells failed to exhibit such suppressor function after concanavalin A activation. Coculture experiments between autorosetting and nonrosetting cells further demonstrated that the nonrosetting T cells were able to potentiate the proliferation of the autorosetting T cells with concomitant expression of the suppressor properties.

Notes: Differential scanning calorimetric melting endotherms of wet and half-dried cellulose acetate membranes and salt distribution coefficients were studied to clarify the states of water in membranes. We have suggested that (a) there are four states of water in cellulose acetate membranes; (b) these states of water are those of completely free water, free water very weakly interacting with polymer, bound water which can contain salts, and bound water which rejects salts; (c) the semipermeability of membranes depends on the ratio of four states of water in membranes.

Notes: The behavior of ions in a cellulose acetate membrane was discussed from the standpoint of mobilities obtained from the membrane potentials. The mobilities of univalent ions larger in radius or divalent ions relative to Na+ ion mobility in the membrane are much different from those in aqueous solutions. The order of the mobilities of ions in the membrane is shown quantitatively. The mobilities of the ions with radii larger than a certain value in the membrane decrease with increase in their size. This could be explained by the physical friction between the ion and the membrane wall. This friction is of importance as the ionic radius comes close to the intermolecular gaps between polymer chains. The mobilities of Na+ anyd 1- ions in the membrane are (2-3) × 10-7 cm2/sec-V and are about three to four orders of magnitude less than those in aqueous solutions.
