Notes: [Auszug] During investigations on the mode of action of vancomycin (free base) on S. aureus it was found that after its addition to a logarithmic-phase culture both nephelos and optical density readings continued to increase for a period of about 60 min., although at a reduced rate. Notes: [Auszug] In agreement with the results of Williams on the stannic chloride catalysed reaction, we find that (1) the polystyrene formed is equivalent to the mono-styrene consumed, (2) the polymers formed are of low molecular weight, (3) the overall activation energy appears to be small. On the other hand, ...

Notes: The fabrication of molecular beam "skimmers" from electrical discharge machining (EDM) graphite is reported. EDM graphite is highly refractory and is easily machined using conventional cutting and grinding techniques. In its most fine-grained form, EDM graphite can be machined free-standing to a knife-edge lip radius of ∼1 μm, providing excellent skimmer aerodynamics. Being refractory, such EDM skimmers are of particular interest in sampling or collimating high-temperature plasma discharges. Our explicit application is in skimming an electrical discharge supersonic free-jet of molecular nitrogen, forming a molecular beam of A 3Σu+ metastable N2 to be used in the heteroepitaxial growth of III–N wide-band-gap semiconductors. In view of the their economy, ease of manufacture, and excellent aerodynamics, the skimmers may also find use in skimming conventional, nondischarge supersonic free-jets. The performance of the EDM skimmers was tested in a conventional helium supersonic free-jet expansion, measuring the time-of-flight distribution and beam intensity as a function of nozzle pressure and nozzle-skimmer separation. Direct comparison with commercial nickel and copper skimmers showed the EDM graphite skimmers to perform nearly as well as the best commercial metal skimmers. The refractory properties of the skimmers were tested in a high-temperature arc-discharge supersonic free-jet expansion of 10% nitrogen in argon. Exposure to a plasma plume of ∼7500 K for over 6 h produced only relatively minor deterioration of the EDM graphite skimmer. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: A commonly-encountered circumstance of technical progress is the existence of a phase during which a formerly neglected observation attracts widespread attention. This may follow on some unrelated event such as an unanticipated need or a dispute, in which material previously obscure suddenly rises in importance. The skin-effect1 in wires was such a dormant issue before 1886. Its existence had been realised by theorists such as Heaviside, Lamb and Maxwell and no doubt, if left to itself, it would in time have found its natural place in the theoretical architecture then being created. However, a Presidential Address made in January, 1886, to the Society of Telegraph Engineers and Electricians by David Edward Hughes gave a sudden impetus to the study of self-inductive phenomena. Hughes's results appeared as a weighty and public challenge to theoretical expectations and provoked an extensive and year-long period of criticism and discussion, during which the skin-effect emerged as a central issue. His experiments and interpretations were to a large, extent discredited and have come to be regarded rather as a scientific solecism, but nevertheless the effects of the debate on the practical applications of electromagnetism were very far-reaching. The skin-effect remained a paradigmatic case in electromagnetic theory, but also the obvious practical implications revealed in the debate imposed upon electrical engineers the need to revise their conceptualisation of the subject and to reevaluate the status of mathematical theory in practical matters. This paper describes the events, mainly of the year 1886, which initiated the tortuous promotion of self-induction to the status of a governing principle in electrical communications.

Notes: Plant responses to elevated atmospheric CO2 have been characterized generally by stomatal closure and enhanced growth rates. These responses are being increasingly incorporated into global climate models that quantify interactions between the biosphere and atmosphere, altering climate predictions from simpler physically based models. However, current information on CO2 responses has been gathered primarily from studies of crop and temperate forest species. In order to apply responses of vegetation to global predictions, CO2 responses in other commonly occurring biomes must be studied. A Free Air CO2 Enrichment (FACE) study is currently underway to examine plant responses to high CO2 in a natural, undisturbed Mojave Desert ecosystem in Nevada, USA. Here we present findings from this study, and its companion glasshouse experiment, demonstrating that field-grown Ephedra nevadensis and glasshouse-grown Larrea tridentata responded to high CO2 with reductions in the ratio of transpirational surface area to sapwood area (LSR) of 33% and 60%, respectively. Thus, leaf-specific hydraulic conductivity increased and stomatal conductance remained constant or was increased under elevated CO2. Field-grown Larrea did not show a reduced LSR under high CO2, and stomatal conductance was reduced in the high CO2 treatment, although the effect was apparent only under conditions of unusually high soil moisture. Both findings suggest that the common paradigm of 20–50% reductions in stomatal conductance under high CO2 may not be applicable to arid ecosystems under most conditions.

Notes: The distribution and quantification of opioid receptor types in post-mortem human pituitary cryostat sections was determined by quantitative in vitro receptor autoradiography. Highly specific radioligands were used for each opioid receptor type, i.e. [125I]-FK-33-824 for μ-opioid sites, [125I][D.Ala2]-Deltorphin-I for δ-opioid sites and 3H-U69,593 for κ-opioid sites.None of the five specimens tested exhibited any labelling in the anterior lobe of the pituitary for the three radioligands. As for the posterior pituitary, all 5 specimens contained both μ and κ-opioid binding sites whereas none of them showed δ-binding sites. The presence of both μ- and κ-opioid binding sites in the human posterior pituitary contrasts with previous findings in the rat where only κ-sites have been found. The present study could contribute to understanding of the functional action of opioids in the human pituitary.
