Notes: Abstract Spectrum scans of the head of Comet Bradfield (1980t) covering the wavelength range λλ365–640 nm were made on two nights when the heliocentric distance of the comet varied from 0.55 to 0.58 AU. The emission features of the CN band at λ388 nm and Swan band sequence of C2 at λ474 nm, λ516 nm, and λ563 nm are identified and absolute fluxes in these bands as well as in the continuum are derived. The continuum energy distribution curves of the comet have been compared with those of the Sun and the star β Crv (G5 III). An estimate of the number of C2 and CN molecules in the head of the comet has been made through the measured intensities of their respective bands lying in this region.

Notes: Abstract U, B, V photometry of the eclipsing binary DX Aqr has been presented for the first time. The period of the system comes out to be nearly half the period given by Strohmeier (1966) and a value of Od.472502 has been determined. The colour of the system has been discussed. The primary eclipse is a total occulation. The orbit seems to be eccentric. The system belongs to Algol type. DX Aqr may be a very complicated system. The present results are considerably different from those of earlier investigations.

Notes: Abstract The problem of estimating the common mean μ of k independent and univariate inverse Gaussian populations IG(μ, λ i ), i=1,..., k with unknown and unequal λ's is considered. The difficulty with the maximum likelihood estimator of μ is pointed out, and a natural estimator % MathType!MTEF!2!1!+-% feaafeart1ev1aaatCvAUfeBSjuyZL2yd9gzLbvyNv2CaerbuLwBLn% hiov2DGi1BTfMBaeXafv3ySLgzGmvETj2BSbqefm0B1jxALjhiov2D% aebbfv3ySLgzGueE0jxyaibaiiYdd9qrFfea0dXdf9vqai-hEir8Ve% ea0de9qq-hbrpepeea0db9q8as0-LqLs-Jirpepeea0-as0Fb9pgea% 0lrP0xe9Fve9Fve9qapdbaqaaeGacaGaaiaabeqaamaabaabcaGcba% acciGaf8hVd0MbaGaaaaa!3D38!\[\tilde \mu \] of μ along the lines of Graybill and Deal is proposed. Notes: Abstract The Ways of Coping Questionnaire (Folkman & Lazarus, 1988) yields eight scales which purport to measure eight unique coping styles. Using Multi-Dimensional Scaling (MDS) this study seeks to find the underlying dimensional structure of the Ways of Coping Questionnaire, using three samples: (1) Folkman and Lazarus' normative sample (1988, N = 150), (2) a Canadian normative sample (N = 385; Sinha, Willson, Madhukar, & Watson, unpublished manuscript), (3) an East Indian sample (N = 199; Sinha et al. , unpublished manuscript). Analysis yields one interpretable dimension which appears to be effective/ineffective coping strategies. To provide a more rigorous comparison, Spearman's rank-order correlations of the MDS solutions were examined, and confirmatory factor analysis was performed on the eight scales. Some cultural differences are noted between the Canadian normal sample and the Indian sample: although the effective/ineffective dimension is supported across cultures, rank-ordering of the MDS loadings of the eight scales shows that there is only a small correlation between the loadings of these two samples.

Notes: Micellar catalyzed polymerization of acrylonitrile using ceric(IV)-glycerol redox system in aqueous sulfuric acid solution in the presence of sodium lauryl sulfate (NaLS) has been studied. The polymerization experiments were conducted between 15°C and 25°C, under conditions where no oxidation of sodium lauryl sulfate by ceric ion would we expected. The rate of polymerization (Rp) increases with increasing concentration of NaLS. The rate of monomer (AN) disappearance was proportional to [AN]1.5 and [glycerol]0.5, but, however, Rp changes in a nonlinear manner with increase in Ce(IV) concentration in the presence of the surfactant. The rate of Ce(IV) disappearance was not proportional to its original concentration. The chain length of the polymer could not be determined viscometrically, as the polymer obtained in presence of NaLS was insoluble in organic solvents. The activation energy of this polymerization process was calculated by conducting the experiment at different temperatures. The infrared spectra of the polymers in the presence and absence of surfactant have also been examined.

Notes: Polymerization of methyl methacrylate (MMA) using Ce(IV) as initiator in aqueous nitric acid solution in the presence of sodium lauryl sulphate (NaLS) has been studied kinetically at a temperature range of 25-35°C. The rate of polymerization (Rp) increases with increasing concentration of NaLS, and it was also proportional to [MMA]2; but, in the presence of NaLS, the change of Rp with respect to [Ce(IV)] and [H+] were not linear and similarly the rate of Ce(IV) disappearance was not proportional to its original concentration. The overall activation energy of the polymerization process in presence of 0.01M NaLS was found to decrease by ∼ 7.0 kcal mol-1. The monomer-micelle association constant has been calculated to be 5.135 × 104 mol-1 L. The polymer obtained in surfactant medium is sparingly soluble in benzene and DMSO. From infrared spectra clear evidence of vinyl polymerization was obtained.

Notes: The polymerization of acrylonitrile (AN) using the Ce(IV)-citric acid (CA) redox system as an initiator in aqueous nitric acid solution, in the presence of an anionic surfactant, sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS), has been kinetically studied at a temperature range of 25-45°C. The rate of polymerization (Rp) and disappearance of Ce(IV) (-Rce) increase with increasing concentration of SDS, above its critical micelle concentration (cmc), when the surfactant molecules are organized. Rp was found to be proportional to [AN]1.5 and [CA]0.5. With other organic substrates, Rp follows the increasing order of sorbitol ≥ mannitol 〉 glycerol 〉 CA. But it was found to decrease considerably in the presence of cationic surfactant (CTAB), and nonionic surfactant (Triton-X-100) had no effect on the rate. -Rce varies linearly with [Ce(IV)] and [CA]. Both Rp and -Rce increase with increasing temperature. The overall activation energy was found to be 18.31 and 13.72 kcal/mol in the absence and presence of 0.015M SDS, respectively. The chain length of the polyacrylonitrile has also increased with increasing SDS concentration. © 1996 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
