    Notizen: The structural and magnetic properties of ternary nitride compounds R2(Fe1−xCox)17N3−δ with R=Ce, Pr, and Nd have been studied. X-ray diffraction results show that nitrides are formed in a limited range of x in each series and the rhombohedral Th2Zn17 structure of their parent compounds is retained with an expansion in the unit cell volume. The room temperature saturation magnetization of nitrides is greater than that of the parent compounds for low Co concentrations. The 3d sublattice anisotropy is modified upon nitrogenation. All of the terminal compounds R2Fe17N3−δ have their easy direction of magnetization in the basal plane. However, easy direction of magnetization shifts from planar to axial for x≈0.5 in the R2(Fe1−xCox)17 series with R=Ce and Pr. This planar to axial transition of easy direction of magnetization shifts towards lower x (x≈0.15) in the nitride series R2(Fe1−xCox)17N3−δ for R=Ce, and is not observed for R=Pr and Nd. The results are interpreted in terms of enhancements in competing 3d sublattice (axial) and R sublattice (planar) anisotropies on nitrogenation, with Ce being essentially in the nonmagnetic intermediate valence state.

    Notizen: The NdFe10−xCoxMO2 alloy system (x=0,1,3,5,7,10) has been synthesized and studied by x-ray and magnetometry techniques. All of the compounds in this series crystallize in the tetragonal ThMn12-type structure. X-ray-diffraction analyses on aligned powders indicate that the anisotropy in this system is strongly modified by Co substitution. A distinctive feature we observe is that, with increasing Co content, the easy direction of magnetization at 300 K appears to deviate from the c axis for x≤3, and becomes axial for x≥5. The spin reorientations are observed for x=0,1,3. For x≥5, the room-temperature anisotropy field increases with the increase of Co content, i.e., from 18 kOe at x=5 to 34 kOe at x=10, and no spin reorientations are observed. The first-order magnetization process is observed for x≥5. The Curie temperature is considerably enhanced by Co substitution in this system.

    Notizen: Commercially supplied SQUID magnetometers which provide the best sensitivity (10−8 emu) are becoming more popular for routine magnetic property measurements. However, these magnetometers generally provide a very small usable sample space (9 mm) and a maximum field limited to 5.5 T. The sensitivity of SQUID magnetometers drops with increasing magnetic fields strengths and becomes comparable to or lesser than the sensitivity of Faraday magnetometers at a field of 5.5 T (5×10−5 emu). Therefore, Faraday magnetometers are a better choice, if a high sensitivity in high magnetic fields is required and/or a large sample space is needed, for example, to accommodate a pressure clamp for high pressure measurements. We have constructed a Faraday magnetometer which facilitates the measurements under high pressure conditions (up to 20 kbars in Cu–Be clamps) and in fields up to 13 T in a 24 mm warm bore (1.3–300 K) and 45 mm cold bore. To accommodate the weight of the pressure clamp, the magnetometer is equipped with a microbalance of extended weighing capacity (100 g) with a sensitivity of 10−6 g. Its superconducting magnet was specially designed to have a gradient such that the product H dH/dz remains nearly constant over a cylindrical sample volume of 20 mm×50 mm, which is the typical size of our pressure clamps. The details of pressure clamps will also be discussed.

    Notizen: We have synthesized a new Fe-rich material, NdFe13−xBex (x=2–5) that crystallizes in the NaZn13 type cubic structure. Structural and magnetic properties of this material have been investigated. Stabilization of the single phase NaZn13 type cubic structure is limited to x=2–4. The magnetic properties of this system are quite complex, as anomalously low magnetic moments are observed in this system, and no saturation is achieved in M versus μ0H measurements in fields up to 5 T. The magnetization decreases as the content of Fe increases; such behavior is typical for the Invar alloys. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

    Notizen: A device structure composed primarily of a film made from colossal magnetoresistive (CMR) material and a permanent magnet (PM) film used for biasing the CMR film is proposed as a sensor for magnetic objects. The PM film provides a magnetic field through the CMR film, which is substantially decreased when a magnetic object approaches the device, as part of the magnetic flux is now diverted through the object. To test the feasibility of this concept, we performed simulations of the magnetic field distribution with a three-dimensional finite boundary program. Our vertical model structure consists of a strip of CMR material covered by a PM strip with magnetic in-plane texture and magnetized along its width. The maximum possible biasing field through the CMR material is mainly controlled by the thickness to width ratio of the PM material and cannot be improved by the use of a soft magnetic cladding. The same effect is observed on the flux reduction by approaching a magnetic object. Preliminary results on an experimental realization of the device are given. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

    Notizen: Films of Sm–Co have been sputtered on heated polycrystalline Al2O3 substrates. The effect of variations of the Sm content on microstructure and hard magnetic properties was studied for otherwise constant process parameters. As generally observed, the samples possess a magnetic texture where the easy magnetization directions of the grains lay preferably in the film plane. For a lower Sm content the TbCu7-type structure is stabilized and for a higher Sm content the CaCu5-type structure is stabilized. The crossover occurs for a Sm content of around 17 at. %. Consistent with the changes in the intrinsic properties, coercivity increases and remanence decreases with increasing the Sm content. The grain size increases with increasing the Sm content and is attributed to a higher surface mobility during crystallization and grain growth. This behavior is also assumed to cause the improvement in the in-plane texture with increasing the Sm content, that had been quantified by magnetic and crystallographic investigations.© 1999 American Institute of Physics.

    Notizen: The structural and magnetic properties of YFe10−xCoxMo2 alloys (0≤x≤10) have been investigated by means of x-ray diffraction, thermomagnetic analysis, and magnetometry techniques. All the alloys exhibited the tetragonal ThMn12 structure and were almost single phase materials. With the increase of Co content x, Tc increases initially, reaching a maximum at x∼6, followed by a decrease at higher x values. X-ray diffraction analyses on magnetically aligned samples indicate that YFe10Mo2 exhibits an axial easy direction of magnetization (EDM) at room temperature, and the addition of Co initially causes the EDM to deviate gradually from the c axis with increasing x (x≤4). On further increase of Co content (x≥5), the EDM of the YFe10−xCoxMo2 compounds tends to become axial again, reaching a complete uniaxial behavior for the terminal compound YCo10Mo2.

    Notizen: The effects of Co substitution on magnetic anisotropy and spin reorientation phenomena have been investigated in the DyFe10−xCoxMo2 and ErFe10−xCoxMo2 (x=0 to 10) series in the temperature range from 4.2 to 300 K. X-ray diffraction patterns on aligned samples indicated that the easy direction of magnetization (EDM) of the DyFe10−xCoxMo2 series is along the c axis at room temperature for all values of x. The spin reorientations were observed for all samples in the DyFe10−xCoxMo2 series except for x=10, and the spin reorientation temperature, Tsr, decreases with the increase of Co content x. The magnetic phase diagram of DyFe10−xCoxMo2 has been constructed. These results, together with the results from the YFe10−xCoxMo2 series, may lead to the conclusion that the anisotropy of Dy sublattice changes from planar to axial in the DyFe10−xCoxMo2 series with the increase of Co content. The EDM in the ErFe10−xCoxMo2 series was found to be nonaxial for 2≤x≤6 for all temperatures below Tc. For x〈2 and x(approximately-greater-than)6 the ErFe10−xCoxMo2 compounds exhibit an axial EDM at room temperature, and spin reorientations occur at about 210 K for x=8 and at 140 K for x=10. Since Er and Dy have opposite sign of second-order Stevens factor, the above results of two systems are consistent.

    Notizen: Pulsed laser deposition using bulk NiOFe2O3 targets onto heated substrates has been used to synthesize single phase Ni spinel ferrite films onto various substrates. Flowing oxygen has been used during the deposition to maintain the oxygen stoichiometry. Ni ferrite films have been deposited onto C-, R-, and A-plane sapphire, polycrystalline Al2O3, and fused silica. Single-crystal (111) oriented NiOFe2O3 films have been made onto C-plane sapphire for substrate temperatures of greater than 900 °C. Polycrystalline highly (400) textured Ni ferrite films have been made onto R-plane sapphire with I(400)/I(311)=6.15. Films made onto A-plane sapphire, polycrystalline alumina, and fused silica showed only moderate texturing. The coercive force of the (111) oriented NiOFe2O3 was 120 Oe perpendicular to the film plane and 95 Oe in plane. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.
