Notes: A new type of variable-frequency radio-frequency quadrupole (RFQ) linac has been constructed as a new preinjector for the RIKEN heavy-ion linac (RILAC). The RFQ resonator, based on a folded-coaxial structure with a movable shorting plate, is compact even in a low frequency region below 20 MHz. It accelerates ions with mass-to-charge ratios of 5.3 to 26.4 in the energy range up to 450 keV per charge, by varying its resonant frequency from 17.4 to 39.0 MHz. Moreover, the power loss is small in the low frequency region; the rf power consumption in cw mode is 7 kW at 17.4 MHz, and it increases to 30 kW at 39.0 MHz at the maximum intervane voltage of 36.8 kV. We initiated this project in 1991, and installed the new preinjector consisting of an electron cyclotron resonance ion source of 18 GHz and this RFQ in 1996. Since the installation, the beam intensity has become larger by more than 1 order of magnitude than that formerly obtained with the Cockcroft–Walton preinjector. Recently, the maximum power of the beam extracted from the RILAC and that from the ring cyclotron has reached 560 W and 2 kW, respectively. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: We successfully produced intense beams of highly charged metallic ions from various kinds of organic metallic compounds by the metal ions from volatile compounds method and solid materials in RIKEN 18 GHz electron cyclotron resonance ion source (ECRIS) (e.g., 135 eμA of Fe11+, 80 eμA of Fe13+, 10 eμA of Os29+, and 1 eμA of Os37+). Using this ECRIS the ion confinement time of highly charged ions was determined under the pulsed mode operation. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Alternating current losses in stacks of powder-in-tube-processed Bi2Sr2Ca2Cu3O10/Ag tapes were measured in perpendicular magnetic fields and compared with calculated hysteresis losses based on the critical-state model. Four main factors had to be taken into account for the calculations of the losses: (1) the inclusion of the area of the Ag sheath in determining the critical-current densities of the stacks, (2) the zero-applied-field critical currents Ic⊥(0) with truly perpendicular fields only, not the standard self-field critical current IcS(0), and (3) the field-dependent critical current Ic(H), e.g., the Kim's model, and (4) the subtraction of the frequency-dependent losses at very high fields. With these considerations, the agreement between the calculated and the measured values of the losses is excellent for fields beyond the full-penetration fields. However, these factors did not totally account for the low-field losses. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: The power loss (Pcv) was analyzed by combining two methods. The first, Pcv, is divided into hysteresis loss (Ph) and residual loss (Pr) from the frequency dependence of the power loss according to the method of Otsuki et al., and, second, the loss factors are attributed to domain wall motion (Pw) and the rotation magnetization (Prot) by adapting the method proposed by Visser et al. It was found that Pw coincides with Ph in the lower frequency range, but the difference between them becomes significant as frequency goes up. The higher value of Pw, in comparison with Ph in the higher frequency range, can be attributed to the enhancement of loss due to the dynamic motion of the domain wall (Pwd) by raising the frequency. The hysteresis loss dominates Pcv in the frequency range below 500 kHz, while Pwd becomes predominant factor in the higher frequency range more than 500 kHz. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Absorption, emission, and excitation spectra of Ce-doped Gd2 SiO5 have been measured. The emission spectrum is decomposed into two Gaussian bands corresponding to the transitions from Ce3+ 5d 2 T2 to two 4f levels of 2 F7/2 and 2 F5/2 . It is found that the energy difference between ground 2 F5/2 and 2 F7/2 levels varies from 2004 to 1326 cm−1 with increasing Ce concentration from 0.2% to 1%. Concentration quenching is weak in Ce-doped Gd2 SiO5 compared with that in the laser and fluorescent materials. The energy-level structure is determined for Ce3+ in Gd2 SiO5 based on the analyses of the optical spectra. The spectral characteristics indicate that the Ce-doped Gd2 SiO5 crystal is suitable for the application to the scintillation detector.

Notes: Background : The treatment of functional dyspepsia is controversial.Aim : The purpose of this paper is to clarify the initial effect of prokinetic, acid suppression and antianxiety treatment for functional dyspepsia patients.Patients and methods : Sixty-four functional dyspepsia patients without Helicobacter pylori infection were randomly assigned to 15 mg/day of mosapride, 40 mg/day of famotidine, or 30 mg/day of tandospirone during an 8-week treatment. Individual functional dyspepsia symptoms were evaluated with 4 cm visual analogue scale before and at 2, 4 and 8 weeks after treatment. Results : Among 64 enrolled patients, 62 completed the study. Within 2 weeks, visual analogue scale score in the mosapride-treated group decreased from 2.29 ±0.14 to 1.57 ± 0.20; in the famotidine from 2.04 ± 0.16 to 1.09 ± 0.12 (mean ± S.E.). Therefore, there were significant improvements of functional dyspepsia symptoms in mosapride- and famotidine-treated patients (P 〈0.01). Furthermore, famotidine was significantly more effective than mosapride (P 〈 0.05). On the contrary, visual analogue scale score in the tandospirone therapy was 2.23 ± 0.20 and 2.13 ± 0.22 before and at 2 weeks, respectively, without any significant improvement. Conclusions : A treatment regimen of famotidine at 40 mg/day had a significant favourable effect on the clinical outcome in functional dyspepsia patients.

Notes: Gastrin is known to have stimulatory effects on gastric mucosa; however, long-term effect of gastrin stimulation is not well known.〈section xml:id="abs1-2"〉〈title type="main"〉Aim and methods:To investigate the long-term effect of hypergastrinaemia, we established hypergastrinaemic transgenic mice by introducing a mutated human gastrin gene. Homozygously transgene-expressing mice showed serum gastrin levels of more than 600 pg/mL.〈section xml:id="abs1-3"〉〈title type="main"〉Results:Neither progastrin nor glycine-extended gastrin titre elevation were observed in hypergastrinaemic transgenic mice. Stomachs from the 30–35-week-old transgenic mice were 30–50% heavier and their mucosa were markedly thicker than those of the controls. The hypertrophic gastric mucosa of hypergastrinaemic transgenic mice consisted of elongated pits with widespread proliferative zones, and comprised depleted glandular regions. In situ hybridization study indicated that expression of H, K-ATPase mRNA in parietal cells of hypergastrinaemic transgenic mice was markedly decreased. By gastrin binding assay in vivo, specific gastrin binding sites were observed in the mid-glandular region of hypergastrinaemic transgenic mice that consisted mainly of prepit cells.〈section xml:id="abs1-4"〉〈title type="main"〉Conclusions:These results suggest that long-term stimulation of gastrin increases the expression of CCK-B/gastrin receptors in the less-differentiated pit cells that are the main component of elongated gastric units, and lessens the well-differentiated characteristics of parietal cells.
