    Notizen: This article is about microwave reflectometry—a radar technique for plasma density measurements using the reflection of electromagnetic waves by a plasma cutoff. Both the theoretical foundations of reflectometry and its practical application to the study of magnetically confined plasmas are reviewed in this article. In particular, the role of short-scale density fluctuations is discussed at length, both as a unique diagnostic tool for turbulence studies in thermonuclear plasmas, and for the deleterious effects that fluctuations may have on the measurement of the average plasma density with microwave reflectometry. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.

    Notizen: This article describes a numerical study of the role played by two-dimensional turbulent fluctuations in microwave reflectometry—a radar technique for density measurements using the reflection of electromagnetic waves from a plasma cutoff. The results indicate that, if the amplitude of fluctuations is below a threshold which is set by the spectrum of poloidal wave numbers, the measured backward field appears to originate from a virtual location behind the reflecting layer, and to arise from the phase modulation of the probing wave, with an amplitude given by one-dimensional geometric optics. These results suggest a possible scheme for turbulence measurements in tokamaks, where the backward field is collected with a wide aperture antenna, and the virtual reflecting layer is imaged onto the plane of an array of detectors. Such a scheme should be capable of providing additional information on the nature of the short-scale turbulence observed in tokamaks, which still remains one of the unresolved issues in fusion research. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.

    Notizen: Many anomalous features observed in reflectometer measurements of turbulent fluctuations in tokamak plasmas, such as loss of coherent reflection, large amplitude fluctuations, large angular divergence of the reflected waves, and correlation lengths of the order of the free-space wavelength of the probe beam, can be explained by modeling the plasma fluctuations as a poloidally varying random phase grating located at the cutoff with a phase magnitude given by 1D geometric optics. A key result of this analysis is that the turbulence spectrum cannot be inferred from phase measurements when large amplitude fluctuations are observed at the receiver. However, the turbulence spectrum may still be recovered from phase measurements by use of imaging optics and wide angle phase sensitive receivers. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

    Notizen: A microwave reflectometer is in operation on TFTR for the measurement of density fluctuations. The system operates in the X mode and comprises three channels with fixed frequencies of 140, 132, and 125 GHz, and one with stepped frequency of 111–123 GHz. All channels use solid state Gunn oscillators and a heterodyne detection scheme. The system is located outside of the TFTR test cell with the power conveyed to the tokamak vessel by low-loss corrugated waveguides and remotely controlled parabolic mirrors. Preliminary results indicate that the level of density fluctuations with k⊥ 〈1 cm−1 is very small in the central region of Ohmic plasmas (ñ/n〈10−3), and that it increases monotonically with minor radius to values of ≈10−2 at r/a=0.9.     Notizen: After more than 4 decades of fusion research, plasma transport in tokamaks remains an outstanding issue. The standard hypothesis, that the observed anomalous transport is caused by small scale turbulence, is consistent with experimental observations, but it is neither based on a self-consistent theory of plasma turbulence nor on an exhaustive set of turbulence measurements. One of the major obstacles to the development of a satisfactory anomalous transport theory is the inability of standard fluctuation diagnostics to provide the full spectrum of turbulent fluctuations. The result is a nearly complete reliance on numerical simulations. Unfortunately, in spite of the enormous capabilities of today's computers, this is extremely unsatisfactory since any theory or simulation of plasma turbulence can only be driven by direct experimental observations. The first step in achieving such data was the highly successful UC Davis Electron Cyclotron Emission (ECE) Imaging system, which was first developed for use on the TEXT-U tokamak and later modified for use on the Rijnhuizen Tokamak Project tokamak.1 Here, correlation techniques are applied to spatially resolved second harmonic ECE signals to provide detailed information about the microturbulence associated with Te fluctuations. The present work extends this work by developing a similar technique for spatially resolved ne fluctuations via microwave imaging reflectometry. The result is a diagnostic capable of the simultaneous measurement of both Te and ne fluctuations (both turbulent and coherent) and profiles on toroidal devices such as tokamaks and stellarators. A 16 channel ECE imaging system has recently been installed on the Torus Experiment for Technology Oriented Research (TEXTOR) tokamak. A prototype millimeter wave imaging reflectometry system will be installed on TEXTOR in July 2000, which will operate in V band (50–75 GHz) and reflect from the X-mode cutoff. Data collected with this system will be utilized in the design of the full three- dimensional (3D) imaging system, which is scheduled for installation on TEXTOR in April 2001. System details and laboratory characterization results of the prototype reflectometric imaging system will be presented, along with a preliminary design for the full 3D system. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

    Notizen: The application of microwave reflectometry to the study of fast magnetosonic waves in the Tokamak Fusion Test Reactor (TFTR) is investigated. Assuming the validity of geometric optics for reflectometer measurements, it is shown that linearity to the fast wave amplitude is restricted to very small density fluctuation levels (ñ/n〈10−3). Beyond this level, both phase and amplitude ambiguities occur that makes interpretation difficult. Measurements of 30 MHz fast magnetosonic waves in the core of TFTR plasmas are presented. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

    Notizen: Perturbative experiments on the Tokamak Fusion Test Reactor [Phys. Plasmas 4, 1736 (1997)] (TFTR) have investigated transport in reverse shear plasmas. On TFTR, reverse magnetic shear plasmas bifurcate into two states with different transport properties: reverse shear (RS) and enhanced reverse shear (ERS) with improved core confinement. Measurements of the 14 MeV t(d,n)α neutrons and charge-exchange recombination radiation spectra are used to infer the trace tritium and helium profiles, respectively. The profile evolution indicate the formation of core particle transport barriers in ERS plasmas. The transport barrier is manifested by an order-of-magnitude reduction in the particle diffusivity (DT,DHe) and a smaller reduction in the pinch within the reverse shear region. The low diffusivities are consistent with neoclassical predictions. Furthermore, DT and DHe(approximate)χeff, the effective thermal diffusivity. Although the measured coefficients imply no helium ash accumulation, the situation is uncertain in a reactor due to unknown χeff scaling.
