Notizen: The property of extreme ultraviolet (EUV) generation from Xe clusters irradiated with intense lasers was studied. The Xe cluster jet was well characterized by the interferometric method. In order to obtain the adequate irradiation condition for strong EUV generation, EUV spectra were taken with various laser systems. Then, the wavelength, the pulse width, and the pump energy were widely varied. Through this survey, even with the comparatively low-density Xe jet of ≤5×1018 cm−3 average atomic density, the highest conversion efficiency of over 10% from laser energy to EUV (5–18 nm) was obtained with a subpicosecond KrF laser pulse, where a 4π source was assumed. This EUV source is considered to be attractive as an EUV lithography light source because of its low average atomic density and small Xe cluster. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

Notizen: InSb films have been deposited directly by rf sputtering on sapphire substrates. X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy data are presented to show that the InSb layer on sapphire (0001) is epitaxial and grows with (111) parallel to the substrate surface. Optical absorption studies of the epitaxial film also reveal distinct spectral features which resemble these from bulk, single-crystal InSb.

Notizen: 100 TW light from the Petawatt Module (PWM) laser illuminated a preimploded spherical deuterated polystyrene(CD) shell target. The DD neutron yield increased from 2.5×105–106. Analysis indicates that hundreds of keV deuterons, generated around the critical density, collide with cold fuel deuterons and play the leading role in the enhancement of the neutron yield. A two-dimensional particle-in-cell (2D PIC) simulation predicted well the deuteron spectrum. A 60 TW laser was used for MeV proton emissions and megagauss magnetic fields generation on the rear surface of a Poly p-xylene(C8H8) plane target. The 2D PIC simulation explained well the results. The PWM laser was upgraded to one PW, making it the world biggest Petawatt laser (PW laser). An optically parametric chirped amplification was introduced in the front end. The pulse was synchronized to the GEKKO XII imploding beams to within 10 ps. © 2002 American Institute of Physics.

Notizen: The ion heat pulse after a sawtooth crash is studied by a time-of-flight (TOF) neutral measurement. A rapid change of the bulk ion energy distribution near the edge is observed after a sawtooth crash. The delay time is measured, and the effective measuring position is estimated by a neutral transport code. Then a transient ion thermal conductivity, χiHP, of about (7–18) m2/s is evaluated for the low confinement mode (L-mode) plasma. The simple diffusive model with constant χiHP, however, does not explain the amplitude of the pulse in the ion energy distribution. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

Notizen: Laser plasma interactions in a relativistic parameter regime have been intensively investigated for studying the possibility of fast ignition in inertial confinement fusion (ICF). Using ultra-intense laser systems and particle-in-cell (PIC) simulation codes, relativistic laser light self-focusing, super hot electrons, ions, and neutron production, are studied. The experiments are performed with ultra-intense laser with 50 J energy, 0.5–1 ps pulse at 1053 nm laser wavelength at a laser intensity of 1019 W/cm2. Most of the laser shots are studied under preformed plasma conditions with a 100 μm plasma scale length condition. In the study of laser pulse behavior in the preformed plasmas, a special mode has been observed which penetrated the preformed plasma all the way very close to the original planar target surface. On these shots, super hot electrons have been observed with its energy peak exceeding 1 MeV. The energy transport of the hot electrons has been studied with making use of Kα emissions from a seeded metal layer in planar targets. The details of ion acceleration followed by beam fusion reaction have been studied with neutron spectrometers. Laser ponderomotive force self-focusing and hot electron generation have been applied to a compressed core to see the effect of heating by injecting 12 beams of 100 ps, 1 TW pulses. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

Notizen: Parameter dependence of the radial structure of edge poloidal rotation is studied with spectroscopic measurements for L- and H-mode plasmas in the JFT-2M tokamak [Y. Miura et al., in Plasma Physics and Controlled Nuclear Fusion Research, Proceedings of the 13th International Conference, Washington 1990 (IAEA, Vienna, 1991), Vol. 1, p. 325]. The poloidal flow is in the electron diamagnetic direction and appears suddenly near the plasma edge at the H-mode transition. The poloidal rotation velocity profile in the H mode has a peak at the separatrix. No critical normalized ion collisionality, ν*i, for the transition of the L to the H mode is observed. The size of the poloidal flow in the H mode has no dependence on the poloidal gyroradius.

Notizen: AlGaAs graded-index separate-confinement heterostructure lasers with lateral mode confinement are realized by one time metalorganic chemical vapor deposition with silicon dioxide stripes as selective masks and current blocking layers. The effect of the active region width on lasing characteristics is investigated. The threshold current and external quantum efficiency are around 12 mA and 70%, respectively, for narrow lasers. Elevated waveguide structure formed by the growth-rate difference between (100) and sidewall planes was effective for stable lateral mode characteristics.

Notizen: Background: CXC chemokines such as interleukin (IL)-8 are neutrophil chemoattractants, the levels of which increase in Helicobacter pylori-infected gastric mucosa. Many investigators have focused on the chemotactic aspects of IL-8; however, CXC chemokines are also reported to have angiogenic activity and to serve as remodelling factors. Rat GRO/CINC-1 is a rodent counterpart of human GROα, a member of the family of CXC chemokines. Gastric mucosa infected with H. pylori is in a state of hyperproliferation, with increases in the amounts of growth factors such as hepatocyte growth factor (HGF). Aim: To investigate whether rat GRO/CINC-1 had growth-stimulating activity for gastric epithelial cells. Methods: The rat gastric epithelial cell line RGM-1 was incubated in serum-free medium for 12 h to adjust the cell cycle to the G0 phase, and GRO/CINC-1 was then added for 24 h. The total cell number was determined by fluorogenic analysis after propidium iodide staining, and cell proliferation was assessed by measuring 5-bromo-2′-deoxyuridine (BrdU) incorporation. The activity of p42/p44 mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) was measured 5–20 min after the start of GRO/CINC-1 exposure. Results: Cultures treated with GRO/CINC-1 showed a significant increase in cell number and BrdU incorporation in a concentration-dependent fashion. The MAPK activity increased within 5 min after GRO/CINC-1 application and returned to the control level at 20 min. Conclusion: The growth-stimulatory effect of GRO/CINC-1 on rat gastric epithelial cells suggests a dual function of this chemokine: proinflammatory action and induction of epithelial proliferation.

Notizen: We previously demonstrated that Helicobacter pylori colonization evokes gastric mucosal inflammation and an extensive increase in lipid peroxides and glutathione in Mongolian gerbils. Zinc and its derivative, polaprezinc, have been reported to be potent antioxidants in gastric mucosa.〈section xml:id="abs1-2"〉〈title type="main"〉Aim:To examine the effect of polaprezinc on gastric mucosal oxidative inflammation in H. pylori-colonized Mongolian gerbils.〈section xml:id="abs1-3"〉〈title type="main"〉Methods:Sixty-eight male Mongolian gerbils were orally inoculated with H. pylori (ATCC43504, 5 × 108 CFUs/gerbil; H. pylori group) and 35 gerbils were inoculated with the culture media (control group). Twenty-two gerbils in the H. pylori and 13 gerbils in the control group were fed with diets containing polaprezinc (0.06%, 100 mg/kg, 10 times the usual clinical dose) (H. pylori + polaprezinc group, polaprezinc group). The remaining gerbils were fed a standard laboratory chow diet. Neutrophil infiltration, assessed histologically and by the activity of myeloperoxidase, the contents of CXC-chemokine (GRO/CINC-1-like protein) and the contents of thiobarbituric acid-reactive substances, was evaluated in each group 12 weeks after the inoculation. Separately, gastric mucosal leucocyte activation and capillary perfusion were also assessed using intravital microscopy 2, 4, 8 and 12 weeks after the inoculation.〈section xml:id="abs1-4"〉〈title type="main"〉Results:In all H. pylori-inoculated animals, the bacterial infection persisted throughout the experimental period. Gastric mucosal lesion formation in the H. pylori group was significantly inhibited in the H. pylori + polaprezinc group. Elevated levels of myeloperoxidase activity, GRO/CINC-1 and thiobarbituric acid-reactive substances in the H. pylori group at 12 weeks were attenuated significantly by polaprezinc treatment. Enhanced levels of venular leucocyte activation observed in the H. pylori group were attenuated significantly in the H. pylori + polaprezinc group during both the early phase (2 weeks) and late phase (12 weeks).〈section xml:id="abs1-5"〉〈title type="main"〉Conclusion:Polaprezinc inhibited H. pylori-associated gastric mucosal oxidative inflammation, including initial micro-vascular leucocyte activation, in Mongolian gerbils.
