Notes: Small angle neutron scattering experiments were made on an ionomer synthesized from perdeuterostyrene and an ion pair comonomer. A Debye plot based on data from the sample with lower ion concentration gave a correlation length of 5.3A. Clustering is not significant in this sample. With a higher concentration of ionic groups a peak in the scattering curve is interpreted as due to clusters about 20A in diameter. These studies along with X-ray scattering and electron microscopy also indicate the presence of larger ion rich domains.

Notes: Poly(butyl acrylate) has been graft copolymerized onto casein using potassium peroxydisulfate-ascorbic acid as the initiating system. The proof of grafting has been obtained by ninhydrin test and IR studies. The effects of synthetic variables in the graft copolymerization have been discussed in the light of percent grafting, grafting efficiency, and the rates of polymerization.

Notes: Polymerisation of methyl acrylate (MA) initiated by O2-ascorbic acid (AA)-Cu2+ system was studied in aqueous medium at 40°C. The rate of polymerisation Rp, was found to increase, remain constant, and then decrease with increasing [Cu2+]. Rp was found to depend on [Cu2+]0,6, [AA]0, [O2]0,6, and [MA]1,3 in the increasing region, on [Cu2+]0, [AA]0, [O2]0,6, and [MA]1,6 in the constant region and on [Cu2+]-0,9, [AA]0, [O2]0,7, and [MA]2,0 in the decreasing region. Rate laws were derived assuming a plausible reaction mechanism for the different regions. Rp increased with ionic strength and decreased with [H2SO4,]. An initial increase, then steady state followed by a decrease in rate with temperature was noticed in the range 25 - 55°C. kp/kt1/2 values were calculated and compared with literature values. Chain lengths were determined viscometrically.

Notes: Poly(acrylonitrile-co-methyl methacrylate) films were oxidized in an air oven and in an oxidation chamber at temperatures of 80 to 200°C. Differential thermal analysis of these oxidized films showed that the exothermic peaks increased with increasing oxidation temperature. The change of viscosity, the insolubility in dimethylformamide and IR analyses indicate both intramolecular and intermolecular reactions.

Notes: The kinetics of polymerization of methyl methacrylate (MMA) in dilute nitric acid medium at 40°C initiated by the three component initiating system, oxygen-ascorbic acid (AA)-ferric ions was investigated. The rate of polymerization, Rp, was found to be proportional to [MMA]1.5 under different experimental conditions. Rp, was independent of [Fe3+] in the concentration range 2 to 5 - 10-5 M, but decreased slightly at higher values. Rp was also independent of [AA] and a dependence on [O2]0.6 was noticed with [O2] 〈 6.5 × 10-4M. After an initial increase, Rp became independent above [HNO3] ≈ 0.3M. Ionic strength, μ, of the medium had no effect on Rp. A rate increase up to 42°C followed by constancy and decrease with further increase in temperature (〉46°C) was noticed. The chain lengths of the polymers were determined to be in the range 102  -  103 by viscometry. A plausible reaction mechanism with initiation by the primary radical and termination by mutual interaction was proposed.

Notes: The kinetics of photopolymerization of vinyl monomers (methyl methacrylate, methylacrylate, and acrylonitrile) sensitized by the dyes acridine orange, dahlia violet, rose bengal and Pyronine G have been studied systematically. Systems containing dye, reducing agent, and monomer were irradiated with light of wavelengths 365 mμ, 546 mμ, and 405 mμ. The induction period was kept to a minimum by suitable experimental conditions. All experiments were conducted under deaerated conditions. The complex, AA-B, formed between ascorbic acid and sodium hydrogen orthophosphate (of the buffer) and reported earlier from our laboratory, played an important role in the production of the free radicals. The course of the polymerization reaction was followed by the measurements of rate of monomer disappearance -d[M]/dt (gravimetrically), rate of dye disappearance -d[D]/dt (spectrophotometrically), and the chainlengths n, of the polymer formed (viscometrically); light intensity, light wavelength, and concentrations of the dye, reducing agent, and monomer were the various variables for these measurements. A tentative scheme based on the excitation of the dye in the primary photochemical act and the interaction of the excited dye with the complex AA-B in the dark resulting in radicals (from ascorbic acid) which initiate vinyl polymerization is proposed, and the experimental results are found to conform to such a scheme. The values of various ratios of rate constants such as kp/kt½, kr/k7, ki/k6 were calculated and are discussed.
