    Notizen: Summary Spontaneous otoacoustic emissions (SOAEs) are amplitude-modulated pure sinus tones. The character of the sinus tone, which is a rare phenomenon in nature, can be proven by resolving the shifts and drifts that more or less always occur. In this report amplitude modulation was studied by digital filtering. The SOAEs were composed of bursts which, in small emissions, appeared only a part of the time. This procedure is not only suited for studying SOAEs but also for demonstrating evoked emissions, even without averaging.

    Notizen: Microbial-derived phospholipid fatty acids (PLFAs) can be used to characterize the microbial communities in soil without the need to isolate individual fungi and bacteria. They have been used to assess microbial communities of humus layers under coniferous forest, but nothing is known of their distribution in the deeper soil. To investigate the vertical distribution we sampled nine Podzol profiles on a 100-m-long transect in a coniferous forest and analysed for their microbial biomass and PLFA pattern to a depth of 0.4 m. The transect covered a fertility gradient from Vaccinium vitis-idaea forest site type to Vaccinium myrtillus forest site type. The cores were divided into humus (O) and eluvial (E) layers and below that into 10-cm sections and designated as either illuvial (B) or parent material (C), or as a combination (BC). Two measures of microbial biomass analyses were applied: substrate-induced respiration (SIR) to determine microbial biomass C (Cmic), and the sum of the extracted microbial-derived phospholipid fatty acids (totPLFA). The soil fertility had no effect on the results. The Cmic correlated well with totPLFA (r= 0.86). The microbial biomass decreased with increasing depth. In addition the PLFA pattern changed with increased depth as assessed with principal component analysis, indicating a change in the microbial community structure. The composition of the PLFAs in the O layer differed from that in the E layer and both differed from the upper part of the B layer and from the rest of the BC layers. The deeper parts of the B layer (BC1, BC2 and BC3) were similar to one other. The O layer had more 18:2ω6, a PLFA indicator of fungi, whereas the E layer contained relatively more of the PLFAs 16:1ω9, 18:1ω7 and cy19:0 common in gram-negative bacteria. With increased depth the relative amount of 10Me18:0, the PLFA indicator for actinomycetes, increased. We conclude that the PLFA method is a promising discriminator between the microbial community structures of the horizons in Podzols.

    Notizen: Abstract— Neutron activation analysis was used for the simultaneous determination of copper, manganese and zinc in the brains of calves, cows and pigs. Measurements of these three elements in as many as 11 different regions of the brain showed that the highest content is always found in the pineal body. Typical values for calf brains are: Cu, ∼20 μg/g; Mn, ∼3 μg/g; and Zn, ∼90 μg/g dry pineal tissue. As a first approximation, the ratio of Cu:Mn:Zn is roughly constant for all regions.

    Notizen: The first measurements of subpicosecond dynamics of carrier capture and decay in Be δ-doped GaAs structures with p-doping density ranging from 6×1012 to 2×1014 cm−2 and spatial distribution on monolayer scale show that photoexcited carriers are captured in the δ-doped layer in 〈1 ps. Luminescence decay rates show a strong dependence on energy of the hole in the two-dimensional Fermi gas. We attribute this to a change in the spatial electron-hole overlap resulting from band-mixing effects. We show that Be density fluctuations lead to strong carrier localization. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

    Notizen: Langasite (La3Ga5SiO14) and related compounds are promising candidates for high-temperature piezoelectric applications. To determine the stable operation of langasite as a high-temperature bulk acoustic wave (BAW) resonator, we characterized electrical conductivity [σel=1.56×exp(−1.07 eV/kT)S/cm] and oxygen diffusivity [DoxT=5×10−5 exp(−1.45 eV/kT)cm2/s] up to elevated temperatures. Langasite was successfully operated up to 900 °C as a BAW resonator with an average mass sensitivity of about 0.17 μg Hz−1 cm−2. This enables, in principle, high-temperature monitoring of deposition rates and thermogravimetry with high sensitivity. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

    Notizen: While most ecologists agree that the effects of fragmentation on diversity of organisms are predominantly negative and that the scale of fragmentation defines their severity, the role of habitat corridors in mitigating those effects still remains controversial. This ambiguousness rests largely on various difficulties in experimentation, a problem partially solved in the present paper by the use of easily manipulated soil communities. In this 2.5-year-long field experiment, we investigated the responses of soil decomposer organisms (from microbes to mesofaunal predators) to habitat fragment size, in the presence or absence of habitat corridors connecting the fragments. The habitat fragments and corridors, composed of forest humus soil, were embedded in mineral soil representing an uninhabitable (or nonpreferred) matrix for the decomposer organisms. The results demonstrate that soil decomposer organisms do respond to changes in their habitat size: the species richness of microarthropods (mites and collembolans) increased as the size of the fragments increased. Especially collembolan species and predatory mites proved to be sensitive to the restricted habitat size, which is suggested to be a consequence of the large proportion of rare species and small and fluctuating population sizes in these groups. Contrary to our expectations, the presence of corridors had no positive effects on species richness or abundance of any of the studied faunas, possibly because of the low quality of the corridors. On the other hand, the biomass of soil fungi increased in the presence of corridors, which apparently provided a preferred pathway for vegetative dispersal of the fungi. Our results indicate that despite their characteristic underground environment, the response of soil decomposer organisms – in particular that of microarthropods – to habitat size is not unlike to that of the larger organisms in aboveground habitats.
