    Notes: Scaled particle theory is applied to the prediction of the thermodynamic properties of a system of identical hard spheres adsorbed onto another sphere of different diameter. The finite nature of the system requires modification of the usual boundary conditions on the contact correlation function. The calculated activities of the adsorbate are in good agreement with Monte Carlo simulation results and with exact values for systems of few particles.

    Notes: This study investigated the main factors contributing to boron toxicity in plants. Growth was rapidly inhibited by internal B concentrations in the range 1–5 m m across a range of plant types that included monocot, dicot and algal species. In contrast, mature cells were able to withstand up to 60 m m B for several days. In wheat, rapid inhibition of root growth occurred if high B was applied to the root tip, but not if high B was applied to mature sections of the root. In leaves, there were gradations in B concentrations that correlated with visible symptoms of toxicity. However, there was no evidence to support the hypothesis that toxicity in leaves is due to osmotic stress induced by the accumulation of B. Analysis of the sensitivity to B of a range of metabolic processes including photosynthesis, respiration and protein synthesis leads to the conclusion that growth is not restricted by effects of B on energy supply and not directly by inhibition of protein synthesis. At higher B concentrations, many cellular activities were found to be partially inhibited and the toxicity to mature tissues was therefore considered not to arise from the disruption of a single process, but from the accumulated retardation of many cellular processes, exacerbated in light by photo-oxidative stress.

    Notes: GTP-binding rab proteins, present in synaptic vesicles and endocrine secretory granules, have been shown to be involved in the control of regulated exocytosis. We found rab3 proteins in immunoblots of diverse areas of the mouse central nervous system (spinal cord, olfactory bulb, hippocampus, cerebellum and neocortex). Immunohistochemical observations at light- and electron-microscopical levels in the hippocampus and other areas revealed rab3 proteins in virtually all synaptic fields and terminals of the areas investigated. In the retina, rab3A immunoreactivity was confined to the inner and outer plexiform layers. Ultrastructural examination revealed that rab3A was present in conventional terminals in the inner plexiform layer and in horizontal cell processes of the outer plexiform layer. In contrast ribbon synapses, which play a key role in transferring information from the photoreceptor cells to the central nervous system, were immunonegative. We also tested whether other proteins of the rab3 family are present in ribbon synapses. However, using an antibody recognizing rab3B and rab3C in addition to rab3A, we found no immunoreactivity in these synapses. Interestingly, we observed also no immunoreactivity for synaptosomal-associated protein 25 (SNAP-25) in ribbon synapses, but conventional synapses and horizontal cell processes were heavily stained. Our data show that the known rab3 and SNAP-25 isoforms, which are components of the secretory apparatus of conventional synapses, are absent from ribbon synapses of the retina. Our observations suggest different mechanisms of transmitter exocytosis in conventional and ribbon terminals.

    Notes: Peanut hull flour (PHF) at 0, 4, and 8% was added to wheat bread (WB) to increase the dietary fiber content. The bread was tested for textural properties, proximate composition, dietary fiber content, specific volume, color, and some sensory attributes. While addition of PHF caused some changes in the bread, all samples were evaluated by a panel as being acceptable. From the standpoint of bread quality, PHF is an acceptable material which can be added to WB to increase the level of dietary fiber.

    Notes: Peanut hull flour (PHF) was prepared from two types of peanuts and subsequently analyzed and evaluated as a dietary fiber source. The yield of PHF from the sheller-run hulls ranged from 15–33%. The PHF averaged 47.3% crude fiber. The neutral detergent fiber content was 78.1% and consisted of 25.5% lignin, 18.0% hemicellulose, and 34.6% cellulose. Fourteen elements were determined in the ash: P, Ca, Mg, and K were present in the highest concentrations. Holding capacities were 3.1g water/g flour and 1.7g oil/g flour. Cation exchange capacity was 1.0 meq/g flour; emulsifying capacity, 26.6 ml oil/g flour. Gross energy content was 4.57 Kcal/g, but about 0.52 Kcal/g would be available in the monogastric digestive system. Toasting caused a slight darkening of the flour and the flours had a slight peanut flavor. Thus, PHF seems to have potential for use as dietary fiber.

    Notes: Abstract The marine planktonic diatom Thalassiosira weisflogii was grown in turbidostat culture under both continuous and 12 hL: 12 hD illumination regimes in order to study the kinetics of adaptation to growth-irradiance levels. In both illumination regimes adaptation to a higher growth-irradiance level was accompanied by an increase in cell division rates and a decrease in chlorophyll a cell-1. The rates of adaptation for both processes, derived from first order kinetic analysis, equaled each other in each experiment. The results suggest that during the transition from low-to-high growth-irradiance levels chlorophyll a is diluted by cell division and is not actively degraded. Introduction of a light/dark cycle lowered the rate of adaptation. In transitions from high-to-low growth-irradiance levels there was a sharp drop in growth rates and a slow increase in chlorophyll a cell-1 under both continuous and intermittent illumination. In the 12 hL:12hD cycle there was a circadian rhythm in chlorophyll a cell-1, where cellular chlorophyll contents increased during the light cycle and decreased during the dark cycle. This circadian rhythm was distinctly different from light intensity adaptation. For kinetic analysis of light intensity adaptation in a 12 hL: 12 hD cycle, the circadian periodicity was separated from the light intensity response by subjecting the data to a Kaiser window optimization digital filter. Kinetic parameters for light-intensity adaptation were resolved from the filtered data. The kinetics of lightintensity adaptation of marine phytoplankton are discussed in relation to their spatial variations and time scales of mixing.
