    Notes: The influence of base pressure, Pb, on physical properties of FeMn exchange biased spin-valve films was studied by varying Pb over two decades from 3×10−8 to 7×10−6 Torr. Giant magnetoresistive value shows a slight increase with increasing Pb until a large decrease occurs at Pb〉3.3×10−6 Torr. Exchange bias field and blocking temperature remain constant in the base pressure range between 3×10−8 and 5×10−7 Torr before a large reduction appears. Our results indicate an upper limit for base pressure, uPb(approximate)5×10−7 Torr, above which significant spin-valve performance modification and deterioration in the crystallographic texture begin as a result of the contamination both at the ferromagnetic/antiferromagnetic interface and in the bulk of FeMn layer. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Improved efficiency of liposome encapsulation of a cheese-ripening enzyme and increased retention of encapsulated enzyme by cheese curd are reported. The economy of enzyme usage for accelerating the rate of ripening of Cheddar cheese has been improved about 100-fold over previously reported methods. This has made feasible the use of microencapsulated enzymes for large-scale cheese production. Objective measurement of cheese ripening by proteolytic indices, and subjective evaluation of flavour quality and intensity by trained taste panels, indicate that cheeses are ripened by the microencapsulated enzyme in half the normal time. Investigations aimed at further improving the efficiency and commercial feasibility of the process are reported, and the possibility of using this technology for other aspects of food processing are discussed.

    Notes: Ascorbic acid was encapsulated with high efficiency inside liposomes. In this form, its stability was enhanced compared to that in free aqueous solution, and particularly in the presence of a number of factors widespread in foods, which normally lead to its rapid degradation. Possible mechanisms for these stabilizing effects are discussed. Amongst other potential applications, these findings are relevant to the preservation of nutritional supplements of vitamin C in solution and to the development of naturally derived antioxidant systems for food protection.

    Notes: For a critical binary liquid mixture where the surface tension difference between the two components is very large, the component with the lowest surface tension completely saturates the liquid-vapor surface. The variation in the local volume fraction v(z), with depth z into the liquid mixture, is described by a universal surface scaling function P±≡P±(z/ξ±), which takes differing forms in the one- (+) and two-phase (−) regions, where ξ represents the bulk correlation length. Carpenter et al. [Phys. Rev. E 59, 5655 (1999); 61, 532 (2000)] determined P± using the ellipsometric critical adsorption data of four different critical binary liquid mixtures. A deficiency of this prior study was that each of the liquid mixtures possessed at least one polar component, which could have generated distortions in the function P±(z/ξ±). In this publication, we demonstrate that P±, determined in the previous study, provides an excellent description of the nonpolar critical binary liquid mixture 1,1,2,2-tetrabromoethane+n-dodecane. © 2002 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Five proteinases were purified from culture filtrate of Brevibacterium linens by a series of column chromatography and found to be homogeneous by polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis. All appear to be serine proteinases, being inactivated by phenyl-methylsulphonyl fluoride and not by EDTA or p-chloromercuribenzoic acid. They were all active against casein in alkaline pH (pH optimum of 11.0) and specific activity was within the range 2.66–3.23 units mg−1 protein. Proteinases C, D and E were more stable in higher temperature and acidic pH than proteinases A and B. Molecular weights estimated by gel filtration were 37000, 37000, 44000, 127000 and 325000 for proteinases, A, B, C, D and E, respectively.

    Notes: We tested the hypothesis that the stable carbon isotope signature of ecosystem respiration (δ13CR) was regulated by canopy conductance (Gc) using weekly Keeling plots (n=51) from a semiarid old-growth ponderosa pine (Pinus ponderosa) forest in Oregon, USA. For a comparison of forests in two contrasting climates we also evaluated trends in δ13CR from a wet 20-year-old Douglas-fir (Pseudotsuga menziesii) plantation located near the Pacific Ocean. Intraannual variability in δ13CR was greater than 8.0‰ at both sites, was highest during autumn, winter, and spring when rainfall was abundant, and lowest during summer drought. The δ13CR of the dry pine forest was consistently more positive than the wetter Douglas-fir forest (mean annual δ13CR: −25.41‰ vs. −26.23‰, respectively, P=0.07). At the Douglas-fir forest, δ13CR–climate relationships were consistent with predictions based on stomatal regulation of carbon isotope discrimination (Δ). Soil water content (SWC) and vapor pressure deficit (vpd) were the most important factors governing δ13CR in this forest throughout the year. In contrast, δ13CR at the pine forest was relatively insensitive to SWC or vpd, and exhibited a smaller drought-related enrichment (∼2‰) than the enrichment observed during drought at the Douglas-fir forest (∼5‰). Groundwater access at the pine forest may buffer canopy–gas exchange from drought. Despite this potential buffering, δ13CR at the pine forest was significantly but weakly related to canopy conductance (Gc), suggesting that δ13CR remains coupled to canopy–gas exchange despite groundwater access. During drought, δ13CR was strongly correlated with soil temperature at both forests. The hypothesis that canopy-level physiology is a critical regulator of δ13CR was supported; however, belowground respiration may become more important during rain-free periods.

    Notes: Forest development following stand-replacing disturbance influences a variety of ecosystem processes including carbon exchange with the atmosphere. On a series of ponderosa pine (Pinius ponderosa var. Laws.) stands ranging from 9 to〉 300 years in central Oregon, USA, we used biological measurements to estimate carbon storage in vegetation and soil pools, net primary productivity (NPP) and net ecosystem productivity (NEP) to examine variation with stand age. Measurements were made on plots representing four age classes with three replications: initiation (I, 9–23 years), young (Y, 56–89 years), mature (M, 95–106 years), and old (O, 190–316 years) stands typical of the forest type in the region. Net ecosystem productivity was lowest in the I stands (−124 g C m−2 yr−1), moderate in Y stands (118 g C m−2 yr−1), highest in M stands (170 g C m−2 yr−1), and low in the O stands (35 g C m−2 yr−1). Net primary productivity followed similar trends, but did not decline as much in the O stands. The ratio of fine root to foliage carbon was highest in the I stands, which is likely necessary for establishment in the semiarid environment, where forests are subject to drought during the growing season (300–800 mm precipitation per year). Carbon storage in live mass was the highest in the O stands (mean 17.6 kg C m−2). Total ecosystem carbon storage and the fraction of ecosystem carbon in aboveground wood mass increased rapidly until 150–200 years, and did not decline in older stands. Forest inventory data on 950 ponderosa pine plots in Oregon show that the greatest proportion of plots exist in stands ∼ 100 years old, indicating that a majority of stands are approaching maximum carbon storage and net carbon uptake. Our data suggests that NEP averages ∼ 70 g C m−2 year−1 for ponderosa pine forests in Oregon. About 85% of the total carbon storage in biomass on the survey plots exists in stands greater than 100 years, which has implications for managing forests for carbon sequestration. To investigate variation in carbon storage and fluxes with disturbance, simulation with process models requires a dynamic parameterization for biomass allocation that depends on stand age, and should include a representation of competition between multiple plant functional types for space, water, and nutrients.

    Notes: We conducted ecosystem carbon and water vapour exchange studies in an old-growth Pinus ponderosa forest in the Pacific North-west region of the United States. The canopy is heterogeneous, with tall multiaged trees and an open, clumped canopy with low leaf area. Carbon assimilation can occur throughout relatively mild winters, although night frosts can temporarily halt the process and physiological factors limit its efficiency. In contrast, carbon assimilation is often limited in the ‘growing season’ by stomatal closure associated with high evaporative demand (D) and soil water deficits. All of these factors present a challenge to effectively modelling ecosystem processes. Our objective was to generate an understanding of the controls on ecosystem processes across seasonal and annual cycles from a combination of fine-scale process modelling, ecophysiological measurements, and carbon and water vapour fluxes measured by the eddy covariance method. Flux measurements showed that 50% and 70% of the annual carbon uptake occurred outside the ‘growing season’ (defined as bud break to senescence, ∼ days 125–275) in 1996 and 1997. On a daily basis in summer, net ecosystem productivity (NEP) was low when D and soil water deficits were large. Whole ecosystem water vapour fluxes (LE) increased from spring to summer (1.0–1.9 mm d−1) as conducting leaf area increased by 30% and as evaporative demand increased, while evaporation from the soil surface became a smaller portion of total LE as soil water deficits increased. The models underestimated soil evaporation, particularly following rain. In the SPA model, varying the temperature optimum for photosynthesis seasonally resulted in overestimation of carbon uptake in winter and spring, showing that in coniferous forests, assumptions about temperature optima are clearly important. Daily estimates of soil surface CO2 flux from measurements and site meteorological data demonstrated that modelling of soil CO2 flux based on an Arrhenius-type equation in CANPOND overestimated CO2 respired from the soil during drought and when temperatures were low.

    Notes: Net ecosystem productivity (NEP), net primary productivity (NPP), and water vapour exchange of a mature Pinus ponderosa forest (44°30′ N, 121°37′ W) growing in a region subject to summer drought were investigated along with canopy assimilation and respiratory fluxes. This paper describes seasonal and annual variation in these factors, and the evaluation of two generalized models of carbon and water balance (PnET-II and 3-PG) with a combination of traditional measurements of NPP, respiration and water stress, and eddy covariance measurements of above-and below-canopy CO2 and water vapour exchange. The objective was to evaluate the models using two years of traditional and eddy covariance measurements, and to use the models to help interpret the relative importance of processes controlling carbon and water vapour exchange in a water-limited pine ecosystem throughout the year. PnET-II is a monthly time-step model that is driven by nitrogen availability through foliar N concentration, and 3-PG is a monthly time-step quantum-efficiency model constrained by extreme temperatures, drought, and vapour pressure deficits. Both models require few parameters and have the potential to be applied at the watershed to regional scale. There was 2/3 less rainfall in 1997 than in 1996, providing a challenge to modelling the water balance, and consequently the carbon balance, when driving the models with the two years of climate data, sequentially. Soil fertility was not a key factor in modelling processes at this site because other environmental factors limited photosynthesis and restricted projected leaf area index to ∼1.6. Seasonally, GEP and LE were overestimated in early summer and underestimated through the rest of the year. The model predictions of annual GEP, NEP and water vapour exchange were within 1–39% of flux measurements, with greater disparity in 1997 because soil water never fully recharged. The results suggest that generalized models can provide insights to constraints on productivity on an annual basis, using a minimum of site data.
