    Notes: Measurement of magnetic particle flow orientation properties is of considerable practical and fundamental interest as it relates to the particulate recording tape and disk manufacturing industry. For production of high-quality magnetic tapes and disks, the suspension must be well dispersed. Previous study focused on rodlike single-domain magnetic particles for longitudinal magnetic recording. In contrast, platelike particles are considered here for use in perpendicular recording. Both theory and experiment have demonstrated that a magnetic sensing technique employed to measure the hydrodynamic orientation provides a measure of the flocculation state for rodlike magnetic particle suspensions. Here the previous theory is extended and new experimental results are shown to demonstrate that the hydrodynamic orientation measurement apparatus can also be used to measure the flocculation state of platelike particles. The key new experimental result is the contrast between the flow orientation properties of the rod versus the platelike particles. Rodlike single-domain particles orient parallel to the flow direction causing the suspension magnetic permeability parallel to the flow direction to decrease with increasing flow rate. In the case of the platelike Ba-ferrite particles, the opposite behavior is observed. As the flow rate is increased, the particles orient with their flat side parallel to the flow direction causing the suspension magnetic permeability parallel to the flow direction to increase.

    Notes: A methylene dihydropyridine with a high ground-state dipole moment was investigated to explore the possibility of using it to form an organic monomeric glass "electret" film. Measurements were done in a specially designed test cell. An electric field was applied to a 100-μm-thick film of dihydropyridine while cooling from a melt. The cell potential was recorded as a function of time to study the homocharge and polarization relaxations. The homocharge relaxation time was (approximate)900 s. The polarization relaxation time was (approximate)2×105 s in the vicinity of the glass transition temperature. The polarization is linear over a wide range of electric field strength. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Perfluoropolyether (PFPE) films for lubrication of thin film magnetic recording media are made progressively thinner and their physical properties are increasingly dominated by molecular interactions with the carbon overcoat. Surface potential measurement is one of a few techniques to study the interaction of ultrathin films with surfaces. A scanning Kelvin probe apparatus with spatial resolution of 100 microns and potential sensitivity of 0.5 mV was employed to study the surface potentials of linear and branched PFPE films with methyl, hydroxyl, phenyl ester, and carboxylic acid end groups on amorphous hydrogenated carbon surfaces. The surface potential is dominated by polar groups rather than the PFPE monomers. Application of the scanning surface potential technique to measure the migration of PFPE films is also shown. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) was employed to measure the three-dimensional surface topography of radial servo grooves etched in a glass substrate. The effect of groove depth (nominal values of 20, 40, and 70 nm) on tracking servo signals at a track pitch of 1.6 μm is examined. Using an optical disk tester, three groove related signals were measured for each groove depth: the on-track signal ratio, cross-track ratio, and the push-pull ratio. In a key feature of this study, scalar diffraction theory was used to calculate the groove related signals from the STM profiles and the beam profile of the optical disk tester. The calculated groove related signals were found to be in nearly quantitative agreement with those measured with the disk tester.

    Notes: Solid fluorocarbon films were deposited on carbon overcoated magnetic recording media. The films were made by direct ion beam deposition of fluorocarbon monomers. This paper presents ellipsometric measurements on films over a range of thickness from 0.5 to 12.5 nm. Film thickness was measured using ellipsometry, and the chemical composition was studied using x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). A high-speed ellipsometer was set up to map thickness over the whole media surface. The ellipsometric angle Δ was found to be linearly related with the film thickness. Since the escape depth of the XPS is comparable to the film thickness, the XPS senses the underlying carbon as well as the carbon in the film. As a result, the apparent ratio of fluorine to carbon depends on the film thickness. The ion beam deposition technique can be used to produce films with controlled thickness and uniform composition. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Tribological studies of friction and wear were performed on carbon overcoated thin-film magnetic recording media with pin-on-disk tests. Scanning microellipsometry was employed to measure the wear of carbon overcoats on rigid magnetic media. Severe wear produced after the carbon film wore through was measured by mechanical profilometry. The wear rate of the carbon is three orders of magnitude lower than that of the underlying metallic layers and is nearly proportional to slider load. Micrographs of the wear tracks and the magnitude of the wear coefficient from the Archard wear equation indicate three-body abrasive wear.

    Notes: Process changes aimed at improving printer engine performance must take into consideration not only the process variables (such as nip temperature and pressure and process time to), but also the melt rheological variables (such as the characteristic time scale of the toner Tc). The melt rheology relevant to the electrophotographic toner fusing process is discussed. One criterion for toner quality can be conveniently measured through the Deborah number De, which is the ratio of Tc to to. Modification of the melt rheology by matrix polymer composition and carbon black size and concentration has previously been explored. Here, the melt rheology of toners with a range of gel content was studied using a step shear test. The coupled relaxation model was employed to fit the stress relaxation data. The viscoelastic properties were calculated from the melt data with this model. These properties were then used to estimate the strain deformation of the toner as it passes through the nip with arbitrary residence time and nip pressure as a function of gel content. This method can be used to match the toner melt properties with the processing conditions.
