Notes: Nitrogen has been introduced in the preparation of hydrogenated amorphous silicon carbon alloy films by magnetron sputtering of silicon in a methane-argon gas mixture. The partial pressure of nitrogen was changed, and its effects on the structural, optical, electrical, and optoelectronic properties of the deposited films were investigated. The SiN bond becomes predominant with increasing partial pressure of nitrogen pN above 10%, at which the optical band gap is rapidly increased. The concentration of silicon and carbon in the films remained almost unchanged by changing pN up to 20%. It was found that the photoconductivity is also almost unchanged up to 20%, while the optical band gap is increased. This indicates that the photoconductivity is improved over a wider optical band gap, as compared with previous studies when the optical band gap was changed by changing deposition conditions but without introducing nitrogen.

Notes: Magnetization, magnetic susceptibility, and crystal structure are investigated on the ternary chromium arsenides CrM'As (M'=Ru,Rh,Pd) and ternary manganese phosphides and arsenides MnM'P(M'=Rh,Pd) and MnM'As(M'=Ru,Pd). MnRhP, MnRuAs, and MnPdAs are ferromagnets with a Curie temperature of Tc=401, 496, and 210 K, respectively. CrRhAs is an antiferromagnet with a Néel temperature of TN=165 K. MnPdP and CrPdAs show spin-glass-like freezing. A magnetic order-order transition is observed for CrRuAs. Susceptibility χ versus temperature curves are well expressed by a formula χ =C'/(T − θ'P)γ for all present compounds. The values of γ are about 3/2 for manganese compounds and CrPdAs, and about 1/2 for CrRuAs and CrRhAs.

Notes: Fe2MnSi forms the Heusler-type L21 structure with some degree of preferential DO3 disorder, in which about 10% of the Mn sites (c sites) are occupied by iron atoms. The observed Mössbauer spectrum of Fe2MnSi at 5.5 K is considered to be composed of four kinds of sextets. This spectrum can be well explained by a model based on the effect of atomic environment. The hyperfine field of 57Fe atoms on the Fe sites (b, and d sites) is considered to vary with the number of neighboring iron atoms n. They are 64, 116, and 158 kOe for n=0, 1, and 2, respectively. The field of the 57Fe on the c-sites with about eight neighboring iron atoms is 287 kOe. It may be concluded that the iron atoms without their neighboring iron atoms have a very small, or nearly zero, magnetic moment, from the empirical relation between magnetic moment and magnetic hyperfine field.

Notes: The proton spin-lattice relaxation rate 1/T1 has been measured in the two compounds Ni(C2H8N2)2NO2 (ClO4) (NENP) and [Ni(NO2)3N(CH3)4] (TMNIN), which provide good examples of S=1 antiferromagnetic chains. Both the field H and the temperature dependencies are well analyzed in the framework of the Haldane conjecture. The prediction of a mode whose energy decreases with H is confirmed. The energy damping of this mode is observed to be also reduced by H. For both compounds, a possible energy renormalization is suggested as H approaches the critical field, where the spin system is expected to recover a magnetic behavior.

Notes: An XeCl excimer laser was operated at the high repetition rate of 2.5 kHz, which can circulate the laser gas uniformly and efficiently. The characteristics of the gas flow rate and the average laser power versus the repetition rate were investigated in both He and Ne buffer gas mixtures. In He buffer gas, the average laser power saturates at 1.3 kHz and, thereafter, drops abruptly. On the other hand, stable operation at the highest repetition rate, 2.5 kHz, has been attained in Ne buffer at a gas flow rate of 54 m/s with an average laser power of 87 W.

Notes: Ion distributions in a loss cone are measured in the GAMMA 10 tandem mirror [Phys. Rev. Lett. 55, 939 (1985)]. When Alfvén ion cyclotron (AIC) modes are excited in the central cell, enhanced end-loss of ions is observed for a characteristic energy region which agrees well with the resonant ion cyclotron condition with the AIC wave. From measurements of pitch angle distributions of end-loss ions, it is found that the loss cone is filled for this characteristic energy region, indicating an ion diffusion in a velocity space induced by the AIC wave. Magnitude of the observed additional end-loss increases with increase in the amplitude of the AIC modes. In the present experimental parameters in GAMMA 10, the AIC wave effect on the axial ion confinement is not serious. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Photothermal technique for sensing pressure in a cell is reported. The pressure is monitored from the frequency change of the vibration of the cell itself. The vibration is generated by the photothermal bending effect caused by the chopped laser irradiation, and it is sensed by the deflection of the probe laser beam. The proposed technique is noncontact, and thus it will be useful for remote pressure measurements in hostile environments.

Notes: Barium-filled skutterudites BayCo4Sb12 with an anomalously large filling fraction of up to y=0.44 have been synthesized. The lattice parameters increase linearly with Ba content. Magnetic susceptibility data show that Ba0.44Co4Sb12 is paramagnetic, which implies that some of the Co atoms in BayCo4Sb12 have acquired a magnetic moment. The presence of the two different valence states of Co (Co3+ and Co2+) leads to the anomalously large barium filling fraction even without extra charge compensation. All samples show n-type conduction. The electrical conductivity increases with increasing the Ba filling fraction. The lattice thermal conductivity of BayCo4Sb12 is significantly depressed as compared to unfilled Co4Sb12. The dimensionless thermoelectric figure of merit, ZT, increases with increasing temperature reaching a maximum value of 1.1 for Ba0.24Co4Sb12 at 850 K. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: A gold neutral beam probe system which uses a microchannel plate (MCP) as a beam detector is being constructed in order to measure the electrostatic potential at the inner mirror throat (IMT) of the plug/barrier cell in the tandem mirror. The MCP detector was newly designed so as to be able to be used in the IMT strong magnetic field. The characteristics of the MCP gain were measured on a test stand with the strong magnetic field. The characteristic curves of the relative MCP gain were described as functions of the magnetic field strength, the MCP bias voltage, and the angle between the magnetic field and the capillary axis of the MCP. It was found that the newly designed MCP detector was useful for the potential measurement at the IMT region. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: A gold neutral beam probe system was improved by adopting a multichannel ion detector and adding sweeping functions of beam energy, deflector voltage, and electrode voltage of the analyzer to the system to measure the fluctuations and time evolution of the two-dimensional space potentials with fast resolving time during one shot. Positions of the beam spot on the multichannel detector corresponding to the ionizing points of the beam in the plasma were simulated precisely as a function of the beam energy and the injection angle. A potential derivation formula was determined taking into consideration both the numerical and experimental results, and the reproducibility of the potential profile was checked. Two-dimensional potential profiles were measured in the optimization experiment of the microwave injection angles for formation of the plug potential. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.
