    Notizen: Abstract: Inner retinal cells including dopamine (DA) cells were isolated and fractionated from the carp (Cyprinus carpio) retina by an enzyme cell dissociation and metrizamide gradient centrifugation method. When γ-aminobutyric acid (GABA) antagonists (bicuculline and picrotoxin) were added into the perfusate over such a cell fraction, they stimulated the release of [3H]DA which had been preloaded in the cell fraction. The action of GABA antagonists was dose and Ca2+ dependent. Their minimal effective concentration was very low (0.5 μM). A similar action was elicited by high K+. In the presence of excess GABA, this stimulatory action of GABA antagonists and high K+ on [3H]DA release was completely abolished. To interpret the action of GABA antagonists on DA cells, isolated cell fractions were preincubated with GABAse. After such a treatment, the stimulatory effects of GABA antagonists and high K+ on [3H]DA release were differentiated from each other; the former disappeared whereas the latter remained unchanged. The data strongly suggest that GABA inhibits the DA release from retinal DA cells and thus the GABA antagonists affect [3H]DA release from cell fractions not by a direct membrane action but by a disinhibition mechanism via GABA receptors on the DA cell bodies.

    Notizen: We have synthesized hcp-Co fine particles with the average diameter of less than 50 nm by sputtering Co in a somewhat high inert gas pressure. A nearly perfect hcp phase can be stabilized by increasing sputtering gas pressure and decreasing sputtering power in contrast to conventional preparation conditions. Magnetic measurements have revealed the clear relation of coercivity with the volume ratio of hcp phase. That is, the increase in the hcp phase considerably enhances the coercivity. Appearance of the hcp phase seems to be related to the promotion of allotropic phase transformation in Co initiated by lattice defects within each particle. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

    Notizen: Crystallographic texture of polycrystalline Co films prepared by sputtering on a variety of underlayers has been investigated. The texture of polycrystalline Co films greatly depends on underlayer material, and this dependence is well explained by taking into account the surface free energy difference between the underlayer material (γu) and Co (γCo). When γu is larger than γCo, Co films can be grown with a well-defined crystallographic texture of hcp-Co(001), which is the lowest surface energy crystal plane in order to minimize the total surface energy. In contrast, if γu is much smaller than γCo, no remarkable underlayer effects can be observed in the crystallographic structure of Co films. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

    Notizen: Fe (111) single crystal films have been grown on GaAs (111) by the sputter-beam method. Reflection high energy electron diffraction and x-ray diffraction measurements have revealed excellent aligned epitaxial growth of the Fe (111) film on GaAs. No evidence of preferential diffusion of As atoms into the deposited Fe layers has been found in the depth profile of Auger electron spectra. Magnetic measurements clearly show that the Fe (111) film has nearly ideal threefold symmetric anisotropy and exhibits isotropic initial permeability in the film plane, as predicted by theory.© 1997 American Institute of Physics.

    Notizen: We have developed a new and versatile method for observation of fine domain structures in ferromagnetic specimens. In this method, which we call here the high-resolution Bitter scanning electron microscope (HRBS) method, ferromagnetic fine particles as small as 20 nm are fabricated by sputtering, and are subsequently deposited on the surface of ferromagnetic samples to be investigated. The particles form very faithful domain patterns reflecting the leakage field distribution from the samples. We have applied this method to several magnetic and magneto-optic high density recording media, and have successfully observed the bit patterns at a recording density of 300 kFCI (bit length ∼80 nm). Moreover, we have confirmed that the HRBS method is also effective in investigating the magnetized states within each recording bit. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

    Notizen: By making use of the high permeability and the excellent high-frequency characteristics of Co-metal amorphous multilayered films, an inductor was fabricated. In order to improve the high-frequency characteristics, stripe patterned films were studied. The inductor consists of two of these films and a ferrite yoke. The value of inductance and quality factor were measured in the frequency range of 0.01–200 MHz. Although the value of the present inductance is small compared with other small size inductors developed so far, excellent high-frequency characteristics may be expected if an inductor is fabricated composed solely of these multilayered films.

    Notizen: We have investigated switching behaviors of a spin-vortex core in circular magnetic dots to evaluate them as a new candidate for magnetic memory elements. The spin-vortex core with the lateral dimension of exchange length can take two possible states with spins around the dot center directing either up- or downward. These two spin configurations are very stable and their polarities can be switched by a large vertical field. The mean switching field reaches about 2.5 kOe for Ni80Fe20 dots with 1 μm in diameter and 80 nm in height. This result could open the way for developing a new bistable magnetic memory element utilizing the spin vortex. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

    Notizen: Impulsive stimulated Brillouin scattering is applied to a new high-resolution phonon spectroscopy, where phonons created by two crossing pump pulses are observed using diffraction of a cw probe light in both time and frequency domains. In time domain, real-time behavior can be detected sensitively using a digital oscilloscope, while in frequency domain, measurements with high resolution are attainable by means of a spherical Fabry–Perot interferometer. Several examples of the measurements on liquid samples are demonstrated for clarifying various aspects of the phonon generation by the present method: the mechanism of the generation under pulsed light irradiation, the propagation of the generated phonon, the resonance excitation, and the interference with the other nonlinear optical processes. The relation with the ordinary light scattering is also discussed.

    Notizen: The interlayer magnetic coupling of a Fe/Si/Fe trilayer shows an analogous feature to that of Fe/Si superlattices. With an increase in Si layer thickness, it oscillates as ferromagnetic (first F), antiferromagnetic (AF), ferromagnetic (second F), and finally reaches a noncoupling (N) state. We have investigated interlayer coupling of Fe/Si/Fe trilayers inserting very thin (1 or 2 ML thick) boundary layers X (X=Ag, Ge, Fe–Si, Ta, etc.). They are expected to suppress interatomic diffusion between Fe and Si layers. Interlayer coupling of Fe/X/Si/X/Fe with negligible interdiffusion is simply F and changes to N as the Si layer thickness increases. Furthermore, Fe/Fe–Si/Fe trilayers which show coupling of first F, AF but not second F, reproduce second F when a Si layer is inserted in the Fe–Si spacer. These results imply that an amorphous Si spacer mediates ferromagnetic coupling between neighboring Fe layers while the first F and the strong AF coupling usually observed in Fe/Si superlattices are caused by diffused crystalline Fe–Si. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

    Notizen: We have investigated the uniaxial magnetic anisotropy of the high resistivity Fe–Al–O granular films prepared by sputtering. It is found that application of external dc field during film deposition and post-annealing treatments give rise to no serious effects on the magnetic anisotropy. In contrast, the incident angle of sputtered particles to the substrate greatly affects the strength and the direction of the anisotropy. These results suggest that the magnetic anisotropy is induced by a shape anisotropy due to anisotropic morphology in the films. The temperature dependence of the anisotropy constant, however, does not obey the usual shape anisotropy relationship Ku(T)∝Ms(T)2. In the present article, we propose an anisotropic coupling model in order to explain the uniaxial anisotropy found in these granular films, where the magnetic coupling between Fe grains is assumed to be anisotropic in the film plane due to the presence of low Tc intergranular phase which bridges the gap between Fe grains in one direction but not in the orthogonal direction. This model satisfactorily explains the temperature dependence of Ku(T)and Ms(T) for all Fe–Al–O granular films prepared in the present experiment. This agreement between the experiments and the theory implies that the magnetic anisotropy of the granular films is remarkably influenced by the magnetism and spatial distribution of the low Tc intergranular phase. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.
