Notizen: A formula for predicting the stress effect on the electromagnetic resonances of dielectric resonators is obtained by applying a perturbation method to the three-dimensional Maxwell's equations in which the dielectric permittivity tensor is perturbed by the applied stress (or strain) field through the piezo-optic effect. The dielectric resonator, which is surrounded by infinite free space, can be isotropic or anisotropic and of arbitrary shape. By using previously obtained two-dimensional closed-form solutions as the approximate unperturbed solutions, stress effect on the electromagnetic resonances in a dielectric circular disk is studied. Frequency changes of both the transverse electric and transverse magnetic modes are computed for disks of gallium arsenide and under three cases of loading: (1) a pair of diametral forces, (2) steady vertical acceleration, and (3) steady horizontal acceleration. In the latter two cases, the bottom face of the disk is supported by a rigid base. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

Notizen: Structural and electrical characteristics of chemical vapor deposited (CVD) diamond films have been studied as a function of film thickness. The samples comprise a set of codeposited, nominally undoped diamond films with average grain size on the growth surface increasing linearly with the film thickness. Raman scattering analysis reveals a decrease of nondiamond phase and intragrain defects with increasing film thickness. Temperature dependent dc conductivity results indicate that, as the film thickness increases, the Fermi level moves towards the valence band. There is a corresponding decrease in the density of states at the Fermi level, as deduced from the space-charge-limited current in the bulk of the samples. The spatial variation in the density of states through the material closely reflects the changes observed in the structural and electrical properties of the films. Such characteristic has the implication on the application of CVD diamond in the area of electronics. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

Notizen: The effect of lateral element size, shape, and ferromagnetic layer thickness on exchange biasing in polycrystalline IrMn/CoFe thin film elements has been studied. Magnetic hysteresis loop measurements and magnetic force microscopy imaging have been used to elucidate the basic micromagnetic behavior. Magnetic imaging of micron scale elements illustrates that the magnetization reversal modes change significantly from those of unbiased ferromagnetic elements. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

Notizen: In this article, the feasibility of atomic force microscope (AFM) scanning moiré on a cross-line diffraction grating has been studied. The AFM scanning moiré technique has been applied to measure the thermal deformation of electronic packages successfully. This technique is convenient to perform the mismatch method, also it could obtain a higher resolution than any other moiré method. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

Notizen: The magnetotransport and magnetic properties of chemically ordered (001) L10 FePt epitaxial thin films with small scale perpendicularly magnetized stripe domains have been investigated. Film growth conditions are used to systematically vary the degree of chemical order, the magnetic anisotropy, and magnetic domain sizes. The longitudinal and transverse (Hall) resistivities are correlated with both film chemical order and magnetic properties. The low-field magnetoresistance shows evidence of domain effects. In the highest anisotropy and most chemically ordered film studied, this low field magnetoresistance is consistent with an intrinsic domain wall scattering contribution to the resistivity. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

Notizen: The magnetization reversal and magnetic domain configurations of 0.5-μm-wide epitaxial (110) Fe particles with rectangular and needle-shaped ends and competing magnetic anisotropies have been investigated. Magnetic force microscopy imaging and longitudinal Kerr hysteresis loop measurements in conjunction with micromagnetic simulations have been used to elucidate the basic micromagnetic behavior. End shape is shown to be a determining factor for the nucleation of magnetization reversal and the resulting magnetic domain configurations. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

Notizen: Carbon nanoparticles were prepared from H2 and CH4 by microwave plasma chemical vapor deposition at various temperatures as low as 250 °C by using nickel and iron as catalysts. The carbon nanoparticles are well graphitized until a temperature as low as 400 °C, and the degree of graphitization increases with increasing growth temperature. Field emission measurements showed that the carbon nanoparticles are excellent electron field emitters, comparable to carbon nanotubes. Field emission properties became better with increasing growth temperature, and the threshold fields of the carbon nanoparticles deposited at 400, 500, 670 °C, were 3.2, 3, and 1 V/μm, respectively. No emission was observed for the carbon nanoparticles deposited below 400 °C. The low threshold field of the carbon nanoparticles is attributed to field enhancement effect and the higher degree of graphitization. © 2002 American Institute of Physics.

Notizen: The optical constants of highly (100)-oriented LaNiO3 thin films on Pt(111)-Ti–SiO2–Si substrate derived by metalorganic deposition have been obtained using spectroscopic ellipsometry techniques in the wide wavelength range from ultraviolet to far infrared. In fitting the dielectric functions of LaNiO3, two harmonic oscillators are observed, one is believed to come from the valence–conduction interband transition and the other is attributed to the transition from a donor band to the conduction. Simultaneously the frequency of plasmon is also obtained, which results from the strong electron–electron interaction. Based on these optical and electrical properties, a promising application of LaNiO3 thin films in infrared microsensors has been proposed. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

Notizen: Boron carbonitride (BCN) films with various compositions have been prepared by bias-assisted hot filament chemical vapor deposition. The three elements of B, C, and N are chemically bonded with each other and an atomic-level BCN hybrid has been formed in the films. The deposited films are composed of turbostratic structural regions ranging from a few to a few tens of nanometers. Besides, there exist some amorphous domains in the films. Boron atoms have been confirmed to be incorporated into the films with a concentration up to 70 at. %. The interplanar spacing of 3.49 Å is found to be independent of the film composition in this range. These films show a blueshift in photoluminescence peak with increasing B content. These findings show that the electronic structure of BCN compounds can be controlled by changing compositions and the BCN compounds are blue-light emitting materials. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.
