Notizen: The absorption coefficient of several diluted magnetic semiconductors was measured below the fundamental absorption edge of the pure host compound at room temperature using the photoacoustic technique. Several absorption bands have been detected and assigned to electronic transitions between the crystal field split 3d levels of the transition metal ion. In addition, weak absorption thresholds have been observed and assigned to the ionization of the transition metal d states. An energy level diagram of the d states has been discussed. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

Notizen: Summary The epidemiological, clinical and microbiological data, obtained during a spring-summer outbreak of epidemic diarrhea in Italy, are given with some details. The disease was generally mild in character. From samples of stool and gargling, taken from both patients and healthy contacts, several strains of Coxsackie B 3 virus were isolated. The possible etiological role of this enterovirus as the cause of the outbreak is discussed.

Notizen: Summary We have measured at room temperature the photoacoustic spectra of Cd1−x Fe x Te(0〈x〈0.055) around the CdTe fundamental absorption threshold. We identified an absorption band at (1.38±0.01) eV, increasing with the Fe concentration, that we assigned to the5 E→3 T 1 transition within the Fe2+ (3d 6) manifold. We observed also a broadening and a shift to higher energies of the CdTe absorption edge for increasingx.

Notizen: Abstract  In this study we report on the effects of N-methyl-d-aspartate (NMDA)- and dopamine (DA)-receptor manipulation on the modulation of one-trial inhibitory avoidance response and the encoding of spatial information, as assessed with a non-associative task. Further, a comparison with the well-known effects of the manipulation of these two receptor systems on locomotor activity is outlined. It is well assessed that NMDA-receptor blockage induces a stimulatory action on locomotor activity similar to that exerted by DA agonists. There is evidence showing that the nucleus accumbens is involved in the response induced by both NMDA antagonists and DA agonists. We show results indicating a functional interaction between these two neural systems in modulating locomotor activity, with D2 DA-receptor antagonists (sulpiride and haloperidol) being more effective than the D1 antagonist (SCH 23390) in blocking MK-801-induced locomotion. A different profile is shown in the effects of NMDA antagonists and DA agonists in the modulation of memory processes. In one-trial inhibitory avoidance response, NMDA antagonists (MK-801 and CPP) impair the response on test day, while DA agonists exert a facilitatory effect; furthermore, sub-effective doses of both D1 (SKF 23390) and D2 (quinpirole) are able to attenuate the impairing effect in a way similar to that induced by NMDA antagonists. The effects of NMDA- and DA-acting drugs on the response to spatial novelty, as assessed with a task designed to study the ability of animals to react to discrete spatial changes, are in good accord with the effects observed on passive avoidance. The results show that NMDA as well as DA antagonists, at low doses, selectively impair the reactivity of mice to spatial changes. In a last series of experiments, the possible role of NMDA receptors located in the nucleus accumbens was investigated regarding reactivity to spatial novelty. The experiments gave apparently contrasting results: while showing an impairing effect of focal administrations of NMDA antagonists in the nucleus accumbens on reactivity to spatial novelty, no effect of ibotenic acid lesions of the same structure was observed.

Notizen: Abstract Donor-recipient HLA matching was retrospectively evaluated in 111 cadaveric renal transplants using Takemoto's ten-residue model in which HLA class I antigens are clustered by crossreactive group (CREGs) on the basis of amino acid sequence homology and the sharing of a particular public epitope. The grade and type of HLA residue mismatching were correlated to posttransplant, class I donor-specific antibody production (monitored by flow cytometry crossmatch), rejection occurrence and clinical outcome during the 1st year posttransplant. In 52 patients with 0 mismatchings (MMs) we observed a low incidence of rejection (11.1 %) and antibody production (11.1 %) for 0 CREG MM grade, while 1 MM was enough to increase immune response against graft (rejection 35 %; antibodies 30 %). Moreover, a significant correlation was observed between Q144, E163, Q62 and L82/R82 epitopes and the incidence of acute rejection and antibody production (“immunogenic” residues) in patients grouped for a single residue mismatch.

Notizen: Abstract The influence of cell density on expression of the asialoglycoprotein receptor system in primary cultures of rat hepatocytes was evaluated by measuring the level of the receptor specific mRNA. When the hepatocytes are cultured at high cellular density and are not in a proliferative condition, the transcript molecules of the receptor appear increased about 50% with respect to the low plating density, indicating a modulation of asialoglycoprotein receptor expression at transcriptional level. Such control may be dependent on surface molecules involved in cell specific reassociation, since it is well known that cell contacts play a significant regulatory role in differentiated cells.
