Notes: The usefulness of gel filtration through cross-linked dextrans as a means of separating protein components in the water extracts of flour was investigated. Dextrans employed included Sephadex G-25, G-50, G-75, G-100, and G-200, while distilled water and several concentrations of lactic acid were used as eluting solvents. The most effective combination was Sephadex G-100 gel with 0.5N lactic acid as eluant. Although single protein components could not be isolated by this technique, it was possible to effect a simplification of the protein mixture and a concentration of some components in relatively small fractions of the eluate from gel columns. The combination of gel filtration and preparative starch-gel electrophoresis was utilized to isolate a fraction which migrated electrophoretically as a single component.

Notes: Objective To determine the efficacy of GAX collagen in the treatment of elderly women with genuine stress incontinence.Design A single centre prospective study.Setting A London teaching hospital.Participants Thirty-four women older than 60 years of age with genuine stress incontinence diagnosed on videocystourethrography.Interventions Up to three paraurethral injections of GAX collagen.Main outcome measures Subjective and pad test assessments performed pre-operatively, after one month, one year and two years after the first injection of collagen. Videocystourethrography and urethral pressure profilometry were carried out pre-operatively, after three months and one year. Results There was a reduction in urinary leakage as measured on pad testing. After two years 77% of the surviving 26 women were symptomatically cured. Objectively after two years 48% of the women were cured and 9% were improved over their initial pre-treatment level of incontinence. The cure rate was the same whether or not the women had undergone previous vaginal surgery. The maximum urethral closure pressure was not increased with treatment indicating that collagen injections do not act by producing obstruction, but this should be interpreted with caution due to the small sample size. Conclusion GAX collagen is an effective method of treating urinary incontinence in the elderly and especially women who have undergone previous continence procedures. The technique is easy to perform and particularly suitable in those who are frail, but if failure occurs after two years consideration needs to be given to its cost effectiveness.

Notes: Most genes for resistance to barley leaf scald map either to the Rrs1 locus on the long arm of chromosome 3H, or the Rrs2 locus on the short arm of chromosome 7H. Other loci containing scald resistance genes have previously been identified using lines derived from wild barley, Hordeum vulgare ssp. spontaneum. A single dominant gene conditioning resistance to scald was identified in a third backcross (BC3F3) line derived from an Israeli accession of wild barley. The resistance gene is linked to three microsatellite markers that map to the long arm of chromosome 7H; the closest of these loci, HVM49, maps 11.5 cM from the resistance gene. As no other scald resistance genes have been mapped to this chromosome arm, it is considered to be a novel scald resistance locus. As the Acp2 isozyme locus is linked to this scald resistance locus, at 17.7 cM, Acp2 is assigned to chromosome 7H. Molecular markers linked to the novel scald resistance gene, designated Rrs15, can be used in breeding for scald resistance.

Notes: Isoelectric focusing (IEF) and immunoblotting were used to detect genetic variants of malt endopeptidase (MEP1), an enzyme related to malting quality in barley and coded by the CepB locus on barley chromosome 3 (= 3H). A variant was found in a Turkish accession of wild barley (Hordeum vulgare ssp. spontaneum). The self progeny of a hybrid between this accession and the barley cultivar ‘Clipper’ were analyzed for recombination between the CepB locus and other isozyme loci. The estimates of recombination linked the CepB locus to an NADH diaphorase locus (Ndh2), which in turn was linked to the seedling esterase complex (Est1, Est2, and Est4) situated near the distal end of the long arm of chromosome 3. The Ndh2 locus was independent of two other NADH dehydrogenase loci (Ndh3, Ndh5) which were mapped on barley chromosome 5 (= 1H) in relation to the three hordein loci (Hor1, Hor2, and Hor3).

Notes: Abstract: A rigorous extraction of the deuteron charge form factors from tensor polarization data in elastic electron-deuteron scattering, at given values of the 4-momentum transfer, is presented. Then the world data for elastic electron-deuteron scattering is used to parameterize, in three different ways, the three electromagnetic form factors of the deuteron in the 4-momentum transfer range 0-7 fm−1. This procedure is made possible with the advent of recent polarization measurements. The parameterizations allow a phenomenological characterization of the deuteron electromagnetic structure. They can be used to remove ambiguities in the form factors extraction from future polarization data.

Notes: Abstract Nine women with primary ovarian failure, who were having their artificial menstrual cycles manipulated with physiological levels of estrogen and high doses of progesterone, were entered into the study. They filled in urinary symptom questionnaires and had urodynamic investigations in the two phases of treatment: estrogen and progesterone, and estrogen alone. The number of voids per 24 hours was significantly greater in the progesterone phase, as was the end filling pressure on cystometry. This is the first report in the literature of the effects of high-dose progesterone on the lower urinary tract.
