Notes: The operation of a 92 GHz quasi-optical gyrotron having a resonator formed by a spherical mirror and a diffraction grating placed in −1 order Littrow mount is presented. A power of 150 kW with a Gaussian output pattern was measured. The Gaussian content in the output was 98% with less than 1% of depolarization. By optimizing the magnetic field at fixed frequency, a maximum efficiency of 15% was reached.

Notes: A brief review of the discovery of the fatigue crack growth threshold is provided with a discussion of the main variables, Kmax and ΔK, which control the threshold over the low and high load ratio ranges, respectively. The significant effect on near threshold growth rates as illustrated by Donald are shown, for an example the aluminium alloy, 2324-T39. Attention is then turned to the ‘partial closure model’ as a means of correlating near threshold fatigue crack growth rates. This seems to be the most promising model with a physical basis. For this reason, the discussion goes on to present a new theoretical analysis of the load displacement record characteristics, which should accompany ‘partial closure’ of fatigue cracks. In addition it is concluded that secondary stress effects should be explored for near threshold fatigue crack growth rates.

Notes: Secondary elastic crack tip stress intensity factors are defined in a convenient way consistent with the primary stress intensity factor definition. Methods of evaluation of these secondary stress intensity factors are developed. They are evaluated for example configurations with cracks. It is shown that the first secondary term may be sufficient to evaluate the effects of secondary stresses beyond the usual stress intensity factor and nominal normal stresses parallel to the crack direction.

Notes: Abstract In Italy, new agroforestry cultural models could play an important role in the diffusion of plantation forestry timber species. We studied the stem growth rates and leaf water potentials (Ψ) of common walnut (Juglans regia L.), and gravimetric soil moisture (θDW) depletion during the third and fourth growing seasons in an agroforestry trial in central Italy. Since the establishment of experimental plots in 1992, walnut was intercropped with alfalfa (Medicago sativa L.), with or without polyethylene (PE) mulching along tree rows. By the end of the study period, the unmulched-intercropped walnut was almost 68% smaller in stem diameter and height than the sole-unmulched control, demonstrating walnut’s sensitivity to alfalfa competition. The competitive effect of alfalfa on walnut stem growth was effectively controlled/reduced by PE mulching. Stem growth rates of mulched-intercropped walnut were always lower than the control, but much higher (ca. 235% in stem diameter and height) than those of unmulched-intercropped walnut. The higher field performance of mulched-intercropped walnut compared to the un- mulched-intercropped treatment was associated with higher soil moisture and predawn and midday Ψ values during the summer’s driest periods. The presence of PE mulching was also associated with lower levels of soil moisture during the early and late growing season, but this did not negatively affect walnut Ψ and growth rates. These results suggest that in the climatic conditions of central Italy, competition for soil moisture between young common walnut trees and alfalfa can be substantially lowered, but not completely eliminated, by PE mulching.

Notes: Abstract From new measurements, a half-live of 4.2±0.3 s has been clearly established in127Pr. This value confirms our first result [4] and rules out other data [5]. The127Pr activity was produced by bombarding92Mo or94Mo targets with 210 MeV40Ca beams. The mass identification has been made using an ion-guide coupled with an on-line isotope separator. The partial level scheme proposed for127Ce has been deduced from β-gated γ spectra and Xγ- and γγ-coincidences. A new band structure based on a 1/2+ state is established.

Notes: Abstract: The atomic nucleus 74Kr has been investigated using combined conversion-electron (CE) and γ-ray spectroscopy. In order to confirm the existence of the expected low-lying isomeric 0+ 2 state, the possibility of an electric-monopole (E0) decay to the ground state was examined. The observation of an E0 transition at 508 keV allowed the determination of the mixing between coexisting prolate and oblate shapes.

Notes: Abstract: The high-spin level structure of the 153Er nucleus has been reinvestigated by in-beam γ-ray and electron spectroscopy with (14N,pxn) reaction. Excitation energies, spin and parity assignments are unambiguously established for the two lowest isomers T 1/2≃ 380 ns and T1/2\simeq 10 ns. The characteristics of the third one (T 1/2≃ 250 ns) at 5.2 MeV are still questionable but its main decay modes are better known. An extension of the level scheme is proposed up to 8.4 MeV.Experimental results have been discussed in terms of shell model multiplets and compared with the other structures observed in N=85 neighbouring nuclei.

Notes: Abstract: High spin states of 126La have been populated using the reaction 116Sn+14N at 68 MeV. γ-rays and conversion electrons were detected with the GAREL array. Multipolarities of the lowest-lying in-band dipole transitions have been determined from the deduced internal conversion coefficients. Experimental B(M1)/B(E2) ratios have been derived for the bands and compared with calculated values using the Dönau-Frauendorf geometrical model. Configurations are proposed for the bands comparing them with cranked shell model calculations and on the basis of the measured B(M1)/B(E2) ratios. The β-decay of 126La has also been revisited. The population of the 126Ba levels gives a probable spin value of five for the decaying high-spin 126La state with T 1/2≈ 64 s which may indicate a signature inversion in the πh11/2νh11/2 band.

    Notes: Abstract: The decay of the T 1/2 = 420 ns isomer in 151Er has been reinvestigated. The multipolarities of the decaying transitions have been established by measuring the electron conversion coefficients. An I = 67/2- assignment is proposed for this isomer with a π[h 4 11/2 d 1 3/2 d -1 5/2] ⊗ν[f 7/2 h 9/2 h -1 11/2] configuration.

Notes: Abstract: The decay of 123Ba to 123Cs has been studied with mass-separated sources. Singles spectra of -rays, X-rays and conversion electrons as well as , , and X-e-t coincidences were recorded. A level scheme of 123Cs has been constructed including 26 new excited states and 82 transitions. The existence of a I =11/2-, T =1.7 s isomer, bandhead of the h band, is confirmed. Its excitation energy equals 156.3 keV. A new T =114 ns isomer has been established at 232 keV using the in-beam recoil catcher technique. It is assigned to the I =9/2+ bandhead of the g band. Collective bands based on the 1/2+ ground state and first 3/2+ excited state are proposed. The level structure is described in the frame of the interacting boson-fermion and core-quasiparticle coupling models.
