Notizen: The cytokine profile of CD4+, CD8+ T cells, γδ+ T cells and natural killer (NK) cells (CD94+CD3–) was studied in a patient with visceral leishmaniasis (VL). The otherwise healthy, human immunodeficiency virus-negative patient acquired the disease in Tuscany, Italy. Diagnosis was made by demonstration of high concentrations of antibodies against Leishmania antigens in serum. Flow cytometry for the detection of intracellular interferon-γ (IFN-γ), interleukin (IL)-2, IL-4, IL-6, IL-10, IL-13 and tumour necrosis factor (TNF)-α expression in peripheral blood mononuclear cells stimulated with phorbol 12-myristate 13-acetate and ionomycin was performed, followed by treatment with liposomal amphotericin B. CD4+ cells were identified as major cytokine-expressing cells, capable of producing both type 1 and type 2 cytokines. A high frequency of IL-4- and IL-13-expressing CD8+ cells was noted. NK cells and γδ+ T cells, thought to be involved in innate host defences against Leishmania, expressed IFN-γ and TNF-α. Ten per cent of γδ+ T cells expressed IL-10, predominantly together with IFN-γ, suggesting additional immune-regulatory roles for this T-cell subset in VL.

Notizen: Abstract We consider a singular two-dimensional canonical systemJy′=−zHy on [0, ∞) such that at ∞ Weyl's limit point case holds. HereH is a measurable, real and nonnegative definite matrix function, called Hamiltonian. From results of L. de Branges it follows that the correspondence between canonical systems and their Titchmarsh-Weyl coefficients is a bijection between the class of all Hamiltonians with trH=1 and the class of Nevanlinna functions. In this note we show how the HamiltonianH of a canonical system changes if its Titchmarsh-Weyl coefficient or the corresponding spectral measure undergoes certain small perturbations. This generalizes results of H. Dym and N. Kravitsky for so-called vibrating strings, in particular a generalization of a construction principle of I.M. Gelfand and B.M. Levitan can be shown.

Notizen: Abstract: The temperature-induced spin crossover of iron(II) in the [ Fe ( tpa )( NCS ) 2 ] complex has been investigated by nuclear forward scattering (NFS), nuclear inelastic scattering (NIS), extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) spectroscopy, conventional Mössbauer spectroscopy (MS) and by measurements of the magnetic susceptibility (SQUID). The various measurements consistently show that the transition is complete and abrupt and exhibits a hysteresis between 102 and 110 K. The dependence of the hyperfine parameters of the high-spin (HS) and of the low-spin (LS) phase on temperature is gradual while the effective thickness (determined by the Lamb-Mössbauer factor f LM ) shows a step at the transition temperature. This step could be identified clearly because the effective thickness is measured directly by NFS. The Lamb-Mössbauer factor, the Debye temperature and the mean-square displacement of iron(II) could be determined for the HS and for the LS phase. When comparing the NIS data with the results from density functional theory (DFT), the Fe-N stretching vibrations of both LS and HS phases could be unambiguously identified and the f LM could be factorized for both phases into a lattice and a molecular part. The structural information from EXAFS and DFT geometry optimization are in reasonable agreement.

Notizen: Abstract An expression for the amplitude of a pulse of synchrotron radiation coherently scattered in the forward direction by a Mössbauer absorber consisting of randomly oriented paramagnetic iron‐containing molecules (for example, a frozen solution of a 57Fe protein) in an applied magnetic field is derived from the theory of γ optics. It is assumed that the hyperfine splittings present in the Mössbauer nuclei can be described in the framework of the spin‐Hamiltonian formalism. In the general case of a thick Mössbauer sample of this kind the response on an incident monochromatic and fully polarized beam cannot be given analytically because of the integrations involved. How nuclear forward‐scattering for this general case is evaluated in the program package called SYNFOS is outlined.

Notizen: Abstract An artificial neural network for extracting reasonable and fast estimates of hyperfine parameters from Mössbauer spectra in the energy or time domain is outlined. First promising results for determining the asymmetry of the electric field gradient at the nucleus of a diamagnetic iron center as derived with different types of neural networks are reported.

Notizen: Abstract Mössbauer studies in the energy and time domain were performed on single crystals of guanidinium nitroprusside with different orientations of their crystallographic a-, b- and c-axes with respect to the incident radiation. A remarkable anisotropy of the Lamb-Mössbauer factor is observed. Metastable states of the nitroprusside anion were populated by means of incoherent irradiation from light-emitting diodes. Calculated hyperfine parameters for the ground state and for the excited states have been retrieved from density functional calculations.
