Notes: In the framework of a general Lagrangian approach to the equations of motion for test particles with internal structure symmetry conditions and the corresponding conserved quantities are derived. As simple examples, first integrals of the equations of geodesic deviation, the Mathisson–Papapetrou and the Wong equations are rediscovered.

Notes: We report on the generation of atomically resolved nanometer-size surface modifications by applying voltage pulses at predefined locations on the surface of the layered semiconductor tungsten diselenide (WSe2). Time-stable structures with diameters between 8 nm and less than 1 nm have been reproducibly written both in air and under vacuum. For small diameters, the resulting structures have the shape of mounds, whereas for diameters in excess of about 4 nm, a ring-like appearance is observed. In both cases, the atomic order of the formerly undisturbed surface is preserved and no defects in the lateral atomic order of the surface layer are found.

Notes: Two short-period InAs/AlSb superlattices, grown with an AlAs-like interface and an InSb-like interface, respectively, were studied with Raman spectroscopy, x-ray diffraction, and ellipsometry. Our measurements show that the InSb-like interface grows perfectly pseudomorphically, whereas the sample with the AlAs-like interface shows indications of relaxation and As interdiffusion. This different interface quality seems to be a fundamental problem, rather than the result of the growth technique.

Notes: Abstract We report the growth of siloxene on crystalline silicon (111) surfaces based on the chemical transformation of a calcium disilicide layer. The siloxene films obtained show a prominent luminescence in the green, with intensities comparable to the luminescence observed from porous silicon. The structural properties of the siloxene films are studied with infrared transmission and TEM micrographs.

Notes: Abstract We report on high-resolution experiments by Scanning Force Microscopy (SFM) indicating the tight folding of neighbouring molecular chains in Poly(Ethylene) (PE) crystals. Ultradrawn PE films were prepared in the stacked lamellar morphology exhibiting crystalline lamellae and amorphous parts. The [001] direction of the lamellae is aligned parallel to the substrate surface resulting in {hk0} planes perpendicular to the symmetry axis of the probing tip. This preparation technique allows the direct observation of the molecular arrangement in polymeric crystals as well as an investigation of the crystalline/amorphous interface by SFM: at lower magnification, crystalline and amorphous parts of the film can be distinguished clearly. High-resolution imaging on the crystalline lamellae reveals a PE pitch height of 0.26±0.02 nm while the interchain spacing measures 0.50±0.02 nm consistent with (100) lattice planes aligned parallel to the substrate surface. Finally, the molecular folding at the edges of the lamellae has been studied. Evidence is found for the adjacent reentry of individual molecules at the edge of (100) surfaces.

Notes: Abstract 170 acute toxicity determinations, carried out in rats, mice, and guinea pigs after oral and parenteral administration during the past 5 years, using 5 ♂/5 ♀ animals per dose, were evaluated with respect to the possibility of a reduction of animals necessary for obtaining LD50 values with limits of confidence. Calculations were performed on existing data; no additional animal experiments were initiated for the purpose of this paper. For the majority of substances 3 ♂/3 ♀ animals per dose would have sufficed for the determination of a LD50 value with limits of confidence. Even when using 2 ♂/2 ♀ animals per dose, in most cases sufficently acceptable LD50 values can be determined, if the period of observation — conventionally 4 weeks — would be doubled. Using this procedure, 75% of the animals could be saved. The reduced number of animals and the labor saved thereby would allow for a more individualized observation of single animals thus optimizing the evaluation of acute toxicity testing.

Notes: Abstract Poly(1-butene) (PB-1) films drawn from the melt have been deposited on highly oriented pyrolytic graphite (HOPG) substrates for investigation with the scanning tunneling microscope (STM). The STM investigations showed images of PB-1 flakes extending over some hundred nanometers. Their thickness was determined to be much larger than the normal tunneling distance established between the tip and a good conducting (metallic) sample surface. Close to monomolecular film steps, our STM measurements simultaneously revealed both the atomic resolution of the HOPG substrate and a superlattice showing an ordered structure pseudomorphic to the helical nature of the PB-1 macromolecule.

Notes: Abstract Correlations between two intermediate-mass fragments resulting from 840 MeV32S projectiles interacting with197Au were measured. The angular correlations and absolute two-fragment cross sections agree with predictions of a semi-microscopic model for direct dynamic projectile break-up. This suggests a predominantly direct mechanism for the production of intermediate-mass fragment pairs. It is argued that the intensity of such a channel which, compared to decays yieldingα particles, is much larger than observed for the sequential decay of corresponding primary excited nuclei, supports the direct-break-up interpretation. The model mechanism yields also strongly damped projectile fragments of intermediate mass.
