Notes: The density profiles and correlation functions are computed exactly, at the special coupling Γ=2, for the two-dimensional two-component plasma separated by an impermeable membrane of width ε from a metal wall. In a grand canonical formalism, the Hamiltonian used includes the image forces due to the metal wall. This provides a direct calculation of results obtained previously as a limiting case of the ideally polarizable interface [F. Cornu and B. Jancovici, J. Chem. Phys. 90, 2444 (1989)], and extends those results.

Notes: It is noted that the hypothesis of independent random complex elements for the off diagonal blocks (say, M2 and M3) of the transfer matrix describing conductance in a mesoscopic wire allows the eigenvalue distribution of the matrix product M3°M3 (or M2°M2) to be computed exactly. Exact expressions, in terms of double Wronskian and Toeplitz determinants, are derived for the distribution of the smallest and second smallest eigenvalue of this and similar random matrix products. © 1994 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: For various values of the parameters in the Laguerre random matrix ensemble, the distribution of the smallest eigenvalue and the scaled n-level distribution function are calculated exactly in terms of generalized hypergeometric functions. In certain cases these functions are expressed as multidimensional integrals, from which asymptotic formulas are calculated and predictions of universal behavior verified.

Notes: Abstract We show how a number of fundamental properties of the symmetric and anti-symmetric Jack polynomials can be derived from knowledge of the corresponding properties of the nonsymmetric Jack polynomials. These properties include orthogonality relations, normalization formulas, a specialization formula and the evaluation of a proportionality constant relating the anti-symmetric Jack polynomials to a product of differences multiplied by the symmetric Jack polynomials with a shifted parameter.

Notes: Abstract This paper considers a strip of two-dimensional one-component plasma of particles of chargeq at a temperatureT such that the coupling constant be Γ=q2/kBT = 2. The strip is of finite width and infinite length and bears charge densities on either edge. Inside the strip and on one side, the dielectric constant is 1; on the other side of the strip, it may be either 1 or 0 (in the latter case, image forces play an important role). The free energy as well as the one-particle and two-particle distribution functions can be exactly computed. They obey a variety of sum rules reflecting the Coulombic behavior of the system. At large separations the truncated two-particle distribution function behaves with algebraically decaying oscillations. The strip of finite width in fact is correlated along the strip much as a one-dimensional system is correlated.

Notes: Abstract The mean-field theory of an Ising magnet with infinitely weak, infinitely long-range potentials of arbitrary sign is presented in terms of a variational principle for the magnetization. Previous studies of the theory have revealed paramagnetic, ferromagnetic, and modulated phases. For a particular choice of potential, which is an obvious continuous version of the between-plane ANNNI model interaction, exact solutions of the stationary condition implied by the variational principle are obtained. This leads us to formulate a trial magnetization to well describe the modulated phase in general. To illustrate the utility of the trial magnetization, both analytic and numerical calculations are performed, which determine the wavenumber in certain portions of the modulated phase for the above-mentioned potential.

Notes: Abstract The Coulomb system consisting of an equal number of positive and negative charged rods confined to a one-dimensional lattice is studied. The grand partition function can be calculated exactly at two values of the coupling constantΓ=q 2/k B T (q denoting the magnitude of the charges). The exact results lead to the conjecture that in the complex scaled fugacity planeξ, all the zeros of the grand partition function lie on the negative real axis forΓ〈2, on the pointξ=−1 forΓ=2, and on the unit circle forΓ〉2. In addition, forΓ〉4, we conjecture in general and prove atΓ=4 that the zeros pinch the real axis in the thermodynamic limit, with an essential singularity in the pressure at the reduced density 1/2.

Notes: Abstract The two-dimensional, two-component plasma is considered in doubly periodic boundary conditions with the positive and negative charges confined to separate interlacing rectangular lattices. It is shown that at the special couplingΓ=2, on a lattice of 2M 1×2M 2 sites, the grand partition function can be written as a double integral over a product of determinants of dimension 2M 2×2M 2. On the basis of a conjecture regarding the zero distribution of the grand partition function, the large-M 2 behavior of the determinant is given and the pressure evaluated exactly.
