Notizen: Polar Kerr rotation spectra of Fe-SiO2 granular films were measured at room temperature in the wavelength region between 400 nm and 850 nm. A maximum Kerr rotation angle (θk) of 18 min was obtained when a magnetic field of 10 kOe was applied perpendicular to the film plane. We have measured θk as a function of Fe volume fraction (fv) of the films. It was found that θk increases with increasing fv and peaks at fv≈0.4. We also found that θk decreases as the Fe particle size increases. Our results indicate that the density of Fe particles and the interfaces between Fe particles and SiO2 matrix may play an important role in the Kerr rotation of granular films. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

Notizen: The ferromagnetic resonance (FMR) spectra and coercivities of FeSi-SiO2 granular films have been measured over a wide range of FeSi volume fractions (fv). The films were prepared using the ion-beam sputtering technique and transmission electron microscopy showed that the FeSi alloy granules are embedded in a matrix of SiO2. An enhanced coercivity (Hc), as high as 329 Oe at room temperature, is observed. For some samples, there are several resonance peaks in the FMR spectra, which include one major peak and several minor peaks. The major and minor peaks correspond to the usual uniform mode and spin-wave respectively. In our experiments, the field separations between the major and the minor peaks show a complex fashion. Our results are discussed in comparison with some theoretical models.

Notizen: The dynamic behavior of ferromagnetic cobalt granules in ion-beam cosputtered Co22Ag78 samples under annealing treatment was examined by transmission electron microscopy (TEM), using a real-time video recording system. Cobalt granules about 10 nm in average size were embedded in a nonmagnetic silver matrix. It was observed that, in situ, the cobalt granules changed continually in shape and size with annealing temperature and time. We have estimated the changes of cobalt granule size from the results of TEM. The ferromagnetic resonance method was employed to study the evolution of the shapes of cobalt granules. It shows that cobalt granule shapes and sizes change mainly along the plane of the film during the process of annealing. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.
