Summary Surgically removed auricular appendages from patients with mitral stenosis were investigated for complement fixing substances with the fluorescent-serological method ofKlein andBurkholder. Surgically removed auricular appendages of congenitally diseased hearts served as controls. The cells of the Aschoff nodules, the endothelial cells of the endocardium, at times the endothelial cells of the branches of the coronary arteries, and occasionally cells of the endocardial connective tissue bound guinea pig complement in the same way as do antigen-antibody complexes. In addition, in some of the controls a similar fixation of complement could be demonstrated in the endothelial cells of the endocardium. The substances fixing the complement, as demonstrated with the fluorescent microscope, were regarded as antigen-antibody complexes. In the cases of mitral stenosis they were most probably specific for rheumatic fever; in the cases of congenital heart disease they presumably were only the result of immunological processes following infections of various etiologies.
Notes:
