    Notes: Summary Influence of pressure (P) and oxygen partial pressure ( $$P_{O_2 }$$ ) on cultivation of various Streptomyces spp. and Micromonospora purpurea was examined in pressurized air-lift and stirred tank fermenters. The maximum $$P_{O_2 }$$ was 2100 mbar. Growth and product formation of all cultures tested were markedly influenced by $$P_{O_2 }$$ higher than 1000 mbar. There is evidence that wild strains are more oxygen tolerant than production strains. At a certain $$P_{O_2 }$$ the metabolic activities of all cultures were inhibited. However, results obtained with S. aureofaciens and S. rimosus indicated an increase in specific product formation rate at elevated pressure. With increase in oxygen tension incorporation of oxygen into tetracycline molecules was enhanced. Since elevated oxygen tension can either show inhibiting effects or may be used for regulation of product formation and selectivity, the influence of $$P_{O_2 }$$ should be determined in an appropriate experimental set-up for each process.

    Notes: Summary Continuous leaching of a pyritic flotation concentrate by mixed cultures of acidophilic bacteria was studied in a laboratory scale airlift reactor. Enrichment cultures adapted to the flotation concentrate contained Thiobacillus ferrooxidans and Thiobacillus thiooxidans. During the late stationary growth phase of these thiobacilli growth of Leptospirillum-like bacteria was observed, too. In discontinuous cultivation no significant influence of Leptospirillum-like bacteria on leaching rates could be detected. During continuous leaching at pH 1.5 Leptospirillum-like bacteria displaced Thiobacillus ferrooxidans. The iron leaching rate achieved by Leptospirillum-rich cultures was found to be up to 3.9 times higher than that by Leptospirillum-free cultures.

    Notes: Summary The hydrodynamics and mass transfer behaviour of an airlift fermentor with an external loop (height 10m) has been investigated by measuring gas and liquid velocities, gas hold-up, liquid mixing and oxygen transfer coefficients. Liquid phase properties, i.e., ionic strength, viscosity and surface tension have been varied by altering the fermentation media. Results are compared with those from bubble column experiments performed in the same unit. It is shown, that more uniform two-phase flow in the airlift leads to advantages in scale-up and operation.

    Notes: In order to investigate the suspension behaviour of solid particles in bubble columns without and with draft tube, minimum gas velocities for generating and maintaining complete solid suspension were determined. Experiments were carried out in a bubble column with a diameter of 200 mm and a height of 2 500 mm. The bubble column could be equipped with a draft tube with a diameter of 120 mm and a length of 1 500 mm. The state of suspension was determined by measuring the hydrostatic pressure as a result of suspended solid particles with an inductive pressure gauge. Solid content εs, solid density ϱs, particle size dp, particle shape, particle size distribution, and solid wettability were varied. Furthermore measurements of integral gas holdup were carried out.

    Notes: Chemical engineering is taught at German universities in three different types of curricula: chemical engineering proper, process engineering (“Verfahrenstechnik”), and industrial chemistry (“Technische Chemie”). Independent departments resp. faculties of chemical engineering exist at four universities. At other universities process engineering is offered as a complete curriculum with a smaller amount of chemistry than chemical engineering curricula, mostly by the departments of mechanical engineering. Industrial chemistry is an essential component of chemistry courses at most technical universities and optional subject at several classical universities. The cause of this diversity of approaches to chemical engineering can be traced back to the beginning of the production of high-value organics (dyes, pharmaceuticals) in Germany in the second half of the 19th century.

    Notes: Wall shear rate vectors in a bubble column and an airlift-loop reactor were measured using the limiting-current electrodiffusion technique. In connection with a new circular three-segment probe, the magnitudes and directions of shear rates were determined. The results for the bubble column are in good agreement with hot film-anemometry measurements in the same column. Moreover, the spiral flow structure, postulated in the shear-zone model of Franz, has been confirmed. In addition, the measuring technique was used to determine the flow structure in an airlift-loop reactor employed for the cultivation of animal cells. The region above the gas distributor of this fermenter has been identified as critical for mechanical damage to the cells.

    Notes: In the process industries, safety problems may arise when combustible gases are transported through pipes. Therefore, it is necessary to prevent propagation of flame fronts into or through systems, in order to avoid undesired explosions and flashbacks into the production plant. Safety devices which are used in such cases are the flame arresters, e.g. water trap flame arresters. There is a maximum gas flow rate through a water trap flame arrester below which a flashback is unlikely to occur. Based on investigations of the explosion behaviour of bubbles in suspensions of glass spheres, experiments were carried out in a water trap flame arrester of industrial demensions. It is shown that the safe gas volumetric flow rate through a water trap flame arrester can be increased by up to 30% for H2/air mixtures when glass spheres are added to the liquid in the flame arrester.

    Notes: The effect of increased total pressure and partial pressures of oxygen and carbon dioxide on the growth of Pseudomonas fluorescens was investigated in an airlift reactor. In batch cultivations bacterial growth was completely inhibited with air at 8 bars total pressure. The same effect was observed with aeration by pure oxygen at 1.15 bars. Carbon dioxide partial pressure did not show inhibitory effects. Continuous experiments confirm the assumption that growth inhibition at higher total pressure is caused by the increase in oxygen partial pressure. Incubation of P. fluorescens at higher oxygen partial pressure led to an increase of bacterial productivity during subsequent continuous cultivation at ambient pressure (1 bar) with air. Maximum productivity was increased by about 75% after aeration with pure oxygen. This effect is probably the result of metabolic adaption of the bacterial cells to high oxygen partial pressure.
