    Notizen: Co–Cu superlattices grown by MBE in the (111) orientation show weak or nonexistent interlayer exchange coupling, yet several groups have observed large high-field magnetoresistance signals in excess of 30%. In the present work, we address some of the questions relating to GMR and the interlayer coupling by studying samples with atomically abrupt interfaces, as probed by real-time RHEED techniques, HRTEM, and spin-echo NMR. We propose that the lowered dimensionality of the structure leads to an enhancement of the scattering of conduction electrons from paramagnetic interfaces obeying a Langevin-like saturation at very high fields, well beyond the switching field of the Co layers. Scaling between the GMR and thermopower measurements suggests that a spin-dependent density of states at the Co–Cu interfaces is responsible for the observed magnetotransport behavior in these samples, rather than antiferromagnetically coupled Co layers.

    Notizen: We explore the relationship between interface structure and magnetic anisotropy in three types of Co-based superlattices: Cohcp-Au; Cofcc-Cu; and Cohcp-Cr, grown epitaxially on GaAs(110). For very thin layers of Co, Co-Au, and Co-Cu superlattices exhibit a perpendicular easy axis due to magnetoelastic contributions to the anisotropy energy. The magnetic anisotropy in Co-Cr is found to be strongly dependent on growth conditions. At slow deposition rates of Co the interface between Co and Cr becomes diffuse as is evidenced by a low saturation moment and a shift toward perpendicular anisotropy whereas samples with abrupt interfaces show predominantly parallel anisotropy. The Cr layers grow in a metastable hcp phase which appears to be paramagnetic. The results illustrate the influence of the heterointerface on magnetic properties.

    Notizen: We have measured the magnetic anisotropy in a series of Co-Au and Co-Cu superlattices prepared by molecular-beam epitaxy. Significant epitaxial strains give rise to a magnetoelastic contribution and a large crossover thickness (∼19 A(ring)) for perpendicular easy magnetization. The results are discussed in the context of a careful analysis of the interfacial strains and coherence determined by in situ time-resolved reflection high-energy electron diffraction techniques and x-ray scattering.

    Notizen: We report a rapid thermal annealing (RTA) enhancement of the structural coherence of Si-implanted InxAl1−xAs (x≈0.54) layers on (100)InP. Under these annealing conditions (750 °C for 30 s), the enhancement occurs only in implanted samples and is characterized by the appearance of pendellösung fringes in double-crystal x-ray diffraction. Measurements of the parallel (ε(parallel)) and perpendicular (ε⊥) lattice mismatch show a slight relaxation in ε⊥ during RTA without significant generation of dislocations (ε(parallel)=0). The results suggest an electronic mechanism for the increased efficiency of RTA in implanted samples.

    Notizen: A kinematic theory of reflection high energy electron diffraction (RHEED) is presented for textured polycrystalline thin films. RHEED patterns are calculated for arbitrary texture situations and for any general crystallographic orientation that may be encountered in thin-film growth. It is shown that the RHEED pattern can be used as a fast and convenient tool for in situ texture characterization. The approach also permits quantitative extraction of angular dispersion parameters which are useful for optimizing thin-film growth conditions. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

    Notizen: A two-dimensional charge-coupled device (CCD) detector, based on the Texas Instruments "virtual phase'' CCD, has been developed at the University of Michigan for synchrotron radiation applications. A series of performance tests were carried out at the LURE synchrotron facility, and the results show that the detector is ideally suited to measurements in dispersive absorption spectroscopy, high-resolution diffuse scattering, and small-angle scattering. The characteristics of the detector also show great promise for time-resolved experiments.

Simultaneous near-edge and multilayer scattering experiments have been carried out with the detector on an energy-dispersive synchrotron beamline. The detector was used in an optical mode where the CCD element is coupled to a phosphor screen by a pair of focusing and demagnifying lenses. We report on the performance of the detector in this mode.

    Notizen: A CCD-based, computer controlled RHEED detection and analysis system that utilizes an on-chip integration technique and on-board data manipulation is described. The system is capable of in situ time-resolved measurements of specular and integral-order intensity oscillations, their phase differences, streak linewidths, and epitaxial layer lattice constants. The digital RHEED techniques are described in the context of Co/Au bilayer, GaAs/GaAs, and InxGa1−xAs/GaAs MBE growth. The system is compared to other RHEED detection devices.

    Notizen: We report results on an improved growth process for cubic boron nitride (c-BN) films. The films are deposited on a dc-biased silicon substrate using ion-assisted sputtering. First, we grow a BN template layer at a bias voltage which maximizes the sp3 content. After this template layer attains a thickness of ∼500 Å, corresponding to the coalescence of the mosaiclike grain structure, we find that we can reduce the substrate bias to about 50% of its initial value while sustaining pure phase c-BN growth. The reduction in nitrogen ion energy results in a dramatic increase in the growth rate as well as significantly improved film quality. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.
