Notizen: We report three cases of skeletal muscle regeneration, of which two mimicked a small round cell tumour, especially a rhabdomyosarcoma.〈section xml:id="abs1-2"〉〈title type="main"〉Methods and resultsOne case presented as an intramuscular mass, located in the right quadriceps of a 12-year-old male; the second patient was a 25-year-old football player who complained of painful left peroneus muscles; the third patient was a 22-year-old male who underwent an amputation of the right thigh 5 days after right leg amputation due to limb crush. Histologically, muscle biopsy specimens showed a proliferation of small round cells, either infiltrating the striated muscle in a diffuse manner or growing within and around necrotic myofibres. Immunohistochemically and ultrastructurally, the cellular population was composed of two types of cells: phagocytic cells the nuclei of which occasionally showed a wreathlike arrangement around necrotic myofibres resulting in structures resembling Langhans-type multinucleated giant cells, and proliferating satellite cells showing enlarged nuclei, prominent nucleoli, mitotic figures, myogenic differentiation and fusion features in order to form regenerating myotubes.〈section xml:id="abs1-3"〉〈title type="main"〉ConclusionsMuscle regeneration is a benign process that may occasionally mimic a small round cell proliferation resembling a lymphoma or an alveolar rhabdomyosarcoma with which it should not be confused.

Notizen: Summary Angiotropic lymphoma can present as a vascular disease in the central nervous system. The patient described in this report had a sudden pain in the region of the right superficial peroneal nerve and a nerve biopsy showed tumoral cells in the lumen of most small blood vessels. This pathology, first described in the skin as malignant angioendotheliomatosis, can be compared with the occurrence of multiple emboli in the vasa nervorum. In recent cases, tumoral markers have evidenced a lymphomatous origin, generally of the B type.

Notizen: Summary After a left mastoïdectomy, a six-year-old child remains deeply comatose and dies twelve days later. The anaesthetic used was ether. The pathological findings included completely demyelinated areas, often sharply outlined, in the cerebral white matter and typical anoxic necrosis of the cerebral cortex and of the Sommer sector in the cornu Ammonis. Seven cases of post-anaesthetic leucoencephalopathies previously published are briefly recalled.

Notizen: Summary The present communication described changes on nerve biopsies from 16 diabetics without neuropathy, except the fact that the ankle jerks were often decreased bilaterally, as it is often encountered in diabetes mellitus. 16 non-diabetic patients with various peripheral neuropathies were also studied; the glucose tolerance tests were always normal in this group and none had any vascular or collagen disease. The three series included patients between 45 to 75 years old. Obervations made on nerve biopsies from these three groups have been compared. The basement membranes of endoneurial capillaries were measured. These measurements have been made on the thinnest part of the basement membranes and pericyte processes were not included. At least 5 capillaries per 1 patient have been studied. Averaging with a computer has permitted demonstration of significant thickenings of basement membranes in diabetic patients without neuropathy; such an observation was not made in non-diabetic patients with various peripheral neuropathies, while the thickenings were the most important in patients with diabetic neuropathy. It must be said that individual variations were encountered in each group. Nerve parenchyma has been carefully studied. In diabetic patients without neuropathy, 14 cases displayed a typical but usually moderate proliferation of Schwann cells. Axon lesions were mild and unfrequent. The exact relationships between thickening of basement membranes of vasa nervorum and lesions of nerve parenchyma need some further informations.

Notizen: Abstract We report a case of congenital neuropathy taking a rapidly fatal clinical course. Ultrastructural features of the peripheral nerve were unusual with sparsity of myelinated fibres, lack of “onion bulb” formation and presence of axonal damage. This case is compared with previously reported cases of early infantile neuropathy.
