    Notizen: In order to study sub-100-nm domains in magnetic multilayers a combination of three high-resolution imaging techniques has been applied to the same samples for the first time: magnetic force microscopy (MFM), Lorentz microscopy with a transmission electron microscope, and magnetic transmission x-ray microscopy (MTXM). The samples—atomically stacked [Fe(001)/Au(001)]n multilayers with an approximate L10-lattice—were prepared by molecular beam epitaxy (MBE) on a GaAs(001) substrate which was then locally removed by laser-induced wet etching to create a window that is transparent for 200 keV electrons and soft x-rays. Magnetization curves with perpendicular and in-plane applied field indicate a spontaneous perpendicular magnetization with an equilibrium domain pattern in small fields and reversible wall motion. About 60 nm wide domains could be observed with MFM and MTXM, respectively. Lorentz images did not show any in-plane magnetic contrast, but the domain pattern appeared when the sample was tilted. This indicates that the magnetization is indeed strictly perpendicular. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

    Notizen: Abstract: Sequence variation was found in cDNA coding for the extracellular domain of the rat γ-aminobutyric acid type A (GABAA) receptor α6 subunit. About 20% of polymerase chain reaction (PCR)-amplified α6 cDNA prepared from rat cerebellar mRNA lacked nucleotides 226–255 as estimated by counting single-stranded phage plaques hybridized specifically to the short (α6S) and long (wild-type) forms of the α6 mRNA. Genomic PCR revealed an intron located upstream of the 30-nucleotide sequence. Both splice forms were detected in the cerebellum by in situ hybridization. Recombinant receptors, resulting from coexpression of the α6S subunit with the GABAA receptor β2 and γ2 subunits in human embryonic kidney 293 cells, were inactive at binding [3H]muscimol and [3H]Ro 15-4513. In agreement, injection of complementary RNAs encoding the same subunits into Xenopus oocytes produced only weak GABA-induced currents, indistinguishable from those produced by β2γ2 receptors. Therefore, the 10 amino acids encoded by the 30-nucleotide fragment may be essential for the correct assembly or folding of the α6 subunit-containing receptors.

    Notizen: We studied the growth and magnetic properties of ultrathin Fe(001) films on Au(001) buffer layers grown by molecular-beam epitaxy on MgO(001) single crystals. Epitaxial growth could be achieved by use of a Cr seed layer. Epitaxial quality and surface structure were verified in situ by low-energy and reflection high-energy electron diffraction and scanning tunneling microscopy (STM). Magnetic anisotropy of Fe films in the range of 3–155 monolayers (ML) was determined by alternating gradient magnetometry, superconducting quantum interference device, and magneto-optic Kerr effect. The spontaneous magnetization was always in the film plane. Below a critical thickness of 7.3±0.7 ML we observe a rotation of the cubic easy axes by 45° from the 〈100〉 to the 〈110〉 directions within the film plane. This spin reorientation transition is equivalent to a sign reversal of an effective fourth order anisotropy constant K1eff. In addition, a uniaxial in-plane anisotropy is observed, which may be attributed to the step structure of the samples obtained from STM images. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

    Notizen: We developed a theory that explains the charge injection and transport in conjugated polymer films such as those used in organic light emitting diodes. Using the regional approximation the effect of the space charge on the current density of electrons tunneling from metal electrodes to the lowest unoccupied molecular orbital of a polymer film is calculated. The space charge is considered to decrease with increasing distance of the injecting electrode. If the space charge occupies only a limited region between the tunneling distance and the collecting electrode , the current (I) is found to depend on a power law of the applied voltage (V). However, if the space charge occupies all the region between the tunneling distance and the collecting electrode, I is found to vary exponentially on V for lower V values and follow approximately the law of Child at high V. The space charge limited tunneling current (SCTC) theory gives the same results of the space charge limited conduction theory when the energy barrier for charge carrier injection is small or when the polymer layer is thick. The SCTC theory is compared to the experimental data. It is shown that there is a good agreement between theory and experiment, concerning both current magnitude and current versus voltage dependence. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

    Notizen: It has been demonstrated that the expression for the temperature dependent tunneling current through a triangular potential barrier at metal/polymer interfaces fits experimental data including the deviation from a straight line observed in Fowler–Nordheim plots. The fitting parameters can be used to calculate the potential barrier height at the metal/polymer interface, which is of crucial importance for the control of charge injection in organic light emitting diodes. The tunneling current density expression reproduces the observed dependence of the current with temperature. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

    Notizen: We show that tris (8-hydroxyquinoline) aluminum (Alq3) thin films produced and characterized under ultrahigh vacuum conditions present a well-defined squared-law dependence of the injected current on the applied voltage at applied electric fields of the order of 0.25–1 MV/cm. From this, one derives an electric-field-independent electron mobility of the order of 10−7 cm2/(V s), with a variation between different samples of about one order of magnitude. Observations of current–voltage characteristics with clear indications of trap-filling and space-charge-limited conduction at high fields in Alq3 excludes the existence of traps with an exponential distribution of trap energies, as is commonly assumed in amorphous materials. © 2002 American Institute of Physics.

    Notizen: The impluse response of a fiber optic probe hydrophone (FOPH) is determined through it's step response obtained by using a self-focusing electromagnetic shock wave excitation. The experimental transfer function agrees well with the theoretical calculation of the transient response by diffraction of the acoustic wave at the fiber end face. A rise time of about 5 ns has been obtained for the shock front of the self-focusing shock wave generator by the deconvolution of the output signal of the hydrophone with it's impulse response. The FOPH can be used as a standard hydrophone for the absolute wideband measurement of shock waves of lithotripters and of acoustic waves in liquids in general.© 1999 American Institute of Physics.
