Summary Adsorption of codeine by ion exchange on swelling clay minerals (Veegum, Laponite, homoionic Bentonites) depends on particle size and charge distribution of the clays as well as on pH and ion concentration of the aqueous clay-suspensions. The exchangeable cations of the homoionic clays (Na+, K+, NH 4 + , Ca++) do not influence the exchange isotherms in the range of saturation. From X-ray diffraction measurements it is concluded that the codein cations are arranged in definite positions between the silicate layers in all clays under investigation. This arrangement allows strong interactions between the functional groups of the organic cations and the silicate layers due to the configuration of codeine.

Zusammenfassung Die Aufnahme von Codeinkationen in die Schichtzwischenräume innerkristallin quellungsfähiger (glimmerartiger) Tonminerale (Bentonit, Veegum, Laponit) wird von Ladungsverteilung und Teilchengröße der Tonmineralkristalle und den Milieubedingungen —pH-Wert, Salzgehalt der wäßrigen Suspensionen —bestimmt. Die Zwischenschichtkationen (Na+, K+, NH 4 + , Ca++) haben keinen differenzierten Einfluß auf die Austauschisothermen im Sättigungsbereich. Röntgenographisch konnte nachgewiesen werden, daß als Folge der besonderen Konfiguration und Lage der funktionellen Gruppen die Codeinkationen in allen untersuchten Tonmineralen in gleicher Weise an den inneren Oberflächen der Schichtsilikate in den Schichtzwischenräumen angeordnet sind.
