Notizen: Spark planed surfaces of pure iron have been investigated using conversion electron Mössbauer spectroscopy (CEMS), scanning electron microscopy, and x-ray diffraction. Results reveal that as a consequence of spark erosion, phases not originally present, α'- and γ-iron, are formed at the surface of the samples. The limit of carbon content of γ-Fe is estimated from CEMS hyperfine parameters. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

Notizen: Diffusion induced by 4 MeV Au++ irradiation at room temperature, normal and parallel to the substrate surface, has been studied on samples formed by a Ni film (the Ni island) which partially covers a Si film. Normal diffusion, monitored by Rutherford backscattering spectroscopy, is in agreement with previous results obtained on Ni films deposited on Si wafers. A noticeable spread of the edge of the Ni island along the lateral direction, that increases with irradiation fluence, was observed by transmission electron microscopy. When diffusion is thermally induced, the lateral diffusion length was found to be of the same order of magnitude as the normal one. However, under ion irradiation, the lateral diffusion length is two orders of magnitude larger than the normal diffusion. Electron diffraction patterns reveal the existence of mainly Ni2Si and Ni3Si2 in the layer formed along the lateral direction. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

Notizen: The epitaxial growth of FeSi2 silicides was studied by using ion-beam epitaxial crystallization (IBIEC) of Fe-implanted Si(001) samples. By employing Rutherford backscattering/channeling spectrometry and transmission electron microscopy it was possible to determine that the IBIEC process produces a γ-, α-, and β-FeSi2 phase sequence, with increasing Fe concentration along the implantation profile. The critical concentrations for γ→α and α→β phase transitions are 11 and 21 at. %, respectively. A study of the thermal behavior of these phases shows that the γ- and α-FeSi2 are metastable with respect to the β-FeSi2 phase. The γ to β-FeSi2 transition starts at 700 °C via an Ostwald ripening process. In addition a 800 °C, 1 h anneal of high Fe concentration samples produces a complete α and γ to β-FeSi2 transformation. Finally, it is demonstrated that a regular or a rapid thermal annealing on Fe-implanted Si samples induces only the formation of a β-FeSi2 phase. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

Notizen: Abstract Metastable γ-FeSi2 grown on or into single‐crystals of silicon can be produced by different techniques as molecular beam epitaxy, and ion implantation followed by ion beam induced epitaxial crystallisation. In these investigations, Mössbauer effect has been used to provide short range order information about the system. We present here a summary of these results, which will be compared and discussed.

Notizen: Abstract Hyperfine interactions associated to the phases produced by 623 K Fe implantation into Si(100) and by subsequent thermal treatments at temperatures up to 1273 K have been studied by conversion electron Mössbauer spectroscopy. The results suggest that in the as implanted sample the short range order around the 57Fe probes is \beta-FeSi2-like. This phase orders with a thermal treatment at 773 K. A preferential orientation of the electric field gradient was detected from the relative height of the quadrupole interaction components. It was found that the transition to the high temperature phase \alpha-FeSi2 occurred at least 50 K below the reported value.

Notizen: Abstract The corrosion resistance of laser-irradiated carbon steel surfaces against SO2-polluted atmospheres has been investigated by means of weight gain measurements and CEMS. The results show that the laser-irradiated samples present a higher corrosion resistance than the non-irradiated steel. The corrosion products are found to be superparamagnetic α-FeOOH and an amorphous Fe3+ oxyhydroxide.

Notizen: Abstract Iron silicide phases, grown on or into single‐crystals of silicon, can be produced by different techniques as reactive and molecular beam epitaxy, and ion implantation followed by recrystallisation processes. Different phases have been obtained depending on the experimental conditions: thickness and substrate temperature for deposited layers, ion implantation fluence, substrate temperature and recrystallisation technique for buried silicides. In most of these investigations, Mössbauer Effect has been used to provide short range order information about the system. We present here a summary of these results, which in some cases are compared with those obtained by other characterisation techniques.
