Notes: The usual powder diffraction technique needs about one hour for the registration of a pattern with either a Guinier camera or a powder diffractometer. This is a long time compared to the time of most chemical reactions and phase transitions. Quite recently the recording time has been reduced by using position-sensitive detectors and rotating-anode X-ray sources, but the registration time is still about one minute. With a Guinier diffractometer in front of a synchrotron-radiation source a time resolution of 300 μs can be achieved.

Notes: This article is a further attempt to demonstrate the role played by warrior clubs as components of the Germanic social structure and in the formation of tribal units. Since this presentation is based on a hypothesis, it is necessary to explain the methodology and in particular the model employed.

Notes: Abstract The influence of corticosteroids on the fibrinolytic activity in different tissues of the eye was investigated. Rats were treated with corticosteroids, and the fibrinplate method of Todd (1962) was used to estimate the fibrinolytic activity. After 14 days treatment with corticosteroids the fibrinolytic activity decreased. In the control eyes no fibrinolytic activity was left after 6 h of autolysis. The eyes treated with corticosteroids, however, still had fibrinolytic activity.

Notes: Summary The case of an 18-year-old female patient suffering from a haemangiopericytoma with intracranial, and paranasal and intranasal extension is described. Before the diagnosis was fully established a partial tumour removal was performed by a nasal surgeon, because the nasal airways were obstructed. Later on, because of the risk of infection, a decision against radical operation was made. The patient was treated by radiation, but the tumour did not respond and she was transferred to the neurosurgical department where the haemangiopericytoma was completely removed. A pericranium-skull flap was used to close the basal defects of dura and skull. The advantage of this technique over other procedures is the safe closure of the intracranial cavity, thus permitting a radical removal of an intracranial-intranasal tumour in one operation.

Notes: Summary In a 1-year-old German boy a GPI deficiency was found to be the cause of a chronic nonspherocytic hemolytic anemia with recurrent hemolytic crises. Because of consanguinity of the parents, the patient is true homozygote. The investigation of the biochemical properties of the deficient enzyme revealed an altered electrophoretic behavior, pronounced thermolability, an increased affinity for G6P, an increased affinity for the competitive inhibitor 6-PG, and slightly changed pH optima for both substrates. Electrophoresis after freezing and thawing the hemolysate indicates that the genetic modification of the subunit involves the mechanism of transforming the main band into the secondary bands. The properties of the new deficient GPI indicate a new variant designated GPI Augsburg.

Notes: Summary The hypothesis is developed that plateau waves (PW) are caused by an abrupt elevation of postcapillary flow resistance induced by compression of the outlets of the leptomeningeal veins. It is shown by means of a physical model that the main prerequisite for venous outlet compression consists in an elevation of the outflow resistance of the cerebrospinal fluid. Resolution of PW is demonstrated to be brought about by expulsion of fluid from the cranial vault during the plateau phase, thus allowing the outlets of the leptomeningeal veins to re-open. Brain shifting seems also to participate in this redistribution of the intracranial space in favour of the vasculature. It is further proven that PW may occur in rats with chronically or acutely increased CSF outflow resistance. PW triggering was investigated in these animals. All phenomena known to be related to PW are explained by the concept developed.

Notes: Summary Pharmacokinetic studies of 1,3,3,5,5 pentakis (aciridino)-1λ6,2,4,6,3λ5,5λ5 thiatriazadiphosphorine-1-oxide (‘SOAz’), a new antineoplastic agent containing an inorganic ring system and five aziridino groups, were performed in six patients who took part in a phase I clinical trial of the agent. The drug was administered as a rapid IV infusion. Serum decay curves could be fitted to an open two-compartment model of drug disappearance. After a short initial phase with a t1/2 (±SD) of 7.8±4.2 min a terminal phase with a dose-independent half-life of 203±17 min occurred. The coefficient of apparent distribution was 0.71±0.13. The renal clearance was 75±11 ml/min and the total body clearance 162±23 ml/min. A percentage of 46.5±6.6 of the administered drug could be recovered unchanged in the urine within 24 h. It is concluded that in view of concentrations known to be effective in vitro, administration in large single doses may be advantageous. Dose adjustments should be made for patients with impaired renal function.
