Notes: Summary Testes of human fetuses and newborns are controlled by serial sections, in order to demonstrate the form and arrangement of the tubular system. Unfortunately, this cannot be done but in a rugh schematic way because of the numerous branchings and coilings of the seminiferous tubules. Nevertheless, our investigations confirm that the tubules from also in human fetuses and newborns essentially arch-like structures with both ends returning to the rete testis as already stated by others, especially in animals. However, these arches show frequent branchings, composing therefore some kind of an arch-system or a network. Single, blindly ending tubules and blindly ending side-branches are hardly seen in human fetuses and newborns.

Notes: Summary Using a chemical assay method, which had been confirmed by chromatography, the concentration of ethambutol in CSF and serum was determined in 13 patients. Ethambutol entered the CSF, even at low serum concentrations. For serum levels greater than 1 µg/ml, a linear correlation was found between the serum and CSF concentrations. In order to reach therapeutic levels in CSF (more than 1 µg/ml) the serum concentration should be at least 2 µg/ml, corresponding to a daily dose of about 20–30 mg/kg. The serum protein binding of ethambutol varied from 39.3% at a serum level of 0.61 µg/ml, to 8.3% at a serum level of 4.82 µg/ml.

Notes: Summary Plasma levels of diphenhydramine were determined by gas chromatography up to 34 h after oral administration of 50 mg to 6 healthy men. The antihistaminic activity of diphenhydramine was assessed by reduction in the area of wheals induced by intradermal injection of 5 µg histamine hydrochloride. The plasma level of drug and reduction in size of wheal were related in 4 of the 6 subjects, but not in the other two although all six had similar concentrations of the drug in plasma. In two experiments designed to measure psychometric parameters (number facility and a time evaluation test), no relationship was found between plasma levels of diphenhydramine and the performances of the subjects.

Notes: Summary The effect of cholestyramine on the absorption of phenprocoumon and acetylosalicylic acid has been studied in volunteers by comparing their serum concentrations after a single oral dose either of the drug alone or simultaneously with the resin in a crossover repetition arrangement. In four volunteers cholestyramine 8 g significantly reduced the absorption of a simultaneous 15 mg dose of phenprocoumon. The effect of the latter on coagulation, as measured by the thrombotest method was also diminished. The absorption of acetylosalicylic acid 500 mg was delayed by cholestyramine but there was no appreciable effect on the total amount absorbed. These results are in accordance with the stronger binding of phenprocoumon to cholestyramine inin vitro experiments.

Notes: Abstract An isothermal hydrodynamic model of the motions of a multi-ion plasma in a gravitational field is developed and the properties of the flow are discussed for the case of major astrophysical interest in which the gas undergoes a subsonic-supersonic transition. It is shown that the existence of critical points thorough which the plasma has to pass will determine a large number of the plasma parameters, especially the temperature of the minor ions. The equation of motion of a two ion gas (hydrogen-helium) are solved numerically and yield the interesting result that the bulk velocity of the plasma constituents are not equal at 1 AU.

Notes: Abstract The steady-state motion of a quasi-neutraln-ion plasma is investigated using a fluiddynamical model. The main results obtained are that there are only two distinct ways in which such a plasma can make a transition from a subsonic state to a supersonic one. There is one unique possibility for which there exists one critical point where all the ion gases have their Mach numbers exactly to unity and where the individual ion forcing functios (the inhomogeneous terms) are non-zero but linearly related to each other. The other possibility which we find is that at a critical point all inhomogeneous terms are identically equal to zero and there exist as many critical points as there exist simultianeous zeros of the ion forcing functions. These results are necessary and sufficient forn≥3. For one- and two-ion plasmas special results can be obtained, some of which fit into the above two classes and some of which do not.

Notes: Abstract Transient signals measured with a pulsed rf-optical pumping method are used to determine longitudinal relaxation rates for Sr+ ions (even isotopes) in noble gas buffers. Depolarization cross sections of the electronic spin in the Sr+52 S 1/2 ground state for binary collisions with rare gas atoms are deduced. The results for σ(Sr+52 S 1/2) in Å2 are (at temperatures between 374 and 449 °K): 2·10−5(He),4·10−5(Ne), 5.7·10−3(Ar), 1.8·10−2(Kr), and 4.0·10−2(Xe). These cross sections for the Sr+ ion are about two to three orders of magnitude larger than the corresponding ones for the isoelectronic neutral Rb atom. The large increase of the Sr+ relaxation rates is explained with the relaxation mechanism of spin-orbit coupling, taking into account two “indirect” effects of the ionic charge: the increase in the gas kinetic cross sections and the more intimate collisions of the Sr+ ion with the noble gas atoms. The depolarization is shown to be predominantly due to short-range interactions. A contribution to the relaxation of the Sr+ ion from Sr+-noble gas molecule formation, induced by three-body or resonant two-body collisions, could not be established for applied pressuresp between 1.5 and 15 Torr of Ar, Kr, and Xe.

Notes: Abstract Optical pumping with the D2 resonance line can result in a zero2 S 1/2 ground state polarization at a particular buffer gas pressurep 0. For the even isotopes of Sr+ ions, the corresponding relaxation rate Γ1 of the dipolar polarization in the2 P 3/2 excited state can be calculated as a function of the mean lifetime τ of this state directly from the condition of zero2 S 1/2 ground state polarization. The calculation includes the branching decays of the 52 P 3/2 state to the 52 S 1/2 and 42 D 5/2,3/2 states, the collisional quenching from2 P and2 D states, and the diffusion of the Sr+ ions. From the calculated relaxation rate Γ1 and the measured value ofp 0, the cross sections for the destruction of the dipolar polarization in the2 P 3/2 state are obtained, σ1(Sr+52 P 3/2) in Å2: 72±9(He), 80±10(Ne), 124±15 (Ar), 148±18 (Kr), and 196±23 (Xe). The values of σ1 for the Sr+ ion are of comparable magnitude to those for the isoelectronic Rb atom.

Notes: Abstract A method for polarizing thermal ions in buffer gases directly by optical pumping is presented in detail. The production and storage of Sr+ (and Ba+) ions in noble gases, their diffusion and relevant collision processes are discussed. An arc discharge hollow cathode for the generation of intense ionic resonance lines is described. The Sr+ (52 S 1/2) and electron spin polarizations are treated by rate equations. Fitting the solutions to experimental data obtained from transient signals yields an estimate of a few times 103Å2 for the Sr+ion-electron spin exchange cross section.
