    Notes: Photoemission under high photoexcitation in thick ZnSe epilayer grown by molecular beam epitaxy (MBE) has been investigated using time-resolved photoluminescence spectroscopy. The presence of biexcitons is demonstrated under picosecond pulsed excitation as biexciton emission is observed 4 meV below the free exciton emission. The rise time of the biexciton emission follows the rise time of the free exciton and decays with a single exponential form with shorter lifetime than the free exciton. This clear observation of biexciton luminescence in MBE grown ZnSe epilayer, suggests that spontaneous emission commonly observed at lasing threshold under optical pumping at low temperatures is due to biexciton recombination. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: We report room temperature operation of a II-VI p-i-n quantum confined Stark effect modulator using a ZnSe-Zn0.8Cd0.2Se multiple quantum well structure within a ZdSe p-n junction. A n-type ZnSe layer was used as a novel contact to the p-type ZnSe. Results are given for photovoltage spectroscopy, absorption, and differential absorption as a function of the applied electric field.

    Notes: Laser diode structures have been fabricated using molecular beam epitaxy with iodine from an electrochemical source for the n-type doping and nitrogen from a plasma source for the p-type doping. CV profiling using electrochemical etching shows uniform p doping of 4×1017 cm−3 and n doping of 1×1018 cm−3. Under pulsed current excitation blue emission at 470 nm is observed at room temperature which increases in intensity at liquid helium temperatures. Above a current density threshold of 50 A cm−2 stimulated emission is observed between 448–473 nm with a complicated mode structure.

    Notes: The responses of two aquatic plants, arrowhead (Sagittaria pygmaea Miq.) and pondweed (Potamogeton distinctus A. Benn), to anoxia were compared with those of rice (Oryza sativa L.). Shoot elongation of arrowhead tubers was enhanced at around 1 kPa O2, whereas that of pondweed turions was slight in air and reached a maximum in the absence of O2. Anaerobic enhancement of alcohol dehydrogenase (ADH) activity took place in rice coleoptiles but not in arrowhead and pondweed shoots. Shoots of both arrowhead and pondweed maintained a more stable energy status than did the rice coleoptile under anaerobic conditions. Total adenylate nucleotide contents of arrowhead and pondweed shoots were constant under anaerobic conditions. Adenylate energy charge in both shoots remained at a high and stable level of more than 0·8 for at least 8 d. Three forms of ADH from arrowhead shoots were separated by starch gel electrophoresis, showing that the activity of each ADH form was different under aerobic and anaerobic conditions. The incorporation of 35S-labelled Cys and Met into soluble proteins in arrowhead shoots showed active protein biosynthesis and an involvement of a special set of polypeptides in the anaerobiosis.

    Notes: Atopy as defined in terms of IgE responsiveness was reported to be controlled by a single gene in British families, and this concept was further supported by a significant linkage between atopy and restriction fragment length polymorphism (RFLP) detected by a DNA probe specific to chromosome 11q13. To confirm this observation in a Japanese population, segregation and linkage analyses were done in four large families. Although segregation patterns of atopy were in agreement with the pattern of autosomal dominant inheritance, there was no significant linkage between atopy and locus 11q13. Alterations in the definitions of atopy did not affect the results. These findings suggested the presence of heterogeneity in genetic elements of atopy, even though atopy may be determined mainly by a single dominant gene.

    Notes: Susceptibility to asthma and other atopic diseases is known to be associated with elevated total IgE levels. Several investigators have linked the interleukin-4 (IL-4) gene and nearby markers located on chromosome 5q to elevated total IgE levels. A single nucleotide polymorphism in the IL-4 gene promoter region (C+33T) has recently been identified.As part of an effort to identify genetic variants contributing to the susceptibility to elevated total serum IgE levels, an association analysis of a newly identified promoter polymorphism (C+33T) with total serum IgE levels was conducted.The study was conducted using 240 Japanese subjects (120 asthmatics and 120 healthy controls). The IL-4 C+33T polymorphism was genotyped by PCR-restriction fragment length polymorphism analysis. The frequency of the T allele was 0.675 in asthmatic subjects and 0.671 in healthy controls. An anova model adjusted for age, sex and disease status suggested a genetic association of C+33T polymorphism with elevated total serum IgE levels (P 〈 0.05).The data suggest that IL-4 promoter C+33T polymorphism may be one of the genetic polymorphisms that explain genetic linkage or association between elevated total serum IgE levels and markers on chromosome 5q.

    Notes: Ten healthy male subjects carried out bilateral concentric leg extension training twice a week for 8 weeks. Before and after the training, maximal voluntary isometric and isokinetic strength and cross-sectional areas of the quadriceps femoris were measured. Maximal bilateral leg extension power increased significantly after the training. Isometric and concentric unilateral strength did not change significantly before and after the training, while eccentric strength at 0.52 and 1.05 rad·s−1 increased after the training with no changes in cross-sectional area. The correlations between strength and cross-sectional area increased significantly after the training. It was speculated that the increase in eccentric strength of knee extensors was due to modification of the neural inhibition during eccentric muscle actions.

    Notes: The purpose of this study was to investigate the viscoelastic properties of tendon structures in humans. Elongation of the tendon and aponeurosis of medial gastrocnemius muscle (MG) was directly measured by ultrasonography, while subjects (n=19) performed ramp isometric plantar flexion up to the voluntary maximum, followed by a ramp relaxation. The relationship between tendon elongation (L) and estimated muscle force (Fm) was fitted to a linear regression, the slope of which was defined as compliance of the tendon structures. The hysteresis was calculated as the ratio of the area within the L-Fm loop (elastic energy dissipated) to the area beneath the load portion of the curve (elastic energy input). The resulting L-Fm relationship was non-linear in form, as previously reported on animal and human tendons in vitro. The mean compliance was 4.5±1.1  ·  10−2 mm/N. However, there was a considerable inter-subject variability (2.9 to 7.2  ·  10−2 mm/N). The Young's modulus, i.e., the slope of the stress–strain curve, was 280 MPa, which tended to be lower than the previously reported values for human tendons. It was also found that the strain of the tendon structures was homogeneously distributed along their length. The mean hysteresis (energy dissipation) was 22.2±8.8%. However, again there was a considerable inter-subject variability (9.7 to 37.2%). The present results indicated that the tendon structures of human MG were considerably compliant and their hysteresis was in accordance with previously reported values.
