Notes: We present a study of the dynamics of the excitonic magnetic polarons in Cd1−xMnxTe epilayers. The transient photoluminescence measured by a streak camera under resonant excitation is analyzed with a special attention devoted to line shape of the emission signal. A nonradiative spectral region is observed in zero field and is strongly suppressed in a field of 6 T. This observation is understood to be directly related to the alignment of the Mn2+ spins and is therefore closely related to the formation of magnetic polarons. A few Mn spins are found to be aligned already within 10 ps, but the total Mn spin polarization in the sample is found to increase exponentially with a rise time of 37 ps in Cd0.73Mn0.27Te epilayers. Furthermore, the values of 19.2 and 12.4 meV were determined for the energies of the excitonic magnetic polarons in Cd0.73Mn0.27Te and Cd0.79Mn0.21Te epilayers, respectively. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: An electron of a negative hydrogen ion (H−) can be easily detached by collisions with an external laser beam or residual gas molecules in the beam line, because its electron affinity is small (0.754 eV). The detached electrons provide information about the original negative hydrogen ions and should have the same velocity as the original hydrogen ions. By measuring the energy of the detached electrons, the energy of a negative hydrogen-ion beam can be estimated. A preliminary experimental result of an energy analysis of a H− beam using detached electrons is presented. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: A new apparatus has been developed to detect and measure angular correlations between energy-selected photoelectrons and coincident mass-analyzed fragment ions from photoionization at selected wavelengths. It achieves velocity imaging for electrons and ions simultaneously and has high collection efficiency for both particles, with moderate mass and energy resolution. Angular and energy correlations between the two particles are measured, as are the angular distributions of each particle independently relative to the light polarization direction. Fixed-molecule electron angular distributions are deduced in cases of pure axial recoil. Examples of angular distributions from photoionization of diatomic molecules are reported. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Blood flow stagnation is said to be an important factor for the incidence of dark eye circles, but there are few reports, which have studied dark eye circles and the relationship to blood flow. We have examined dark eye circles dermatologically using a non-invasive method and made clear the factor related to it. We have also studied the effect of newly developed cosmetics on improvement of dark eye circles. Melanin and haemoglobin content, haemoglobin oxygen saturation and blood flow rate were measured to compare dark eye circles with a normal control. An increased amount of haemoglobin and decreased haemoglobin oxygen saturation were observed at the site of dark eye circles. We also observed that the blood flow rate was slow at dark eye circles in comparison with cheek. From these results, blood flow stagnation seems to be one of the factors that could induce dark eye circles. In addition, the increase of melanin at dark eye circles was also observed in older subjects. It was considered that not only congestion but also an increase of melanin content in the skin could induce dark eye circles. On the basis of these results, we developed anti-dark eye circle cosmetics that can improve blood circulation, reduce melanin content and maintain high moisture retention in the skin. After 3 weeks’ usage of this product, it was confirmed that dark eye circles were improved, judging from the result of non-invasive instrumental measurements.

Notes: In order to develop a magnetic material for high-density magnetic recording media which overcomes the thermal agitation effect, the magnetic properties, such as saturation magnetization and magnetic anisotropy, were evaluated for Co–M (M=Pt, Pd, Ru, Rh, Os, Cr, Ge, Mo, Mn, Re, and Si) binary alloys. Ge addition was found to be effective in maintaining the value of the magnetic anisotropy field of Co. Furthermore, a ternary magnetic alloy of Co–Ge–Cr (85 at. % Co, 10 at. % Ge, 5 at. % Cr) was found to have the following magnetic properties: Kugrain≥3×106 erg/cm3, Hkgrain(approximate)10 kOe, and 4πMs/Hkgrain〈1.0. This magnetic material is a very promising candidate for use in high-density magnetic recording media. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: We provide a possible formation mechanism for one of the Si-related paramagnetic centers in amorphous silica, Eα′, which is stable only below 200 K, on the basis of the quantum-chemical calculations. We show that the divalent Si defect can trap a hole, resulting in two different types of paramagnetic centers that are consistent with the experimental spectral features for Eα′. The highly anisotropic symmetry and the isotropic hyperfine coupling constants observed for one of the Eα′- center variants are reproduced by the present model. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: We present theoretical evidence for the creation of an electron–hole pair at an edge-sharing SiO4 site that is supposed to exist in a-SiO2 as an intrinsic structural defect. The present electron–hole pair consists of a nonbridging oxygen hole center and an E′ center, but these paramagnetic defects do not form a close pair but are separately located by over ∼4 Å. The subsequent decay mechanism along with the related radiolytic process is also discussed. © 2002 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: We present a possible mechanism of electron trapping in Ge-doped SiO2 glass on the basis of first-principles quantum chemical calculations on clusters of atoms modeling the local structures in the glassy system. The calculations suggest that the so-called "Ge(1) and Ge(2)" centers are distinctly different electron centers rather than GeO4− variants and that an electron trapped at an oxygen vacancy site is a promising candidate for Ge(2). © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: There are two major subpopulations of peripheral helper T lymphocytes: T helper 1 (Th1) and T helper 2 (Th2) cells. Surgical stress increases the number of Th2 cells, and decreases that of Th1 cells, resulting in a decrease in the Th1/Th2 ratio, and, consequently, in suppressed cell-mediated immunity. Since anaesthesia can suppress the stress response to surgery, it may inhibit the decrease in the Th1/Th2 ratio. Using flow cytometry, we studied whether propofol anaesthesia (n = 9) or isoflurane anaesthesia (n = 9) had more effect on the decrease in the Th1/Th2 ratio after surgery in patients undergoing craniotomy. The Th1/Th2 ratio decreased significantly after isoflurane anaesthesia (p = 0.011), while it did not change after propofol anaesthesia. The ratio was significantly lower with isoflurane than propofol (p = 0.009). Propofol anaesthesia attenuated the surgical stress-induced adverse immune response better than isoflurane anaesthesia.

Notes: Abstract: Cornified envelopes (CEs), rigid and insoluble structures in the stratum corneum, which are assembled by crosslinking of several precursor proteins by transglutaminases, provide a hydrophobic foundation for barrier function; omega-hydroxyceramides are covalently attached to the outer surface of CE components, and onto this hydrophobic assembly, lamellar layers of intercellular lipids are organized. Morphologically irregular, fragile CEs are found in the deep layer of the stratum corneum or in certain disorders, such as psoriasis, whereas most CEs from healthy subjects are rigid and polygonal. We have established a staining method to characterize such fragile CEs as immature and less hydrophobic CEs, and employed it to examine regional differences in the properties of CEs, especially in relation to the barrier function of the skin. CEs from the outermost stratum corneum of the trunk and extremities of healthy subjects were relatively uniform in morphology with larger shape, and were homogeneous in hydrophobicity as judged from the use of an environment-sensitive fluorescent dye, Nile red. However, CEs from the face were strikingly heterogeneous, and consisted of both rigid and fragile CEs. Rigid CEs were Nile red-positive and little stained by anti-involucrin. In contrast, fragile CEs were Nile red-negative but strongly stained with anti-involucrin, as detected by indirect immunofluorescence. Thus, CEs from the face were stained with Nile red or involucrin in a mutually exclusive manner. Fragile CEs were stained with antibodies against other CE components, including loricrin, envoplakin, filaggrin, and isopeptides. Such fragile, involucrin-positive CEs were detected not only in the face, but also in the deep layer of the stratum corneum of the arm. In addition, experimental barrier disruption resulted in the appearance of involucrin-positive CEs in the outermost stratum corneum. These results suggest that involucrin-positive, fragile CEs are immature and less hydrophobic, and that their occurrence is closely related to impairment of the barrier function of the skin
