Notizen: The leafage structure of ryegrass canopies and its role in canopy photosynthesis were compared under continuous and rotational grazing by sheep. Under continuous grazing, an increase in the intensity of grazing increased the proportion (by leaf area) of young leaves in the sward. A mechanistic mathematical model was used to demonstrate how this may have arisen, even though it would largely have been the young leaves that were eaten. However, the observations do not confirm the hypothesis that continuously grazed swards have a characteristically greater proportion of young leaves, and so a greater photosynthetic potential, than rotationally grazed ones. The proportion of young leaves increased during regrowth following severe rotational grazing (residual LAI 〈 05) and the photosynthetic potential of the canopy became greater than under continuous grazing.A model of canopy photosynthesis was used to demonstrate that the observed difference in the proportion of young leaves alone was unlikely to account for all the differences in canopy photosynthesis between managements, and further differences in canopy structure were evaluated. Despite the delay in the restoration of leaf area following severe grazing in a rotation, the total photosynthetic uptake of a system involving some 12–13 days regrowth and 3 days grazing exceeded that of a well-utilized continuously grazed sward. Re growths of longer duration led to progressively greater total photosynthetic uptake, though this was not considered synonymous with greater yield.

Notizen: A previously described model of grass growth was used to analyse the effect of the severity of defoliation and the duration of the subsequent regrowth on the overall balance between photosynthesis, gross tissue production and leaf death and so on the amount that could be harvested/consumed per hectare under intermittent defoliation. Maximum yield per hectare was shown to be achieved whenever the fluctuations in LAI during regrowth and defoliation led lo the same low average LAI that was previously shown to give maximum yield (amount harvested/consumed per hectare) under continuous grazing. Thus, it is suggested that production under both continuous and intermittent defoliation may best be characterized, and diverse managements may be rationalized, on the basis of the average sward state, the average achieved. The analysis leads us to reconsider some widely held concepts of the growth and utilization of grass applied in both agronomic and ecological theory, and the provision of practical guidelines for management.

Notizen: Renin substrate, active and total renin concentrations were measured in plasma and endometrial samples obtained from 101 patients, all of whom were having normal menstrual cycles. The endometrial samples were found to contain all of these components of the renin-angiotensin system in considerably higher concentrations than those found in the plasma. There was no correlation between the plasma and endometrial concentrations of any of these substances and it is suggested that they may be produced locally in the endometrium. A marked increase in the angiotensin producing potential of the endometrium was noted immediately before menstruation, indicating a possible function in the control of endometrial blood flow.

Notizen: Measurements of active and acid-activatable renin concentrations and renin substrate concentrations in plasma and endometrial samples taken from 31 patients are described. All of these patients were taking oestrogen-containing oral contraceptive preparations. Plasma active renin concentration was lower in these cycles than in normal cycles and the substrate concentrations higher. In the endometrium the concentrations of all of the components of the system were raised by oral contraceptives. As with normal cycles, the maximum potential for production of the angiotensins was in the premenstrual stage of the cycle. It is suggested that this increase in potential is associated with the onset of menstruation.

Notizen: The alication of nuclear magnetic resonance imaging to the diagnosis of ovarian tumours has been studied in a group of seven patients with ovarian masses and several healthy unteers who provided examples of normal pelvic anatomy. In three patients, benign unilocular ovarian cysts were demonstrated and in three patients, recurrent ovarian tumours were identified and the extent of the tumours defined. One patient with bilaterial ovarian endometriomas was imaged. Endometrial cysts, like masses in other systems which contain blood or lipid-rich material, show high-density images whereas malignant tumours show tissue densities closer to those of normal tissues. The potential value of this technique in the assessment of pelvic disease is discussed.

Notizen: Abstract A previously described growth model of the vegetative grass crop is extended to include a simple representation of the root system, uptake of nitrogen from a soil nitrogen pool, and response to fertilizer application. The model simulates the processes of light interception, photosynthesis, partitioning of new growth, leaf area expansion, growth and maintenance respiration, ageing of plant tissues, senescence, recycling of substrates from senescing tissues, nitrogen uptake by the plant, leaching, mineralization, and fertilizer application. A principal component of the model, nitrogen uptake, is assumed to depend positively on plant carbon substrate concentration and soil nitrogen concentration, and to be inhibited by plant nitrogen substrate concentration. The dynamic responses to different levels of soil nitrogen, of shoot and root growth, nitrogen uptake and root activity, carbon and nitrogen plant substrate concentrations, and the fraction of substrate carbon used by the shoots, are examined; realistic behaviour is observed. The model predicts nitrogen fertilizer responses of yield and plant nitrogen content, which are compared directly with experimental data; good agreement is obtained.

Notizen: Abstract. A crop growth model incorporating leaf area expansion and senescence is constructed. Leaf area is treated as an independent state variable with the incremental specific leaf area a function of the storage/structure ratio. The vegetative grass crop, which usually has three green leaves per tiller, is particularly considered; the above-ground dry matter is assumed to occupy four compartments: growing leaves, first fully expanded leaves, second fully expanded leaves, and senescing leaves. Each compartment is described by two state variables—structural weight and leaf area index. Newly synthesized structural material comprises leaf, sheath and stem in fixed proportions, although defoliation can alter these proportions in the standing crop. Photosynthesis and respiration are calculated in the usual way. Root growth, root: shoot partitioning, soil water and nutrients are assumed to be relatively unimportant for an established vegetative grass crop grown under favourable conditions. The model is used to simulate the time course of dry matter and leaf area development for crops that are exposed to a constant environment, a seasonally varying environment, and are defoliated.
