Notes: Measurements in the ν2 (umbrella) vibrational spectrum of CD3 are reported. The data include transitions up to and including the v2=4–3 bands and cover a wider range of rotational excitation than has been previously reported [Frye, Sears, and Leitner, J. Chem. Phys. 88, 5300 (1988)]. The spectroscopic data have been combined with all previously published data pertaining to the methyl radical and an estimate of the vibrational potential function for the species has been made. From this, we predict the positions of so far unobserved vibrational bands for all the various symmetric isotopic modifications and also extract an equilibrium structure. Preliminary results on the population distribution of v2 levels produced on the photofragmentation of acetone-d6 at 193 nm are reported and it is suggested that the methyl v3=1 and v3=0 levels may be produced in this reaction with a population inversion.

Notes: The data in the two immediately preceding papers, when combined with the extant microwave, infrared, and photodetachment spectroscopic data, provide 152 rotation and rotation-bending energy level separations in X˜ 3B1 methylene (involving 12CH2, 13CH2, and CD2). In the present paper we fit all this data using the two nonrigid bender Hamiltonians NRB1 and NRB2. The more refined model (NRB2) leads to the following results for triplet methylene: re=1.0766±0.0014 A(ring), αe=134.037°±0.045°, and the barrier height to linearity=1931±30 cm−1 (the uncertainties are three times the standard errors). Rotation-bending energy levels for CH2, CD2, and CHD are calculated for v2≤4 and N≤6. The determination of the rotation-bending energy levels in CH2 leads to an improved determination of the singlet–triplet splitting T0(a˜1A1) in methylene as 3156±5 cm−1 (9.023±0.014 kcal/mol, 0.3913±0.0006 eV). Although the rotation-bending energy levels are accurately predicted it is not possible to predict the stretching frequencies of CH2 very accurately, since the data to hand are not very sensitive to the stretching force field.

Description / Table of Contents: Summary Partial nasal obstruction in preterm and term infants increases airway resistance. It may reduce ventilation and cause disturbances of respiratory regulation. Although this is well established, nasogastric tubes are commonly used, because orogastric tubes are difficult to secure. A new technique for fixing orogastric tubes was tested in a prospective study in 11 preterm and term infants over a 4 weeks period. There was no preterm dislocation of an oral tube in 7 patients. The orogastric tube had to be reinserted once before regular change in 3 patients and only 1 patiend aged 15 weeks presented with multiple dislocations of the tube. On the basis of a 3 days period for regular change of the orogastric tube the reliability of this new technique was 86,2% for all patients and 92,5% for patients below 8 weeks of age. Conclusion: The new technique for securing orogastric tubes seems to be reliable in preterm infants before the age of 8 weeks.

Description / Table of Contents: Summary This investigation had the aim of examining the intellectual capacity of patients with operatively treated obstructive hydrocephalus. The series studied consisted of 16 males and 14 females operated on between 1956 and 1962. For the assessment of the patients psychological tests, among them a general intelligence test, were drawn upon. The test results of randomly selected patients in this group were compared with the test results of a group of randomly selected clinically unrelated patients and the differences were examined statistically. The investigation showed that in patients with operatively treated obstructive hydrocephalus minimal signs of organic brain damage develop. They were recognisable only in small areas of function. The preservation of the functions was dependant upon their degree of complexity. Diminished capacities revealed themselves partly only when the tests were performed at an accelerated tempo. The type of intellectual disturbances encountered lay in the field of a non-specific organic brain syndrome.
