    Notes: In this paper the use of strongly stretched finite difference grids is examined in detail for a simple model equation. Numerical solutions of this equation demonstrate the overall second-order accuracy of the difference approximations. The behaviour of two simple iterative methods, S.O.R. and stationary A.D.I. is discussed for several cases with strong grid stretching and with variable diffusion coefficients. The results show that grid compression near to boundaries can greatly enhance the rates of convergence of these iterative methods, whereas with grid compression in the centre the rate of convergence can be extremely slow. The case of a diffusion coefficient which increases away from the boundaries of a region is analogous to grid compression in the centre and again the convergence rates can degrade considerably.

    Notes: A special matrix is introduced, the elements of which are zero or first-order differential operators. This matrix is used to define a boundary value problem which covers a wide class of engineering applications. An equivalent variational formulation is found using an extension of the Gauss theorem. From this variational principle the equations of the elements are derived. The unified formulae presented here can be useful for educational purposes and for the design of a finite element system for total analysis.

    Notes: Correlation is a measure of similarity between two functions. When two functions are exactly similar and equal, the correlation between them is maximum. The correlation concept can be used for system design, e.g. the four-bar mechanism, the slider crank mechanism, etc. The motion generated by four-bar linkage can be expressed as a function of link dimensions, input and output angles. The product of generated function and desired function gives correlation. The best possible design would be when the deviation of actual correlation from its maximum value (i.e. 100 per cent correlation) is least. This concept, in fact, leads to a modified least squares approach and based on this an objective function is formulated and minimized to give link dimensions. The results obtained are better than the least squares technique, and this is illustrated through different numerical examples.

    Notes: The Gauss-Jordan inversion algorithm requires 0(n3) arithmetic operations. In some practical applications, like state estimation or short-circuit calculation in power systems, the given matrix is sparse and only part of the inverse is needed. Most frequently in the diagonal dominant case this is the diagonal. There are two ways to exploit sparsity to determine elements of the inverse: 1Columnwise inversion via the solution of sparse linear systems with columns of the unit matrix as right-hand sides.2Application of the algorithm of Takahashi et al6.The latter algorithm arises very naturally from multiplying the left- and right-hand factors of the Zollenkopf bifactorization in reverse order. We indicate how computing time can be gained in the important symmetric diagonal dominant case if only part of the diagonal is needed and compare computing times of the method of Takahasi et al.6 with several variants of columnwise inversion. Whereas most of the theory holds for general matrices, experiments are performed on the symmetric diagonal dominant case. For band matrices the operation count is 0(n) both for computing a column of the inverse by columnwise inversion and the diagonal by the algorithm of Takahashi et al6.

    Notes: In this work the problem of indentation of a half-space by a spherical rigid indentor is investigated using the finite element method.A system of constitutive equations applicable to elasto-plastic materials subjected to large deformations is used to determine the deformations and stresses for the contact problems. These equations represent the simplest generalization for the large-deformation conditions of the classical theory of plasticity of metals based on the von Mises yield condition and the associated flow rule. The material formulation of the kinematical and dynamical relations will be used. These equations combine the kinematic and the isotropic strain-hardening models.The results obtained from this work are compared with existing solutions for this problem that are confined to small strains and elastic, ideal-plastic materials.

    Notes: Several new finite elements are presented for the idealization of two- and three-dimensional coupled fluid-solid systems subjected to static and dynamic loading. The elements are based on a displacement formulation in terms of the displacement degrees-of-freedom at the nodes of the element. The formulation includes the effects of compressible wave propagation and surface sloshing motion.The use of reduced integration techniques and the introduction of rotational constraints in the formulation of the element stiffness eliminates all unnecessary zero-energy modes. A simple method is given which allows the stability of a finite element mesh of fluid elements to be investigated prior to analysis. Hence, the previously encountered problems of ‘element locking’ and ‘hour glass’ modes have been eliminated and a condition of optimum constraint is obtained.Numerical examples are presented which illustrate the accuracy of the element. It is shown that the element behaves very well for non-rectangular geometry. The optimum constraint condition is clearly illustrated by the static solution of a rigid block floating on a mesh of fluid elements.

    Notes: Formulation of a four-node isoparametric element suitable for modelling cracks in reinforced concrete structures is presented. The standard isoparametric element is known to give spurious shear stresses. The conventional remedy of selective integration breaks down in a ‘cracked’ element. It is shown that the proposed formulation gives superior results as compared to both the standard isoparametric element and the conventional selectively integrated element.

    Notes: The virtual crack extension method (VCE) is a very effective tool with finite elements for the accurate evaluation of stress intensity factors in two- or three-dimensional structures. The method utilizes the concept of extending any node on the crack profile in any required direction and by any required amount. A new facility stores a relevant substructure of crack tip stiffnesses so that any number of restarts, each with a new set of extensions, can be performed. Different nodes around three-dimensional crack profiles can be considered, either at vertex or midside node positions. The extension of the vertex nodes, in particular, also involves moving adjacent midside nodes along the profile, and different ways of effecting this, together with the calculation of the relevant area change, have been introduced and are described along with illustrative examples.

    Notes: A multiple-parameter reduced basis technique and a problem-adaptive computational algorithm are presented for the bifurcation and post-buckling analyses of composite plates subjected to combined loadings. The computational algorithm can be conveniently divided into three distinct stages. The first stage is that of determining the stability boundary. The plate is discretized by using displacement finite element models and the analysis region is reduced by exploiting the special symmetries exhibited by the response of the plate. The vector of unknown nodal displacements is expressed as a linear combination of a small number of path derivatives (derivatives of the nodal displacements with respect to path parameters), and a Rayleigh-Ritz technique is used to approximate the finite element equations by a small system of algebraic equations. The reduced equations are used to determine the stability boundary of the plate.In the second stage, a nonllnear solution in the vicinity of the stability boundary is obtained by using a bifurcation buckling mode as a predictor, and a set of reduced equations is generated. In the third stage, the reduced equations are used to trace post-buckling paths corresponding to various combinations of the load parameters.The potential of the proposed approach is discussed and its effectiveness is demonstrated by means of a numerical example of laminated composite plate subjected to combined compressive and shear loadings.

In finite element approximations, however, small time steps may cause stability problems which lead to physically unreasonable results.     Notes: Boundary integral equation methods are presented for the solution of some two-dimensional phase change problems. Convection may enter through boundary conditions, but cannot be considered within phase boundaries. A general formulation based on space-time Green's functions is developed using the complete heat equation, followed by a simpler formulation using the Laplace equation. The latter is pursued and applied in detail. An elementary, noniterative system is constructed, featuring linear interpolation over elements on a polygonal boundary. Nodal values of the temperature gradient normal to a phase change boundary are produced directly in the numerical solution. The system performs well against basic analytical solutions, using these values in the interphase jump condition, with the simplest formulation of the surface normal at boundary vertices. Because the discretized surface changes automatically to fit the scale of the problem, the method appears to offer many of the advantages of moving mesh finite element methods. However, it only requires the manipulation of a surface mesh and solution for surface variables. In some applications, coarse meshes and very large time steps may be used, relative to those which would be required by fixed grid domain methods. Computations are also compared to original lab data, describing two-dimensional soil freezing with a time-dependent boundary condition. Agreement between simulated and measured histories is good.

    Notes: A clearer understanding of the problems associated with reduced integration and optimum integration schemes for the development of Mindlin plate elements is presented. It is shown that an optimal selective integration rule can be found for the 4-node quadrilateral plate bending element which requires 2 × 2 Gaussian integration for bending energy and 1 × 2 and 2 × 1 rules for the shear energy terms from (θx - w,x) and (θy - w,y), respectively. This will give an element of correct rank, without any zero energy mechanisms and without shear locking in the thin plate limit, and better performance in moderately thick situations than the currently available 4-node quadrilaterals using one-point shear integration or modified one-point shear integration due to Hughes et al.     Notes: A decomposition procedure is proposed in this paper for solving a class of large-scale optimum design problems for perfectly-plastic structures under several alternative loading conditions. The conventional finite element method is used to cast the problem into a finite dimensional constrained nonlinear programming problem. Structures of practically meaningful size and complexity tend to give rise to a large number of variables and constraints in the corresponding mathematical model. The difficulty is that the state-of-the-art mathematical programming theory does not provide reliable and efficient ways of solving large-scale constrained nonlinear programming problems. The natural idea to deal with the large-scale structural problem is somehow to decompose the problem into a collection of small-size problems each of which represents an analysis of the behaviour of each finite element under a single loading condition. This paper proposes one such way of decomposition based on duality theory and a recently developed iterative algorithm called the proximal point algorithm.

    Notes: A number of numerical methods for mildly nonlinear elliptic boundary value problems on general domains is presented. The discretization procedures considered are: a fourth-order FFT-type method, collocation using Hermite bicubic splines and Galerkin with linear triangular as well as quadratic quadrilateral isoparametric elements. The linearized collocation and Galerkin equations are solved by various direct methods available in the ELLPACK system. A comparative study of the above equation solvers is presented for different domain geometries and compilers. The evaluation of software for the general mildly nonlinear elliptic equations is performed over 36 instances from a population of 16 parametrized problems with ‘real world’ and ‘mathematical’ behaviour. The performance data suggests that collocation is an effective method for such general problems, while Galerkin with quadratic quadrilateral isoparametric elements is uniformly superior to the one with linear elements.

    Notes: The Davidon-Fletcher-Powell (DFP) algorithm for multivariable unconstrained nonlinear function minimization is implemented on a desk microcomputer - the Hindustan Computers MICRO-2200 - with a floppy disk memory extension peripheral. The program is developed using the programming keys of the system. The program is closely based on FMFP, a well-known FORTRAN subroutine of the algorithm. Among the exercises performed are two standard nonlinear programming (NLP) test problems, namely the Rosenbrock and Wood function minimization and two SUMT (Sequential Unconstrained Minimization Technique) illustration problems in structural optimization, i.e. two-bar and three-bar truss weight minimization examples.     Notes: The heating (or cooling) of the rock adjacent to water flowing through a crevice is of interest in certain geothermal studies. For many purposes, only the rock temperature at the rock-water interface is needed. The fact that the convective heat transfer coefficient is a function of time in the case of unsteady flow takes this problem out of the strictly classical domain.Several methods of solution are described. An approach in which the heat equation is solved, under appropriate side conditions, by standard finite difference techniques is shown to be satisfactory but rather wasteful because much unneeded information concerning internal rock temperatures must be obtained. Several integral equations of Volterra type are derived that provide the temperature only at the interface. Two numerical approaches to their solution are described: one quite classical and only partially effective; the other an apparently new algorithm that is fast and efficient. Analytical upper and lower bounds on the temperature are obtained and serve to demonstrate that this numerical device is also very accurate.The algorithm is applicable to a wide class of Volterra integral equations of the second kind. A brief discussion of the possible future uses of this scheme and the need for additional research is given.

    Notes: Treatment of the finite element method for an unbounded field problem was proposed by McDonald and Wexler in 1972. Their method is superior to others, because it can exclude the singularities of Green's functions. This paper explains the treatment of the method in our 1979 letter which had some revisions of McDonald and Wexler's and calculated the time-harmonic field problems. Examples presented are electromagnetic fields of two-dimensional tapers which are open-ended. Electromagnetic waves propagate in the taper and radiate from the taper to free space. In this case, the exact solutions for radiation from tapers are not available because of the complicated shape, and so the finite element method is useful in solving these problems. Electromagnetic fields of tapers involving dielectric slabs are also calculated as examples of inhomogeneous problems.

    Notes: Procedures for smoothing experimentally determined displacement fields are presented such that dynamic, non-steady-state metalworking processes can be analysed using the visioplasticity method. The procedure establishes a rectangular grid in which strain, strain rate and stress values may optionally be obtained at all points on the grid. The condition of material continuity is automatically satisfied by constraints during polynomial smoothing in position and time, using the Gram-Schmidt orthogonalization technique. Examples are given of quasi-static and dynamic plane strain upsetting operations.

    Notes: An analysis of the stability and oscillation properties of upwind finite element methods for convection-diffusion is given and used to develop a variable upwinding formulation. This formulation is particularly well suited to problems with nonconstant coefficients, nonlinearity or non-uniform meshes. We present the theoretical analysis and numerical studies for a standard steady-state and transient model one-dimensional convection-diffusion problem. The variable upwind strategy can also be used to significant advantage in conjunction with adaptive mesh refinement. Numerical results for the steady-state case in which convection dominates and the mesh is adaptively refined into a boundary layer confirm the efficacy of the scheme.

    Notes: Pipe networks are computed in an analogous mannner to frameworks in structural mechanics loaded only by moments. The mesh method (force method) is applied. Due to the boundary layer effects in special pipe members, the flow problem is in general nonlinear. Therefore, the Newton-Raphson iteration procedure is used to solve the nonlinear system of equations. Using the computed flow rates in the TREE structure (determined by graph theory) as initial values, the iteration procedure converges rapidly to a user specified tolerance value. The loss coefficients of pressure for different pipe members (TUBE, VALVE, BOW, TEE, PUMP, KNEE, ±CONTR, ±DIFSR) need only be given in diagrams. These diagrams are used in digitalized form. In the back-substitution phase with known flow rates in all members, the pressure at the joints is computed.The main advantages of the analysis as outlined are that no initial values for the member flow rates need be known, the iteration procedure converges rapidly, and within each iteration step only small systems of linear equations need to be solved. Due to the fact that the loss coefficients of pressure need only be given in diagrams, arbitrary nonlinear networks can be analysed by the unchanged program system. A flow rate assumption may be specified in the input for a member of a mesh.The pressures at the joints are defined as unknowns (displacement method) in References 7, 8 and 10. The flow rates in the members are defined as unknowns (force method) in Reference 9. The nonlinear system of equations is always solved by the Newton-Raphson procedure. In Reference 10 a strategy is presented to take into account different pipe members, but in a different way from that outlined in this paper. The members BOW, TEE, KNEE, CONTR, DIFSR are not examined in Reference 10.

    Notes: This paper presents a geometrically nonlinear formulation using total lagrangian approach for the three-dimensional curved shell elements. The basic element geometry is constructed using the coordinates of the middle surface nodes and the mid-surface nodal point normals. The element displacement field is described using three translations of the mid-surface nodes and the two rotations about the local axes. The existing shell element formulations are restricted to small nodal rotations between two successive load increments. The element formulation presented here removes such restrictions. This is accomplished by retaining nonlinear nodal rotation terms in the definition of the displacement field and the consistent derivation of the element properties. The formulation presented here is very general and yet can be made specific by selecting proper nonlinear functions representing the effects of nodal rotations. The element properties are derived and presented in detail. Numerical examples are also presented to demonstrate the behaviour and the accuracy of the elements.

    Notes: An elasto-plastic analysis of thin plates and shells by means of the finite element displacement method is considered for anisotropic materials, using the Semiloof curved shell element. The elasto-plastic analysis is based on the Huber-Mises yield criterion extended by Hill for anisotropic materials. The yield function is generalized by introducing anisotropic parameters of plasticity which are updated during the material strain hardening history.Numerical examples are presented and compared with available solutions. The effects of anisotropy on these solutions are also discussed. The practical problem of an aerofoil blade is also considered and some results presented.

    Notes: An algorithm to generate universal matrices for plane triangular finite elements for the general ‘quasi-harmonic’ equation is presented. For every member of the triangle family three numerical universal matrices are obtained which are independent of the size, shape and ‘material’ properties of the element. Of these, two are basic and the third can be generated from one of these two. The element ‘stiffness’ matrix is conveniently generated by manipulating these two basic matrices taking into account the size, shape and material properties of the element in a simple manner.

    Notes: The method of differential quadrature is demonstrated by solving the two-dimensional Poisson equation. The results for three test problems are compared with the exact analytical solutions and the numerical solutions obtained by others for the Galerkin, the control-volume and the five-point finite difference methods.     Notes: A nonlinear, large deflection, elasto-plastic finite element code (EPSA) has been developed for the analysis of shells in an acoustic medium subjected to dynamic loadings. The nonlinear equations of shells are discretized with the aid of a finite difference/finite element method based upon the principle of virtual work. The resulting system of equations contains the nodal displacements as the generalized co-ordinates of the problem. The integration in time of the equations of motion is done explicitly via a central difference scheme.Shell strain-displacement relations are established by a two-dimensional finite difference scheme. The shell constitutive equations are formulated in terms of the shell stress resultants and the shell strains and curvatures. The fluid-structure interaction is accounted for by means of the doubly asymptotic approximation (DAA) expressed in terms of orthogonal fluid expansion functions. The analytically produced results satisfactorily reproduce available experimental data for dynamically loaded shells.

    Notes: In this paper a new concept for development of algorithms for optimal design of engineering systems is presented. The basic idea is to use upper and lower bounds on optimum cost to develop iterative search strategies. The main feature of the concept is that it does not rely on one-dimensional search to compute a step size at any design iteration. Implication of the feature is that the algorithms based on this concept require evaluation of constraint functions only once at any design iteration. This is highly desirable for optimal design of engineering systems because evaluation of functions for such systems is very expensive due to their implicit dependence on design variables. An algorithm based on the new concept is derived in the paper. Several new step sizes are introduced and their relation to proper reduced optimal design problems are presented. A new step size based on the constant cost requirement at some design iterations is introduced. Numerical aspects for the algorithm are also presented. Based on the new algorithm, a general-purpose computer code GRP2 is developed. The code is used to solve several problems to gain experience and insight for the algorithm. Numerical experience with examples is discussed. It is concluded that algorithms based on bounding optimum cost have substantial potential for applications in optimal design of engineering systems.

    Notes: In this publication we present a new infinite element and discuss a formula for numerical quadrature over infinite regions. Both the element and the formula are based on the properties of a set of orthonormal functions, obtained by mapping the Legendre polynomials on the infinite interval. The element can represent any (physical) function over the entire infinite region, and the formula can integrate most integrands over the infinite interval. They are thus very convenient for implementation in a general computer program, which could then be used to solve different problems with no restrictions concerning the asymptotic behaviour of the solutions or the form of integrands to be integrated over the infinite interval. However, the element and the formula will perform at their best when used in conjunction, and for problems of electrostatic, magnetostatic, etc., potential.The formula was compared with other existing formulae and found to be either superior or satisfactory in practically all cases, as shown by the results of many numerical experiments.Expressions of shape functions are given for the element. A test problem was solved using the element and the formula, and the results are shown to be more accurate than those obtained when solving the same problem using infinite elements with exponential decay and Gauss-Laguerre numerical quadrature.

    Notes: The chromatographic behavior of phenols in reversed-phase mode liquid chromatography differs from that of non-ionic compounds such as alkyl alcohols, alkylbenzenes, halogenated benzenes, polyaromatic hydrocarbons, and aromatic acids. Therefore, the retention times of 61 phenols were measured in a system of an octadecyl bonded silica gel and acetonitrile/water mixtures. The logarithm of the capacity ratio (log k') was found to be a linear function of the hydrophobicity (log P) in acidic acetonitrile/water mixtures. This result was applied to a different octadecyl bonded silica gel. Eight phenols were selected as standard compounds, and their log k' values were measured in 0.05 M phosphoric acid in 10 to 90% acetonitrile/water mixtures. An empirical polynomial relation was obtained between the concentration of acetonitrile and the slope of the log k' vs log P curve. Finally the capacity ratio of all phenols were calculated in given eluents by the equations derived from the measurements of standard compounds and the calculated log P values. The difference between predicted capacity ratios and measured ones was within 10%.

    Notes: Silane-coupling agents, commonly used for fiberglass reinforced plastics (FRP), were applied for deactivation of silanol sites in glass capillary columns prior to coating with mediumpolarity phases such as Carbowax and Superox. The columns, prepared in a two-stage process in the case of glass (acidic leaching and drying, dynamic cold silanization followed by static coating with the phase) or a one stage process in the case of fused silica, gave the best results when deactivation and hence wettability were induced by glycidoxypropyltrimethoxy silane.

    Notes: A test mixture containing 28 compounds plus their stable isotopically labeled analogs was analyzed on a daily basis for one month during a series of routine fused silica capillary column GC/MS analyses in order to establish the precision with which retention times and responses were produced. These long-term precision data were evaluated to determine how to best predict retention times and how to best reproduce quantification. Results clearly indicate that relative retention times should be calculated using the reference compound eluted most closely to the target compound and that quantification should be based on relative response using a chemically “similar” compound.

    Notes: A method is described for the determination of fenvalerate (cyano(3-phenoxyphenyl)methyl 4-chloro-α-(1-methylethyl)-benzeneacetate) residues on woolen cloth. The fenvalerate was Soxhlet-extracted from the treated fabric with acetone for four hours at a reflux rate of six solvent exchanges per hour. The fenvalerate residue was determined by gas-liquid chromatography with a flame ionization detector. The results were quantitated by comparing integrator counts obtained from extracts of treated samples with those obtained from known standards. The method was sensitive to 0.00054% fenvalerate by weight. Recoveries from fabric treated with 0.00054% to 0.215% averaged 94.8%. The response of the detector was linear over a 400-fold range of fenvalerate concentrations.

    Notes: Five commercial varieties of uncoated fused silica capillary tubing used in high resolution gas chromatography were subjected to cobalt-60 gamma radiation. The advantages and superior performance of fused silica open tubular columns coated with OV-1 and subsequently immobilized or crosslinked in situ by radiation is reported in a previous paper in this Journal; however, in this investigation a loss in flexibility of irradiated capillaries was also noted. Quantitative measurements on flexibility were performed on specimens of irradiated fused silica capillaries, indicating that changes do indeed occur upon irradiation. Scanning electron micrographs also illustrate slight deterioration of the outer protective polyimide coating. Most surprisingly, it was also established that a variation does exist in the flexibility of the commercially available raw material studied.
