    Description / Table of Contents: On the Diagnosis of the Causes of Corrosion Processes from Corrosion ProductsContrarily to the highly developed art of diagnosis in medicine, the chances of diagnosing in corrosion have not been regarded, except for some individual cases. So, the author presents a general survey of the possibilities of diagnosis from corrosion products. The composition, the distribution, the color, the velocity of dissolution and the crystal structure of the corrosion products allow to infer the causes of corrosion. Some diagnoses are reliable, others allow to draw conclusions under curtain conditions only. The treatment is completed b y some exampels. Finally che cases of misdiagnoses are discussed.
    Notes: Im Gegensatz zu der hochentwickelten Diagnose in der Medizin sind auf dem Korrosionsgebiet Diagnosemöglichkeiten nur in wenigen Einzelfällen beachtet worden. Zur Behebung dieses mangels gibt der Verfasser einen allgemeinen Überblick über die Diagnosemöglichkeiten aus den Korrosionsprodukten. Rückschlüsse auf die Korrosionsursachen erlauben die Zusammensetzung, die Verteilung, die Farbe, die Lösungsgeschwindigkeit und die Kristallstruktur der Korrosionsprodukte. Einige Diagnosen sind völlig sicher, andere lassen nur bedingte Schlüsse zu. Die Ausführungen wurden durch einzelne Beispiele belegt. Zum Schluß wird die Möglichkeit von Fehldiagnosen behandelt.

    Description / Table of Contents: Measurement of Intercrystalline Corrosion by Resonance VibrationAn apparatus to measure intercrystalline corrosion by means of resonance vibrations was constructed. A specimen, showing intercrystalline corrosion as produced by a treatment in a standard solution or some how else, is subjected to the vibrations of a magnetic exitor which is fed by an amplified vibration generator. Reaching the frequency of resonance which is changing according to the degree of the corrosive attack, is indicated by modification of the sound of the specimens or by means of silicon carbide powder which is gathered in the nodal point. The accuracy of measurement depends on the force of fastening the specimen, on its position on the support and on the position of the ferromagnetic case if nonmagnetic specimens are investigated. The evaluation of the measurements is carried out by calculating the modifications of the frequencies of resonance in time or by graphic comparison of curves of different materials.
    Notes: Es wurde eine Einrichtung zur Messung der interkristallinen Korrosion mittels einer Methode der Resonanzfrequenz ausgearbeitet. Die geprüfte Probe, auf der die interkristalline Korrosion hervorgerufen wurde, sei es in Standardlösungen oder in realen Medien, wird mittels eines magnetischen erregers, der über einen Verstärker von einem Schwingungsgenerator gespeist wird, in Schwingungen versetzt. Das erreichen der Resonanzfrequenz, die sich mit dem Grad des Korrosionsanfalles ändert, wird durch die Tonänderung der Probe oder mittels Siliziumkarbid-Pulver, das sich bei der Resonanz im Schwingungsknotenpunkt ansammelt, indiziert. Die Genauigkeit der Messung hängt von der Kraft der Einspannung der Probe, von der Lage der probe im Stativ, bzw. von der Lage der ferromagnetischen Hülse (beim Messen unmagnetischer Materiale) ab. Die Auswertung der Messungen wird entweder durch Berechnung der Änderung der Resonanzfrequenz in einem gewissen Zeitabschnitt, oder durch graphisches Vergleichen der verschiedenen materialkurven (Zeitabhängigkeiten) durchgeführt.

    Description / Table of Contents: Modern Methods of LiningAt first the problems of planning and constructing extern heated (or cooled) containers With chemical, therma1 and mechanical resistent linings are discussed. This is followed by a definition of the swelling power of lining. By means of numericla data the effect of the swelling power upon the tensions in the coat and the lining under conditions of operation is demonstrated.Finally the possibilities of thin linings in intern heated apparatus with outside heat insulations using materials as mentioned above are discussed.
    Notes: Besprochen werden zunächst die Gründe, die zur Planung und Ausführung außen beheizter (oder gekühlter) Behälter mit chemisch, thermisch und mechanisch beständiger Ausmauerung führen. Sodann wird der Begriff „Quellfähigkeit“ des Mauerwerks erläutert und anhand eines Zahlenbeispiels seine Wirkung auf die unter Betriebsbedingungen in Mantel und Mauerwerk auftretenden Spannungen in groß Zügen dargestellt.Ein Hinweis auf die Möglichkeit dünnwandiger Ausmauerung innenbeheizter Apparate mit äußerer Wärmeisolierung unter Verwendung der vorher beschriebenen Baustoffe (über die bereits an anderer Stelle berichtet wurde) bildet den Abschluß des Referates.

    Description / Table of Contents: The Stability of Molybdenium Sulfide against Gases of High TemperaturesMolybdenium sulfide is gaining technological importance because of its excellent lubricating property. As there are no datas on the stability of this material at high temperatures measurements were carried out. The stability is given by the „critical temperature“. It is reached if ≦ 1 pct. of the molybdenium sulfide specimens is decomposed after 30 min duration of action in the flowing gas. The critical temperatures are air 280° C, hydrogen 715° C, hydrogen-nitrogen (20:80 vol-pct.) 870° C, hydrogen-nitrogen (12:88 vol-pct.) 985° C.For practical application the degrees of decomposition of molybdenium sulfide powder are maximum values because smear films suffer a much lower decomposition.
    Notes: Molybdändisulfid findet wegen seiner ausgezeichneten Schmiereigenschaften in neuerer Zeit steigendes technisches Interesse. Da über die Beständigkeit dieses Werkstoffes bei höheren Temperaturen in verschiedenen Gasatmosphären noch verhältnismäßig wenig bekannt ist, wurden Messungen hierzu durchgeführt. Als relatives Maß für die Beständigkeit werden “Grenztemperaturen” mitgeteilt, bis zu denen nach 30 min Einwirkungsdauer in strömendem Gas ≦ 1% der vorhandenen Molybdändisulfid - Menge zersetzt ist. Diese „Grenztemperaturen“ betragen für:Luft 280°C, fürWasserstoff 715°C, fürWasserstoff-Stickstoff (20:80 Vol.-%)870°CWasserstoff-Stickstoff (12:88 Vol.-%)985°CDie für Molybdändisulfid-Pulver gemessenen Zersetzungsgrade sind bei Anwendung in der Praxis als Höchstwerte anzusehen, da bei eingeriebenen Filmen eine u. U. wesentlich geringere prozentuale Zersetzung zu erwarten ist.

    Description / Table of Contents: On the Cathodic Protection of Buried Refinery EquipmentThe metals of refinery equipment can corrode if they are exposed to soils in which a combined action of salt bearing water and oxygen takes place. This corrosion is easily prevented by cathodic protection. The protective potential is generated either by a source of direct current or by galvanic cells. It must be slightly more negative than the corrosion potential. The application and the advantages of the necessary anodes of magnesium, zinc or aluminium, their effects and their way of action are discussed in detail. Exact investigations of the soil conditions, especially measurements of the electric resistance, the potential differences, the protective potentials and of leakage currents must be carried out and the required current densities must be calculated before the protective system is installed. The methods and the kinds of the necessary measurements are discussed. The selection of the places and the planful installation of the anodes is of biggest importance. Here the advantages of the horizontal and vertical anodes are discussed. Finally some directions for the calculation of charges of the cathodic protection are given.
    Notes: In Raffinationsanlagen kann Metall u. a. auch korrodieren, wenn es dem Erdboden ausgesetzt wird, wenn ein Zusammernwirken von salzhaltigem Wasser mit Sauerstoff stattfindet. Dieser Erdkorrosion kann durch kathodischen Schutz wirksam begegnet werden. Er wird durch Anlegen eines von einer Gleichstromquelle oder mittels eines galvanischen Elementes erzeugten Potentials erreicht, das etwas größer ist als das Korrosionspotential. Die Verwendung und Vorteile der hierfür erforderlichen und im Erdboden einzubringenden galvanischen Anoden aus Magnesium, Zink oder Aluminium, ihre Wirkung und Arbeitsweise, werden ausführlich erörtert. Vor Einbau eines kathodischen Schutzsystems sind genaue Untersuchungen der im Erdboden herrschenden Verhältnisse an Ort und Stelle vorzunehmen, insbesondere Messungen des elektrischen Widerstandes, der Potentialdifferenzen, Schutzpotentiale, evtl. Streuströme und des Strombedarfs des kathodischen Systems. Methoden und Arten der auszuführenden Messungen werden beschrieben. Die Auswahl des Platzes und die planmäßige Anbringung der Anoden im Erdboden ist von größter Bedeutung. Hierbei werden die Vorteile der Vertikal- und Horizontalanoden erörtert. Richtlinien für die Kostenberechnung des kathodischen Schutzes werden zum Schluß gegeben.

    Description / Table of Contents: The Intercrystalline Corrosion and teh Attack at Grain BoundariesThe intercystaline corrosion in dependence of the degree of desorientation of touching grains was investigated by means of an Al Mg alloy which was made susceptible to intercystalline corrosion by heat treatments. The experiments show that the intercrystalline attack depends very much on the degree of desorientation especially at 4 and 16°. The results being explained by the lattice energy and the lattic structure theories allow to make a distinction between fine, micro and macro angle grain boundaries. The author shows finally that the intercrystalline attack will be caused by the type and form of inhomogeneous corings of one or more phases at grain boundaries of more than 5° but not by the elastic-potential lattice energy.
    Notes: Untersucht wurde die Abhängigkeit der interkristallinen Korrosion vom Desorientierungsgrad sich berührender Kristallkörner an einer durch Wärmebehandlung interkristallin anfällig gemachten AlMg-Legierung. Die Versuchs ergaben grundsätzlich eine starke Abhängigkeit des interkristallinen Angriffs vom Desorientierungsgrad mit Angriffsspitzen bei 4 und 16°. Die Versuchsergebnisse, die gitterenergetisch und gittergeometrisch erklärt werden, führen zur Unterscheidung vou Fein-, Klein- und Großwinkel-Korngrenzen. Schließlich wird gezeigt, daß die clastisch-potentielle Gitterenergie den interkristallinen Angriff nicht ursächlich bestimmt, sondern die Art und Form sich bildender inhomogener Entmischungen ein- und vielphasiger Art an Korngrenzen über 5°.

The Corrosion Chemical Behavior of Aluminium in Hydrochloric Acid and Sodium Hydroxide Solutions Containing Alkalimono- and Alkali Hydrogen FluoridesStarting from investigations on the solubility of Al, Al Mg Si and Al Mg alloys especially in KF-solutions of different concentrations  -  After a short duration of action teh metals mentioned will be protected against further attack effectively by dense, well adhering covers.  -  the inhibition of the attacks of 0.1 n HCL and 0.1 n NaOH solutions upon pure Al (99.9) were tested under stationary conditions by addition of different quantities of KF-resp. KF. HF-resp. NH4F.HF. While the metal will suffer no attack in KF-solutions, slight attack in KF.HF-solutions and strong attack in NH4F.HF-solutions additions of KF.HF or NH4F.HF do not influence the solvation of Al (99,9) in 0.1 n HCl in 0.1 n NaOH solutions little additions of fluorides suppress the attack intensely. Under good conditions teh decrease amounts to 98 pct.
    Notes: Ausgehend von Lösungsversuchen mit Al, AlMgSi- und AlMg-Legierungen insbesondere in KF-Lösungen verschiedener Konzentration, bei denen schon nach kurzer Einwirkungsdauer dichte, guthaftende Fluoridschichten die Versuchsmetalle vor dem weiteren Angriff wirkungsvoll schützten, wurde die Inhibition des Angriffs von 0,1 n-HCL und 0,1 n-NaOH auf Rein-Al 99,9 durch Zusatz unterschiedlicher KF- bzw. KF·HF-bzw. (NH4) F.HF-Mengen im Standversuch überprüft. Während der Versuchs-Werkstoff in KF-Lösungen nicht, in KF.HF-Lösungen mäßig und in (NH4)F.HF-Lösungen stark angegriffen wird, beeinflussen KF-, KF.HF- oder (NH4)F.HF-Zusätze das Inlösunggehen von Al 99,9 in 0,1 n-HCL nicht. In 0,1 n-NaOH kommt es dagegen meist schon nach Zusatz geringer Fluoridmengen zu einer starken Inhibition des Angriffs, die unter günstigen Verhältnissen einer Hemmwirkung von 98% entspricht.

For these and other electro chemical problems an elchemographic design has been experienced. This apparatus allows a continuous photographic recording of potentials and currents under eligible modification of the conditions of polarization.Elchemographic measurements are based on electrode polarizations by means of discontinuous currents which can be modified over a wide range.Polarization by means of discontinuous current makes it possible to measure the electrode potential in the dead state. This is of great importance to the research of corrosion and passivity as well as of transient resistants which generate the Ohm voltage and the well known component of the potentials measured under polarization.The elchemographic measurements have been extended to capacitive systems. In this connection the influences of a capacity on polarization current and potential were investigated. The results can be used in connection with the theory of local cells. (Influence of a capacity between two equipotential areas.)
    Notes: Die an Metallen und deren Legierungen beobachteten Korrosions- und Passivitätserscheinungen kann man in bestimmten Fällen durch experimentell belegte elektrochemische Anschauungen treffend beschreiben und erklären. Hierbei und auch bei anderen elektrochemischen Geschehen, bewahrte sich eine elchemographische Vorrichtung, die eine kontinuierliche photographische Registrierung der Potential- und Stromwerte bei wählbaren Änderungen der Polarisationsbedingungen ermöglicht.Elchemographische Messungen basieren auf einer Elektrodenpolarisation mit unterbrochenem Strom von rechteckartigem Verlauf unter Bedingungen, die es gestatten, den Polarisationsstrom weitgehend zu ändem.Die Polarisation mit unterbrochenem Gleichstrom ermöglicht die Bestimmung des Elektrodenpotentials in stromlosem Zustand, das für Korrosions- und Passivitätserscheinungen grundlegende Bedeutung, ebenso wie die vorübergehenden Widerstände, welche die Ohmsche Spannung bedingen und die gewohnte Komponente der an polarisierten Elektroden gemessenen Potentialwerte darstellen.Die elchemographischen Messungen wurden auf kapazitative Systeme ausgedehunt, in diesem Zusammenhang wurde der Einfluß einer Kapazität auf Polarisationsstrom und Potential untersucht. Die Versuchsergebnisse kann man im Zusammenhang mit der Konzeption der Lokalelemente (Eingriff einer Kapazität zwischen zwei äquipotentialen Flächen) anwenden.

    Description / Table of Contents: Investigation of the Comparative Inhibiting Effect of Organic Compounds in Aqueous SolutionsTests were made to determine the protective effect of a number of organic compounds, of different types on the corrosion of steel sheet in aqueous solution. The rate of corrosion was estimated by weight loss. The effect of the concentrations and pH values of the solutions on the initiation of corrosion was also determined. It was found that the protective effect of alkaline compounds was determined by the minimum basicity of the solution. Acid compounds, tested in the form of their sodium salts, were protective if their dissociation constants lay within a certain range.
    Notes: Eine Reihe organischer Verbindungen aus verschiedenen Verbindungsklassen wurde auf die Schutzwirkung gegenüber der Korrosion von Eisenblech in wäßrigem Medium geprüft. Die Korrosionsgeschwindigkeit wurde durch Bestimmung des Gewichtsverlustes der Blechproben ermittelt. Ferner wurde die Abhängigkeit des Korrosionsbeginns von der Konzentration der zu untersuchenden Verbindung und vom pH-Wert ihrer Lösungen untersucht. Bei basischen Verbindungen war die Schutzwirkung im allgemeinen vom Überschreiten einer Mindestbasizität der Lösung abhängig. Bei sauren, in Form ihrer Natriumsalze untersuchten Verbindungen trat eine Schutzwirkung dann ein, wenn die Dissoziationskonstante innerhalb eines bestimmten Bereiches lag.

To avoid waterbags, channal and angle irons shall be arranged with their openings showing down. Acute angles and connections of lattice masts, tube bridges, and supports which cannot be cleaned easily are unsatisfactory for painting. You should prefer welded constructions to riveted ones, and tube constructions to those made of sectional iron. Horizontal surfaces are endangered by staying water, depositions of dust and soot, and mossy growth. Smoke gases should be kept off railway bridges by wooden shields. Riveted joints and slits must be sealed; bases of girders may not be set in concrete. Suspensors for scaffolds will help to reduce the costs of renovation. Stationnary cars on the underframe of bridges are very useful. Covered girders as well as overlapping joints, and nodal sheets must be painted before they are installed.Welded constructions have advantageously less starting points for rusting than riveted ones because rivet heads are very often the points of precocius rusting.
    Notes: Zu vermeiden sind unzugängliche Ecken und schmale Fugen. U-Eisen und Winkeleisen sollen mit der Öffnung nach unten angeordnet werden, um Wassersäcke zu vermeiden. Anstrichtechnisch mangelhaft sind auch spitze Winkel und schwer zu reinigende Anschlüsse bei Gittermasten, Rohrbrücken und Stützen. Geschweißte Konstruktionen sind den genieteten vorzuziehen, Rohrkonstruktionen solchen aus Profileisen. Nietstellen und Fugen sind gut zu verkitten, Trägerfüße sind zweckmäßig nicht einzubetonieren. Durch Aufhängevorrichtungen für die Rüstung kann der Erneuerungsanstrich verbilligt werden. Bei Brücken sind stationäre Wagen zur Befahrung der Unteransicht am Platze. Verdeckte Träger sowie sich überdeckende Laschen und Knotenbleche müssen den endgültigen Anstrich vor der Montage erhalten.Geschweißte Konstruktionen haben gegenüber genieteten den Vorteil, weniger Ansatzpunkte zur Rostbildung zu bieten, während im besonderen Nietköpfe häufig Ausgangspunkte vorzeitigen Rostens sind.

    Description / Table of Contents: Vibration Method to Detect Modifications in WoodThe authors investigated the influence of an impregnation by a synthetic resin or boric acid, a watering and the effects of alkali and mineral acids upon the torsional fatigue strength (modulus of elasticity in shear and logarithmic decrement) of numerous exotic hard and soft wood. While an impregnation makes the modulus of elasticity in shear raise watering and boric acid treatments diminish the logarithmic decrement but cause high torsional fatigue strength. The alkali resistance of numerous wood is generally much lower than their resistance to acids.
    Notes: Die Verfasser studierten den Einfluß einer Imprägnierung mit Kunstharz oder Borsäure, einer Wasserlagerung und der Einwirkung von Lauge und Mineralsäure auf die Torsionsschwingungsfestigkeit (Gleitmodul und logarithmisches Dekrement) zahlreicher exotischer Laub- und Nadelhölzer. Während Kunstharztränkung den Gleitmodul stark erhöht, erniedrigen Wasserlagerung und Borsäurebehandlung das logarithmische Dekrement und erhöhen die Torsionsschwingungsfestigkeit. Die Laugenbeständigkeit der verschiedenen Holzarten ist im allgemeinen erheblich geringer als deren Säurebeständigkeit.
