    Notes: The displacement equations of motion for elastodynamics in 3 space dimensions are approximated by difference equations using 2nd order centred finite differences in space and time. The stability criterion of the difference scheme without boundary conditions is taken to be that condition on the ratio of step sizes which prevents the growth of an arbitray disturbance, and it requures the ratio of time step size to the space grid size to be less than a certain function of the ratio of the shear wave speed to the compressional wave speed. For this ratio less than 0.5, the condition is more stringent than that obtained by a simple extension from the two-dimensional case.

    Notes: The accuracy of certain thick plate elements when used in the context of thin plate problems can be improved by the use of reduced integration of the stiffness matrices. A series of numerical experiments on five different quadrilateral thick plate elements demonstrates the use of reduced integration and indicates the main reason for its success. This is the relaxation of a constraint on the shear strains. It is shown that the performance of a nine-noded Lagrangian element is near optimal.

    Notes: A number of numerical methods for parabolic paritial differential equations are discussed, they all reduce a single partial differential equation to a system of ordinary differential equations by discretization in the space variable(s). The discretizations can be finite element approximations (Galerkin and collocation) or finite difference approximations (methods of lines). The performances of the different methods are compared when used in conjunction with a variable time-step ordinary differential equation integrator. Tables of results are given and the suitability of the discretizations is discussecd.

    Notes: A new family of conforming triangular plate bending elements, based on the Displacement Method of formulation, is developed in detail in Reference 9. The elements can be of any order n-4, and do not present excess nodal continuties at the corner nodes. For a given element, the assumed vertical displacement w consists of a polynomial expansion supplemented by three rational function. Polynomial completeness is of order n for even n, and of order n-1 for odd values of n. This family is proposed as a desirable alternative to refined triangular elements which incorporate all three curvatures as corner node variables,8 or require constraint equations to enforce inter-element compatibility,10 The purpose of this paper is to describe the quintic member of the family. The traditional difficulties associated with the discontinuous curvatures of the rational functions are solved in a straightforward fashion. The element has the same good accuracy as the other, well-known, quintic triangle, 3,4,8 and some additional advantages accruning from the simplicity of its nodal variables. A similar performance can be anticipated with the other members of the family.

    Notes: This paper deals with the numerical solution of linear differential equations of fourth order by finite differences. It points out significant (but usually overlooked) errors which result from the conventional method of imposing the boundary conditions in such problems. Revised finite difference formulas are derived which apply near the boundaries and which eliminate the above errors. Three commonly encountered boundary conditions ar econsidered. These correspond, in the terminology of beam analysis, to a clamped end, to a simply supported end and to a free end. The improvement in accuracy that can be achieved with the revised formulas is illustrated by two representative examples. The revised formulas are shown to reduce the overall error of the numerical solution by a factor of about five in a typical case.

    Notes: The conventional dynamic variational approach and finite element base functions lead to non-diagonal consistent mass matrics which are inappropriate for use with an explicit time integration scheme. In this work, it is shown that if orthogonal base function are used with a mixed variational formulation, then consistant diagonal mass matrices and corresponding sets of spatially discretized field equations are obtained. Although the approach is quite general, the theory is purposely illustrated by a detailed development for one set of base functions. Central difference time integration is incorporated for applications to one-dimensional wave propagation and to Euler-Bernoulli beams. Numerical examples are provided for elastic and elastic-plastic materials.

    Notes: A direct variational method has been considered for solving mixed boundary value problems for linear elliptical equations. The main idea of the method consists in searching the unknown solution in a class of functions satisfying the differential equation and some of the boundary conditions. The functional to be minimized may be expressed in terms of the boundary values of the unknown solution, and thus the dimension of the variational problem is reduced. Reduction of the functional defined on the domain to a functional on its boundary corresponds to the common in the elsaticity theory of application of Clapeyron's theorem for the transformation of functionals of minimum elastic potential energy and complementary work. The reduced problem may be solved by the Ritz direct method. Some examples from the elasticity and seepage theories have been given to demonstrate the effectiveness of the method. Among the problems that have been solved by the method we may mention the plane elastic problem for a crack in a strip, three-dimensional elastic problems for a plane rectangular crack in an infinite elastic medium and the problem of a rectangular die in sliding contact with an elastic half-space (numerical solutions exhibit correct asymptotic behaviour in the neighbourhood of corners of cracks or die), and the plane and axisymmetric seepage problems.

    Notes: A superposition method, in which analytical and finite element solutions are combined through the variational principle, is presented for determining the three-dimensional stress intensity factors of the through-wall crack. Cumbersome volume integral due to the singular terms at the crack tip is carried on by applying the least squares methods to the results obtained by the Legendre-Gauss quadrature. Several numerical calculations are made based on the present method, showing that the three-dimensional effects cannot be neglected especially for the cases of larger Poisson's raito. The comparison of the present method with the other finite element methods proposed for determining the three-dimensional stress intensity factors indicates that the former has the obvious superiority to the latters in respect to the numbers of elements and nodal points necessary to obtain reasonable results.

    Notes: The paper develops an efficient free-vibration analysis procedure of two-dimensional structures. This is achieved by employing a discretization technique based on a recently developed concept of finite dynamic elements, involving higher order dynamic correction terms in the associated stiffness and inertia matrices. A plane rectangular dynamic element is developed in detail. Numerical solution results of free-vibration analysis presented herein clearly indicate that these dynamic element combined with a suitable quadratic matrix eigenproblem solution technique effect a most economical and efficient solution for such an analysis when compared with the usual finite element method.

    Notes: An optimal steady-state control problem governed by an elliptic state equation is solved by several finite element methods. Finite element discretizations are applied to different variational formulations of the problem yielding accurate numerical results as compared with the given analytical solution. It is sated that, for minimum computational effort and high accuracy, ‘mixed’ finite elements requiring only C° continuity, and approximating the control and state functions simultaneously are better suited to similar ‘fourth order’ problems.

    Notes: The boundary-integral equation medthod is particularly well suited for solution of stress concentration and elastic fracture mechanics problems. The method was not previously applicable to anisotropic three dimensional problems because no efficient technique existed for calculation of the required point load solution for an infinite body. A technique has been developed to evaluate numerically the anisotropic point load soultions, and used to generate data bases for various materials. An intrpolation technique is used to evaluate the point load solutions efficiently within a higher order boundary-intgral equation code. The effectiveness of the technique is verified by solution of problems involving both uniaxial stress states and stress concentrations.

    Notes: The present paper describes a hybrid stress finite element formulation for geometrically non-linear analysis of thin shell structures. The element properties are derived from an incremental form of Hellinger-Reissner's variational principle in which all quantities are referred to the current configuration of the shell. From this multi-field variational principle, a hybrid stress finite element model is derived using standard matrix notation. Very simple flat triangular and quadrilateral elements are employed in the present study. The resulting non-linear equations are solved by applying the load in finite increments and restoring equilibrium by Newton-Raphson iteratioin. Numerical examples presented in the paper include complete snap-through buckling of cylindrical and spherical shells. It turns out that the present procedure is computationally efficient and accurate for non-linear shell problems of high complexity.

    Notes: A common method for numerically approximating two-point parabolic boundary value problems of the form ut = L[u]+f(u) defined of the semi-infinite strip S = [0, 1]×[0, ∞] is to first discretize the spatial operator in the differential equation and then solve for the time evolution. Such an approach typically involves solving a system of algebriaic equations at a sequence of time steps. In this paper we take a different approach and subdivide S into a collection of semi-infinite substrips Si = [xi, xi+1]×[0, ∞], and use blending function techniques to derive finite parameter functions ei(x, t) defined on Si. Spectral matching methods are used in deriving ei to ensure that (u - ei) can be made small on Si. Galerkin's method, with associated integration sover the entire space-time domain S, is then used to generate approximations to u(x, t) based upon the so defined infinite element (ei, Si). Approximations are hence found for all (x, t) in S by solving one well structed system of algebraic equations. We apply the method to several linear and non-linear problms.

    Notes: In this paper a technique previously developed for the analysis of rigid-plastic structural frames is adapted to provide a formal procedure for finding the limit load of any structure formed from rigid blocks. In this procedure the load factor is maximized subject to the euilibrium equations of the structure and linear constraints imposed by criteria of failure at the block interfaces.In part I of the paper it is assumed that the limiting shear force associated with sliding at a block interface is independent of the normal component of force across the interface. This assumption means that the normality rule is satisfied, so that the upper- and lower-bound theorems of classical limit analysis apply. This part includes a description of computer program for the collapse analysis of masonry arches with joints incapable of carrying tension.In part II the limit on the Shear force at a block interface is assumed to be that associated with Coulomb friction. It is not difficult to extend the computational algorithm described in part I to deal with this situation. However, the failure mechanism computed by the algorithm will not necessarily satisfy the normality rule. The corresponding limit load may therefore be an over-estimate of the true failure load, even though it is computed by a lower-bound (equilibrium) approach. A criterion is established for testing the validity of a failure load computed in these circumstances.

    Notes: The fluid forces acting on a uniform cylinder with an infinitely long axis, heaving in the free surface or an infinite ideal fluid, are described in terms of its ‘added mass’ and ‘damping coefficient’. The techniques of multipole expansion and multiparameter conformal transformation are adopted for such calculations and applied to shapes which cannot be adequately represented by the conventional, and more rudimentary, ‘Lewis form fit’. The shapes referred to are both relevant to ship bows, one being a ‘fine section’ and the other a ‘bulbous section’. The parameters which influence the accuracy of the solution are examined. Results for these two sections are computed and compared with results based on (a) the ‘Lewis form approximation’ and (b) the ‘Frank's close fit method’ which employs a singularity representation.

    Notes: The hydrodynamic mass matrix for a vibrating ship is evaluated using a three-dimensional finite element discretization of the surrounding water. For the important case of vertical vibrations of the ship, values of the added masses obtained in this way are compared with those given by the conventional semi-empirical formulas currently in use in the shipbuilding industry. A numerical example is presented. It is concluded that conventional two-dimensional methods, the usefulness of which is confirmed when the first few modes of the hull girder only are sought, do not apply to higher modes, for which significant deformation of the cross-section may occur. On the other hand, a finite element approach has the advantage of its generality as well as flexibility. Suggestions for future research are given.

    Notes: This paper is concerned with the development of transfer functions for the dynamic response of multidegree-of-freedom offshore structures, excited by sinusoidal waves. The problem is formulated in terms of the principal modes of the structure vibrating freely in vacuo. The hydrodynamic analysis is performed through use of a distribution of wave sources on the submerged surface of the structure, which leads to an approximate solution satisfying the boundary condition on the fluid-structure interface at a discrete set of points. Generalized forces are obtained corresponding both to excitation by waves and to the hydrodynamic reactions induced by motions of the structure: the latter are expressed in terms of added mass and damping matrices. Results are given for simple geometries to illustrate the approach.

    Notes: A method of fluid-structure connection is presented for solutions which mainly involve the calculation of the dynamic response of structures by using the method of modal analysis. This connection method is based upon finite element structural and fluid representation and is efficiently employed when used with the inverse iteration procedure for eigenvalue, eigenvector evaluation. The inverse iteration procedure is described in conjunction with the connection method. Also a method of non-linear structural analysis and a method of frequency domain analysis are discussed with reference to the presented fluid-structure connection procedure.Applications are considered for both model and prototype situations.     Notes: This paper presents a numerical technique for the linear dynamic analysis of a finite elastic structure immersed in an infinite homogeneous acoustic medium. It is required to determine the vibrational motion of the structure and also the associated acoustic field in the fluid, when the structure is either subjected to internal applied forces or is acting as a scatterer of an incident acoustic wave. A finite element analysis of the structure is matched at the structure-fluid interface with an integral equation representation of the exterior acoustic field, leading to a coupled system of equations which may be cast in either acoustic or structural from. The former approach is preferred here for which numerical results are presented when the method is applied to plane wave scattering by thick and thin elastic spherical shells.

    Notes: A finite element method is presented for predicting the coupled structural-acoustic response of a flexible cylinder, which contains an acoustic medium and is excited by mechanical forces.     Notes: This paper considers the problem of solving the optimality criteria equations for a truss structure. A unique Newton-Raphson method for optimizing redundant structures subject to multiple constrainsts on displacement and member sizes is presented. Both equality and inequality constraints are considered. The characteristics of this approach along with least squares and recursive techniques for the solution of the non-linear optimality criteria equations are examined numerically for several sample problems. This new formulation offers the advantages of a reduction in the number of dependent variables, ease of incorporation of various types of constraints, and very rapid convergence.

    Notes: The discretization of the media at all spatial co-ordinates but one is presented here. This partial discretization leads to continuous finite elements as opposed to fully discrete ones and the problem resolves, for the cases presented here, into a set of linear differential equations rather than algebraic equations. The general problem of first derivative functionals in elastostatics is considered and it is shown, in general, how the continuous finite elements required for the solution may be obtained. Plane states, axisymmetric and three-dimensional continuous elements are obtained to illustrate application to particular cases.Different methods of solution for the set of differential equations are discussed and it is shown that several existing and widely used finite element related techniques are particular cases of this local partial discretization. Three numerical examples are solved to demonstrate the good comparison obtained between the numerical and the exact solutions. The semi-infinite examples included also illustrate the treatment of these types of problems without the use of fictitious boundaries.

    Notes: Shape functions are given for a six node triangular element in which the √r displacement filed varies quadratically in the circumferential direction. Using a convenient co-ordinate system the stiffness development is sketched and the integrations re done exactly in the radial co-ordinate direction. Brief numerical results are presented. Shape functions for a 15 node three-dimensional element are given explicitly. The shape functions provide both constant strain capability and conformability with quadratic isoparametric elements.

    Notes: Numerical analysis of tsunamis applying the finite element method is presented based on the shallow water wave equation. To discretize time, a two step explicit method is used. The scheme is the extension of the Lax-Wendroff finite difference method. The present finite element method is used for the analysis of the Tokachi-oki Earthquake tsunami problem and compared with the tide gauge records. The conclusion of this paper is that the present method is suitable for the prediction of the tsunami wave propagation problem.

    Notes: A Procedure is presented for generating a class of conformal mappings useful in the formulation of finite-difference problems involving curved boundaries. The method provides a systematic approach that is capable, in principle, of reducing the geometry to a nearly-rectangular domain for a wide variety of partical problems. The introduction of sheared co-ordinates in this computational domain then provides for solution of the problem in a nearly-orthogonal (in fact, nearly-conformal) co-ordinate system, with its boundaries corresponding to co-ordinate lines. The method is based upon the Schwarz-Christoffel transformation and is quite simple to apply. Several examples illustrating the types of geometries which can be treated in this manner are presented.

    Notes: The paper presents a classification of mathematical commonly encountered in connection with solution of non-linear finite element problems. The principal methods for numerical solution of the non-linear equations are surveyed and discussed. Special emphasis is placed upon the description of an automatic load incrementation procedure with equilibrium iterations. It is shown how this algorithm can be adapted for solving problems involving instabilities, snap-through and snap-back. A simple scalar quantity denoted the current stiffness parameter is suggested; this parameter is used to characterize the overall behaviour of non-linear problems. It can also be used as a steering parameter in the solution process. The use of the present technique is illustrated by several examples.

    Notes: The Zienkiewicz three- and four-time level schemes as proposed for vibration problems1 and adapted for the numerical integration of the diffusion equation after finite element discretization. Conditions are found for A0 stability and the methods are studied for their representation of the solution of y1=-λy. Methods used by various authors for linear and non-linear parabolic problems are compared. For the three time-level scheme a Liniger exponential fit of e-λ0Δt with a larger value of λ0Δt and the fully implicit scheme give the most promising results. The four time-level scheme is so much less amenable to control as to make it unsuitable for these problems.

Numerical solutions are obtained using a gradiaent projection algorithm which incorporates conjugate directions of search. Further insight into the nature of the solutions and the computational process is ontained through an analysis of the linearized sailplane dynamics and the necessary conditions for optimality.     Notes: For the 12-node quadrilateral isoparametric elements, it is shown that the inverse square root singularity of the strain field at the crack tip can be obtained by the simple technique of collapsing the quadrilateral elements into triangular elements around the crack tip and placing the two side nodes of each side of the triangles at 1/9 and 4/9 of the length of the side from the tip. This is analogous to placing the mid-side nodes at quarter points in the vicinity of the crack tip for the quadratic isoparametric elements. The advantages of this method are that the displacement compatibility is satisfied throughout the region and that there is no need of special crack tip elements. The stress intensity factors can be accurately obtained by using general purpose programs having isoparametric elements such as NASTRAN.

    Notes: A theory is developed whereby acoustic and structural modes are coupled by means of geometrical distortions in a circular cylindrical shell filled with liqued.The prediction is that a circularly symmetric discrete frequency acoustic wave in the liquid will excite in the shell not only a circular symmetric ‘breathing mode’ (which would be the only one present in an undistorted shell) but also short wavelength flexural waves at the excitation frequency. It is possible, even for quite small distortions, for the displacement amplitude of some of these flexural waves to exceed that of the ‘breathing mode’.The results of calculations for a particular shell are shown to be consistent with experimental results.

    Notes: The seismic behaviour of an offshore pipeline, which may be totally or partially in contact with the sea-bed, is characterized by the confluence of structural dynamics, hydrodynamics and soil mechanics and also the possible dynamic interactions between these aspects. This paper contains a study dealing with the seismic response analysis of such a pipeline including pressure drag effects. A numerical analysis basesd on the assumption that the pipe behaves linearly elastically and that pipe deffection is elastoplastically related, without loss, to sea-bed resistance shows that pipe response in significantly attenuated by contact, as aspected, the amount of attenuation depending upon contact length and the parameters defining idealized sea-bed behaviour.

    Notes: Prestressed concrete members, because of the use of high strength materials and the efficient disposition of tensile forces, need considerably less material. This and other advantages, however, are offset by the high unit costs of materials and the associated specialized labour. Thus, it is important to make the most of the savings in materials through the application of optimum design procedure. Among the available optimization techniques, generalized geometric progamming (GGP) is ideally suited because the design equations of prestressed concrete members are expressible in the form of polynomials. Using the GGP, in this study, a set of minimum prestress force designs are obtained for various depths of one-way slab. From the data thus obtained a minimum cost design procedure is explained. Moreover, the need for supplementary non-prestressed reinforcement to obtain economical designs for depths of slab beyond a certain depth is also shown.

    Notes: The problem of optimal design of the shape of a free or internal boundary of a body is formulated by assuming the boundary shape is described by a set of prescribed shape functions and a set of shape parameters. The optimzation procedure is reduced to determination of these paramenters. For constant volume or material cost constraint, the optimality conditions are derived for the case of mean complicance design of elastic structures of a non-linear material. Some additional conditions for the global minimum of the mean compliance are proved. The most typical cases of boundary variations are discussed. The optimal shape problem is next formulated by means of the finite element method and the iterative solution algorithm is discussed by using the optimalitycriteria. Several simple numerical examples are included.

    Notes: The paper presents a finite element method for minimum weight design of structures with lower-bound constraints on the natural frequencies, and upper and lower bounds on the design variables.The design algorithm is essentially an iterative solution of the Kuhn-Tucker optimatility criterion. The three most important features of the algorithm are: (i) a-small number of design iterations are needed to reach optimal or near-optimal design, (ii) structural elements with a wide variety of size-stiffness may be used. The only significant restriction is the exclusion of curved beam and shell elements, (iii) the algorithm will for multiple as well as single frequency constraints.The design procedure is illustrated with three simple problems.

    Notes: The problem of the axial vibration of a cantilever beam is investigated both analytically and numerically. The mass distribution that minimizes the total mass for a given value of the frequency parameter β is determined using both the sequential ordinary gradient-restoration algorithm (SOGRA) and the modified quasilinearization algorithm (MQA). Concerning the minimum value of the mass, SOGRA leads to a solution precise to at least 4 significant digits and MQA leads to a solution precise to at least 6 significant digits.Comparison of the optimal beam (a variable-section beam) with a reference beam (a constant-section beam) shows that the weight reduction depends strongly on the frequency parameter β. This weight reduction is negligible for β → 0, is 11.3 per cent for β = 1, is 55.3 per cent for β = 1.4, and approaches 100 per cent for β → π/2.

    Notes: Structural optimization problems with constraints imposed on natural frequencies are studied, giving special attention to the inherent non-linearity of natural frequency constraints. Assuming that the system mass and stifiness matrices are expressed as linear functions of the design variables, it is shown that there are two sources of non-linearity for natural frequencies in such a design space. Furthermore, simple variable transformation does not alleviate these non-linearities as it does in the static response case. Recognizing the inherent non-linear characteristics of natural frequency constraints, a second order Taylor series approximation for each eigenvalue of the equations of motion is derived and applied successfully to improve stability and overall efficiency of the automated synthesis process.

    Notes: The method of optimality criterion and recursion precedure is employed for the design of braced and unbraced structural systems subject to various static and dynamic forces. The dynamic excitations can be applied forces, ground motions, or the equivalent seismic forces of the Uniform building Code (UBC). By using a sophisticated computer program developed, it has been found that: (1) for a set of given loads and constraints, the optimum braced system is lighter than an unbraced system, (2) the use of the natural period recommended by the code in the design yields lighter structure than that based on the period of eigensolution, (3) for seismic structural design, three to five fundamental modes are needed for adequate accuracy, and the P-Δ effect, due to vertical ground motion and the gravity load, must be considerded because it demands heavier structural design, (4) the code does not provide an adequate structural design as the actual earthquake response spectrum requires, and (5) the interaction of three-dimensional earthquake motions can significantly influence an optimum design and is currently under investigation.

    Notes: It is shown how existing methods based on optimality criteria can be generalized using a first order approximation for all the constraints. In this case, these methods can be presented as a particular case of mathematical programming methods that use a linear approximation of constraints expressed in the space of the inverse of the design variables. A mixed method is proposed that can present the main advantages of both classical methods.

    Notes: The approximation of normal derivatives along a curved boundary becomes a major difficulty in obtaining finite difference solutions for irregular regions. A number of authors (for-example, Allen,1 Fox,2 Greenspan3 and Parker and Ma4) have suggested various solutions to this problem. However, most of these suggested methods are fairly cumbersome to use since they require the use of different formulas for various combinations of mesh and boundary geometries. This note shows a different way to approximate a quite general boundary condition along curved boundaries. The method uses a uniformly spaced mesh, is simple, general, relatively easy to program and appears to give accurate results.

    Notes: In many systems it is known a priori, that some states are ony weakly coupled with others. If such systems are solved on parallel processor it is possible to partition the states in such a way that one set of states is assigned to one processor and the other set of weakly coupled states to another. Computations can then be done in parallel. Because of the weak coupling it may not be necessary for information from the two sets to be communicated to each other for many integration steps. This can result in significant cost savings. In this paper, a partitined Runge - Kutta scheme is formulated for use on weakly coupleld systems of ordinary differential equations. An error expression is derived which provides a means for predicting the number of step sizes over which the partitioned formulas can be used in terms of a prespecified error tolerance. Numerical examples are presented both to verify the error expressions and to compare solutions using partitioned and unpartitioned schemes.

    Notes: The diferential equations governing two-phase flow through a porous medium are derived and the space discretization is carried out by the Galerkin finite element method. An examination of the eigenvalues of the resulting system follows in order to decide on a suitable stability criterion to be satisfied by the time-stepping algorithm. A class of time-stepping schemes is introduced and their behaviour when applied to a specific problem is analyzed. The aim is to achieve an adequate modelling of the water-oil interface and to preserve reasonable values of the capillary pressure. A technique to clustering the mesh around the interface is used to improved the modelling, and a boundary condition based on the relative mobilities of the two fiuids is imposed to enable the program to calculate the water-oil ratio after breakthrough. The effect of lumping the mass matrix is then examined with a view to reducting the surge in the values obtained for the capillary pressure. Finally an optimum method is suggested for use as a starting algorithm for more sophisticated time-stepping schemes.

    Notes: A Finite Element formulation for the axisymmetrical analysis of rotational shells with geometric non-linearity is developed, using a mixed finite element model of a curved rotational shell type, the two global components of displacement (ur, uz) and the two stress couples (Mr, MtH) being the free and independent unknowns of the problem. The prescribed geometry at every nodal circle comprises the co-ordinates and meridional slope angle and curvature. Newton-Raphson Iteration is used in solving the non-linear system of equations. Circular plates and a spherical cap are used as examples to test the formulation; good results were achieved which are presented graphically in comparison to the analytical solution.
