    Notes: Abstract Seventy-three species of macroalgae from the Mexican Pacific, Atlantic and Caribbean coast were screened for ichtyotoxic activity. Ethanolic, acetonic and aqueous extracts were prepared and tested against the fish Carassius auratus. The extracts were classified on the basis of their effects as: toxic if the fish died in two hours or less; moderately toxic, if the organism behaved abnormally but death did notoccur, and non-toxic if the fish did not display any change. 79% species were ichtyotoxic to some degree. Extracts of 39 species were toxic, with at least one extract with lethal effects, 19 were moderately toxic and 15 species were non-toxic. Only the extracts ofDictyota bartayresiana, Dictyota cervicornis,Lobophora variegata, Bryothamnion triquetrum and Laurencia obtusa were toxic in all three solvents. The acetone and ethanol extracts were more active, and therefore are more suitable for extraction of toxic substances.

    Notes: Abstract Seaweed responses to eutrophication and their role in coastal eutrophication processes were compared at 8 different sites along the European coasts from the Baltic to the Mediterranean as part of the EU-ENVIRONMENT Project Marine Eutrophication and benthic Macrophytes (EUMAC). Structural and functional changes of marine benthic vegetation typical of eutrophic waters, in particular mass development (blooms) of certain seaweeds, are not merely the result of increased nutrient loading, but must be attributed to complex interactions of primary and secondary effects during the eutrophication process. Due to species-specific physiological properties of the algae (nutrient kinetics, growth potential, light, temperature requirements), the combined effects of abiotic and biotic factors on juvenile or adult developmental stages control the development of algal blooms in different ways. In particular the role of light, temperature, water motion and oxygen depletion, as well as of grazers, on early and adult developmental stages of the algae are considered. The result are discussed in the context of coastal eutrophication control and management.

    Notes: Abstract ‘Green tides’ Ulva is often harvested for environmental reasons, and put in a dump. Observations on degradation of Ulva in such dumps led us to consider recovery of hydrolysis juice in order to methanize this rather than the entire alga. The hydrolysis step was then studied in the laboratory and under real conditions. The decomposition of Ulva was rapid (7.1% C d−1), but its degradation incomplete (38% C remaining after 52 days). After 9 months in a dump, VFA contents in the flows were insignificant and N and C contents in the remaining material were due to the non-degradable fraction. Modifications of the physical or chemical conditions of hydrolysis didn't improve suffisently significantly the results to be used on a large scale. On the other hand, the techniques which could allow a rapid recovery of the juice improved together the recovery of the COD. The hydrolysis juice is a very good substrate for methanisation: the methane yield reached 330 L kg−1 VS, and the epuration rate 93%. The process combining the two steps, hydrolysis and juice methanisation, is one which offers a reasonable compromise between methane output, productivity of the system and treatment cost. However, there are still two problems, dependence on climatic conditions, and too low a recovery rate of the initial organic material.

    Notes: Abstract Isolation and characterisation of marine algal hemagglutinins or lectins are essential for their potential industrial application as specific carbohydrate affinity ligands. The phosphate buffer extract of the red alga, Gracilaria verrucosa (Huds.) Papenfuss (Gigartinales, Rhodophyta) from Japan is known to contain three different hemagglutinins. The extract of the alga collected in March 1993 from Kagawa Prefecture, Japan, was purified by ammonium sulphate fractionation, ion exchange and gel filtration chromatography. Using gel filtration, two peaks were obtained (hereafter Peak 1 and Peak 2) which differed in molecular size and hemagglutinating activity against horse erythrocytes. Peak 1 corresponded to the known high molecular weight hemagglutinin, H-GVH. Peak 2 contained large amounts of hexose and sulphate along with a small amount of protein. It had a low molecular weight (gel filtration) similar to that of two of the previously reported G.verrucosa hemagglutinins but differed in its electrophoretic behaviour. Peak 2 is therefore a fourth hemagglutinin. Its activity was not inhibited by any of the monosaccharides tested but by the complex glycoproteins such as asialofetuin and fetuin. It had no divalent cation requirement for hemagglutination. The properties of this novel hemagglutinin could prove useful in industrial applications.

    Notes: Abstract Bostrychia montagnei was submitted to aqueous extraction at 25 and 85 °C. The purified polysaccharide extracts represent ∼ 17% of the dried alga. Galactose is the principal monosaccharide component of these extracts (60.8–70.4 mol%). 3,6-Anhydrogalactose and its 2- O-methyl derivative are also present in smaller amounts (16.2–22.0 mol%), as well as other methylated sugars, such as 6- O- (6.5–7.8 mol%) and 2-O-methylgalactose (0.2–2.1 mol%). Xylose (4.1–8.1 mol%) and glucose (0.7–2.6 mol%) were also detected. The aqueous extracted polysaccharides (25 °C) were separated by anion-exchange chromatography into six sulphated galactan fractions with negative specific rotations and another two with high xylose contents and positive specific rotations. The sulphated galactans all have an agar type backbone modified by partial O-methyl substitution on O-6 or O-2 of the galactosyl units. The latter substitution is also present in varying degrees of 3,6-anhydrogalactose.

    Notes: Abstract The data for worldwide seaweed production for the years 1994/1995 are summarised. At least 221 species of seaweed were used, with145 species for food and 101 species for phycocolloid production. 2,005,459 t dry weight was produced, with 90% coming from China, France, UK, Korea, Japan and Chile. 1,033,650 t dry weight was cultured with 90% coming from China, Korea and Japan. Just four genera made up 93% of the cultured seaweed: Laminaria (682,581 t dry wt), Porphyra (130,614 t dry wt), Undaria (101,708 t dry wt) and Gracilaria (50,165 t dry wt). The value of the harvest was in excess of US $ 6.2 billion. Since 1984 the production of seaweeds worldwide has grown by 119%.

    Notes: Abstract A structural study was carried out on a fucoidan isolated from the brown seaweed Cladosiphon okamuranus. The polysaccharide contained fucose, glucuronic acid and sulfate in a molar ratio of about 6.1 : 1.0 : 2.9. The results of Smith degradation showed that this polysaccharide has a linear backbone of 1→3-linked α-fucopyranose with a half sulfate substitution at the 4-positions, and a portion of the fucose residues was O-acetylated. The data obtained from partial acid hydrolysis, a methylation analysis and NMR spectra indicated that the α-glucuronic acid residue is linked to the 2-positions of the fucose residues, which were not substituted by a sulfate group. These results indicated that the average structure of this fucoidan is as follows: -[(→3Fuc-4(±OSO3-)α1−)5→3[GlcAα1→2]Fucα1−]n−. (Half of each fucose residue was sulfated. One O-acetyl ester was present in every 6 fucose residues.)

    Notes: Abstract A hypothesis of phylogenetic relationships inferred from analysis of plastid-encoded rbcL sequences is presented for members of the Solieriaceae, an economically important family containing carrageenan-type phycocolloids. Previous studies established that the Solieriaceae sensu lato forms a terminal clade in the Solieriaceae complex, a cluster of families sister to the Gigartinaceae complex (Gigartinaceae and Phyllophoraceae). The family Solieriaceae (including the Areschougiaceae) presently contains about 20 genera that are widely distributed in warm-temperate and tropical waters throughout the world. Molecular rbcL and published morphological evidence are consistent with an Australasian origin for the family and a Tethyan distribution for its tropical representatives from west to east as far as the Pacific coast of North and South America. The austral lineages (Callophycus, Rhabdonia, Areschougia and Erythroclonium) are resolved at the base of the tree. The remaining genera , comprising the tropical and subtropical cluster, form a robust terminal clade (100% bootstrap support). This assemblage can be divided into seven groups, most of which receive strong bootstrap support: (1) Sarconema, (2) a Eucheuma group, (3) an Atlantic Solieria group, (4) an Indo-Pacific Solieria robusta group, (5) a Meristiella/Meristotheca group, (6) Agardhiella and (7) a Sarcodiotheca group that includes 'Eucheuma' uncinatum from the Gulf of California. Four clusters of species are recognized in the Eucheuma group that correspond to the sections: Eucheuma, Gelatiformia (= Betaphycus), Anaxiferae, and Cottoniformia (= Kappaphycus) proposed by Maxwell Doty. No decision is reached regarding the taxonomic rank appropriate to the eucheumoid taxa.

    Notes: Abstract Undaria pinnatifida (Harvey) Suringar is currently divided into two morphological forms, f. typica Yendo. and f. distans Miyabe & Okamura. The objective of this study was to determine the effects of seasonal variation in growth rate on the morphology of U. pinnatifida, and to define the form of U. pinnatifida growing in Otago Harbour, New Zealand. Morphological variables (stipe length, blade length, blade width, sporophyll length and degree of blade incision), growth rates (frond, blade and stipe) and blade erosion were measured each month from August 1993 to February 1995, and compared using correspondence analysis. Variation in the morphology of U. pinnatifida was largely accounted for by varying growth rates. Definition of the form of U. pinnatifida growing in Otago Harbour is equivocal because morphological characteristics of both f. typica and f. distans were exhibited at different times of the year.

    Notes: Abstract In 1988, the New Zealand government instituted a moratorium on the issue of licenses to harvest wild stocks of marine macroalgae. In the intervening years, exports of algal products from New Zealand have declined while imports have increased. Exports of agar have decreased by 85%. For algal food products, exports have decreased while imports have increased by 500%. Collection of unattached rhodophytes requires no permit, and some special exemptions to the permit moratorium were made for abalone farmers, so seaweed continues to be harvested from wild stocks. In 1997, the two main rhodophyte genera harvested were Pterocladia and Gracilaria, with approximately 60 and 100 t dry weight harvested respectively. The two main phaeophyte genera harvested were Macrocystis and Durvillaea, with 51.8 and 34.5 t (wet weight) harvested respectively. Algal farming in New Zealand is still in its infancy; while there are 72 farms licensed to grow seaweed (owned by 29 different ent ities), only 12 of these are actively producing algae. Approximately 6 t (wet weight) was cultured in 1995, and the majority was used as feedstock for animals cultured at the same sites.

    Notes: Abstract The agaran yield, 3,6-anhydrogalactopyranose (3,6-AG) and sulphate content were compared in four commercial species of Gracilaria grown under parallel conditions in vitro. Gracilaria chilensis Bird, McLachlan et Oliveira from Chile provided the highest agaran yield (59%), followed by G. tenuistipitata Zhang et Xia var. liui Zhang et Xia from China (53%), Gracilaria gracilis (Stackhouse) Steentoft, Irvine et Farnham from Namibia (34%) and from Argentina (26%), and Gracilaria caudata J. Agardh from Brazil (32%). The algae from Chile, China and Namibia gave higher yields after alkali treatment while those from Brazil and Argentina gave higher yields for the native agarans. Lower percentages of 3,6-AG and higher sulphate contents were found in the species from warmer waters (Brazil and China), indicating agarans of lower commercial value. The results indicate that the Chilean Gracilaria had a superior yield of agaran, although G. gracilis from Arg entina presented the highest 3,6-AG content after alkali treatment compared to other species considered for commercial cultivation in Brazil.

    Notes: Abstract A spectrophotometric quantification method was optimized to evaluate its utility in seaweed tissue viability tests using the enzymatic reduction of colorless 2,3,5-triphenyltetrazolium chloride (TTC) to a colored triphenylformazan (TPF). To allow accurate determination of TPF in the seaweed Porphyra thallus and conchocelis, 0.2 g of tissues are incubated with 4 mL of 0.8% TTC reagent in the dark at 20°C for 1 h under a mineral oil layer. The TPF formed in tissues was extracted for 15 min at 60°C with 2 mL of 0.2 N KOH in 25% ethanol. Then TPF is partitioned away by prompt addition of hexane and vortexing. By this procedure, we have observed nearly complete separation of TPF, and observed good spectrophotometric discrimination between TPF and other hexane-soluble pigments at 545 nm. This procedure has proved applicable to a wide range of seaweed taxa; 1 species of Chlorophyta, 4 species of Phaeophyta and 7 species of Rhodophyta tested.

    Notes: Abstract In the laboratory, ammonium and nitrate uptakes were measured for juvenile Laminaria saccharina (L.) Lamour. and Nereocystis luetkeana (Mert.) Post. et Rupr. originating from a salmon sea cage farm in northwestern British Columbia, Canada. The effect of various concentrations of NH4+ and NO3-, which are typical of salmon farming environments, on uptakes values were examined. Both L. saccharina and Nereocystis revealed simultaneous uptake of NH4+ and NO3- when both NH4+ and NO3- were present in the medium. During a 3-h incubation, mean uptake rates of NH4+ and NO3- by L. saccharina ranged from 6.0–8.9 and 4.6–10.6 μmol gdw-1 h-1, respectively, and by Nereocystis, they ranged from 6.6–9.3 μmol gdw-1 h-1 and 6.1–17.0 μmol gdw-1 h-1, respectively. The highest uptake rates (14.8 μmol NH4+ gdw-1 h-1by L. saccharina and 27.2 μmol NO3- gdw-1 h-1 by Nereocystis) occurred at the highest concentration (40 μM NH4+ plus 30 μM NO3-) during a 1 h incubation. Nitrate uptake by both L. saccharina and Nereocystis increased linearly up to the highest nitrate level tested (30 μM), whereas uptake rates of ammonium were stable beyond 10 μM NH4+ to reach approximately 10 and 13 μmol gdw-1 h-1, respectively, for L. saccharina and Nereocystis. Unlike L. saccharina, Nereocystis showed a significant preference for NO3- when more than 20 μM NO3- was present in the medium ( p 〈0.05). Both L. saccharina and Nereocystis would be suitable for integrated cultivation of salmon/kelp.

    Notes: Abstract The effects that different intensities of frond harvesting have on frond regeneration and subsequent production of reproductive structures were investigated for the red intertidal alga Mazzaella cornucopiae (Postels & Ruprecht) Hommersand from British Columbia, Canada. Harvesting was done by pruning fronds in the late spring (when stand biomass is highest) of 1993 at two intensities: total and partial collection of fronds, in this second case leaving all frond biomass less than 1 cm high in place. Holdfasts were not damaged. Total percent cover of thalli, frond density, mean frond length, and stand biomass for these experimental quadrats were statistically similar to values for control quadrats in the spring of 1994. These results suggest that one total harvest of fronds per year, done in late spring without damaging holdfasts, may give the highest sustainable yield of biomass. The effects of harvesting intensity on reproduction were variable and difficult to explain. Neither the appearance nor the abundance of cystocarpic fronds were affected by frond pruning, compared with control areas, but pruning did affect the appearance and the abundance of tetrasporic fronds. Partial pruning resulted in a longer presence of tetrasporic fronds, whereas total pruning was associated with their complete absence. Results are compared with those for the few other species of the Gigartinaceae for which experimental harvesting has been done.

    Notes: Abstract The polyphenols present in brown seaweed tissue may seriously affect aerobic microbial degradation, particularly the alginate present. Laminaria hyperborea stipes, harvested at 59 °N off the Norwegian coast in autumn, were degraded at different levels of polyphenols in aerated batch reactors at 35 °C and pH 7. This was achieved by manipulating the relative amounts of peripheral tissue, by removing or adding the mechanically peeled outer phenolic layer, using standardized inocula already adapted to L. hyperborea degradation. The degradation of organic matter was clearly depressed by increasing the amount of peripheral tissue. Alginate lyase activity was also negatively correlated to the amount of peripheral tissue loaded, presumably due to the release of reactive polyphenols. The total digestion rates of alginate were reduced by more than a factor of two at enhanced amounts of peripheral tissue. The guluronic content of extracted Na-alginate increased during the degradation, despite the presence of significant amounts of guluronate specific alginate lyase activity.

    Notes: Abstract Ulva often represents the main component of mass algal growths, and its composition and degradability make it a relatively good methanisation substrate. In ‘green tides’ Ulva sp. from Brittany, the low content oflignin-type components (polyphloroglucinols: 1.3% dry weight), and the large hemicellulosic fraction (9% dry weight) favour the substrate's accessibility to enzymes. Anaerobic degradation with a batch orcompletely stirred system is technically possible. However, the methane yield reached only 0.20 m3 kg−1 volatile solids and the epuration rate 50% volatile solids in experiments in batch or completely stirred reactors. More generally, methanisation comes up against various practical obstacles: seasonal growth of Ulva, low density of alga in suspension for loading the digester, high S concentration leading to the production of a biogas with a high H2S content, and, finally, the existence of a refractory or slowly degradable part, which requires a compromise between productivity and biological yield.

    Notes: Abstract The inhibition of lipid peroxidation and radical scavenging effects were studied to evaluate the antioxidant activity for extracts of 17 species of seaweed. The antioxidant effect was evaluated by determination of lipoxygenase activity and by α, α-diphenyl-β-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) decolorization. Lipoxygenase activity was depressed in the presence of aqueous and ethanol extracts of 4 algal species; Sargassum species had the highest antioxidant activity of all the species examined. The ethanol extracts of one Sargassum species showed competitive inhibition with the substrate. The same species also showed radical scavenging activity in the DPPH decolorization test. Comparison of these results shows no relationship between enzyme inhibition and radical scavenging activity.

    Notes: Abstract Polyphenols and divalent metal ions present in the tissue may seriously affect the degradation of alginate during anaerobic digestion of brown seaweeds. Laminaria hyperborea stipes, harvested at 59 °N off the Norwegian coast in the autumn, were degraded at different concentrations of polyphenols in anaerobic batch reactors at 35 °C and pH 7. This was done by removing or adding the mechanically peeled outer phenolic layer of the algae, and using methanogenic and alginate degrading inocula already adapted to L. hyperborea degradation. Initial alginate released from the algal particles was affected by NaOH titrations because the Ca/Na-ratio was reduced. After a rapid consumption of the mannitol, alginate lyases were induced, and guluronate lyases showed the highest extracellular activity. Then the microbes digested 0.12–0.23 g Na-alginate L−1 h−1. Later the degradation rate of alginates declined almost to zero, and 13–50% of the alginate remained insoluble. The total solubilisation of alginates was apparently limited by both Ca-crosslinked guluronate residues and complexation with compounds such as polyphenols. The methane production had a lag phase that increased at higher amounts of soluble polyphenols, and the total fermentation probably also became product inhibited if soluble compounds such as acetate, ethanol and butyrate were accumulated.

    Notes: Abstract Fresh and dry specimens of Sargassum polycystum and Laurencia obtusa were collected from the Seribu Islands waters, Indonesia, and crude methanol, diethylether and hexane extracts were tested for antioxidant activity using the thiocyanate method. None of the extracts of dry S. polycystum and L. obtusa showed antioxidant activity, but extracts of fresh material did show activity. L. obtusa extracts had higher antioxidant activity than those of S. polycystum. The methanol extract of S. polycystum was more active than the other extracts, and the n-hexane extract of L. obtusa was more active than the diethylether and methanol extracts.

    Notes: Abstract Callus and blade formation of the seaweed Hizikia fusiformis depended on the gelling agents used under axenic culture conditions. Excised cylindrical pieces (5 mm) of the hold fast were cultured on seven different gelling agents in seawater with added Provasoli's enrichment (PESI), at 40 µmol m−2 s−1 light intensity, 18 −C for 1 month. The highest percent of callus formation (47%), from holdfast pieces, was produced on solid medium composed of 2.0% high gel strength agar. No callus was formed in liquid medium. Blades, from holdfast pieces, were formed in PESI liquid medium at the rate of 45%, while the high level of axenic blade formation (30%) on solid support was observed on 0.5% high gel strength agar. Callus and blade were identified with the original strain, at the DNA level, using random amplified polymorphic DNAs.

    Notes: Abstract Seasonal variation in densities of mobile epifauna associated with three species of subtidal brown seaweeds (Phaeophyta) was investigated over 2–3 years in northeastern New Zealand. There was strong seasonal variation in the total number of individuals per plant wet weight for epifauna inhabiting two fucalean seaweeds of the genus Carpophyllum, with epifaunal densities roughly tracking solar irradiance. In contrast, epifaunal densities on the laminarian Ecklonia radiata peaked during autumn/winter in the first two years of sampling, and during spring in the third, showing no predictable seasonal pattern of abundance. Few individual epifaunal taxa showed clear seasonal abundance patterns, even on the Carpophyllum spp. The composition of the epifaunal assemblage on each seaweed species was fairly constant over time.

    Notes: Roothaan-Hartree-Fock (RHF) calculations are carried out for the ground states of the atoms from helium to xenon using a minimal basis set of Slater-type functions whose principal quantum numbers are allowed to take variationally optimal noninteger values. The resulting energies are substantially superior to those obtained previously under the usual restriction that principal quantum numbers be positive integers. The energy lowering relative to the single-zeta wave functions of Clementi and co-workers ranges from 0.0066 Eh in He to 11.2 Eh in Xe. Our results are superior to those obtained by Höjer using a minimal basis set of unconventional binomially screened basis functions. Noninteger principal quantum numbers benefit d-orbitals the most; physically realistic negative d-orbital energies are obtained in all cases including those transition-metal atoms for which a conventional single-zeta STF basis leads to positive d-orbital energies. © 1997 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

    Notes: An ab initio study on the reaction of the ground state (3D) and the excited state (1D) of Sc+ with methane was performed. Reaction channels on the singlet and triplet potential surface (PES) and the reaction mechanism are examined and discussed. Three regions of the potential surface was studied: the molecular complex, the C(SINGLE BOND)H insertion products, and the transition states for the reaction. Comparisons between singlet and triplet PESs show that the excited state (1D) of Sc+ has more reactivity with methane than does the ground state (3D) due to the spin quantum number conservation with the more stable insertion intermediate. © 1997 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

    Notes: The importance of the hybridization displacement charge (HDC) in describing molecular electrostatic potential (MEP) maps was demonstrated by studying six molecules; pyrazine N-oxide, para-nitropyridine, 5-nitropyrimidine, 3-nitropyridazine, N2, and N2O. It is shown that continuously distributed HDC-corrected Löwdin charges reproduce the MEP features of these molecules, most of which have competing electrophilic sites, in agreement with ab initio results. Further, it is found that for homonuclear diatomic molecules MEP minima can be located properly using HDC-corrected Löwdin (or HDC-corrected Mulliken) continuously distributed charges, but these features cannot be obtained using the conventional Löwdin (or Mulliken) charges. It was shown that the order of molecular electric field (MEF) values near the different electrophilic sites becomes changed when one moves away from the molecules. Thus, pyridine-type nitrogen atoms are the preferred binding sites close to the molecules, while at large distances, effects of oxygen atoms of the NO groups become dominant. © 1997 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

    Notes: Some types of atomic vibrations in a chain of the DNA type constructed of G-C pairs were studied. These are the atomic vibrations of the lateral groups of guanine and N(3)H(1)H(2) of cytosine connected by the hydrogen bond h-b-1 and the vibrations of the centers of masses of bases in the direction parallel to bonds h-b-i, i = 1-3. The vibrations mix partially due to the dependence of the energy of the bond h-b-1 on its length and split into two bands because of the interaction between neighboring base pairs. It was shown that the excitation of the bond h-b-1 results in the splitting off of the two local vibrations and in a small deformation of the chain in the vicinity of the pair with the localized hydrogen bond. The law of the dispersion of band vibrations, values of the split-off frequencies, and degree of poly(dG)-poly(dC) chain deformation were determined. © 1997 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

    Notes: Simple molecular orbital calculations are employed in searching electronic parameters which may characterize the chemical carcinogens. Using frontier orbitals, the carcinogen-DNA bond formation is described as an electron transfer from the highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO) of DNA to the lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (LUMO) of the carcinogen. Analysis of the DNA bases units shows that the electron donation occurs preferentially at the guanine site. The calculated low LUMO energy of several carcinogens indicate correctly the electrophilic character of these compounds. The difference between the carcinogen and the ultimate carcinogen is analyzed. Epoxides, free radicals, alkylating agents, and other metabolite forms are studied. A reasonable correlation is found between the LUMO energy and the carcinogenic function. © 1997 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

    Notes: The Gaussian expansions of the generalized relativistic effective core potential (GRECP) components are reported for elements Hg through Rn. The accuracy of the analytical GRECPs is estimated by calculations of atomic transition energies with the numerical one-configurational wave functions in comparison with Dirac-Fock calculations. The results of the corresponding calculations with the RECPs of other groups are also given. An “averaged error” in the reproduction of the transition energies without the change of the occupation number of the 5d-shell is an order of magnitude smaller than that for the RECPs of other groups. As is demonstrated for the transitions with the change of the occupation number of the 5d-shell in mercury, the largest absolute error of the GRECP is only 1.5-2 times smaller than that of the energy-adjusted pseudopotential (PP) or the RECP of Ross et al. with the same space of explicitly treated electrons. However, the dispersion of these errors is 19⋅10-4 au for the energy-adjusted PP, 35⋅10-4 au for the RECP of Ross et al. and only 4⋅10-4 au for the GRECP. One-configurational spin-averaged calculations of the molecular properties for HgH and HgH+ are carried out and compared with the corresponding results of Häussermann et al.   © 1997 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.     Notes: The H2 interaction with the Pd dimer and trimer were studied using multiconfigurational self-consistent field (MC-SCF) calculations with the relativistic effective core potential (RECP); the correlation energy correction was included in the extended multireference configuration interaction (MRCI), variational and perturbative to second order. Here, we considered the Pd2 first six states: 3Σ+u, 1Σ+g, 3Πg, 3Δxy, 1Σ+u, and 3Σ+g. For them, the four geometrical approaches included were the side-on H2 toward Pd2, for the hydrogen molecule in and out the Pd dimer plane; the perpendicular end-on H2 toward Pd2; and the perpendicular end-on Pd2 to H2. The Pd2 ground state is 3Σ+u, which only captures H2 in the C2v end-on approach, softly relaxing the H(SINGLE BOND)H bond. The closed-shell 1Σ+g captures the H2 molecule in all the approaches considered: The side-on approach of this state presents deep wells and relaxes the H(SINGLE BOND)H bond, and the end-on approach captures H2 with a relatively longer H(SINGLE BOND)H distance and also a deep well. The 3Πg state was the only one which did not capture H2. For the triangular Pd3 clusters, H2 was approached in the C2v symmetry in and out of the Pd3 plane. In the triangular case, H2 was absorbed in both spin states, with deep wells and relaxing the H(SINGLE BOND)H distance. The linear Pd3 singlet and triplet states capture outside of the Pd3 and break the H(SINGLE BOND)H bond. © 1997 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

    Notes: We presented a calculation of the total and partial decay widths of vibrational predissociation (VP) of the HeI2 molecule for low initial vibrational excitations from the lowest van der Waals (vdW) state with total angular momentum J = 0. A time-dependent golden rule wave-packet method was employed in our numerical calculations for the decay widths. The computed total decay widths, lifetimes, and rates of VP are in fairly good agreement with those extrapolated from the experimental data available. Predicted total decay widths as a function of initial vibrational levels exhibit a highly nonlinear behavior. These results demonstrate that a quantum mechanical decay mode for low vibrational excitation remains as well. The total propagation time needed in the time-dependent golden rule wave-packet calculations is much shorter than is the lifetime of the predissociation of HeI2. It is shown that the final-state interaction between the fragments is important for determining the final rotational-state distribution (partial decay width). We find that the major peak position in the final rotational-state distribution shifts to lower rotational energy levels with increase of the initial vibrational quantum number, which is evidently different from that for higher vibrational levels. This fact can be clearly explained by the dependence of the amount of kinetic energy released to the product degrees of freedom on the initial vibrational state. © 1997 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

    Notes: An extension to the theory of Schrödinger equations has been made which enables the derivation of eigenvalues from a consideration of a very small part of geometric space. The concomitant unwanted continuum effects have been removed. The theory enables very convergent or “superconvergent” calculations. In the case of the helium ground state, E=-2.90372437703411987 Eh was obtained from 251 terms. The result is comparable to that from the largest variation calculations so far carried out reinforced by extrapolation techniques. The theory is extensible to atoms and molecules irrespectively of the number of electrons or nuclear centers.     Notes: We calculate the resonant and antibound state energies for a Morse potential with a centrifugal barrier using Siegert boundary conditions. Starting with a complex wave number k (purely imaginary for bound and antibound states), we integrate numerically from the origin up to a matching point using Numerov's method. The inward integration is performed using the corresponding (first-order) Riccati equation. The complex eigenvalues are found by matching the two logarithmic derivatives. We find narrow shape resonances within the well, above the dissociation limit, and broad resonances above the centrifugal barrier.     Notes: Numerical experiments with a nonlinear (λχ4) oscillator which has its harmonic frequency changing randomly with time reveal certain interesting features of its dynamics of quantum evolution. When λ = 0, the level populations are seen to oscillate. But, as the nonlinear coupling is switched on (λ 〉 0), a threshold is reached at λ = λc when the evolution is seen to be characterized by an abrupt transition dominantly to the highest available state of the unperturbed (initial) oscillator. It is shown that this transition probability is maximized at a particular value of λ. The time threshold for this transition decreases with increasing nonlinear coupling strength. The numerically obtained structures of the underlying quantum-phase spaces of the linear and nonlinear random oscillators are examined. Possible use of these results in a problem of chemical origin is explored. © 1997 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

    Notes: Testosterone (17β-hydroxy-4-androsten-3-one) was studied by the semiempirical AM1 and PM3 and ab initio STO-3G*, 3-21G*, and 6-31G* methods. The goals were to compare those methods and to know the electronic structure of the hormone. Full geometry optimization was performed, and two crystal conformers (T1 and T2), and experimental dipole moment in solution were used for comparison. One conformer with a dipole moment similar to the solvated conditions was generated. Total energy, entalphies, dipole moments, charges, electrostatic potentials, and highest occupied molecular orbitals (HOMO) and lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (LUMO) were calculated. Root-mean-square (RMS) index of the theoretical molecules against T1 and T2 showed best results with the 3-21G* and 6-31G* methods, while AM1 gave better energies than PM3. Dipole moments were directed toward the OH group and the botton face of the A ring. The frontier orbitals were located along the C4-C5 π bond, particularly the LUMO was split between C4 and C5, predicting the action of enzymes at C5 yielding to 5α and 5β-reduced androgens. Electrostatic potentials might be also of biological importance since they are coincidental with the dipole-moment orientation. Finally, it is interesting that the solvatedlike conformer, its properties, and the OH group laid between the same group of T1 and T2 and with a total energy between the crystals and the gas phase or in vacuo conditions. This results might also explain the biology of testosterone and use them to model the hormone-receptor interaction. © 1997 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

    Notes: Restricted geometry optimizations at the ab initio SCF level with the 3-21G basis set were employed to investigate the conformation space of flavone acetic acid (FAA) and its related compounds. All the conformations are produced from a conformation which is, according to our previous work, probably the active conformation in terms of antitumor activity shown by these compounds. Detailed studies on FAA were carried out while only brief discussions are made on the analogs. The main results obtained are that (1) FAA is a very flexible molecule, e.g., with the energy barrier up to about 3 kcal mol-1 from the reference conformation, the important torsional angle τ1 can change from 27.0° to 117.0°, τ2 from -168.0° to 2.0°, and τ3 from -50.0° to 30.0°; (2) the hydrogen-bonding effect plays an important role in determining lower-energy conformations; (3) among all the FAA conformations considered, some are active and some are inactive; (4) it seems that the analogs will have similar behavior to FAA when the torsional angle τ3 is restricted to the values which are around the equilibrium values; and (5) the hypothesis put forward previously has been further developed in this work. Now, we postulate that efficient charge transfers will lower the energy and that proper charge transfers will activate the molecule. There are mainly two different types of charge transfer corresponding to two different types of conformation, which are specified in this article. © 1997 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

For the first stage, molecular dynamics calculations for the (HF)2 · Ar62 heterocluster are performed with the help of model potentials HF(SINGLE BOND)HF, Ar(SINGLE BOND)Ar, and Ar(SINGLE BOND)HF. Then, ab initio quantum chemistry analysis is carried out for the smaller systems (HF)2 · Ar15 and (HF)2 · Ar6 when keeping the argon atoms closest to the trapped dimer. We conclude that the hydrogen-bonded complex (HF)2 gains some extra stability inside the argon shells, originating primarily from a decrease of intermolecular distance RFF. Electronic structure calculations are in accord with the changes in dynamical properties, namely, a noticeable increase in the vibrational frequency assigned to the F(SINGLE BOND)F stretching mode (+25 cm-1) and decrease in rms deviations for the corresponding coordinate δFF. In addition to these changes, the argon atoms of the nearest solvent shell donate a small fraction of electron charge which is spent for an increase of population of the antibonding orbital σ*Hf(SINGLE BOND)Ff of the free monomer unit and shift orbital energies primarily of the lone-pair fluorine species. These shifts are greater than the changes due to geometry alterations and the possible inaccuracies of the calculation scheme. © 1997 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

    Notes: An efficient expansion method for the evaluation of VB matrix elements is introduced. The overlaps of VB wave functions of N electrons can be treated as algebrants, i.e., generalized determinants, of N × N matrices. An algebrant can be expanded with subalgebrants of lower orders in a successive way. By choosing Rumer spin bases and appropriately arranging the expansion, it is found that the number of unique subalgebrants involved in the expansion increases in a quite moderate way with N. In contrast to the traditional symmetric group approach, which explicitly utilizes all N! representation matrices, the new strategy incorporates the group theoretical factors in a simple way in the successive expansion.     Notes: The mechanism and kinetics for the decomposition of β-hydroxypropaldehyde, primary and secondary β-hydroxyketones, were studied by using ab initio RHF/6-31G and RHF/6-31G* methods. The activation barriers of these reactions were refined to be 39.57, 40.10, and 36.80 kcal mol-1 at the MP2/ /RHF/6-31G* level, respectively. The calculated results show that each decomposition is a concerted process with hydrogen transferring and bond breaking via a six-membered cyclic transition state. The thermal rate constants of the decomposition of primary and secondary β-hydroxyketones were obtained by calculating microcanonical probability fluxes through each transition state. It is theoretically confirmed that methyl substitution at the hydroxyl carbon of β-hydroxyketones causes a small enhancement in rates. The theoretical investigations of the mechanism and the rate constants are in agreement with the experimental results. © 1997 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

As a result, the series whose limiting values when the variable goes to  +∞ should correspond to the two-electron atom energies now have rational coefficients. This generalization allows one also to compute the series for the case of singlet S symmetry, a case which could not be considered in the previous original formulation of the method. Series with rational coefficients for the helium singlet and triplet S ground-state energy are calculated up to order 41 and 45, respectively. Moreover, symbolic computations also allow one to give the first few coefficients of these series for arbitrary values of the nuclear charge Z.     Notes: A few simple atom-transfer reactions (i.e., Ȧ+X-A→A-X+Ȧ) are studied by quantum mechanical ab initio methods. Emphasis is given to the detailed analysis of density matrices rather than to the energetics. Results reveal that during these reactions a small free valence always develops on the migrating atom at the transition state. The barriers in these reactions arise from the greater extent of bond cleavage in the reactant than that of bond formation in the transition state. Analysis of bond orders estimated from bond lengths using Pauling's relation also leads to the fact that the bond-cleavage process is more advanced than is the bond-formation process in these reactions.   © 1997 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.     Notes: Abstract The mechanical properties of various differentiated regions of thePorphyra perforata thallus and the effect of LiCl were studied by performing compression and tension tests. Among the various differentiated tissues, the holdfast area was high in its ‘compressive modulus of elasticity’ and ‘tensile modulus of elasticity’, possibly related to its thick matrix. Vegetative non-dividing tissue and vegetative dividing tissue were the most flexible and strong, showing the highest ‘percentage elongation at break’ and ‘tensile strength’. The patch area, which is a transition zone leading to sexually mature tissue, had moderate values of tensile properties. Meanwhile, sexually differentiated male and female tissues had the highest ‘compressive modulus of elasticity’ and lowest tensile properties. Thes tisues tended to crumble easily. Treatments in LiCl, as used for DNA extraction, resulted in a decrease in both ‘compressive modulus of elasticity’ (87%) and ‘tensile modulus of elasticity’ (54%). After treatment of tissue for chromosome staining in a method using LiCl, there was a marked decrease in ‘tensile modulus of elasticity’ (49%), while the ‘compressive modulus of elasticity’ remained unchanged. Such mechanical changes verify the softening effect of LiCl on the seaweedP. perforata tissue.

    Notes: Abstract Durvillaea antarctica was extracted with hot water and a sulfate containing polymer was obtained after separation of laminaran and alginic acid with cetrimide and 2% calcium chloride solutions, respectively. Gel electrophoresis showed that the acidic polysaccharide (23.5% sulfate, 4.5% uronic acid) was not homogeneous. It was fractionated by anion-exchange chromatography on DEAE Sephadex with increasing concentrations of KC1 solutions affording seven fractions. All the fractions showed blood-anticoagulant activity. The fraction eluted with 1.2 M KC1 (34.85% sulfate, 1.4% uronic acid) showed the highest thrombin time. The plaque inhibition and the transcription assays of the whole acidic polysaccharide and the partial hydrolysis product against the infectious pancreatic necrosis virus showed a slight antiviral effect. The fucose-containing polymer from D. antarcica is a mixture of sulfated polysaccharides with a different content of sulfate groups and uronic acids. A correlation was observed between the anticoagulant effect uronic acids content.

    Notes: Abstract In the last fourteen years the production of seaweeds in Chile has ranged from 74 000 to 229 000 wet metric tons per year and has included about twenty species belonging to Phaeophyta and Rhodophyta. The only source of this production has been the exploitation of natural beds, except for Gracilaria, which is the only case of commercial cultivation and contributes significant quantities to total production. Initially most of the raw material was exported but currently important quantities of Gracilaria and several carrageenophytes are being processed by local industry. Changes in production of the main resources are analyzed with consideration of potential demand, level of knowledge about natural beds, and the situation of total Gracilaria farming, in order to attempt predictions for the supply. Current possibilities of applying new technologies to cultivate other economically important Chilean seaweeds are also analyzed and discussed.

    Notes: Abstract Fully developed thalli of Chondrus crispus, Gracilaria chilensis, Gymnogongrus furcellatus and Mazzaella laminarioides were used to assess tissue compatibility. The effect of thallus polarity on grafting and regeneration was also evaluated. Fusion did occur between fragments of the same life history phase in C. crispus, G. chilensis, G. furcellatus and M. laminarioides. Fusion between sporophytic and gametophytic tissue occurred in C. crispus, G. chilensis and M. laminarioides. Intergeneric fusion was observed between C. crispus and M. laminarioides, but not between G. chilensis and G. furcellatus. Outer cell wall, cortex and medulla were continuous at the contact face in compatible combinations. Medullary cells in the attached fragments were thinner and longer than normal cells, forming an interwoven scar plate. Thallus polarity did not modify fusion and regeneration.

    Notes: Abstract Single-copy nuclear genes encoding cytosolic glyceraldehyde-3-phosphate dehydrogenase (GapC), triosephosphate isomerase (TPI1) and polyubiquitin (UBI6R), plastid-localized GAPDH (GapA), and mitochondrial aconitase (m-ACN), together with their corresponding cDNAs, have been cloned or PCR-amplified from Gracilaria verrucosa, sequenced, and characterized by genomic Southern hybridization. Three spliceosomal introns were found, one each near the 5′ end of GapA, GapC, and m-ACN. Codon usage is biased, with third-position A's underrepresented. Nucleotide compositions of the genes are balanced except in TPI1. Upstream promoter structure, downstream poly(A) processing signals, intron splice junctions, and one translation initiation site were analyzed. Poly(A) processing features of these red algal genes resemble those of green plants more than those of animals.

    Notes: Abstract Antibacterial activity of lipid extracts from three species of Caribbean marine algae, Spyridia filamentosa, S. hypnoides and Wrangelia bicuspidata was evaluated monthly for one year. Activities were tested for whole plant extracts and TLC-separable zones. Whole plant extracts demonstrated monthly variability in activity with respect to both habitat and life history phase in addition to periods of similarity. No consistency was seen regarding activity against different microorganisms. TLC analyses of the extracts led to the identification of twenty-seven chromatographically distinct regions (TLC zones) each from both S. filamentosa and S. hypnoides and twenty-five from W. bicuspidata, which demonstrated antimicrobial activity. Between these species, twenty-one active TLC zones appeared to be shared based on their similar chromatographic characteristics. Individual TLC zones also demonstrated variable activity throughout the sampling period with respect to habitat and life history phase as well as periods of similarity. Algal antibiosis in these species is recognized as being highly complex, involving numerous chemical compounds, each of which is highly variable in terms of its presence and/or probable concentration.

    Notes: Abstract Palmaria decipiens, one of the most abundant red seaweeds of the chilean Antarctic, was collected in King George Island. The hot water extract (26% yield) showed by acid hydrolysis to contain xylose, galactose and traces of glucose. Fractionation with cetrimide gave a soluble neutral xylan and an insoluble fraction. The insoluble fraction afforded an acidic polysaccharide that contained 4.8% of uronic acids, 2.8% of sulfate and 18.9% of protein. Polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis showed that it was homogeneous. The GLC and HPLC analysis of the total acidic hydrolysis products showed that the acidic polysaccharide was composed of the neutral sugars galactose and xylose in the molar ratio 8.2:1.0 and of galacturonic and glucuronic acid in the ratio 1.5:1.0. The second-derivative FT-IR spectrum showed the characteristic amide I, II and III bands of proteins. Alkaline cleavage with 0.1 M NaOH indicated the presence of a glycoprotein with O-glycosidic linkage. Results found in this work suggest that the acidic polysaccharide extracted from Palmaria decipiens is an acidic xylogalactan-protein complex.

    Notes: Abstract Palmaria palmata, which is able to use HCO inf3 sup− as a carbon source for photosynthesis, and Lomentaria articulata, which is dependent on diffusive uptake of dissolved CO2, were grown under constant light and light with sunflecks designed to model wave-induced fluctuations of near-shore underwater light. Both species exhibited significantly increased stable carbon isotope discrimination (more negative values of δ13C relative to PDB) when grown with sunflecks. More negative δ13C values were associated with decreased growth rate of P. palmata but not of L. articulata. The contrasting effects of sunflecks on the carbon-use characteristics of the two species are discussed in terms of the energetic cost of HCO inf3 sup− use and the susceptibility of CO2 diffusion-dependent species to photoinhibition.

    Notes: Abstract Microalgae and macrophytes adapt their pigment content to the environment because excessive light could limit their photosynthetic rate by inducing photoinhibition. Carotenoids participate in the photoadaptative response especially through the operation of xanthophyll cycles (violaxanthin-zeaxanthin or diadinoxanthin-diatoxanthin). An increasing gradient of diatoxanthin in phytoplankton chromophytes is found from the inshore to the offshore waters, less turbid in relation to the different light penetration in seawater. In addition, a nyctemeral cycle is noted, with a suppression of diatoxanthin at night and its accumulation with the increase of the light. Similarly the vertical distribution, on the French Brittany coasts, of several Gracilaria and Gracilariopsis species corresponds to increasing zeaxanthin amounts in the seaweeds living at the upper zones, which are more resistant to photoinhibition as shown by fluorescence and oxygen evolution analysis. An operating xanthophyll cycle should be regarded as a regulatory mechanism involved in stress response for the dissipation of excessive excitation energy through deepoxidated xanthophylls such as zeaxanthin or diatoxanthin.

    Notes: Abstract Phosphate concentration of the growth medium was found to affect the growth rate and agar yield of a clone of Gelidium robustum grown in the laboratory. To study differences in growth we used phosphate concentrations from 0 to 200 µM. To determine the effect of phosphate on agar yield and its properties we used concentrations from 0 to 20 µM. Growth rates generally increased with increasing phosphate concentration, with the highest growth rate (21% d−1) obtained at 150 µM. Agar yield as percentage of fresh weight was highest (10%) in the algae grown with low phosphate concentrations, but agar yield as percentage of dry weight was highest(43%) at 20 µM of phosphate. Gel strength increased with phosphate concentration with a maximum of 160 g m−2 for 0.75% gels for the cultures at 20 µM. Melting and gelling temperatures of the gels were also affected by phosphate concentration of the growth medium. Starch yield was highest in algae grown in low phosphate concentrations.

    Notes: Abstract The aim of this paper is to test the ability of imaging radiometers to describe the principal seaweed and seagrass beds along the coast of Brittany (France). In this work we used CASI, an instrument with programmable narrow bands. On the ground, regions of homogeneous vegetation cover were mapped using differential GPS positioning. Ground spectra were recorded with a field spectroradiometer (Spectron SE 590), for substratum and different species. Their analysis shows variations in relation to pigment characteristics, vegetation structure and environmental conditions. An algorithm sequence based on field work and according to the technical sensor characteristics, was developed to discriminate the dominant species. The classified CASI image was compared with ground data. The main results are the following P ] (a) the visible wavelengths allow good discrimination between green, red and brown algae. (b) the infrared wavelengths allow separation of two main types of brown species, seagrasses and the identification of floating seaweed.

    Notes: Abstract Seasonal variation in a Fucus serratus assemblage was studied on the Isle of Man, UK over a 13-month period. Algal cover varied greatly, related to shedding reproductive fronds and winter storms. Peak reproduction was recorded in the autumn. There was little change in density of plants, the population was dominated by a bank of germlings (〈20 cm) and an adult mode between 50–70 cm. An indistinct third component of recruiting juveniles was present when gaps in the canopy formed. Seasonal variation in the algae was reflected in the population dynamics of the mobile epiphytes such as Littorina mariae and Lacuna pallidula, which exhibited annual life histories. Sessile species (such as bryozoans) utilized the algae year round, dominating the perennial stipes and lower fronds, which were not shed. Other species utilized the algae in a transient fashion: some feeding on the algae (e.g. Idotea), or other epiphytic animals (e.g. Nucella). Fucus serratus, therefore, provides a variety of spatially and temporally variable niches that explain the diversity of epiphytic animal species that exploit this alga.

    Notes: Abstract Micropopulation differences in phenol content between intertidal and subtidal individuals of the kelp Lessonia nigrescens were found. Subtidal plants showed: (1) significantly higher phenol content than intertidal individuals, in vegetative and reproductive tissues, (2) intra-plant differences, with higher content in apical frond tissues, (3) higher resistance to consumption by herbivorous fishes. The microscopic progeny of subtidal plants showed the same trend as adult plants: (1) haploid spores from subtidal plants had higher phenol content than spores from intertidal individuals, and (2) the microscopic sporophytes derived from subtidal spores and gametophytes were less consumed by herbivorous snails (Tegula tridentata) than those derived from intertidal plant propagules. No increase in phenol content was detected after mechanical injury to experimental fronds, or after transplantation to the subtidal environment. In addition to the absence of inducible responses, the different phenol content between intertidal and subtidal individuals, in adult diploid plants and also in the haploid progeny, suggests that both environments differ someway enough to fix the mentioned features on the plants of Lessonia nigrescens. It is likely that the differences in herbivory between the two distributional extremes contributed to the observed pattern.

    Notes: Abstract Analysis of DNA can help to distinguish those morphological characters indicative of species difference from those representing retained traits or parallel evolution. This can be of great value in detecting recent invaders. The choice of which DNA characters to examine not only dictates the methodology to be used but must also be appropriate for the detection level sought. Restriction endonuclease fragment comparisons of plastid DNA have been used to assess Codium species; the results show C. fragile subsp. tomentosoides from east and west coast North America to be identical while sympatric endemic Codium species each display their own unique set of fragments. For species of other algae, plastid DNA fragment patterns are not necessarily identical across a morphological species, e.g. Pandorina morum. Such repetitive element probes as M13 and the use of RAPDs are more appropriate for analysis of populations within species. DNA base sequence comparisons of nuclear rDNA genes often yield too few variant bases between closely related species for reliable identifications. Analysis of the more variable Internal Transcribed Spacer (ITS) region, lying between the small and large ribosomal subunit genes in nuclear DNA, yields more extensive base pair variation between species and relatively little within species; it may be an alternative choice for endonuclease restriction fragment analysis or for sequencing.

    Notes: Abstract The kelp Laminaria saccharina dominates soft bottoms in 4–10 m depth in Kiel Bay. Experimental sporophytes transplanted to 2 and 5 m depth showed the typical annual growth pattern of Laminaria species. Surprisingly, 2 m plants died after the first resting phase, whereas 5 m plants survived and showed outgrowth of a new blade generation. Thalli at both depths were infected with the brown algal endophyte Streblonema aecidioides, with host deformations being significantly stronger in 2 m plants. Growth rates of infected sporophytes were reduced. Exclusion of UV light in 2 m depth resulted in less infected thalli. Discs excised from L. saccharina and cultivated in different photon fluence rates from 10–600 µmol m−2 s−1 did not differ in growth rate, photosynthesis or dark respiration. Hence, an exclusion of L. saccharina from shallow depths caused by high light cannot be concluded. We suggest the biological interaction with the endophyte S. aecidioides, amplified by UV light, to be most important for the exclusion of L. saccharina from shallow depths in the western Baltic.

    Notes: Abstract Changes in the structure of the Ascophyllum nodosum population at Pubnico, southwest Nova Scotia, Canada, at an experimental site subjected to mechanical harvest and at two control sites never subjected to mechanical harvest were monitored from 1991 to 1994. A bimodal population structure measured in terms of plant length was characteristic of all these sites before the experiment. The population structure of the experimental site became unimodal immediately after experimental harvest by machine and remained unimodal for the subsequent two years. However, a bimodal population structure began to appear in the third year. A bimodal population structure remained evident at the control site with bedrock as the substratum but was less evident at the other control site where the substratum is made up of boulders and cobbles. Movement of loose rocks with rockweeds still attached may have contributed to the less distinct modal structure of this control site. Other sites with different harvesting histories monitored in the summer of 1992 showed some interesting patterns. A unimodal population structure was evident in Argyle Sound and Pubnico Point South and at Charlesville, which had been harvested one and two years before, respectively. A bimodal population structure was more evident at Frenchman's Point, which had been harvested three years prior. The rate of change from a unimodal to a bimodal population structure may depend on the intensity of harvest. Extensive canopy removal in intensively harvested areas may be conducive to an influx of recruits and to regeneration from the holdfast. Hence, plant length modal structure may be a useful measure of the relative state of recovery of a harvested population.

    Notes: Abstract The Lotka-Volterra competition model was used to represent the interaction between Laurencia obtusa and Hypnea spinella. A new model that considers effects of competition on algal carrying capacity is suggested. To test the models, data from field experiments conducted in an intertidal region at Cabo Frio Island, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, were used. Both models showed that Hypnea was a stronger competitor than Laurencia. The model of interaction through the carrying capacity showed a stable coexistence between the algal populations and better represented the experimental data.

    Notes: Abstract In spring (August) 1993 a bloom of Ulva lactuca appeared for the first time in Saldanha Bay, South Africa, and persisted through summer. Ulva wash-ups contaminated the beach and part of the commercial Gracilaria beach-cast had to be discarded. The biomass and distribution of Gracilaria and Ulva are described in relation to the seasonal water chemistry of the bay. Gracilaria survives in deeper water in summer by the pulsing of nutrients on an approximately 6-day cycle of movement of the thermocline that separates nutrient-rich bottom water from warm oligotrophic surface water. Ammonium-rich fish-factory discharge into this surface layer in a sector of the bay provided localised conditions for Ulva to out-compete Gracilaria at depths of 2–5m, demonstrating the powerful disruptive effect of eutrophication in this strongly stratified system.

    Notes: Abstract The aim of this work is to describe changes in heavy metal concentrations in Ascophyllum nodosum from 1964 to 1994. Samples were collected from three sites in the Firth of Clyde and analysed for zinc, manganese, iron, copper, lead and nickel. The results were analysed using the multivariate technique Principal Components Analysis (PCA). At the Wemyss Bay site there was a trend towards increasing lead and nickel over the study period, which could not be accounted for by local industrial activity. At the Hunterston site, two groups were well separated by the PCA ordination, based on manganese and zinc concentrations, which corresponded to land reclamation activities in the area. The separation of samples at the Ardneil Bay site correlated well with copper concentration and this corresponded to the termination of industrial effluent with heavy copper loadings. Other changes in industrial effluent were also reflected in the Hunterston and Ardneil Bay site ordinations. The PCA technique highlighted the interplay between metals. The work demonstrated the potential for using multivariate analysis of seaweed metal concentrations in monitoring a posteriori the environmental impact of industrial change.

    Notes: Abstract The extreme phenotypic variability recognized among the species of Gracilaria has highlighted the need for the application of refined methods to help solve taxa identifications. In Chile, there still exists uncertainty about the exact number of Gracilaria species. Our investigations are centered on DNA analyses of morphotypes collected from different geographical locations, namely Lenga and Isla Santa María, Region VIII (36°00′ S to 38°00′ S), and Maullín, Region X (39°30′ S to 43°40′ S). These two regions of Chile are considered as areas of confluence of G. chilensis, G. verrucosa, and a species of Gracilariopsis. In this study four morphotypes, from a natural bed located in Maullín, were analyzed for RFLP of plastid DNA and the results compared with data of four morphotypes from a bed in Lenga. The DNA banding patterns from each enzyme digest were identical irrespective of morphotypes and/or locations. In an attempt to unravel the nature of the morphological differences found among Lenga and Maullín morphotypes, RAPD analyses of nuclear DNA were also performed; however, no polymorphism has been found yet. Therefore, the data of this study, as well as concurrent data from preliminary interfertility tests, suggest that all morphotypes belong to a single taxon, Gracilaria chilensis.

    Notes: Abstract This paper describes experiments to grow a local and still unidentified species of Gracilaria in shrimp hatcheries in Ecuador. The experiments used outdoor tanks of 1 and 18 m3 capacity, with continuous aeration and water renewal every two and five days, respectively. The sea water (salinity 34 ppt) was enriched with Guillard's f/2 medium; light and temperature were monitored but not controlled. One kg of fresh seaweed, inoculated into each tank, produced a biomass of ca. 3 kg in a period of 35 days in the 1 m3 tank and 18 kg in 43 days in the 18 m3 tank. We therefore believe that it is technically feasible to use the large infrastructure of existing shrimp hatcheries in Ecuador to produce Gracilaria.

    Notes: Abstract Pterocladia capillacea forms dense intertidal belts in southeastern Brazil, on moderately exposed rocky coasts. The studied population extends along a gradient of water exposure, where slightly different morphotypes can be recognized. Specimens were collected monthly from 3 points along the exposure gradient of its distribution (lower, medium and higher exposure), and analyzed for agar, sulfate and 3,6 anhydrogalactose content. Agar varied from 5–32% of dried seaweed with lower yields in the winter, and higher yields in late spring/early summer. Specimens from the surf side of the distribution had a consistently higher agar content throughout the year. Sulfate varied from 1–5%, and 3,6 AG from 27–48% of dried agar, without a clear variation among the sites.

    Notes: Abstract On Normandy coasts, the red alga Delesseria sanguinea perennates by its stipe; fronds grow in January and disappear in June. Seasonal variations in sterol composition in relation to the biology of D. sanguinea are reported. Sterols in cellular membranes are free or conjugated by esterification with fatty acids, heterosides or lipid complexes like phospholipids. Both kinds of sterols were analyzed by GC-MS. The major sterol (80%) found in fronds was cholesterol whereas in stipes, cholesterol was also the major sterol in spring, but in September, an important reduction in cholesterol yield was noted with proportional increase in sitosterol content. It appears that cholesterol is synthesized in fronds in spring, then transferred to the stipe, which loses an important amount of cholesterol with loss of the blades.

    Notes: Abstract Kjellmaniella crassifolia, the edible macro-brown alga in Japan contained nearly 27% of alginates of which nearly 7% was extractable from the fronds with boiling water for 6 h and the residual alginates in the frond were almost exhaustively extracted with a dilute alkali at 60 °C for 6 h. The alginates dissolved in all these extracts with both boiling water and dilute alkali were purified by fractionation with MgCl2 and alcohol. The content of MM blocks in the boiling water-soluble alginate sample increased remarkably during heating for 6 h while that of GG blocks from the same sample decreased. In contrast, MM blocks in the alkali-soluble alginate sample decreased during 6 h heating while GG blocks continued to increase. Since the amounts of MG blocks showed slight fluctation, the M:G ratio of alginates extracted with boiling water increased towards the end of extraction whereas the reverse is true for the alkali-soluble alginates.

    Notes: Abstract Carrageenan has annual sales of over US$ 200 million, about 15% of the world use of food hydrocolloids. The market for carrageenan has grown exponentially at 5% per year for at least 25 years: 5 500 metric tons in 1970, and over 20 000 metric tons expected in 1995. The industry has become dominated by very large, multi-product companies with carrageenan factories in Europe and the US, but factories are now springing up in the Philippines and Chile, where red seaweeds grow in abundance. About 80 000 tons of dry red seaweeds are needed to produce 20 000 tons of carrageenan. About 40 000 tons comes from the Philippines, 15 000 tons from Indonesia, 15 000 tons from Chile, and 10 000 tons from elsewhere. Carrageenan growth depends on food fads like the McLean hamburger and food winners like processed pork and turkey. Carrageenan is a regulated food additive, and current health concerns focus on the minimum safe molecular weight for carrageenan when eaten. The most innovative development in carrageenans in recent years has been the introduction of a food grade version of lower cost natural grade carrageenan. Its acceptance, however, has been hampered by strong resistance from conventional carrageenan producers.

    Notes: Abstract A theoretical model linking the production of salmon, mussels and seaweed in floating, enclosed units is based on field data, laboratory tests and literature data. First step is the production of 300 metric tons of salmon in 12 production units of 500 m3 each and a total water flow of 60 m3 min−1. Using a standard high energy dry feed with a feed conversion factor of 1, a production of 300 metric tons of salmon is calculated to produce 15 metric tons of nitrogen (N) and 2.4 metric tons of phosphate (P), of which 13 metric tons of N and 0.7 metric tons of P are dissolved. Outlet water is transferred from the salmon units to 12 closed units (500 m3 each) with blue mussels. A standing stock of 112.5 metric tons of mussels (WW) is necessary to filtrate 60 m3 min−1. If all particles are filtrated through the mussels, 25% of the nitrogen is accumulated as increased biomass. 25–30% is released as faeces and 45–50% as dissolved matter. Particles are removed by a sedimentation trap. Outlet water from the 12 mussel filter units, containing 13.9 metric tons of dissolved N (0.9 metric tons from the mussels), is transferred to closed units (1000 m3) with seaweeds. Concentration of N is calculated to 0.44 g N m−3 and hydraulic retention time in the seaweed production unit is 4 hours. With a DW of 20% (4% N of DW) and an estimated growth rate of 10% d−1 during the production period, a standing stock of 45 metric tons (FW) of seaweed is theoretically needed to bind up all dissolved N from the salmon and mussel production.

    Notes: Abstract Most of the agar production in the world now comes from terete species of Gracilariaceae, a notoriously difficult group with regard to species circumscription. We have studied different populations of such algae from Brazil and from abroad in order to ascertain their identity and relationship. We based our taxonomic concepts on traditional morphological markers and attempted crosses between putatively interspecific and geographically isolated intraspecific populations. Data from the crosses helped in the recognition of genera and species with convergent morphologies and between disjunct populations. Our results show that configuration of male reproductive structures and some features of cystocarp anatomy are reliable taxonomic characters whereas some morphological features, such as gross thallus morphology and branching pattern, are not.

    Notes: Abstract Brown algal species diversity is compared in 100 km sections of the coastlines of four warm temperate regions: southern Australia, California, southwestern Africa, north-central Chile. The highest diversity (over 140 species per section) is found in southern Australia. California has a reasonable diversity (around 70 species per section), and both southern Australia and California have high regional endemism. Sections of north-central Chile and southwestern Africa have similar patterns, with low diversity (〈 30 species per 100 km section), low endemism, few or no fucoids, and up to 25% of the brown algal flora are environmentally tolerant species of Scytosiphonales. Species turnover between contiguous sections of coast is generally related to relative change in temperature regime. Thus the high diversity of southern Australia is due to high species diversity within the 100 km sections, with little turnover, except for a rapid reduction in eastern Victoria likely to be related to lack of rocky substatum. It is hypothesized that low diversity and endemism in Chile and southwestern Africa can be explained by the occurrence of major environmental perturbations (upwelling and El Nino effects) in these regions, producing variable inter-annual temperature conditions that select out tolerant species from the local floras.

    Notes: Abstract Reproductive allocation, the proportion of total dry weight allocated to receptacle tissue and reproductive effort, the proportion of reproductive carbon requirement contributed by receptacle photosynthesis, were measured in two fucoid algal species Fucus serratus and Himanthalia elongata at sites in NE Scotland. Reproductive development takes over ten months in H. elongata, a semelparous (single reproductive event) species, and reproductive allocation at receptacle maturity is over 98%. Following gamete release, the whole thallus dies. In contrast, reproductive development in F. serratus takes four months. Fucus serratus is iteroparous (capable of multiple reproductive events), reproductive allocation is 38.6% for the first reproductive event and 50.5% for the following year's event. In Fucus serratus, the receptacles appear to make a major contribution to their own carbon requirements after the first month of reproductive development. The receptacles of Himanthalia elongata contribute only a small proportion of the receptacle carbon requirements in the first four months of reproductive development, after which the contribution made through receptacle photosynthesis increases.

    Notes: Abstract In December 1992, some sporophytes of the Asian kelp Undaria pinnatiftda were found growing subtidally at 6 m depth below ‘A. Storni’ Port, Puerto Madryn, Argentina. During the winter of 1994, the species expanded significantly from its original location. Sporelings appear in early autumn and attain their maximum size (1.65 ± 0.10 m) during winter and early spring, when most of them become fertile. The fronds are lost in summer, with only some holdfasts and sporophylls surviving, and these disappear by the end of summer. The occurrence of U. pinnatida in Golfo Nuevo is reportedly due to an accidental introduction by cargo ships or fishing vessels arriving from Asian ports.

    Notes: Abstract Since its first introduction into the Atlantic for farming purposes in 1983, the brown alga Undaria pinnatifida has been found at several sites along the European coasts. The present study deals with an ecological experiment that was performed at the island of Ushant (Brittany, France) in order to check the ability of Undaria to recruit to a rocky substratum in situ. On the one hand, the authors were unsuccessful in getting Undaria to colonize a previously denuded area of shore, which was subsequently colonized by other native species, a result that may speak for a competition between Undaria and the local kelps. On the other hand, evidence is presented that Undaria pinnatifida has become a member of the Atlantic flora for good. The sporophytes can be found growing from low water mark of neap tide (+1.5 m) down to at least −15 m below lower water mark of spring tide. Its propagation is thought to occur in at least two ways: either step by step from cultivation sites along the coasts, or from the hulls of ships sailing from harbour to harbour. The preference of Undaria for settlement is on artificial structures.

    Notes: Abstract Gelidium sesquipedale fecundity was quantified by counting tetrasporangial sori and cystocarps per meter squared and by estimating the number of spores contained inside them. These were obtained by regression on a size metric of reproductive structures. Tetrasporangial sori length and cystocarp thickness were the best estimators of spore number. To assess spore recruitment, 12 pottery tiles were fixed to the bottom, and the appearance of small fronds was monitored. No clear seasonal pattern of reproduction was found. Tetraspore production peaked in March 1990 with 10.4 × 106 spores m−2, whereas the carpospore peak was lower, 4.9 × 105 spores m−2 in July 1989. Recruitment followed tetraspore peaks. The probability of a G. sesquipedale tetraspore making the transition to a recruit was 4.7 × 10−5. Frond length was significantly related to tetrasporangial sori number, while cystocarp number was only related to frond branching order. Minimum size for reproduction was 6.9 cm for gametophytes and 5.4 cm for tetrasporophytes; very rarely were cystocarpic fronds smaller than 9 cm, while tetrasporic fronds were often longer than 15 cm. Cystocarpic fronds were significantly shorter and had more branches than tetrasporic fronds.

    Notes: Abstract This study reports the variations in biomass and reproductive phenology in a natural bed of Gigartina skottsbergii over a period of a year and correlates these variations with the abiotic factors solar radiation, number of daylight hours, water temperature and salinity. The results obtained show an annual production cycle with maximum biomass values in spring-summer, correlated with high solar radiation and to a lesser extent with salinity. Sexual reproduction was maximum in autumn-winter, correlated with low temperature and short-day conditions. The population showed a large gametophytic dominance according to size and biomass, which suggests that there is not ecological equivalence between the life history phases of the species. Finally, based on the results, a restriction of harvesting to spring-summer is suggested.

    Notes: Abstract The present paper describes growth dynamics in a natural bed of the resource ‘luga negra’ (Sarcothalia crispata) in Guapilinao, southern Chile (41°57′ S, 73°31′ W). This resource is currently harvested and exported as raw material for the production of carrageenan. Seasonal variation in biomass, frond size, density and phenology was determined by periodic sampling. Natural recruitment was evaluated on different substrata added to the field; at the same time, substrata were inoculated under greenhouse conditions. Results showed that ‘luga negra’ has seasonal growth: biomass increased from a minimum in spring to a maximum in mid to late summer. On the other hand, density was minimal in winter (200 ind. m−2) and increased to 2000 ind. m−2 in late spring. Peak abundance of mature tetrasporic fronds occurred in late summer, whereas that of cystocarpic fronds occurred in winter. Recruitment began in summer and extended into winter. Survival on different substrata were compared. Gametophytes had better survival rates on clam shells and 5 mm rope while tetrasporophytes had the best survival rate on clam shells and secondarily on boulders.

    Notes: Abstract The negative relationship between stand biomass and plant density observed in terrestrial plants was tested among fronds of a clonal red alga, Mazzaella cornucopiae. Stand biomass and frond density were estimated bimonthly for 1 year on 7 permanent quadrats. A positive linear correlation was found between biomass and density for the whole data set, suggesting the lack of self-thinning among fronds of this intertidal alga at natural densities. Higher frond densities could favor increased water retention among fronds, thus minimizing desiccation during low tides. In this way, stands could maintain higher production of biomass. Fronds may also be cushioned better against wave action at higher frond densities, thus decreasing the detachment of larger fronds. The temporal variation of the relationship between biomass and density was plotted separately for these 7 quadrats. Four quadrats showed positive linear correlation between both variables (the other three quadrats showed non-significant positive linear correlation). Their four slopes are statistically similar to that found for the entire data set. It is possible, then, that there is only one positive slope for the biomass-density relationship in this population. If this is true, standing biomass could be estimated from the density of fronds.

    Notes: Abstract Results of a seasonal study on biomass in an infralittoral population of Iridaea cordata from Terra Nova Bay (Ross Sea, Antarctica) are reported. Thalli were collected during the IX Italian Antarctic Expedition (austral summer 1993–94). The population studied is that living at depths of 4 to 6 m, where the highest density of plants occurred. The highest value of biomass (wet weight 3440 g m−2) was found at the beginning of summer. In that period 72.5% of biomass was from 128 specimens belonging to weight classes 8 (〉16 to 32 g) to 10 (〉64 g), corresponding to 13.4% of the population in numbers. Small (〈1 g) and medium (1 to 8 g) specimens provided the remaining biomass of 5% and 22.5%, respectively. During the month of January, the number of heavy specimens decreased. At the end of that month biomass reached a minimum of 2225 g m−2. In February the biomass increased to 3169 g m −2, 72% of which was from 120 specimens belonging to weight classes 7 (〉8 to 16 g) to 9 (〉32 to 64 g), which numerically represented 18.5% of the population. Data showed that biomass depended mainly on the presence of large heavy specimens, even though they were always few in number. Moreover, the occurrence of such large thalli at the beginning of summer suggests that Iridaea cordata continues to grow during the long antarctic winter.

    Notes: Abstract The Exxon Valdez oil spill in March 1989 and subsequent cleanup caused injury to intertidal Fucus gardneri populations especially in the upper intertidal. A survey in 1994 in Prince William Sound, Alaska showed that the upper boundary of Fucus populations at oiled sites was still an average of 0.4 m lower than the upper boundary at unoiled sites. Restoration of severely damaged Fucus populations was started on a small-scale at a heavily oiled rocky site in Herring Bay, Prince William Sound. Experiments employed mats of biodegradable erosion control fabric to act as a substratum for Fucus germlings and to protect germlings from heat and desiccation stress. A series of plots was covered with mats made from a resilient coconut-fiber fabric in June 1993. Half of the mats were inoculated with Fucus zygotes. A series of uncovered control plots was also monitored. There was no enhancement of Fucus recruitment on the rock surfaces under the mats. Dense populations of Fucus developed on the surface of all of the mats by the summer of 1994. The natural rock surfaces in the control plots, both inoculated and not, were barren of macroscopic algal cover. By September 1994, the juvenile thalli on the mats were approximately 2 cm in length. Inoculating the mats had an effect only in the upper region of the intertidal. It is expected that the thalli will become fertile during the 1995 season. These thalli may serve as a source of embryos to enhance the recovery of new Fucus populations in this high intertidal area.

    Notes: Abstract A growth inhibition test method was developed using the macroalga Gracilaria tenuistipitata as the test organism. This alga was chosen because of its high laboratory growth rates, commonly 30–40% d−1, which are reached in salinities between 5 and 40‰, and its epiphyte resistance. The toxicity of a number of substances, including heavy metals, herbicides and complex wastewaters towards the alga was assayed. Anti-fouling paints were tested with a modification of the method. EC50 values for heavy metals varied between 0.05 and 17 mg l−1 and for herbicides between 0.002 and 0.02 mg l−l. The sensitivity to the toxicant was generally higher at low salinity. Omitting nitrogen and phosphorus additions to the test medium increased the sensitivity and a semi-static performance was possible with maintained or increased sensitivity. Preliminary tests done with a computerised photosynthesis inhibition method produced promising results. In conclusion, this is a simple, sensitive and reproducible test method for assessing the toxicity of substances, wastewaters and anti-fouling paints in brackish and marine environments.

    Notes: Abstract The injection of exogenous carbon into intensively cultivated algal tanks is necessary to insure a maximum growth rate by stabilizing the dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC) pool, but represents the major part of the cultivation cost (ca. 73%). This study was conducted in paddle-wheel tanks ranging in size from 260 m2 to 1000 m2. Additional carbon was provided by carbon dioxide mixed into the incoming sea water through a tubular reactor. Production vs pH was analysed on 120 growth measurements covering two years of continuous cultivation. Whereas production peaked at pH 8.0–8.2, the economic optimum for pH regulation was in the range 8.4–8.5, where CO2 injection was greatly reduced (−29%) for only a slight decrease in production (−4%). Expressed as a function of pH level, the specific carbon injection (g c gdw−1 of Chondrus produced) showed an inverse exponential relationship, whereas gross photoconversion ratio (gdw mol photons−1) varied according to a second degree equation with a low amplitude. The photoconversion ratio was not improved when the culture was maintained at a DIC concentration higher than the natural equilibrium (0.64 ± 0.11 gdw mol photons−1 at 2.35 mM and 0.65 ± 0.15 gdw mol photons−1 at 3.19 MM). A complementary source of carbon was found in underground salt water with a high and stable DIC concentration (10.15 ± 0.25 mmole Cl−1). The mixing of the well water with natural sea water allowed another economy of CO2 (−20% at pH 8.5) and nutrients (−12%), the total unitary cost of production being cut by about 17%.

    Notes: Abstract The brown alga Laminaria saccharina is the dominant subtidal macroalga in Kiel Bay, western Baltic. It is infected by the microscopic brown alga, Streblonema aecidioides. Infected thalli may show symptoms of Streblonema disease, i.e. alterations of blade and stipe, ranging from dark spots to heavy deformations and completely crippled thalli. Samples taken from a single locality all year round show that (i) the host population is infected at a high rate of 87±13% (SD), but that (ii) a considerable proportion of thalli containing Streblonema does not show disease symptoms, and that (iii) juvenile hosts, which mainly appear in autumn, are infected at almost the same rate. Thus the infection seems to occur early in the host's life. Juveniles in nature show fewer symptoms of the disease than adults. Two months after infection, oxygen production and growth in laboratory-raised experimentally infected juvenile hosts was not different from uninfected controls. Experimental thalli showed more severe morphological alterations than uninfected controls only four months after infection. Both field and laboratory observations indicate that a lag phase exists between infection and outbreak of the disease.

    Notes: Abstract Gracilaria changii, recorded from Malaysia and Thailand, is one of the more abundant agarophytic seaweeds found in Malaysia. A wild population of Gracilaria changii growing in mangroves was monitored for seasonal variation in agar content and gel strength as well as spore production. Agar yield and gel strength ranged from 12 to 25% dry weight and 294 to 563 g cm−2, respectively, over a 15-month period. Gel strength but not yield was positively correlated with amount of rainfall. Cystocarps were observed throughout the study, but use of sporetraps showed that spore release peaked around July–August and January–February after the two monsoon periods. Mariculture of Gracilaria changii in shallow ponds in the mangroves, in an irrrigation canal and in a shrimp farm pond was conducted. Average growth rate of cuttings tied to monofilament lines was 3.3 ± 1.7% d−1, 8.4 ± 1.8% d−1 and 3.6 ± 1.6% d−1 respectively. Cuttings were lost to siltation, wave action, predation and heavy epiphytisation. These studies show that Gracilaria changii has potential commercial application in the agar industry.

    Notes: Abstract Results of the first phase of production of "seed" for a project of marine culture of species of Gelidiales are presented. Vegetative fragments of different sizes and from different parts of the thallus of Gelidium sclerophyllum from the Mexican tropical Pacific coast were cultured under nine treatments with different N and P concentrations. In treatments without N all fragments died; good vegetative growth was present in all remaining treatments. Growth in length and branch production were favored in medial fragments, and rhizoid production was favored in apices. Growth in length and biomass increase were stimulated by high N concentrations (2–3 mM), and branch and rhizoid production were stimulated by high P concentrations (100–150 µM).

The comparison shows that the results obtained with the analytical expressions are in excellent accord with the numerical ones and, on the other hand, provide a theoretical justification for a proposed empirical expression for the energies of the two-dimensional hydrogen atom with a logarithmic potential energy function. © 1996 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

    Notes: An analysis of the structure of the optimized effective Kohn-Sham exchange potential vx and its gradient approximations is presented. The potential is decomposed into the Slater potential vs and the response of vs to density variations, vresp. The latter exhibits peaks that reflect the atomic shell structure. Kohn - Sham exchange potentials derived from current gradient approaches for the exchange energy are shown to be quite reasonable for the Slater potential, but they fail to approximate the response part, which leads to poor overall potentials. Improved potentials are constructed by a direct fit of vx with a gradient-dependent Padé approximant form. The potentials obtained possess proper asymptotic and scaling properties and reproduce the shell structure of the exact vx. © 1996 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

    Notes: Analytical exact expressions are obtained for matrix elements of the modified Pöschl-Teller oscillator over different operators including powers of the hyperbolic functions sinh(α x), cosh(α x), and tanh(α x) and the differential operators d/dx and d2/dx2. These expressions are derived using explicitly the Pöschl-Teller eigenfunctions. In addition, several recursion relations connecting different Pöschl-Teller matrix elements are obtained using the factorization and hypervirial techniques. It is shown that these relations can be used to make easier the computation of the matrix elements. © 1996 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

    Notes: The D-dimensional Coulomb system serves as a starting point for generating generalized atomic shells. These shells are ordered according to a generalized Madelung rule in D dimensions. This rule together with an Aufbau Prinzip is applied to produce a D-dimensional periodic table. A model is developed to rationalize the ordering of the shells predicted by the generalized Madelung rule. This model is based on the introduction of a Hamiltonian, invariant under the q-deformed algebra Uq(so(D)), that breaks down the SO(D + 1) dynamical symmetry of the hydrogen atom in D dimensions. The D = 2 case (Flatland) is investigated in some detail. It is shown that the neutral atoms and the (moderately) positive ions correspond to the values q = 0.8 and q = 1, respectively, of the deformation parameter q. © John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

    Notes: Ab initio calculations at the scf level were carried out to compute the polarization potential map (mpp) of the nucleic acid bases: cytosine, thymine, uracil, adedine, and guanine. For this purpose, the Dunning's 9s5p basis set contracted to a split-valence, was selected to perform the calculations. The molecular polarization potential (mpp) at each point was evaluated by the difference between the interaction energy of the molecule with a unit point charge and the molecular electrostatic potential (mep) at that point. meps and mpps for the different molecules were computed with a density of 5 points/Å2 on the van der Waals surface of each molecule, defined using the van der Waals radii. Due to the symmetry of the molecules, only half the points were computed. The total number of points calculated was 558 for cytosine, 621 for thymine, 526 for uracil, 666 for adenine, and 699 for guanine. The results of these calculations are analyzed in terms of their implications on the molecular interactions between pairs of nucleic acid bases. © 1996 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
