    Notes: Filtration experiments were conducted using granular beds composed of nearly monosized filter grains and monodispersed suspensions. The experimental data obtained are histories of filtrate quality and pressure drop across the filter bed, from which local filter coefficient and pressure gradient were determined as functions of the specific deposit. The experimental results, together with the results of the analyses of the two limiting situations presented in Part I, were used to develop a general correlation which accounts for the change in filter performance caused by particle deposition.

    Notes: A theoretical and experimental investigation is presented for mass transfer to a rotating hemispherical electrode when direct current (DC) superimposed with symmetrical triangular- or square-wave alternating current (AC) is used for electrolysis. A film model is used for the analysis of AC concentration components. The limiting AC current density corresponding to a zero instantaneous surface concentration and the phase shift between the applied AC and the periodic potential changes are calculated and compared to the experimental studies. The experimental data agreed with the theoretical prediction to within ±8% in the regime of a dimensionless AC frequency K = (ω/Ω)Sc1/3 greater than 1 and less than 180. The mass transfer behavior with the triangular and square waves is further compared to that of the sinusoidal current. It is found that for a given AC frequency and rotational speed, the limiting AC current density on the electrode decreases in the order of traingular-wave AC 〉 sinusoidal AC 〉 square-wave AC.

    Notes: Steady state experiments and their interpretation were performed to explore the kinetics of CO oxidation over a supported Co3O4 catalyst. The rate of reaction was found to depend on temperature and the partial pressure of oxygen but not on the partial pressure of carbon monoxide.     Notes: The successful design and operation of a gas-liquid-solid fluidized-bed system depend on the ability to accurately predict the fundamental properties of the system, specifically, the hydrodynamics, the mixing of individual phases, and the heat and mass transfer properties. Identification of the flow regimes under which the system operates is crucial to an understanding of both the variations of these properties and overall system performance. This timely, comprehensive review describes in a systematic manner the status of fundamental gas-liquid-solid fluidization behavior. This review also discusses the areas in which current knowledge is deficient and further research is needed.

    Notes: A model is developed to study holdup in intermediate storage as a function of system parameters such as processing unit delay times. General results concerning the periodicity of the required storage volume, the allowable unit delay times, and the calculation of the volume are presented. Analytical expressions for the limiting volume are obtained for several special network configurations. A simple upper bound is derived for purposes of quick estimates of the limiting volume for the general case, and a gradient based algorithm is reported for obtaining the minimum volume schedule for general networks.

    Notes: The hydrodynamics of cocurrent gas-liquid flow in packed beds is analyzed by extending the concept of relative permeability to the inertial regime.The relative permeabilities of the gas and liquid phases are functions of the saturation of the liquid phase. These functions are found from an analysis of experimental data. The relations obtained are used to develop empirical correlations for predicting liquid holdup and pressure drop in gas-liquid cocurrent downflow in packed beds over a wide range of operating conditions. The correlations proposed give very good results when compared to experimental data yielding, in general, mean relative deviations lower than existing correlations. In addition, a new equation is proposed for predicting static holdup in packed beds which is based on a more physically realistic characteristic length than that used in previous studies.

    Notes: Tracer diffusivities measured with the Taylor dispersion technique are reported for carbon tetrachloride, s-trioxane, 12-crown-4, 15-crown-5, and 18-crown-6 in acetonitrile, benzene, and chlorobenzene across ranges of temperature. It is demonstrated that Stokes' law corrected with a microfriction factor successfully accounts for the diffusion behavior of even disk-shaped crown ethers. Solute and solvent molecules being effectively spherical in the context of Stokes' law, the tracer diffusion of crown ethers is found to be satisfactorily represented by a rough-hard-sphere model for molecular diffusion. The degree of success increases with decreasing solvent polarity. The diffusion data for carbon tetrachloride are also used to extend the basis of the recently developed reduced equation for the tracer diffusion of nonelectrolytes in liquids over wide temperature ranges.

    Notes: A model is presented which relates the crystal size distribution (CSD) from a mixed-suspension, mixed-product-removal (MSMPR) crystallizer to the distribution of growth rates. This model is based on the assumption that individual contact nuclei have some inherent growth rate which remains constant, but the growth rate may vary from crystal to crystal. The crystal size distribution can be calculated from prior knowledge of the growth rate distribution. Even a limited knowledge of only the coefficient of variation and the mean growth rate permits an approximation of the expected crystal size distribution. Conversely, estimates of the mean and variance of the growth rate distribution can be determined from the moments of the CSD from an MSMPR crystallizer.

    Notes: The rates of calcination of two types of limestones, ranging in particle size from 1 to 90 μm, were measured over the temperature range 516 to 1,000°C. A kinetic model based on the B.E.T. (Brunauer-Emmett-Teller method) surface area of the CaCO3 correlates the results over 5 orders of magnitude in reaction rate. The B.E.T. surface area of CaO formed by rapid calcination in dispersed-particle systems is 50 to 90 m2/g.

    Notes: A radiotracer-based method of measuring local particle deposition profiles and reentrainment rates in an electrostatic precipitator has been developed and demonstrated. In tests performed on a pilot-scale precipitator, differences in local deposition profiles obtained with and without a predeposited layer of dust on the plate were observed. Rates of reentrainment due to gas friction (aerodynamic drag) and to particle impaction on the plate were measured separately, and correlated with a semiepirical formula. Both friction and impaction reentrainment rates were found to vary as powers of the difference between the gas velocity and a minimum velocity required for reentrainment. The impaction reentrainment was found to vary as a power of the inlet dust loading.

    Notes: A method for assessing control performance at different operating conditions in a chemical process is developed using singular value analysis. The control potential of the system is established by analyzing the singular values of the steady-state system matrix. Dynamic considerations and interaction analysis can be included in the framework of the method described. The approach enables the process engineer to consider controllability of the process as well as economics in synthesizing a changeover control policy. Singular values depend on the scaling of the system, i.e., the definition of the physical dimensions of the system. The effects of scaling on the analysis are first investigated by scaling the steady-state system matrix with empirical methods, equilibration, and geometric scaling. Using the insights gained from these studies a scaling method, variable normalization and equation equilibration, which is intuitively appealing and suited for the purpose, is devised. Two typical systems, continuous stirred tank reactor and a polymerization reaction system, demonstrate the usefulness of this method.

    Notes: In Part I of this paper a methodology for the synthesis of optimal isothermal serial reactor structures for complex reactions was presented. This has been extended to nonisothermal systems in this paper.A complete review of the relevant background has been included in this paper. A graphical procedure has been presented for Type II complex reactions and a computer program has been described for Type III complex reactions. Two cases for the Van de Vusse reaction scheme and a naphthalene oxidation example have been used to illustrate the synthesis approach.

    Notes: The collection mechanism of polystyrene latices of 0.6 μm in diameter in electroflotation has been examined both theoretically and experimentally as extension of our previous work (1980).     Notes: Gas/liquid mass transfer has been studied in air/water fluidized beds of 0.05-8 mm glass spheres in a 0.14 m diameter reactor. The volumetric mass transfer coefficients kL a were independent of bed height, and, for particle diameters up to 1 mm, decreased linearly with solids concentration. Low solids loadings as well as large diameter particles significantly increased kL and a, respectively, as compared to the two-phase system.

    Notes: The reactor synthesis problem can simply be stated as follows: Given the reaction mechanism and kinetics, what is the optimum type and arrangement of the reactor(s) that would maximize product yield? Extensive studies for simple reaction systems (series, parallel, consecutive, etc.) using idealized plug flow and continuous stirred tank reactors have been presented in the literature. However, these studies fail to provide a systematic procedure for selecting the reactor(s) type and the rangement for complex reaction schemes.In this paper simple rules with geometrical interpretations have been developed for synthesizing isothermal reactor configurations for complex reaction schemes. A computer program capable of specifying the optimum reactor structure from a generalized configuration has also been described.

    Notes: It is shown that the conventional Smith dead-time compensator can be modified in a fashion which leads to significant improvements in its regulatory capabilities for measurable disturbances or inputs. The proposed modification utilizes effectively the existing prediction capabilities of the conventional dead-time compensator and eliminates the need for a separate feedforward controller in many circumstances under which it is normally employed. The modified dead-time compensator possesses simultaneous feedforward and feedback actions. An additional tuning parameter which controls the degree of dead-time cancellation allows the designer to shape the response according to requirements. Illustrative examples show the advantages of the modified scheme.

    Notes: An analysis of dispersion arising from creeping flow through a periodically constricted tube is developed with the goal of evaluating the effect of converging and diverging pore structure on dispersion in porous media. The theory is based on rigorous long-time solutions of the convective-diffusion equation. The calculations are done numerically over a range of Peclet numbers and tube geometries; for the geometrical parameters which correlate permeability data in packed beds, the results of the present work agree well with literature data for dispersion in such beds.

    Notes: The electroreduction of nitrobenzene in deoxygenated acid solution generates predominantly either p-aminophenol or aniline via the common electrochemically generated intermediate, phenylhydroxylamine. Square wave current control increases the reaction selectivity for p-aminophenol, which is produced in a chemical pathway from the intermediate over that obtained at the average current of the oscillation. Data collected under electrokinetic-controlled reaction conditions on a planar copper electrode in a water-propanol-sulfuric acid medium show an order of magnitude increase in selectivity at 100 Hz over that measured at the average direct current. The electrode is depolarized under periodic current control which results in lower rates of undesired electrochemical reactions with a consequential increase in chemical product selectivity. Implications and limitations of periodic electrochemical reaction rate control are discussed.

    Notes: The generalized relationships of Lee and Kesler for the thermodynamic properties of nonpolar fluids have been combined with an accurate equation of state for water which is utilized as the reference substance for polar fluids for reduced temperatures from 0.4 to 2.5 and reduced pressures to 10. The input data required are the critical temperature, critical pressure, acentric factor, and a polarity factor Y obtained from experimental pressure-volume-temperature data. Comparisons between calculated and experimental thermodynamic properties indicate that highly accurate results are obtained by the method of this study for most polar fluids. A modified procedure is presented for the compressibility factors of substances with large acentric factors such as alcohols. Tabulated values of the polar fluid correction terms are presented for the compressibility factor, fugacity coefficient, and enthalpy, entropy, and heat capacity departures for the complete range investigated.

    Notes: The surface rejuvenation model of the turbulent burst process, already developed for the momentum and heat transfer processes, is applied to the field of mass transfer. The range of applicability of the theory, previously shown to be valid for the Prandtl number range 0.7 to 64 is extended to Schmidt numbers of 6,500 without introducing any new parameters. Concentration and temperature profiles for high Schmidt and Prandtl numbers are in agreement with experimental data. Theoretical expressions for Sherwood and Stanton numbers are calculated and shown to be in agreement with experimental data over five orders of magnitude.

    Notes: Effluent concentration profiles from high performance displacement chromatography were calculated by using the theory of equilibrium chromatography of Helfferich and Klein (1970). The close agreement between predictions of the theory neglecting mass transfer resistances and experimental results demonstrates that conditions close to ideal chromatography are attainable in HPLC. Individual adsorption isotherms, as measured by frontal development, closely followed Langmuirian behavior.

    Notes: The simultaneous diffusion and adsorption of water vapor into specially prepared silica gel and activated carbon desiccants was experimentally studied for laminar flow through an isothermally maintained parallel-plate channel. The equilibrium characteristics and tortuosities of the various desiccant sheets used were experimentally determined.The data were compared with a modified Rosen model. The Rosen model predicts outlet concentrations from the knowledge of adsorption equilibrium constants, diffusion, and mass transfer coefficients. A comparison of computed and measured concentrations as a function of sorption time shows that with independently measured equilibrium and effective diffusion coefficients, the modified Rosen model became completely predictive.

    Notes: Growth of potassium alum crystals was characterized by the advance rates of crystals on the leading edge of population distributions and by the advance rates of the modes of these distributions. Growth rates of crystals on the leading edge appeared to follow size-dependent kinetics, but the observed spread of the distribution about the average size was much greater than would be expected from size-dependent growth alone. The spread of the distribution was correlated with the extent of growth determined from the net advance of the average crystal size. These quantitative and qualitative results show that what has often been referred to as size-dependent growth is in fact a manifestation of growth rate dispersion.

    Notes: Hydrodynamic characteristics were investigated in a cocurrent gas-liquid-solid fluidized bed containing a binary mixture of particles. The binary mixtures used were ten combinations of eight types of spherical particles differing in diameter and/or density. The density variation of the particles in the mixture was found to exhibit a stronger effect on the extent of solids mixing or segregation than did the size variation of the particles in the mixture. Additionally, a solids layer inversion phenomenon was found to occur in a bed of small, heavy alumina beads and large, lighter glass beads. The minimum fluidization velocity of binary mixtures correlated well empirically with the superficial gas velocity, weight fraction of jetsam particles, and particle terminal velocities of jetsam and flotsam particles. Bed expansion and gas holdup for a binary mixture were analyzed for three solids mixing states, namely, complete segregation, partial intermixing, and complete intermixing. The analysis indicates that the serial model, or segregation model, predicts the bed voidage satisfactorily even when the bed is at the complete intermixing state.

    Notes: A strategy for synthesizing regulatory control structures is developed within the framework provided by singular value decomposition (SVD). Quantitative measures of interaction and sensitivity for the nodes, as well as for the entire system, are established with this method. The approach enables analysis of the control struture over a range of frequencies which are of practical importance for a particular processing unit, thus insuring that both static and dynamic effects are encompassed. In addition, this method allows the designer to identify the modeling aspects which are important in determining the performance of the synthesized control structures. A series of examples, presented in order of increasing complexity, demonstrate the usefulness and versatility of this procedure. The technique is implemented as an interactive computer package.

    Notes: Previous papers (Trogus et al., 1979a; Harwell et al., 1982) have developed a theory of surfactant chromatographic movement on the assumption that micelles may be treated as a separate thermodynamic phase in predicting surfactant adsorption. The work examined here demonstrates that, even with incorporation of the complex surface interactions between surfactant molecules that are present in real systems, conclusions and observations made in the previous studies hold true. Additionally, theoretical predictions are compared to experimental results to demonstrate that for the system studied the phase separation model of micelle formation (Shinoda, 1963) and the plateau adsorption model (Trogus et al., 1979a) are powerful and useful simplifications for predicting surfactant chromatographic behavior.

    Notes: A nonequilibrium stage model of countercurrent separation processes is used to predict composition and temperature profiles during binary and multicomponent distillation in wetted-wall and bubble-cap-tray columns. The profiles predicted by the model are compared with experimental data for the binary systems benzene-toluene, ethanol-water, and acetone-chloroform and for the ternary systems benzene-toluene-ethylbenzene, acetone-methanol-water, methanol-isopropanol-water, acetone-methanol-ethanol, and benzene-toluene-m-xylene. The model does a very commendable job of predicting the composition profiles measured for these systems; average absolute differences between predicted and measured mole fractions are seldom greater than 4 mole percent and are often very much less.

    Notes: Measurements of solids motion in a fluidized bed have been made in a computer-aided particle tracking facility. A radioactive tracer particle, dynamically identical to the solid particles to be studied, was mixed with the solids in the bed. The gamma radiation from the tracer was continuously monitored by a large number of scintillation detectors located around the bed, providing information on the tracer's instantaneous location. Prudent use was made of the purposely introduced redundant distance data to achieve improved accuracy. The recognition of the existence of secondary emission due to the interaction of the primary radiation and other system materials and the subsequent devising of a scheme to mitigate its effect contribute much to the success. Results for a bed with a uniform air distributor plate show the existence of two counter-rotating toroidal vortices whose relative sizes and strengths vary with the fluidizing velocity. Fluctuating motions at low frequencies ranging from 1.6 to 16 Hz have been observed at various locations in the bed.

    Notes: A method was developed for calculating the distributions of weight loss and temperature of spent activated carbon in a moving-bed regenerator in which the solid flow was regarded as being plug flow. A kinetic model developed earlier, which was based on regeneration consisting of many first-order reactions each with different frequency factors and different activation energies, was successfully applied to a design method for the regenerator. The flow pattern of the solid particles and heat transfer characteristics in a small moving bed were clarified experimentally, and the information obtained was used to calculate the distributions of weight loss of the spent carbon and temperature in the moving-bed regenerator by means of the design method. The calculated results were in fairly good agreement with the experimental data obtained in a small moving-bed regenerator. The adsorption capacity of the regenerated carbon was comparable to or greater than that of the virigin carbon.

    Notes: A model reduction technique based upon modal analysis is presented for modeling the dynamics of general, large equilibrium staged cascades encountered in chemical processes. The analysis is general enough to encompass quite complex cascades involving multiple fee and/or product streams with nonideal thermodynamic behavior. The low-order models proposed have a number of desirable features: the state variables have physical significance and model parameters are clearly related to the fundamental process parameters which are easily obtainable from steady-state plant data. Quantitatively it is shown that the low-order models proposed are in excellent agreement with the complete (high-order) dynamic models on a range of problems some of which involve complex, nonideal cascades.

    Notes: When a small drop or bubble approaches a fluid-fluid interface, a thin liquid film forms between them and begins to drain. As the thickness of the draining film become sufficiently small [about 1,000 Å (100 nm)], the effects of the London-van der Waals forces and of the repulsive force of any electrostatic double layer become important. Lin and Slattery (1982b) developed a hydrodynamic theory for the first portion of the coalescence process: the drainage of the thin liquid film while it is sufficiently thick that the effects of London-van der Waals forces and of electrostatic forces can be ignored. Here the effect of the London-van der Waals forces are included. Given only the drop radius and the required physical properties, the configuration of the film as a function of time is predicted. For the case of a negative disjoining pressure, it is possible to estimate an upper bound for the coalescence time or the time during which a small drop or bubble appears to rest at a phase interface before it coalesces under the influence of London-van der Waals forces.

    Notes: Rates of oxygen absorption from turbulent air by a concurrently flowing liquid film were measured in an enclosed 2.54 cm × 30.5 cm rectangular channel. The effect of liquid viscosity is varied by using water and a water-glycerine solution. The results are interpreted by arguing that flow fluctuations in the liquid that control mass transfer are associated with waves of small wavelength at the interface.

    Notes: A method is described to obtain reaction rates of chemical reactions in a network in which there are more independent reactions thatn independent chemical species. The method makes use of the linear theory of nonequilibrium thermodynamics to obtain the equilibrium exchange rates of the reactions, which are calculated from the relaxation data as the system approaches chemical equilibrium. A method which follows very closely that of Wei and Prater (1962) can be used to treat the relaxation data. As an example, the method was applied to the methanol synthesis reaction from CO, CO2, and H2 over a Cu-Zn oxide catalyst. It was concluded that successful application of the method is limited to systems in which all the processes contributing to the observed relaxation are known, in addition to the common limitations due to noise in experimental measurements.

    Notes: A compound drop composed of viscous Newtonian core and shell fluids is disturbed away from its motionless spherical state. The physical characteristics of the drop determine the decay rates of any disturbance. This damping process is accompanied by out-of-phase displacements of the two interfaces. Special limiting cases of a thin and thick shell are investigated.

    Notes: Catalytic oxidation of CO on alumina-supported platinum was studied in a tubular isothermal reactor with applied concentration transients. A completely automated reactor system capable of switching frequencies as high as 0.2 Hz was constructed.Concentration cycling resulted in reaction rates that were much higher than the maximum rate achievable at steady-state operation. Mapping of the time-averaged carbon dioxide production rate in the time-period duty-fraction plane, resulted in a unique global maximum. We find that the maximum in rate occurs when the switching times are comparable to the characteristic time of the surface reaction. Results of our experiments also rule out significant contribution from the Eley-Rideal mechanism at the temperature range of this work (below 120°C).

    Notes: The recent random-pore model (Bhatia and Perlmutter, 1980, 1981a; Gavalas, 1980) is further developed to account for distributed pore reaction in gas-solid systems. Numerical solutions for the resulting equations are presented for the case when the reaction is accompanied by an increase in volume of the solid phase. It is shown that in such situations pore closure begins with the smaller pores and progresses to the larger ones. For certain pore size distributions seemingly incomplete conversion is found even when sufficient initial porosity exists so that complete pore closure cannot occur.

    Notes: Procedures for the numerical computation of an index for operational flexibility in chemical processes are considered. Two types of algorithms are proposed which rely on the assumption that critical points for feasible operation lie at vertices or extreme values of the uncertain parameters. The first algorithm is a direct search procedure that features a heuristic variant to avoid exhaustive enumeration of all vertices. The second algorithm employs an implicit enumeration scheme based on a lower bound for monotonic constraints. These algorithms are applied to several example problems to demonstrate both the use of the flexibility index in process design and the computational efficiency of the algorithms.

    Notes: The performance of a two-phase liquid-liquid continuous flow stirred tank reactor (CFSTR) was evaluated experimentally by simultaneous determination of dispersed phase drop size distribution and extraction efficienty as a function of reactor operating conditions. The results provided a basis against which predictions made by a previously developed simulation technique (Bapat et al., 1984) were compared. The close agreement between the experimental and the simulation results validates the drop rate models and the simulation algorithm employed in this work.

    Notes: The population balance equation with respect to ice crystal size in a batch crystallizer was solved, taking into account the crystal size dependency of growth rate, and the temperature change with crystal growth was calculated. Both the temperature change and the crystal size distribution obtained theoretically were in fairly good agreement with the experimental factors measured in pure water and in a 5% dextran solution.

    Notes: A scheme of on-line optimizing control is presented for a nonadiabatic fixed bed reactor which experiences a highly exothermic reaction. The control scheme has been devised to perform adaptive control of bed temperature and on-line steady state optimization simultaneously.Experiments were conducted with a pilot scale fixed bed reactor where partial oxidation of n-butane to maleic anhydride occurs. The reactor system was interfaced with a microcomputer for real-time control and optimization. With an objective function consisting of a net profit by producing maleic anhydride plus a penalty term on high bed temperature, it was clearly shown that the reaction conditions were driven to the expected optimum region.

    Notes: A quantitative criterion for the selection of simple distillation sequences is derived for ideal mixtures. A simple cost model, along with a short-cut solution of Underwood's equations, gives an analytical form for the total vapor rate, which is the key design variable. The results for column sequencing that are based on the analytical criterion agree well with more exact solutions, but they indicate that in numerous situations the commonly accepted heuristics are incorrect.
