    Notes: A concurrent algorithm for the solution óf the Navier-Stokes equations expressed in curvilinear co-ordinates has been developed for execution on a distributed memory parallel computer. This algorithm offers the ultimate promise of near-supercomputer performance on relatively low-cost parallel computers. The new algorithm is based on an existing serial pressure-correction-based algorithm, and uses domain decomposition to partition the problem onto the processors. The algorithm is demonstrated on an Intel iPSC for a complicated two-dimensional laminar flow problem, for various grid sizes and numbers of processors. Initial results based on straightforward domain decomposition showed that the speed-up per iteration approached 100% parallel efficiency as the grid size was increased, but that the convergence rate of the algorithm deteriorated relative to the original serial algorithm as the number of processors was increased, limiting the speed-up achieved. This degradation in convergence rate was traced to a poorer solution of the pressure correction equation in the concurrent procedure. The addition of a global block correction procedure, implemented via efficient global communications routines, remedied this problem, making the convergence rate of the concurrent procedure equivalent to the serial algorithm. The maximum speed-up achieved with the revised concurrent algorithm was a factor of 12·3 with 16 processors, representing a parallel efficiency of 77%.

    Notes: A series of numerical experiments on the Cray XMP/48 and on the Cray 2 investigate the robustness and economy of direct and unsymmetric conjugate gradient (CG) type methods for the solution of matrix systems arising from a 3D FEM discretization of fluid flow problems. Computations on a Boussinesq flow model problem with either ILU preconditioned or unpreconditioned unsymmetric CG methods are presented. Such experiments seem to indicate that the unpreconditioned BICG method is robust for moderately non-linear incompressible Navier-Stokes FEM discretizations and that the ILU preconditioned BICG method is very robust and more economic than an unsymmetric frontal solver when the generous memory of the Cray 2 is exploited to store both the matrix and its preconditioner. We cover some of the programming aspects of direct and iterative methods on a supercomputer and find that direct methods have advantages: the crucial CPU-consuming area of code is compact but overwhelming, and its percentage of total CPU usage is independent of the spectral properties of the matrix involved. An optimal implementation of the unsymmetric CG method is more difficult because its work is related to the spectral distribution of the matrix considered and because there is no single portion of the code that overwhelmingly dominates the CPU usuage.

    Notes: A mixed spectral finite element scheme for the implementation of a design method for turbomachinery blading in three-dimensional subcritical compressible flow is presented. The method gives the detailed blade shape that would produce a prescribed tangential mean swirl schedule, given the hub and shroud profiles, the number of blades and their stacking position. After a presentation of the mathematical formulation of the design theory, the current numerical approach is described. It is then applied to the design of blading for radial inflow turbine impellers in three-dimensional flow.

    Notes: This paper presents a control-volume-based finite difference method in non-orthogonal curvilinear coordinates on a local basis in which the vectors and tensors are all based on the general curvilinear coordinates for buoyant flow calculations in arbitrary three-dimensional geometries. The governing equations are transformed from Cartesian co-ordinates into generalized curvilinear co-ordinates. After integrating the set of equations for the control volumes, the finite difference equations are then formulated by a proper treatment of the heat flux and stress tensors and by incorporating the QUICK scheme for the convective terms. The solution procedure then follows the one for three-dimensional Cartesian co-ordinates.Examples are given in problems of natural convection in such three-dimensional enclosures as parallelepiped enclosures and horizontal closed cylinders with differentially heated ends. In the latter case, important applications have been found in crystal growth by means of chemical vapour deposition in a cylindrical ampoule, in which uniform heat fluxes along the two ends are required in order to produce high-quality crystals. Special attention is given to the insertion of baffles in the cylinder to improve the recirculating flow patterns near the two ends.

    Notes: In this paper a least-squares formulation associated with a conjugate gradient algorithm is proposed for the solution of transport problems. In this procedure the advection-diffusion equation is first discretized in time using an implicit scheme. At each time step the resulting partial differential equation is replaced by an optimal control problem. This minimization problem involves the minimization of a functional defined via a state equation. This functional is chosen in order to force the numerical solution of the advection-diffusion equation to be equal to the hyperbolic advective part of this equation. The effectiveness of the method is shown through a one-dimensional example involving advective and diffusive transport. No oscillation and high accuracy have been obtained for the entire range of Peclet numbers with a Courant number well in excess of unity.

    Notes: A moving finite element algorithm has been compared against the upwind-differencing and Smolarkiewicz methods for the population balance equation of multicomponent particle growth processes. Analytical solutions and an error function have been used to test the numerical methods. The moving finite elements technique is much more accurate than other methods for a wide range of parameters. Since this method uses moving grids, it is able to model very narrow particle size distributions. It is also shown that the method can be extended to solve condensational growth problems which include particle curvature and non-continuum mass transfer effects.

    Notes: A new iterative algorithm for the solution of the three-dimensional Navier-Stokes equations by the finite element method is presented. This algorithm is based on a combination of the Uzawa and the Arrow-Hurwicz algorithms and uses a preconditioning technique to enhance convergence. Numerical tests are presented for the cubic cavity problem with two elements, namely the linear brick Q1-P0 and the enriched linear brick Q1+ - P1. It is shown that the proposed methodology is optimal with the enriched element and that the CPU time varies as NEQ1·44, where NEQ is the number of equations.

    Notes: The flow over a flat plate delta wing at incidence and in sideslip is studied using vortex lattice models based on streamwise penelling. For the attached flow problem the effect of sideslip is simulated by modifying the standard vortex lattice model for zero sideslip by aligning the trailing vortices aft of the wing along the resultant flow direction. For the separated flow problem a non-linear vortex lattice model is developed for both zero and non-zero sideslip angles in which the shape and position of the leading edge separation vortices are calculated by an iterative procedure starting from an assumed initial shape. The theoretical values are compared with available theoretical and experimental results.

    Notes: There are two methods of using the magnetic vector potential for three-dimensional eddy current calculations. The first method uses the continuous magnetic vector potential which accompanies a scalar potential and has the advantage that no cutting is necessary for the multiply connected region problem. The second method uses the discontinuous magnetic vector potential which accompanies no scalar potential and has the disadvantage that cutting is necessary for the multiply connected region problem. In this paper a formulation using the continuous magnetic vector potential and accompanying scalar potential is given, together with computed results for three three-dimensional multiply connected eddy current problems.

    Notes: Different finite element schemes are investigated with respect to their application in numerical weather prediction. Different methods of staggering of variables are considered. The tests concern the accuracy of a Rossby wave prediction and the generation of noise in a geostrophic adjustment process. Theoretical results concerning the noise level of different schemes are confirmed by computations with a one-dimensional model. Favourable results were obtained by hybrid schemes, using different Galerkin treatments for different terms of the dynamic equations.

    Notes: A class of shock-capturing Petrov-Galerkin finite element methods that use high-order non-oscillatory interpolations is presented for the one-dimensional compressible Euler equations. Modified eigenvalues which employ total variation diminishing (TVD), total variation bounded (TVB) and essentially non-oscillatory (ENO) mechanisms are introduced into the weighting functions. A one-pass Euler explicit transient algorithm with lumped mass matrix is used to integrate the equations. Numerical experiments with Burgers' equation, the Riemann problem and the two-blast-wave interaction problem are presented. Results indicate that accurate solutions in smooth regions and sharp and non-oscillatory solutions at discontinuities are obtainable even for strong shocks.

    Notes: A Fourier analysis was performed in order to study the numerical characteristics of the effective Eulerian-Lagrangian least squares collocation (ELLESCO) method. As applied to the transport equation, ELLESCO requires a C1-continuous trial space and has two degrees of freedom per node. Two coupled discrete equations are generated for a typical interior node for a one-dimensional problem. Each degree of freedom is expanded separately in a Fourier series and is substituted into the discrete equations to form a homogeneous matrix equation. The required singularity of the system matrix leads to a ‘physical’ amplification factor that characterizes the numerical propagation of the initial conditions and a ‘computational’ one that can affect stability.Unconditional stability for time-stepping weights greater than or equal to 0-5 is demonstrated. With advection only, ELLESCO accurately propagates spatial wavelengths down to 2Δx. As the dimensionless dispersion number becomes large, implicit formulations accurately propagate the phase, but the higher-wave-number components are underdamped. At large dispersion numbers, phase errors combined with underdamping cause oscillations in Crank-Nicolson solutions. These effects lead to limits on the temporal discretization when dispersion is present. Increases in the number of collocation points per element improve the spectral behaviour of ELLESCO.

    Notes: A review of our solution techniques for the vorticity-streamfunction formulation of two-dimensional incompressible flows is presented. While both the viscous and inviscid cases are considered, the derivation of the proper finite element formulations for multiply connected domains is emphasized. In all formulations associated with the vorticity transport equation, the streamline upwind/Petrov-Galerkin method is used. The adaptive implicit-explicit and grouped element-by-element solution strategies are employed to maximize the computational efficiency. The solutions obtained in all test cases compare well with solutions from previously published investigations. The convergence and benchmark studies performed in this paper show that the solution techniques presented are accurate, reliable and efficient.

    Notes: Three adaptive finite element methods based on equidistribution, elliptic grid generation and hybrid techniques are used to study a system of reaction-diffusion equations. It is shown that these techniques must employ sub-equidistributing meshes in order to avoid ill-conditioned matrices and ensure the convergence of the Newton method. It is also shown that elliptic grid generation methods require much longer computer times than hybrid and static rezoning procedures. The paper also includes characteristic, Petrov-Galerkin and flux-corrected transport algorithms which are used to study a linear convection-reaction-diffusion equation that has an analytical solution. The flux-corrected transport technique yields monotonic solutions in good agreement with the analytical solution, whereas the Petrov-Galerkin method with quadratic upstream-weighted functions results in very diffused temperature profiles. The characteristic finite element method which uses a Lagrangian-Eulerian formulation overpredicts the flame front location and exhibits overshoots and undershoots near the temperature discontinuity. These overshoots and undershoots are due to the interpolation of the results of the Lagrangian operator onto the fixed Eulerian grid used to solve the reaction-diffusion operator, and indicate that characteristic finite element methods are not able to eliminate numerical diffusion entirely.

    Notes: The transient two-dimensional Navier-Stokes and energy equations have been solved numerically for flow in a horizontal channel heated from below in the Boussinesq limit. For the set of dimensionless parameters chosen, the flow consists of periodic transverse travelling waves resulting from a convective instability. The solution is proposed as a benchmark for the application of outflow boundary conditions (OBC) in time-dependent flows with strong buoyancy effects. Richardson extrapolation in both time and space is used in obtaining the solution. Field plots and profiles of velocity, temperature, vorticity and streamfunction at selected axial positions and times are also presented from the finest grid and smallest time step calculation. The calculations have been made on an extended domain so that the effects of OBC used in the present study would be negligible in the test region.

    Notes: In computational fluid dynamics, non-linear differential equations are essential to represent important effects such as shock waves in transonic flow. Discretized versions of these non-linear equations are solved using iterative methods. In this paper an inexact Newton method using the GMRES algorithm of Saad and Schultz is examined in the context of the full potential equation of aerodynamics. In this setting, reliable and efficient convergence of Newton methods is difficult to achieve. A poor initial solution guess often leads to divergence or very slow convergence. This paper examines several possible solutions to these problems, including a standard local damping strategy for Newton's method and two continuation methods, one of which utilizes interpolation from a coarse grid solution to obtain the initial guess on a finer grid. It is shown that the continuation methods can be used to augment the local damping strategy to achieve convergence for difficult transonic flow problems. These include simple wings with shock waves as well as problems involving engine power effects. These latter cases are modelled using the assumption that each exhaust plume is isentropic but has a different total pressure and/or temperature than the freestream.

    Notes: To predict the unsteady convected gust aerodynamic response of a cascade comprised of arbitrary thick and cambered aerofoils in an incompressible, inviscid, flow field, a complete first-order model is formulated. The flow is analysed by considering a periodic flow channel. The velocity potential is separated into steady and unsteady harmonic components, each described by a Laplace equation. The strong dependence of the unsteady aerodynamics on the steady effects of aerofoil and cascade geometry and incidence angle is manifested in the coupling of the unsteady and steady flow fields through the unsteady boundary conditions. Analytical solutions in individual grid elements of a body-fitted computational grid are then determined, with the complete solution obtained by assembly of these local solutions. The validity and capabilities of this model and solution technique are then demonstrated by analysing the steady and unsteady aerodynamics of both theoretical and experimental cascade configurations.

    Notes: The goal of this research was to determine whether there is any interaction between the type of constitutive equation used and the degree of mesh refinement, as well as how the type of constitutive equation might affect the convergence and quality of the solution, for a planar 4:1 contraction in the finite eiement method. Five constitutive equations were used in this work: the Phan-Thien-Tanner (PTT), Johnson-Segalman (JS), White-Metzner (WM), Leonov-like and upper convected Maxwell (UCM) models. A penalty Galerkin finite element technique was used to solve the system of non-linear differential equations. The constitutive equations were fitted to the steady shear viscosity and normal stress data for a polystyrene melt. In general it was found that the convergence limit based on the Deborah number De and the Weissenberg number We varied from model to model and from mesh to mesh. From a practical point of view it was observed that the wall shear stress in the downstream region should also be indicated at the point where convergence is lost, since this parameter reflects the throughput conditions. Because of the dependence of convergence on the combination of mesh size and constitutive equation, predictions of the computations were compared with birefringence data obtained for the same polystyrene melt flowing through a 4:1 planar contraction. Refinement in the mesh led to better agreement between the predictions using the PTT model and flow birefringence, but the oscillations became worse in the corner region as the mesh was further refined, eventually leading to the loss of convergence of the numerical algorithm. In comparing results using different models at the same wall shear stress conditions and on the same mesh, it was found that the PTT model gave less overshoot of the stresses at the re-entrant corner. Away from the corner there were very small differences between the quality of the solutions obtained using different models. All the models predicted solutions with oscillations. However, the values of the solutions oscillated around the experimental birefringence data, even when the numerical algorithm would not converge. Whereas the stresses are predicted to oscillate, the streamlines and velocity field remained smooth. Predictions for the existence of vortices as well as for the entrance pressure loss (ΔPent) varied from model to model. The UCM and WM models predicted negative values for ΔPent.

    Notes: A theory is presented for unsteady two-dimensional potential transonic flow in cascades of compressor and turbine blades using a mesh of triangular finite elements. The theory leads to a computer program, FINSUP, which is fast and has moderate storage requirements, so that it can be run on a personal computer. Comparisons with other theories in special cases show that the program is accurate in subsonic flow, and that in supersonic flow, although the wave effects are smeared by the numerical process, the results for overall blade force and moment have acceptable accuracy. The program is useful for engineering assessment of unstalled flutter of actual compressor and turbine blades.

The Boussinesq approximation is used, and the resulting linear stability problem is solved using Galerkin's technique. The analysis considers various types of fluid mixtures, ranging from gases to liquid metals, in cylinders with a variety of radius-to-height ratios. The flow structure is found to depend strongly on both the cylinder aspect ratio and the magnitude of the Soret effect. Comparisons are made with experiments and other theories, and the predicted stability limits are shown to agree closely with observations.

    Notes: Some finite element approximations of incompressible flows, such as those obtained with the bilinear velocity-constant pressure element (Q1-P0), are well known to be unstable in pressure while providing reasonable results for the velocity.We shall see that there exists a subspace of piecewise constant pressures that leads to a stable approximation. The main drawback associated with this subspace is the necessity of assembling groups of elements, the so-called ‘macro-elements’, which increases dramatically the bandwidth of the system.We study a variant of Uzawa's method which enables us to work in the desired subspace without increasing the bandwidth of the system. Numerical results show that this method is efficient and can be made to work at a low extra cost. The method can easily be generalized to other problems and is very attractive in three-dimensional cases.

    Notes: A new finite volume (FV) approach with adaptive upwind convection is used to predict the two-dimensional unsteady flow in a square cavity. The fluid is air and natural convection is induced by differentially heated vertical walls. The formulation is made in terms of the vorticity and the integral velocity (induction) law. Biquadratic interpolation formulae are used to approximate the temperature and vorticity fields over the finite volumes, to which the conservation laws are applied in integral form. Image vorticity is used to enforce the zero-penetration condition at the cavity walls. Unsteady predictions are carried sufficiently forward in time to reach a steady state. Results are presented for a Prandtl number (Pr) of 0-71 and Rayleigh numbers equal to 103, 104 and 105. Both 11 × 11 and 21 × 21 meshes are used. The steady state predictions are compared with published results obtained using a finite difference (FD) scheme for the same values of Pr and Ra and the same meshes, as well as a numerical bench-mark solution. For the most part the FV predictions are closer to the bench-mark solution than are the FD predictions.

    Notes: A discretization method is presented for the full, steady, compressible Navier-Stokes equations. The method makes use of quadrilateral finite volumes and consists of an upwind discretization of the convective part and a central discretization of the diffusive part. In the present paper the emphasis lies on the discretization of the convective part. The solution method applied solves the steady equations directly by means of a non-linear relaxation method accelerated by multigrid. The solution method requires the discretization to be continuously differentiable. For two upwind schemes which satisfy this requirement (Osher's and van Leer's scheme), results of a quantitative error analysis are presented. Osher's scheme appears to be increasingly more accurate than van Leer's scheme with increasing Reynolds number. A suitable higher-order accurate discretization of the convection terms is derived. On the basis of this higher-order scheme, to preserve monotonicity, a new limiter is constructed. Numerical results are presented for a subsonic flat plate flow and a supersonic flat plate flow with oblique shock wave-boundary layer interaction. The results obtained agree with the predictions made. Useful properties of the discretization method are that it allows an easy check of false diffusion and that it needs no tuning of parameters.

    Notes: This paper describes a numerical method for the study of combined natural convection and radiation in a rectangular, two-dimensional cavity containing a non-participating (i.e. transparent) fluid.One wall of the cavity is isothermal, being heated either by solar radiation or independently. The opposite wall is partially transparent, permitting radiation exchanges between the cavity and its surroundings and/or the Sun; that wall also exchanges heat by convection from its external surface to the surroundings. The other two walls are adiabatic: convection and radiation there are balanced, so that there is no heat transfer through those walls.The equations of motion and energy are solved by finite difference methods. Coupled to these equations are the radiative flux boundary conditions which are used to determine the temperature distribution along the non-isothermal walls. A two-band radiation model has been employed.Results are presented for a square cavity with a vertical hot wall at 150 °C, the ambient at 20 °C and 104 ≤ Ra ≤ 3 × 105, in the absence of direct insolation. The effects on the flow and heat transfer in the cavity of radiation and external convection have been examined. More extensive results will be presented in subsequent papers.

    Notes: A boundary element method is proposed for studying periodic shallow water problems. The numerical model is based on the shallow water equation. The key feature of this method is that the boundary integral equations are derived using the weighted residual method and the fundamental solutions for shallow water wave problems are obtained by solving the simultaneous singular equations. The accuracy of this method is studied for the wave reflection problem in a rectangular tank. As a result of this test, it has been shown that the number of element divisions and the distribution of nodes are significant to the accuracy. For numerical examples of external problems, the wave diffraction problems due to single cylindrical, double cylindrical and plate obstructions are analysed and compared with the exact and other numerical solutions. Relatively accurate solutions are obtained.

    Notes: Three-dimensional incompressible laminar flow around a cube is investigated using the vorticity-vector potential formulation of the equations of motion. Numerical solutions to á semi-implicit finite difference approximation to the vorticity transport equation coupled to discrete Poisson equations for the scalar and vector potentials are obtained using an eight-colour SOR algorithm. Calculations are done at a range of Reynolds numbers from 10 to 100. The predicted drag and other flow characteristics are found to agree well with experimental results, including those from a cube drop experiment performed for the present study.

    Notes: A new finite element method, the Taylor-least-squares, is proposed to approximate the advection-dominated unsteady advection-diffusion equation. The new scheme is a direct generalization of the Taylor-Galerkin and least-squares finite element methods. Higher-order spatial derivatives in the new formulation necessitate higher-degree polynomials. Hermite cubic shape functions are used. Extensive comparisons with other methods in one dimension proved that the new scheme is a step forward in modelling this difficult problem. The method offers straightforward generalizations to higher dimensions without losing the accuracy demonstrated in one dimension, i.e. the method preserves the important property of the Taylor-Galerkin scheme of being free of numerical crosswind diffusion. Several numerical experiments were made in two dimensions and excellent results were obtained from the representative experiments.

    Notes: We describe an upwind finite element method aimed at numerically simulating the two-dimensional transonic flow of a reactive gaseous mixture. The method uses in particular a triangular finite element mesh, with an adaptive procedure based on mesh refinement by triangle division, and an upwind non-oscillatory scheme based on an approximate Riemann solver for the evaluation of the convective terms for all species.     Notes: The three-dimensional flow over a projectile has been computed using an implicit, approximately factored, partially flux-split algorithm. A simple composite grid scheme has been developed in which a single grid is partitioned into a series of smaller grids for applications which require an external large memory device such as the SSD of the CRAY X-MP/48 or multi-tasking. The accuracy and stability of the composite grid scheme have been tested by numerically simulating the flow over an ellipsoid at an angle of attack and comparing the solution with a single-grid solution. The flow field over a projectile at M = 0·96, 1·1 and 4° angle of attack has been computed using a fine grid and compared with experiment.

    Notes: Five numerical schemes are compared using convergence studies in the framework of the hydrostatic Sandia Ocean Modeling System (SOMS). Three resolutions are used, 40, 20 and 10 km, with respectively three, seven and 15 layers and time steps of 60, 30 and 15 min, so 15 convergence calculations are performed. The same geophysical prototype problem (exhibiting baroclinic instability in a statically stable environment) is used for all calculations.All five schemes are second-order-accurate in space, but those using four-point interpolations for the Coriolis and pressure gradient terms are shown to produce much more accurate results, with relatively little extra computation, than schemes using two-point interpolations.Convergence is also indicated with decreasing horizontal diffusivities of 107, 106, and 105 cm2s-1. Using 107 cm2s-1 diffusivities causes substantial damping of the dominant instabilities during the 30-day integrations performed, but using 106 cm2 s-1 results in little damping and yields results very close to those using 105 cm2 s-1.A barotropic (vertically averaged flow) cyclonic northern basin gyre is explained as a weakly forced circulation. Its equilibrium amplitude is determined by a balance between dissipation effects due to horizontal mixing and diffusion, and weak second-order driving associated with thermodynamic forcing and vorticity dissipation at the basin bottom. It is thus quite sensitive to model dissipation but can be well described by SOMS owing to SOMS' low numerical dissipation.

    Notes: The purpose of this paper is to examine the effects of using non-orthogonal boundary-fitted grids for the numerical solution of the shallow water equations. Two geometries with well known analytical solutions are introduced in order to investigate the accuracy of the numerical solutions. The results verify that a reasonable departure from orthogonality can be allowed when the rate of change of cell areas is kept sufficiently small (i.e. it is not necessary to create a strictly orthogonal grid when the grid is sufficiently smooth).

    Notes: The development of a calculation method to solve the compressible, three-dimensional, turbulent boundary layer equations is described. An implicit finite difference solution procedure is adopted involving local upwinding of convective transport terms. A consistent approach to discretization and linearization is taken by casting all equations in a similar form. The implementation of algebraic, one-equation and two-equation turbulence models is described. An initial validation of the method is made by comparing prediction with measurements in two quasi-three-dimensional boundary layer flows. Some of the more obvious deficiencies in current turbulence-modelling standards for three-dimensional flows are discussed.

    Notes: A finite volume multigrid procedure for the prediction of laminar natural convection flows is presented, enabling efficient and accurate calculations on very fine grids. The method is fully conservative and uses second-order central differencing for convection and diffusion fluxes. The calculations start on a coarse (typically 10 × 10 control volumes) grid and proceed to finer grids until the desired accuracy or maximum affordable storage is reached. The computing times increase thereby linearly with the number of control volumes.Solutions are presented for the flow in a closed cavity with side walls at different temperatures and insulated top and bottom walls. Rayleigh numbers of 104, 105 and 106 are considered. Grids as fine as 640 × 640 control volumes are used and the results are believed to be accurate to within 0-01%. Second-order monotonic convergence to grid-independent values is observed for all predicted quantities.

    Notes: The numerical solution of the flow in a stepped channel constricted to half its width has been obtained for Reynolds numbers up to 2000 using Newton's iteration to solve the ensuing algebraic system. In order to avoid high-frequency errors, a locally fine grid is effected near the corner by transformation of the independent variables. The results predict a downstream recirculation region, observed in experiments but not found in earlier numerical calculations. The inclusion of the Dennis-Hudson upwinding, added for stability in SOR methods, whilst giving the same characteristics of the flow, is less accurate by at least an order of magnitude.

    Notes: The advent of standard algorithms for the numerical solution of partial differential equations has given researchers a new tool for fluid flow calculations. In this paper, single-phase flow in curved ducts is numerically simulated by imposing a spatially varying centrifugal force on a fluid flowing in a straight tube. The resulting set of partial differential equations is solved using the HARWELL-FLOW3D computer program. Comparison with other numerical and experimental results shows that this simplified formulation gives accurate results. The model neglects certain geometric terms of the order d/D, the duct-to-coil diameter ratio. The effect of these terms is investigated by considering the flow in a 90° bend for large d/D. It is shown that while there may be significant error in the prediction of the local variables for large d/D, the circumference-averaged quantities are well predicted.

    Notes: A stable fast marching scheme has been developed for the solution of coupled parabolic partial differential equations such as the Navier-Stokes equations. The scheme was developed with the aid of a stability analysis. The implementation of the method in standard alternating direction implicit algorithms is straightforward.     Notes: Interactive vortex shedding in the multiply connected domain formed by a pair of circular cylinders is analysed by the FEM-FDM blending technique. The vorticity-streamfunction formulation is used to solve the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations at Re = 100, with the time-dependent wall streamfunctions determined from the pressure constraint condition and the far-field streamfunctions from the integral series formula developed earlier by the authors. The standard Galerkin finite element method is used in the relatively small FEM subdomain and the finite difference method based on the general co-ordinate system in the rest of the flow domain. Symmetric, antisymmetric and asymmetric wake patterns are obtained confirming the earlier experimental findings. The bistable nature of the asymmetric vortex shedding as well as the intermittent drifting from one status to the other between symmetric and antisymmetric wake patterns are reported.

The strategy applied in a previous work on vector Poisson equations is employed to reduce the vector fourth-order problem to a sequence of scalar biharmonic problems. A finite element aimed at the implementation of the method in a discrete version is considered. A conjugate gradient algorithm which is particularly efficient for the uncoupled solution method is also described.

    Notes: A Galerkin finite element method and two finite difference techniques of the control volume variety have been used to study magnetohydrodynamic channel flows as a function of the Reynolds number, interaction parameter, electrode length and wall conductivity. The finite element and finite difference formulations use unequally spaced grids to accurately resolve the flow field near the channel wall and electrode edges where steep flow gradients are expected. It is shown that the axial velocity profiles are distorted into M-shapes by the applied electromagnetic field and that the distortion increases as the Reynolds number, interaction parameter and electrode length are increased. It is also shown that the finite element method predicts larger electromagnetic pinch effects at the electrode entrance and exit and larger pressure rises along the electrodes than the primitive-variable and streamfunction-vorticity finite difference formulations. However, the primitive-variable formulation predicts steeper axial velocity gradients at the channel walls and lower axial velocities at the channel centreline than the streamfunction-vorticity finite difference and the finite element methods. The differences between the results of the finite difference and finite element methods are attributed to the different grids used in the calculations and to the methods used to evaluate the pressure field. In particular, the computation of the velocity field from the streamfunction-vorticity formulation introduces computational noise, which is somewhat smoothed out when the pressure field is calculated by integrating the Navier-Stokes equations. It is also shown that the wall electric potential increases as the wall conductivity increases and that, at sufficiently high interaction parameters, recirculation zones may be created at the channel centreline, whereas the flow near the wall may show jet-like characteristics.

    Notes: The simulation of the von Karman vortex street behind a circular cylinder has long been used as a benchmark problem to test the performance of numerical algorithms for solving the Navier-Stokes equations. It is particularly suited for comparing different numerical outflow boundary conditions since the computational domain must necessarily be terminated in the vortex street itself. This paper presents detailed numerical results of the flow past a cylinder at a Reynolds number of 100 on a very fine mesh which has been purposely designed to extend past the typically used dimensions.     Notes: The dynamic response of foundation is influenced by various mechanical properties of soil as well as the geometrical properties of the foundation. In this paper, the effects of Poisson's ratio and material damping, as well as the influences of aspect ratio and embedment depth on the dynamic stiffness of rectangular foundations are studied. Studies are also conducted to investigate the influence of the type of contact at the soil-foundation interface and the soil layer overlaying a half-space. These studies were conducted using an advanced algorithm of the boundary element method incorporating isoparameteric quadratic boundary elements. Higher-order elements (quadratic) were used since they can model the wavy nature of the dynamic problem accurately.

    Notes: A simplified analysis of the problem of horizontal soil stress changes around circular displacement piles, caused by pile placement, is presented. Pile installation is assumed to cause soil displacements in the horizontal direction only, thus yielding an axisymmetric problem. The soil surrounding the pile is modelled as a weightless non-linear elastic material. Material non-linearity is handled in a simplified manner by adopting secant shear moduli defined in terms of a proportionality coefficient and a softening factor. The resulting equilibrium equation is solved analytically and an expression is obtained which is also conveniently presented in graphical form. The derived expression can be used to estimate horizontal soil stress changes and is incorporated into a simple procedure to estimate the ultimate load or the efficiency of pile groups. Comparisons are made between efficiencies calculated according to this procedure and efficiencies measured in full-scale group load tests in sand.

    Notes: This paper presents an analytical solution of the permeability alteration problem around the wellbore. This alteration may be a permeability reduction due to drilling fluid invasion or mudcake formation around the wellbore. On the other hand, the alteration may be a permeability increase resulting from stimulation by acidizing the formation matrix around the well. This permeability discontinuity in a reservoir forms a composite reservoir system. With the composite model, both the degree and the radial extent of permeability alteration can be adequately predicted. The conventional skin concept is inadequate and physically unrealistic in most of these cases.This paper describes the application of an automatic weighted constrained least-squares parameter estimation technique and the analytical model for pressure transient analysis. The parameters of the composite reservoir system are determined from a match of the pressure transient data. The behaviour of the pressure transient in such composite systems is presented using the analytical solution.

    Notes: An analytical model which represents the behaviour of a reinforced rock mass near a circular underground opening in a homogeneous, uniform stress field has been developed. The theory adopts the concepts of elastoplasticity and considers a proper interaction mechanism between the ground and the grouted (or friction) bolts. It highlights the influence of the bolt pattern on the extent of the yield zone and tunnel deformation. A dimensionless parameter is introduced as a design tool which relates the tunnel convergence to the bolt spacing for a given bolt length. This publication contains the derivation of the analytical model and an illustration of the effect of bolts on the stress and displacement field near an opening. Its application to tunnel design is discussed briefly. The verification of the theory by laboratory simulation and field measurements will be presented, in detail, in a future publication.

    Notes: The displacement formulation of the finite element method is well suited to the analysis of elasto-plasticity problems involving compressible material behaviour, but it is well known that numerical difficulties occur when the material is incompressible or nearly incompressible. The effect of these additional constraints depends on both element formulation and mesh topology. A two-dimensional plane strain finite element formulation suitable for the solution of problems involving large strains and displacements (but small rotations) based on the isoparametric approach is described. The kinematics of deformation are defined in terms of the Eulerian strain rates that are invariably used in small strain analysis; the formulation therefore retains some of the character of small strain theory but includes additional geometrically non-linear terms. The results of a series of plane strain finite element analyses of two cylindrical expansion problems are presented. These results confirm the previously observed trend that as Poisson's ratio approaches 0·5 then the quality of the calculated stress deteriorates. The study also indicates that the solution quality depends increasingly on mesh topology as perfect incompressibility is reached.

It is found that increases in pore-fluid pressure due to heat-induced expansion may act to enhance creep rates and possibly lead to total loss of stability.     Notes: A mathematical model treating the compaction of sediments in geological basins is derived. The model is based on the principle of conservation of mass and energy, and gives a consistent and complete set of equations for compaction, pressure and temperature history of sedimentary basins.Further, the paper describes a numerical model based on the mathematical equations, derived by using the finite element method. This derivation starts with the time-discretized versions of the conservation laws of mass and energy. The result is the time-discretized equations for pressure and temperature. The numerical derivation is parallel with the mathematical deductions. By integrating these time-discretized equations spatially the element equations are obtained. Hence, the element equations are derived directly from the underlying physical laws. This approach to developing element equations in a compacting medium is believed to be new. The model has been tested successfully on some geological basins, and the results of a simulation are included at the end of the paper.

    Notes: A simple hyperbolic function is often used to illustrate typical stress-strain behaviour of geomaterials during monotonic loading. This approach has the disadvantage that the failure condition is approached asymptotically, whereas in reality failure must occur at a finite value of strain.     Notes: The dynamic response of an inhomogeneous, linear-elastic half-space to a time-harmonic vertical line load on its surface is studied. The mass density and the Poisson's ratio are assumed to be constant and the shear modulus to increase continuously with depth according to a function which is bounded at infinity. This model can describe a wide range of uniformly deposited soil strata. Analytical solutions for the displacement field at the surface are obtained using the classical contour integration method by means of the residue theorem. The dependence of the displacement field on distance from the source, frequency and shear modulus variation is examined as well as the relative contribution of the higher surface wave vibration modes to the total displacement.

    Notes: A number of variational principles are established in this paper for the stress analysis of porous media with compressible constituents. A three-dimensional finite element method is proposed based on the variational principle. The finite element method thus established is applied to the study of the temperature, deformation and flow field associated with the water-flood technique in secondary recovery projects for oil exploration. In the study model, the layout of injection wells and production wells is considered to have a regular pattern where symmetry conditions exist. The injection fluid diffuses slowly into the formation through a vertical crack which is initially generated by an explosion. The problem is analysed by a plane strain formulation with the effects of heat conduction and convection included.

    Notes: A procedure for numerical approximation to two-dimensional, hydraulically-driven fracture propagation in a poroelastic material is described. The method uses a partitioned solution procedurè to solve a finite element approximation to problems described by the theory of poroelasticity, in conjunction with a finite difference approximation for modelling fluid flow along the fracture. An equilibrium fracture model based on a generalized, Dugdale-Barenblatt concept is used to determine the fracture dimensions. An important feature is that the fracture length is a natural product of the solution algorithm. Two example problems verify the accuracy of the numerical procedure and a third example illustrates a fully-coupled simulation of fracture propagation.     Notes: Finite elements with embedded shocks are used to investigate transient strain localization phenomena in frictional solids. In particular, we seek to elucidate the effect of rate sensitivity and inertia on the development of shear bands in solids subjected to impulsive loading. As in the static case, our results show that shear banding may induce severe softening of the specimen even as the material steadily hardens. As expected, rate sensitivity retards the onset of structural softening and tends to stabilize the post-peak response. It is verified that the static solution is indeed recovered in the inviscid limit. Under dynamic conditions, shear bands are observed to propagate discontinuously, arresting and resuming propagation repeatedly before linking up with the boundary of the specimen. The direction of the band is equally unsteady. In addition, multiple shear banding, with the development of secondary and even tertiary bands, appears to be a prevalent mechanism at sufficiently high impact velocities.

    Notes: A numerical procedure is presented for the downdrag analysis of group piles which penetrate a consolidating upper soil layer to socket into a firm bearing stratum of finite stiffness. The settlement of the consolidating upper soil layer under a surcharge load is estimated using Terzaghi's one-dimensional consolidation theory. Parametric solutions are presented to show the influence of various parameters on the performance of the socketed pile groups in terms of the development of the induced downdrag forces and associated pile head settlements. In general, pile-soil-pile interaction has the beneficial effect of reducing the downdrag forces and settlements of the group piles when compared to the corresponding single pile values, provided that the soil settlements are not so large as to cause full slippage at the interface in all the piles. Reasonable agreement is obtained between the theoretical and experimental results for pile groups subjected to negative skin friction.

    Notes: In this paper the stability of layered, anisotropic, hypoelastic media under initial stress is investigated. The bifurcation problem is formulated and solved numerically by use of a semi-analytical transfer matrix method. An alternative analytical approach in dealing with inhomogeneous media is developed by representing a periodically layered medium as a homogeneous Cosserat continuum. The Cosserat-continuum approach is validated against the numerical transfer matrix solution.

    Notes: In this paper the stress and moment stress distribution in a periodically layered half plane due to an arbitrary surface loading are derived. The bending stiffness of each layer is considered within the framework of Cosserat's continuum theory. Special emphasis is given to the case when the shear modulus of the one type of layer is much smaller than that of an adjacent layer. Results are illustrated for the case of a strip loading.

    Notes: A double-porosity model is used to describe the oscillatory gas motion and associated contaminant transport induced by cyclical variations in the barometric pressure at the surface of a fractured porous medium. Flow along the fractures and within the permeable matrix blocks is locally one-dimensional. The interaction between fractures and blocks includes seepage of fluid as well as diffusion of contaminant. To guard against artificial numerical diffusion, the FRAM filtering remedy and methodology of Chapman is used in calculating the advective fluxes along fractures and within blocks. The entire system of equations, including the fracture-matrix interaction terms, is solved by a largely implicit non-iterative algorithm which remains stable and conservative even when the computational time step is large compared to the cross-block transit time of pressure waves. The numerical accuracy is tested by comparison with exact solutions for oscillatory and unidirectional flows, some of which include diffusion interaction between the fracture and the matrix. The method is used to estimate the rate of vertical transport of radioactive gases through the rubblized chimney produced by an underground nuclear explosion.

    Notes: Progressive failure in long natural clay slopes with an underlying weak shear zone is studied. The clay slope is assumed to be elastic-perfectly plastic, whereas the shear zone may have an elastic-plastic strain softening behaviour. The failure will occur due to the development of large shear deformations in the weak zone. The general behaviour, including the possibility of progressive failure, can be studied by the use of a one-dimensional finite element model. Other interesting matters which can be studied are critical load, critical disturbance and critical length of the slope. Numerical examples show the overall behaviour due to different residual shear strengths of the weak layer, end disturbance or change of pore pressure in the weak layer. Although simple, the proposed finite element model provides a practically applicable tool for the prediction of whether progressive failure will occur and in which manner the local failure will propagate.

    Notes: A probabilistic model for stability analysis of a deepwater gravity-based platform foundation is defined, based on theory for wave loading in conjunction with conventional slip surface considerations. The model accounts for uncertainties in loading as well as in soil properties, and model uncertainties are also considered. The model is updated through in-service measurements of some of the governing variables, and measurement uncertainties are included. The practical application of the model is illustrated by presentation of calculations for a typical foundation. Probability calculations are performed by first-order reliability methods.
