Description / Table of Contents: Limiting cases of the reaction kinetics during simultaneous scaling and decarburization of iron-carbon-alloysLimiting cases for the reaction progress of simultaneous scaling and decarburizing of iron-carbon alloys in oxidizing atmospheres are discussed. The rate laws for diffusion-controlled carbon oxidation and simultaneous parabolic scaling are presented. These laws are compared with experimental results. The results agree well with the theoretically predicted ones. Further more, the rate laws for diffusion-controlled carbon oxidation and simultaneous time-linear scaling are derived in order to create a basis for quantitative interpretation of experiments of the oxidation of iron-carbon alloys in carbon dioxide, which will be presented in a later publication.

Description / Table of Contents: Hot gas corrosion and creep strength of a nickel base alloy in close-to-operating conditions at 750 to 950°CCreep rupture tests of the nickel base alloy René-41 in JP 4 hot gas stream and in air atmosphere show a significant decrease in the creep strength. Dotations of the hot gas with synthetic sea salt cause a more extensive decrease of the creep strength. Metallographic, scanning electron microscopic and microanalytical investigations yield comparable structure conditions and protective layer configurations under the stress of air and exhaustion gas atmosphere. The creep behaviour shows characterizing dependence of the surrounding medium. Within corrosive atmosphere there is no stationary region at the creep curves. Components of the power fuel diffuse into the material and cause ductile grain boundary coverings, which cause premature break of the material. By means of Auger microanalysis increased concentrations of sulphur could be proved in regions close to the surface.

Description / Table of Contents: Investigation into corrosion behaviour of zirconium alloys. IV-Pitting behaviour of zirconium alloysElectrochemical investigations into the resistance of a number of Zr-alloys in different solutions against pitting corrosion have shown that additions of Va- and VIa-group metals and in particular Ti improve the resistance of pure Zr. Metals forming local elements decrease pitting corrosion resistance. Minor amounts of Fe, Ni and Cr have practically no influence. The pitting corrosion resistance of Zr and its alloys decreases with increasing concentration of chloride ions in the solutions. Additions of SO4-ions retard the beginning of the pitting but do not shift the pitting corrosion potential. NO3-ions on the other hand produce a real inhibition. Newly developed methods for the quick determination of the pitting corrosion potential were very useful for the described investigations.

Description / Table of Contents: Automatic measuring of contact corrosion parameters and their interpretation by means of polarization diagramsTo evaluate the danger of contact corrosion on coupled dissimilar metals, the corrosion potentials of the concerned metals, the mixed corrosion potential and the current between the galvanic couple are of interest. A test stand with 6 sets has been developed to determine these values simultaneously and automatically from 6 variations of metal couple electrolyte/electrolyte's condition/temperature. Every set is equipped with two electrolytic cells. One cell is for measuring the corrosion potentials of the two metal probes in an open circuit; in the other cell an identical metal couple is arranged in a short circuit, so that the mixed potential and the current of the contact couple can be monitored. The values are called in sequence in a pre-selected manner by a scanning unit and are then recorded. From couples obtained from combinations of mild steel, CrNiTi-steel, NiCrFe-alloy, and Molybdenum alloy (0,5 Ti and 0,1% Zr), the mild steel proved to be always the least noble whilst the Molybdenum alloy was the most noble; this was true in both alcaline and acid electrolytes. By plotting the measured values on a polarization diagram, a survey of the possible contact corrosion behaviour in several systems may be obtained together with information on the corrosion mechanisms occurring.

Description / Table of Contents: Behaviour of powder coatings on metallic surfacesThe potential applications for powder coatings are steadily increasing. The type of powder coating which may be used depends, among others, from the type of substrate. The behaviour of powder coatings has been studied on degreased steel, phosphate coated steel, hot dip galvanized steel, steel with an electrolytic zinc coating and aluminium. The test methods included the salt spray test (ASTM B-117-61), the alternating condensation test in humid atmosphere (DIN 50 018), the general behaviour in the open air and determination of the technological film properties. The powder coating materials included materials based on epoxy resins, polyester resins (with carboxyl and hydroxyl groups, crosslinked with epoxy and amino resins and polyglycidyl compounds, in particular anhydrides), further polyurethane and acrylic resins. It has been shown that in particular carboxylic polyesters with polyglycidyl compounds and hydroxylic polyesters cross-linked with anhydrides have the greatest potential while the outlook for polyurethanes seems restricted because of considerable quantities of caprolactam being liberated. Acrylate powders, on the other hand, are generally not up to the German quality requirements. Epoxy powders containing major proportions of epoxy resins will probably be used only in those cases where chalking and yellowing resistance of the coatings is not imperative, or when corrosion resistance is the major requirement.

Description / Table of Contents: Electrochemical behaviour of materials in sulfide containing mediaThe corrosion behaviour of metallic materials in waters containing hydrogen sulfide and considerable chloride amounts (130 g/l) depends on composition and structure of the materials (ferrous and nonferrous) as well as on the gas contents (in particular hydrogen) in the medium. Electrochemical measurements show that several materials exhibit to passivation ranges (-500 m V and -200 m V) the latter being characteristic of materials having better corrosion resistance.

Description / Table of Contents: Beziehung zwischen Duplex-Oxidation und Gefügestabilität nichtrostender austenitischer StähleProben nichtrostender austenitischer Stähle verschiedener Herkunft wurden thermischer Wechselbeanspruchung ausgesetzt.
Notes: Samples of austenitic stainless steels from various sources have been thermally cycled. Many materials exhibited a volume expansion on cooling superimposed on the normal thermal contraction, as a result of an austenite → ferrite phase transformation. Samples of materials which exhibited the ferrite transformation also show a period of rapid oxidation on re-exposure after cooling during the first autoclave shutdown of an oxidation test. It is proposed that the local volume expansion accompanying the formation of ferrite on cooling disrupts the initial protective oxide scale thereby allowing oxidation to proceed more rapidly.

Notes: The kinetics and mechanism of the reaction between iron and sulfur vapor were investigated in the temperature range of 250 to 500°C and sulfur vapor pressures of 10 to 300 mm Hg. The sulfurization of iron has been found to follow a parabolic law. In the temperature range 250 to 370°C the reaction product consisted of an inner FeS scale, and an outer thin FeS2 layer. The activation energy of this process amounts to 27 kcal/mole, and the parabolic reaction rate constant varies according to approximately the 1/2 power of the sulfur pressure. In the temperature range 370 to 500°C the reaction product consists entirely of an FeS scale. The activation energy of the limiting process in this temperature range is about 14 kcal/mole. The parabolic reaction rate constant at 500°C shows a sulfur pressure dependence according to approximately the 1/7 power of the sulfur vapor pressure. The mechanistic significance of the experimental results is considered in some detail.

Notes: High temperature annealing in a dynamic vacuum has been utilised to induce the growth of duplex oxide over the whole surface of stainless steel specimens. It is found that duplex oxide grows at a rate which does not obey a simple power law. The oxidation kinetics and oxide morphology have also been studied for a series of ternary austenitic alloys which cover a range of composition between 5 and 20% chromium.A model has been developed from the observations to describe the formation of duplex oxide and the subsequent formation of a “healing layer” which virtually causes the oxidation process to stop. This phase tends to form at grain boundaries and a relationship has been derived for the reaction kinetics which relates the reaction rate with grain size of the substrate.

Notes: The influence of sodium chloride on the atmospheric corrosion of mild steel has been studied. Samples covered with sodium chloride crystals (8 m̈g NaCl · cm-2) have been exposed to an SO2-free atmosphere at different relative humidities. The combined effect of sodium chloride crystals on a steel surface and sulphur dioxide in the atmosphere has been investigated at an SO2-supply of 1 m̈g SO2 · cm-2 · h-1 (1 ppm SO2). The corrosion attack was followed by periodic weighings. The corrosion products formed have been studied using the SEM-technique. On exposure of samples with sodium chloride in an SO2-free atmosphere the extent of corrosion increased with increasing relative humidity from 58% to 90%, interrupted by a sharp minimum at about 87% relative humidity. The SEM-studies showed that tower shaped corrosion products were formed at a high relative humidity while filiform corrosion appeared when the relative humidity was lowered. At 90% relative humidity more corrosion was observed with clean steel samples and an SO2-supply of 1 m̈g ·cm-2 ·h-1 than with sodium chloride crystals on the surfaces (8 m̈g NaCl ·cm-2) in the absence of SO2. In the combined influence of sodium chloride on the steel surfaces and sulphur dioxide in the atmosphere a synergic effect was noticed at 90% relative humidity. At 70% relative humidity no influence of an SO2-supply of 1 m̈g SO2 ·cm-2 ·h-1 on the corrosion of steel samples with sodium chloride crystals on their surfaces could be observed.

Description / Table of Contents: Corrosion protection in pipelines by concrete liningsCast iron and steel pipes of various diameters may be protected against corrosion by internal linings of cement mortar. This lining results in addition in an improvement of the mechanical properties of the composit. Within 28 days the mortar cures to compressive strength between 700 to 1000 kg/cm2 and tensile flex strength exceeding 100 kg/cm2; even when the metal tube is damaged a high pressure resistance is maintained. Adhesion between lining and metal improves with time: green cement is rather porous, so that water may penetrate to the metal; calcium hydroxide from the cement and ferric hydrates formed on the metal surface are incorporated in the concrete so that good adhesion results. Sulfate-resistant special grades have shown to be resistant in waste water containing up to 3000 mg/l sulfate and having pH-values down to 4,5 for short times.

Description / Table of Contents: On the corrosion of binary CuAl alloys in sulfuric acidThe corrosion of binary CuAl-Alloys with Al-concentrations up to 16.5 w/o was investigated after different heat treatments in 1N sulfuric acid at 25°C. The corrosion behaviour of the various phases was characterized by potentiodynamic polarization curves and by long term potentiostatic tests combined with metallographic investigations of corroded electrodes. Within a limited potential range the results confirm the excellent corrosion resistance of the α-phase and the effect of dealuminization of all other phases. The origin of these differences in corrosion behaviour is discussed.

Notes: Concentration profiles of chromium, maganese and iron radioactive tracers through a duplex oxide grown on 316 stainless steel have been obtained after a diffusion anneal at 1273 K using the serial sectioning technique. The iron tracer diffused normally in both inner and outer oxides of the duplex scale. The concentration of the chromium and manganese tracers increased with increasing penetration into the outer Fe3O4 layer but showed a normal profile in the inner spinel. The diffusion coefficients obtained from the profiles were in the range 6 × 10-12 - 3 × 10-11 cm2 sec-1 for diffusion in the spinel phases.

Description / Table of Contents: Potential dependence of the corrosion fatigue of high strength sheet piling steel in salt waterCathodic protection of high strength steel, grade X 65, against corrosion fatigue (25 Hz) is not effective in seawater. An influence of hydrogen is assumed because hydrogen embrittlement occurs at slow strain-rates (not a constant load) under the condition of cathodic hydrogen evolution. The potential dependency of corrosion fatigue at 5 Hz was investigated with notched and smooth electropolished tensile specimens. The notched specimens showed a slight decrease of the number of cycles to failure with decreasing potential. The polished smooth specimens displayed cathodic protection. The results of the investigation can be explained by recent publications as an participation of hydrogen embrittlement, which happens only at critical strain rates and is dependent on the amount of straining, the frequency and the surface of the specimen.

Description / Table of Contents: Investigations on the influence of inhibitors on hydrogen embrittlement of mild steel in hydrochloric acidThe influence of four commercially available inhibitors as well as their main effective components on the corrosion behaviour of mild steel in 16 and 32% hydrochloric acid was investigated by potentiokinetic polarisation measurements, electrochemically controlled measurements of hydrogen permeation and by estimating the rate of mass loss. The inhibitors showed different, yet positive effects on the inhibition of the permeation of cathodically produced hydrogen. The best results were found with benzylchinolinium chloride as inhibitor. Particularly in acids containing hydrogen sulfide propargylalcohol turned out to be a poor inhibitor of hydrogen permeation. Under these conditions the addition of propargylalcohol to quart. ammonium salts even decreased their good effectiveness as single components. The fact that the effectiveness for the inhibition of hydrogen permeation often diminished in the course of short periods was not due to a simultanous increase of the corrosion rate.

Notes: An attempt has been made to determine the applicability of Stern's (or polarisation resistance) method for obtaining a reliable evaluation of the instantaneous rate of atmospheric corrosion. The tests carried out so far have revealed a good agreement between electrochemically obtained information on the influence of various corrosion factors and their real effect on the attack of metals when exposed to the atmosphere.

Notes: Some aliphatic and aromatic aldehydes have been studied as corrosion inhibitors for 3S aluminium (Al-Mn alloy) in KOH solutions. At constant alkali concentration the inhibitor efficiency increases with the concentration of the inhibitor, the order of efficiency in 0.1 M KOH + 1.0% inhibitor being: paraldehyde (13.3%) 〈 formaldehyde ≦ propionaldehyde 〈 crotonaldehyde 〈 furfuraldehyde 〈 vanillin 〈 salicylaldehyde (74.8%); 0.5% benzaldehyde and 0.1% cinnamicaldehyde gave efficiencies of only 19.3% and 18.5%, respectively. The aldehydes appear to act by adsorption on the metal surface, preferably through the oxygen atom. The inhibitive efficiency of paraldehyde increases with the alkali concentration, the duration of immersion and the temperature; that of formaldehyde, cinnamic aldehyde, furfuraldehyde (and crotonaldehyde) increases with alkali concentration and time; that of salicylaldehyde and vanillin increases with time as well as with temperature, while the efficiency of propionaldehyde and benzaldehyde increases with alkali concentration. The activation energy for the corrosion process is generally higher in inhibited than in plain alkali in the case of formaldehyde, propionaldehyde, crotonaldehyde, benzaldehyde, cinnamicaldehyde and furfuraldehyde; with other inhibitors the E values are lower.Except vanillin and paraldehyde, all the inhibitors increase the corrosion potential of Al in 0.1 M KOH suggesting polarization of local anodes. The inhibitor efficiencies calculated from extrapolation of cathodic Tafel lines are in agreement with weight loss efficiencies.

Description / Table of Contents: Inhibition of the corrosion of iron in aqueous solutionsThe inhibition effect of propan(1,3)-biphosphonic acid and hexan (1,6)-biphosphonic acid on the corrosion of highly pure iron (polycrystalline, recrystallized) in aqueous sulfate solutions in the range 4 ≤pH ≤6 in presence and absence of oxygen has been studied at T = 298 K. Steady state and cyclic voltammetric measurements on rotating disc electrodes have been carried out. Both substances act as interface inhibitors. Their measured inhibition effects at the corrosion potentials are relatively low. The inhibition mechanism is discussed on the basis of kinetic data and the well known anodic iron dissolution mechanism.

Notes: Up to this time all the methods to measure the corrosion rate of reinforcing steels embedded in hardened concrete have been of the destructive type, which requires much time and materials and makes the full scale study of the phenomenon difficult. The authors have applied the polarization resistance method to bars embedded in hardened mortar and immersed in Ca(OH)2-saturated solution, and have found an acceptable agreement between the gravimetric and the electrochemical weight loss data.

Description / Table of Contents: Corrosion inhibitors 22 (1) - Influence of pH, oxygen, added ions, type and concentration of acids on the corrosion of aluminiumCorrosion of aluminium in the presence of oxygen is practically independent from the pH and proceeds with oxygen consumption and hydrogen evolution. This behaviour is found in a solution of acetate buffer with sodium chloride as well as in inorganic (nitric, sulfuric, phosphoric, hydrochloric) acids as in organic acids. In the case of the latter the results are not as clear; in acetic acid the corrosion rate is not influenced by sodium chloride and the same applies to formic acid. While oxalic acid gives rise to hydrogen evolution in the presence of sodium chloride only and citric acid does not give rise to any hydrogen evolution. The solution which appears to be optimum for testing organic inhibitors of aluminium corrosion is unaqueous 1 N hydrochloric acid solution with 2.5% sodium chloride under nitrogen.

Description / Table of Contents: Pitting corrosion of copper tubes and carbon deposits: ESCS studiesIt is usually accepted that pitting I is generally connected with the presence of a carbon film on the inner suface of copper pipes. Samples of annealed copper pipes showing pitting corrosion of type I have been examined and the solid products scraped off from the surface have been submitted to X-ray diffraction. Malachite, atacamite, cuprous chloride, tenorite and cuprite have been detected. Significant amounts of carbon were found by chemical analysis. X-ray induced photoelectron spectroscopy studies and ionic etching of the coatings on the inner surface of the pipes have shown that copper II compounds occur only in the outer layer. Cuprite is the main constitutent. Removal of successive layers by ionic etching proves that carbon does not form a continuous film but is almost evenly distributed across the whole thickness of the oxide coating.

Notes: The behaviour of Ag-Sn alloy and Ag-Sn-Hg dental amalgam alloy has been studied under potentiostatic conditions in artificial saliva and in sodium chloride solutions containing 0.2% NaCl (alone or mixed with sodium hydrogen phosphate). It has been shown that Sn and Ag as well as the intermetallic compound reveal themselves through maxima in the E/I curves and through the total shift of these curves toward higher currents. The role of γ2-phase in enhancing corrosion and of hydrogen phosphate ions (and of other constituents of saliva) in counteracting the aggressiveness of Cl- ions have been demonstrated.
