    Notes: An experimental and theoretical study was carried out to relate the extent of channeling in a packed column to the response in the effluent gas to a tracer input. When the response curve showed a distinct peak associated with a channel, it was possible to establish the flow rate and void area of the channel from only the response curve. The experimental data provided new information on Peclet numbers in packed columns with nonuniform void fractions (low tube-to-particle diameter ratios).

    Notes: Photographic observation of the disintegration of individual flocs upon interaction with a turbulent jet has been used to quantify the binding force of kaolin-polymer and kaolin-Fe+III aggregates.     Notes: Vacuum sublimation of cadmium sulfide for manufacture of thin film solar cells was analyzed. The sublimation unit consisted of a two chamber cylindrical source bottle having a rate control orifice and exit nozzle. Coupled heat and mass balance equations were solved using appropriate rate equations for flow in the free molecular-to-viscous transition regime. The model equations predicted that heat transfer has a significant effect on sublimation rate. Experiments were carried out over a range of temperatures with several rate control orifices and exit nozzles. Quantitative agreement between measured rates and those calculated from the model equations was obtained.

    Notes: The Tait equation has been extended and generalized to permit the calculation of densities of compressed liquids and their mixtures to a pressure of 68,950 kPa (10,000 psia) using only critical temperature, critical pressure, Soave-Redlich-Kwong acentric factor, saturation pressure, and saturated volume for a pure liquid or the corresponding mixture parameters for a liquid mixture. This correlation, together with the correlation developed by Hankinson and Thomson (1979) for saturated liquid densities, comprise COSTALD (COrresponding STAtes Liquid Density), an integrated method for estimating densities of nonpolar and slightly polar liquids and mixtures. The new correlation gave 0.446 average absolute percent error for 6,338 data points for nonpolar liquids, 2.57% error for 1352 data points for polar and quantum liquids, 0.369% error for 319 data points for LNG/LPG mixtures, and 1.61% error for all mixtures tested.

    Notes: Crystallization kinetics of sodium chloride have been studied in a Continuous Mixed Suspension Mixed Product Removal evaporative crystallizer at 50°C. A marine propeller was found to give a substantially lower nucleation rate than a pitched blade impeller under identical conditions.     Notes: A relatively simple and extremely versatile optical method of obtaining diffusion coefficient data known as Gouy interferometry was employed to measure diffusion coefficients in undersaturated and supersaturated aqueous urea solutions at 25°C. The use of laser light as a monochromatic light source in the interferometer greatly simplified the procedure for obtaining diffusivity data from the interferometer. A novel design of a real image camera was employed to record the interferometric data. Values obtained from the interferometric data for low concentration (0-4 molar) aqueous urea solutions were within ±5% of literature values.The diffusion coefficient was found to decrease linearly with increasing concentration up to the saturation point of the aqueous urea solutions, and to decrease drastically with increasing concentration in the supersaturated region. This behavior is similar to that observed in liquid-liquid systems near the consolute point (Cussler, 1980). It is speculated that this phenomenon is a result of molecular aggregation of the urea molecules in supersaturated aqueous solutions. Very little experimental data have previously been obtained in the supersaturated region due to crystallization problems. Supersaturated diffusion coefficient data are important in the study and design of crystallization processes.The solid-solute-liquid solvent binary systems urea-water and sucrose-water were modeled as a saturated solution solute-liquid solvent system in order to test various concentration dependent diffusion relationships. Two of these relationships, the Vignes and Leffler-Cullinan equations, showed improved correlation with experimentally determined diffusivity data for aqueous urea and aqueous sucrose solutions at undersaturated conditions.

    Notes: A linear form of the mass balance equation is used to determine how turbulent transport of mass to a solid wall is related to the fluctuating velocity field. It is found that at high Schmidt numbers the Reynolds transport is controlled by fluctuations of much lower frequency than the most energetic velocity fluctuations. The characteristic of the velocity field that emerges as being most important is the small frequency limiting value of the spectral function of the velocity fluctuations normal to the wall. However, the linear theory that is explored does not predict the correct dependency of the average and the mean-squared deviation of the mass transfer coefficient on Schmidt number. A nonlinear analysis must be performed to examine fully the mechanism of turbulent mass transfer to a solid surface.

    Notes: A gravimetric technique has been developed for measuring three phase vaporice-hydrate (VIH) equilibria. This technique has been used for measuring VIH dissociation pressures for propane and isobutane hydrates to temperatures as low as 241.4 K. Kihara parameters, based upon the experimental dissociation pressure data, have been obtained. Because the range of experimental three phase equilibrium data has been considerably extended, the parameters based on this data should be more useful in predicting hydrate dissociation pressures.

    Notes: When a small drop or bubble approaches a solid surface, a thin liquid film forms between them, drains, until an instability forms and coalescence occurs. Lin and Slattery (1982a) developed a hydrodynamic theory for the first portion of this coalescence process: the drainage of the thin liquid film while it is sufficiently thick that the effects of London-van der Waals forces and electrostatic forces can be ignored. Here the effects of the London-van der Waals forces are included. The resulting theory describes the evolution of the film profile, given only the bubble radius and the required physical properties. The inclusion of a positive disjoining pressure results in better descriptions of the film profiles measured by Platikanov (1964) for air bubbles pressed against glass plates. When the disjoining pressure is negative, an unstable draining film evolves and finally ruptures. Unfortunately, there are no experimental data with which to compare our predicted coalescence times.

    Notes: The transient thermal response of a power-law type non-Newtonian, laminar boundary layer flow over a wedge is investigated. Consideration is given to the case of a step change in surface temperature. Details of the transient heat flux and the temperature field are obtained and have been presented graphically. The range of Prandtl numbers investigated is from 5 to 1000 while the viscosity index was allowed to vary from 0.1 to 5.0.

    Notes: This theoretical study shows that a liquid phase can be developed in and passed through a fixed-bed adsorber during thermal regeneration. The liquid results from passing hot gas from the inlet end of the bed, where the adsorbate is desorbed, towards the cool outlet end, where condensation of the solute occurs. The stage model of an adsorption bed is applied to two examples, the regeneration of an activated carbon bed with adsorbed benzene using hot nitrogen and the regeneration of a 4A molecular sieve bed with adsorbed water using hot methane.

    Notes: Cyclic thermal regeneration of powdered activated carbon containing adsorbed sucrose was studied in fluidized beds at 1151° K and 101.3 kPa (1 atm). The regeneration process consists of three steps: (1) drying, (2), thermal decomposition, and (3), gasification of residual carbon with steam. The maximum restoration of adsorption capacity (98.5% recovery after each regeneration) was obtained when gasification removed an amount of carbon equal to the residual adsorbed carbon after thermal decomposition. It was verified that the time required to attain optimum regeneration could be determined from available kinetics data for the steam-carbon reaction. For our sucrose-activated carbon system this time was about 180 s at 1151°K.

    Notes: Knowledge of the local distribution of the light energy, in a photochemical reactor in the presence of an absorbing substance which reacts at a rate of order different from one with respect to the adsorbed light intensity, is important in order to calculate the mean rate of reaction and the design of the reactor. Here we report a simple method for the determination of this profile as a function of the concentration of an absorbing substance and we compare the results obtained with the models of emission from the literature. A semi-empirical model accounting for our experimental results is presented.

    Notes: Previous investigations of liquid-to-particle mass transfer in trickle beds have used non-porous particles. However, the applications of trickle beds have been for reactions or adsorption employing porous catalysts as adsorbents. In this study a method of dynamic adsorption with porous particles is developed. The procedure is to extrapolate the response to a step-function input of non-volatile adsorbate to a short time where intraparticle diffusion and adsorption do not affect the overall process.The method is applied to the adsorption of benzaldehyde from aqueous solutions in a bed of granular, activated carbon particles. Measurements were made for three particle sizes, in adsorbers of two diameters, at 298K and 1 atm. The gas flow rate had no discernible effect on the mass transfer coefficients, kLsaLs, over a superficial velocity range of 1.47 to 8.0 × 10-2 m/s, but kLsaLs increased with liquid rate. The results, correlated as Sherwood vs. Reynolds number, agree well with the nonporous particle data of Van Krevelen and Krekels (1948), but suggest larger Sherwood numbers than similar data from later investigations.The wide range of mass transfer results for either liquid-to-particle or liquid-to-gas in trickle beds seems to be due in large measure to the difficulty in reproducing the rivulent flow pattern of liquid from bed to bed.

    Notes: This paper is concerned with an important aspect of process control design - synthesis of the control structure. Synthesis of control structures has long been practiced by experienced control engineers, who relied on intuition, insight and judgment to pick a feasible solution from the vast number of alternatives that were possible. This paper describes a systematic procedure to generate these alternatives based on the cause-and-effect representation of the process. The final product is a set of control schemes from which the final system may be selected or evolved. The work is significant in that it is the first attempt to apply non-numerical problem-solving techniques to the problem of synthesizing process control structures. As such, it gives a new way of studying and teaching chemical process control.

    Notes: A model based on extension and secondary motions of striations in a deforming flow is used to predict details of the mixing and dispersion of viscous liquids. Generally, extension of intermaterial area and interfacial surface occurs in stagnation regions, and breakup ensues when the striated flow has left such a region or has time to form unmixing regions of smaller scale in the stretching flow. Complex criteria for the types of mixing anticipated are based on differences in viscosity, differences in density, striation scale, rate of stretch, and, for various degrees of immiscibility, interfacial tension.

    Notes: The separation of multicomponent mixture by displacement development is fully analyzed by applying the theory of multicomponent chromatography. With Langmuir isotherms it is possible not only to elucidate all the characteristic features of the process but also to derive analytic expressions for the critical value of the developer concentration and the plateau concentration as well as the width of each pure component band attained at the ultimate stage. A specific example demonstrates that the actual solution at the ultimate stage is identical to that predicted a priori by using these expressions. The bed length required for complete separation is determined by examining the wave interactions involved. This procedure is clearly illustrated.

    Notes: The multiphase flow models were used to predict pressure drop and segregation of particles flowing in a vertical pipe. To compare calculations with data, it was necessary to assume an effective particle size based on a coefficient of restitution and on inlet void fractions. Different partifle size distributions with equal average particle size generate distinctly different pressure drops and segregations. Contribution of solid interaction force is very important in accounting for the segregation of the particles in a vertical pipe.All models gave a reasonable prediction of the design parameters. The pressure drops predicted by the models agreed well with both high- and low-pressure experiments.

    Notes: A series of seven coals of different ranks and from various locations were heated in an inert atmosphere under relatively mild conditions to measure the rates of gas evaporation. Samples crushed to various fractions in the particle size range -6+50 U.S. mesh were studied at temperatures in the range of 150 to 300°C. The results show that: (1) most water is released at 100°C, evidently an evaporation process, (2) CO2 is evolved at 150°C and above, and (3) CO is evolved at 250°C and above. An interpretive model was developed to fit the CO2 production rate and kinetic constants were obtained. Gas evolution rates are independent of particle size for the most porous coals, but vary among coals, depending on both chemical composition and physical structure. A 15% loss in heating value was incurred during drying and subsequent oxidation when the pretreatment temperature was increased from 150 to 225°C.

    Notes: Both equilibrium and rate studies were made for the adsorption and desorption of Bovine Serum Albumin (B.S.A.), Fraction V, from dilute solutions using a new cellulose based ion exchange resin. Using the equilibrium data and a simple two-film theory to describe the rate data it was shown that during the initial perioid of adsorption the rate was controlled by film diffusion, after which it was controlled by intraparticle diffusion. The desorption was largely intraparticle diffusion controlled except for a very short surface desorption step. It is suggested that the model could be used to describe other protein adsorption/ion exchange processes.

    Notes: Previous studies have shown that heat transport by horizontal conduction in thermal displacement processes in porous media has a stabilizing effect on condensation fronts. This paper expands the stability analysis by also including the description of heat transfer lateral heat losses by conjungate (vertical) conduction. A marginal stability condition is derived in terms of a parameter Λ representing the relative magnitude of heat transfer by conjugate conduction. It is shown that lateral heat losses ask a significant stabilizing effect on the front. This effect should be important in thermal oil recovery processes such as steam injection and in-situ combustion.

    Notes: Fluid motion in an agitated vessel with an anchor impeller is characterized by flow in a horizontal plane induced by the vertical arms of the impeller rotating near the vessel wall. A numerical algorithm of the two-dimensional flow in the horizontal plane is established using an iterative method for the determination of the boundary values of stream function. The computational results of the velocity profiles and agitation power are compared with those of the experiments, and it is shown that the numerical method used in this study is very useful to analyze the flow past the vertical arms of an anchor impeller.

    Notes: A new method for tuning controllers on-line has been developed based on a single experimental test, a step change in controller set point. The set-point response data and analytical formulae are used to calculate model parameters for a first-order plus time delay transfer function. Controller settings can then be calculated using the model parameters and standard controller tuning relations. Simulation results demonstrate that the new method provides good initial values for PID controller settings despite gross modeling errors and unanticipated load disturbances that may occur during the experimental test.

    Notes: Overall heat transfer coefficients were measured for an instrumented horizontal tube of diameter 25 mm in the feedboard region above fluidized beds of 102 μm, 470 μm and 890 μm sand in a 0.25 m × 0.43 m × 3.0 m tall pilot scale column. The superficial air velocity varied from near minimum fluidization to 1.7 m/s. The instrumented tube was placed at different positions in a 16-tube bundle. The measured heat transfer coefficients were bounded for tubes near the expanded bed surface by the immersed tube values, and for remote tubes by the values for particle-free air in crossflow. The results are correlated within ± 12% by a simple equation which incorporates these limits. The results are in good qualitative and quantitative agreement with previous experimental results.

    Notes: When a small drop or bubble approaches a fluid-fluid interface, a thin liquid film forms between them, drains, until an instability forms and coalescence occurs. A hydrodynamic theory is developed for the first portion of this coalescence process: the drainage of the thin liquid film while it is still sufficiently thick that the effects of London-van der Waals forces and electrostatic forces can be ignored. The time rate of change of the film profile is predicted, given only the drop radius and the required physical properties. Comparisons are offered with the limited experimental data available.

    Notes: Detailed measurements of radial variations of turbulence intensity were made with a hot film anemometer in a concentric annulus of aspect ratio Ri/Ro = 0.0416 for a Reynolds number range 1,200 ≤ Re ≤ 3,000 using a Newtonian polyglycol water solution. Measurements were also made of excess entrance pressure gradients and the axial variation of pressure gradients.Based on the results of these measurements, it is concluded that the proposition of Lea and Tadros (1931), Rothfus (1948) and others that a transitional flow regime develops with a zone of turbulence near the inner core surrounded by a zone of laminar flow near the outer wall is false. The two-critical Reynolds number transitional regime proposed by Hanks and Bonner (1971) is verified to exist but their mathematical model for the interpretation of its cause is disproved. It is shown that at the lower critical Reynolds number predicted by Hanks and Bonner (1971) and by Hanks (1980) a transition does occur. It is conjectured that the new flow may be a type of complex laminar bifurcation flow described by Joseph (1976), although the present data do not permit a definite conclusion to be reached. This complex laminar flow in turn undergoes a transition to turbulent flow at a second critical Reynolds number, higher than the first, in qualitative accord with Hanks and Bonner's (1971) and Hanks' (1980) predictions, although the latter are not quantitatively correct because they are based on inadequate models of the transitional flow field.

A number of models proposed for analyzing this class of reactions have been reviewed with a fairly detailed discussion of the methods of incorporating structural changes which occur in the solid with the progress of reaction. The present status on the modeling of various types of complex gas-solid reactions is reviewed. Also the paper points out a number of areas in which future research may be needed.     Notes: Infeasible path optimization algorithms have been effective with equation-solving or simultaneous modular process simulators. Using these simulators, successive quadratic programming is applied to large nonlinear programs. However, the algorithms are not directly applicable to commercial simulators of the sequential modular type.Here an infeasible path algorithm is presented which can easily be integrated with most commercial process simulators. The optimization problem remains small (10 or 20 variables) and the user merely replaces the convergence block with an “optimization” block.A simple process example demonstrates the operation, effectiveness, and potential of this algorithm.

    Notes: Two models describing the laminar flow of a polymerizing liquid through a tube have been developed and tested experimentally. One model is a full finite difference solution of the balance equations. The other is an approximate analytical solution which assumes that flow ceases after viscosity increases about tenfold. The models are compared to two experimental cases: (1) the pressure rise needed to keep the flow rate through the tube constant and (2) the flow rate decrease when pressure at the tube entrance is held constant. The finite difference model is more accurate in the early stages of polymerization while the approximate analytical model is more accurate at long times. The models have application to runner flow in reaction injection molding, to nozzles in thermoset molding, to thermoset dispensing equipment and to continuous reactive polymer processes in general.

    Notes: A theoretical study was carried out to achieve a better understanding of the oscillatory behavior of a gas bubble growing (or collapsing) in a viscoelastic liquid, by taking into account both the hydrodynamic and diffusion effects. The Zaremba-DeWitt model was chosen to represent the rheological properties of the suspending medium. The finite difference method was employed to solve the governing system equations.The computational results show that, in the case of very fast diffusion (i.e., constant bubble pressure), the oscillatory behavior of a bubble takes place only when the ratio of the initial pressure difference between the gas bubble and the liquid phase to the elastic modulus of the suspending medium is below a certain critical value. On the other hand, in the case of very slow diffusion, the oscillatory behavior of a bubble persists, regardless of the magnitude of the rheological properties of the suspending medium. Our study indicates further that the diffusivity of a gas has a profound influence on the occurrence of oscillatory behavior, that the elastic property of the suspending medium enhances oscillatory behavior while its viscosity plays the opposite role, and that even a Newtonian medium can give rise to an oscillatory pattern of bubble growth (or collapse), although it dampens out very quickly.

    Notes: A comprehensive model incorporating elutriation, entrainment and reaction is presented to describe the chemical reaction and hydrodynamics occurring in the freeboard of a fluidized bed. A comparison of experimental data on the amount of particles elutriated and the concentration profiles of SO2 and NOx obtained from the freeboard of fluidized bed coal combustion (FBC) by the Babcock & Wilcox Company with the calculation based on the proposed model to include the effect of interaction among the entrained particles is desirable. More experimental data with chemical reactions in the freeboard are needed to validate the model for applications to fluidized bed catalytic reactors.

    Notes: A gripping system has been developed to test uniaxial, 0° orientation PMR 15/Celion 6000 composites at elevated temperatures. The method involves compression of grit-blasted laminate between grit-blasted metal to give a non-slipping interface for load transfer. Tensile testing at both 316°C and room temperature indicated that deformation was elastic to fracture and that the variation in tensile properties for one laminate is the same as that for several panels. In addition, the tensile properties for uniaxial PMR 15/Celion 6000 are identical at 316°C and room temperature. For nominally 51 volume percent fiber, the elastic modulus is 119.6 GPa, the fracture stress is 1370 MPa, and the strain to fracture is about 1.15 percent. In addition, data are presented which indicate that the gripping system can be used for long term, elevated temperature testing of composite materials.

    Notes: A study was undertaken to determine the feasibility of using dielectric analysis as a means of monitoring and controlling cure of large closures during autoclave molding. In dielectric analysis, the dissipation factor (DF) and capacitance (C) of the sample are continuously monitored as a function of time, temperature, and frequency. Dissipation factor profiles were established for the suppliers' recommended cure cycle and for modified cure cycles, Good reproducibility was obtained in dissipation factor profiles on subsequent scaling up to production size (7 ft · 20 ft) autoclaves. Good correlation was also observed during production runs of fullscale closures. The effects of cure variables on the dissipation factor profiles and on the mechanical properties of the prepared laminates were analyzed for extent of correlation. Results of this study show: (1) dielectric analysis can be used to monitor autoclave cure of composites, and (2) within limits, process control may be feasible.

    Notes: The materials considered in this investigation were oriented-hybrid-glass-fiber-reinforced vinyl ester resin sheet-molding compound (SMC) composites. The composition of one material was 60 percent continuous glass and 5 percent random fibers, while the other was 45 percent continuous glass and 20 percent random fibers. The S-N curves for the two materials were determined in the continuous fiber direction. The fatigue stress levels ranged from approximately 20 to 80 percent of each material's respective ultimate tensile strength. The residual tensile strengths of the fiber-reinforced composites were not seriously reduced until near final fracture. The moduli of the composites in the fiber direction are also not reduced in any detectable manner. Damping measurements have shown that the damping increases during fatigue and that it is a sensitive measure of matrix and interface damage, generally debonding and cracking. It is shown by damping measurements that damage accumulates differently for two materials studied. The material with the higher percent of continuous glass appeared to be more cycle-dependent, while the other was more stress-dependent.

    Notes: Upgrading mica by increasing aspect ratio and coupling efficiency and combining mica with fibers has led to new uses as a reinforcement for thermoplastics and thermosets. The greatest growth in mica use has been in the thermoplastics, such as polypropylene and thermoplastic polyesters. Effects to be expected from using mica as a reinforcement include improved tensile and flexural strength, much-increased dimensional stability and heat resistance, enhanced stiffness and electrical resistivity, and reduced permeability to gasses and liquids. Major parameters that influence the composite properties include the mica flake size, orientation, aspect ratio and volume fraction, coupling efficiency, and crystallinity of the polymer matrix. Mica composites are molded from direct blends or are precompounded in the manner used for fillers. Mica-reinforced polypropylene (PP) is cost-effective in replacing glass-fiber-reinforced PP and may even substitute for glass-reinforced Nylon 66 in some applications. Markets for fillers for plastics are expected to grow faster than for the base polymers due to low cost, availability, and low energy utilization. Mica is expected to be one of the fillers with the highest market growth rate.

    Notes: Short glass fibers for reinforcements of plastics have been commercially produced for over three decades. During this period, they have been used in virtually every polymer, as well as in other matrices, such as concrete and plaster. Their tensile strength/cost performance is still three times that of Kevlar® and more than 30 times better than carbon fibers. Similarly, excellent modulus/cost performance and high temperature/cost performance can be achieved. This article gives a review of short-fiber composites: their properties and use. Included is a comparison of compounding vs. in-house blending, fiber/flake hybrids, and reinforced polymer blends. Finally, several new materials still in development stages will be examined.

    Notes: The influence of muscovite mica on the tensile, flexural, and mold shrinkage properties of composites with polypropylene (PP) were investigated. The best results in tensile and flexural properties at room temperature were observed for the physicochemical-treated mica followed by silane-treated mica. The mechanical properties could be correlated with the PP-mica interactions, as observed in the scanning electron microscope (SEM). In the present study, with mica aspect ratio equal to about 30, the optimum performance was obtained for the average flake diameter 80 ≤ d (μm) ≤ 280. Finally, the results of coloration and weathering are discussed. It was found that the PP/30 percent mica formulation has superior weathering characteristics over the neat PP resin.
