Thermal Decomposition of Ammonium Fluoroaluminates in Selfgenerated AtmosphereThe thermal decomposition of ammonium fluoroaluminates (NH4)3AlF6, (NH4)2[AlF5(H2O)], and NH4AlF4 was investigated by thermoanalysis and X-ray diffraction. With increasing pressure of the selfgenerated atmosphere the decomposition temperatures of ammonium fluoroaluminates increase and the range of existence of the intermediates is expanded. Above 70kPa the decomposition of NH4AlF4 is a multi stage process and (NH4)1-xAlF4-x, AlF3 · yNH4F, and AlF3 · zNH4F with x = 0,1-0,2, y = 0,1-0,2, and z = 0,02-0,06 are formed. The importance of these phases for the production of pure AlF3 is discussed.
Notes:
