Abstract Dianchi Lake is a famous freshwater lake in China, and also an important fishery base of Kunming City. Every year, more than 2000 metric tons of washing powder are poured into Dianchi Lake along with urban sewage, which endangers the fishery breeding activities. Toxic effect tests were carried out on incubation stages of carp eggs, newborn fish and young fish at different concentrations of Alkyl Benzene Sodium Sulfonate (ABS) liquid. It is concluded that the most seriously impaired stage by the ABS is that at incubation, which also causes young fish mutations and high death rates. The safe concentration of ABS for incubation of carp eggs is lower than 0.3 mg/1. This study has an important and practical meaning for the protection of fishery resources as well as for establishment and improvement of water quality standards for the fishery.
