Abstract We compared CT and MRI obtained within the first 3 h of onset of a cerebral infarct. Echo-planar diffusion-weighted MRI delineated the infarcted areas most clearly, and subtle low-density areas on CT were consistent with those shown to be abnormal by diffusion-weighted MR. The signal changes of affected areas on fast spin-echo proton-density, T2-weighted and fast FLAIR images were subtler than the low density on CT.
