    Notes: This paper discusses the impact ionization rates of holes in AlxGa1−xSb near x=0.06, where resonance impact ionization is expected. Resonance impact ionization did not occur in a range of the electric field we studied. We evaluate the impact ionization of holes at the spin-split-off band theoretically, and show that our measured result is reasonable.

    Notes: To elucidate the morphogenesis of cornoid lamellae (CL) in porokeratosis, skin lesions of three cases of disseminated superficial actinic porokeratosis and a case of linear porokeratosis were examined. By N-(7-dimethylamino-4-methyl-3-coumarinyl)maleimide staining, SH groups were present in the living layer of the epidermis beneath CL and irregularly disappeared at the bottom of CL, whereas SS linkages appeared in dyskeratotic cells in the living layer and in the irregularly shaped cell membranes of the horny cells. Epidermis beneath CL showed an increased and irregular involucrin expression. Ultrastructurally, the living keratinocytes contained many cytoplasmic vacuoles and had a smaller number of lamellar bodies than normal. Intercellular lamellar sheets were incompletely formed. The dyskeratotic cells and the lower horny cells contained many small vacuoles but formed a marginal band. The horny cells of CL also formed a marginal band and, further, a keratin pattern. CL may be formed by hyperproliferative atypical kertatinocytes which keratinize rapidly and irregularly and show defective desquamation due to the paucity of intercellular lamellar sheets.

    Notes: An adnexal tumor on the scalp of a 74-year-old woman is described. Histologically, the tumor was composed of cystic structures showing typical trichilemmal keratinization. The tumor cells in the cyst walls often formed duct-like or squamous eddy-like structures and occasionally showed vacuolation or poromalike change. Ultrastructurally, some tumor cells showed differentiation either toward the acrosyringium or sebaceous cells. From these findings, the present tumor is considered to differentiate toward various parts of the hair follicle including infundibulo-isthmus epithelium, apocrine acrosyringium, and sebaceous cells.

    Notes: A tumor of 60 years' duration overlying the sternum of an 87-year-old woman is described. Histologically, the tumor was composed of lobules and cords of epithelial cells with finely granular, eosinophilic cytoplasm. The epithelial nests were floating in large pools of mucinous stroma, separated by thin fibro-vascular septa. Cytoplasmic argyrophilia was seen by Grimelius silver stain. Positive reactions of the tumor cells were also found for chromogranin and neuron-specific enolase. Ultrastructural study revealed that the cytoplasm of the tumor cells contained two types of granules: neurosecretory and mucinous. From these findings, the present tumor is considered to be a carcinoid tumor with amphicrine cells, and the term ‘mucinous carcinoid’ of the skin seems to be appropriate for the diagnosis of the present case.

    Notes: Summary Cell differentiation in the human anagen hair apparatus was examined by lectin-binding histochemistry using seven different lectins: Con A, WGA, RCA-I, PNA, SBA, DBA and UEA-I. Con A and WGA positively stained almost all the cells in the hair apparatus. RCA-I and PNA positively stained the outer cells of the outer root sheath (ORS), but they did not stain the innermost cells (IMCs) of the ORS in the suprabulbar region. However, in the isthmus region, the IMCs showed positive staining with RCA-I, and more intense staining with PNA than that of the outer ORS cells. The ORS cells, including the IMCs, were negative with SBA and DBA below the suprabulbar region, whereas the IMCs became more strongly positive with these two lectins than the other ORS cells in the isthmus region. UEA-I strongly stained the IMCs, but not the outer ORS cells in the hair bulb. The latter cells became positive for UEA-I above the suprabulbar region. These findings indicate that the surface glycoconjugate distribution of the IMCs differs from that of the outer ORS cells. It is concluded that the IMCs of the ORS may undergo an independent cell differentiation process.

    Notes: Summary Skin lesions of three patients with inflammatory linear verrucose epidermal naevus (ILVEN) were examined. Histologically, orthokeratosis and parakeratosis were alternately seen in the acanthotic epidermis. By N-(7-dimethylamino-4-methyl-3-coumarinyl)maleimide staining, the horny cells in the parakeratotic epidermis showed a cytoplasmic SH pattern and a weak membranous SS pattern. The orthokeratotic epidermis revealed an increased involucrin expression, whereas the parakeratotic epidermis showed almost no involucrin expression. Ultrastructurally, in the parakeratotic epidermis, the living keratinocytes had prominent Golgi apparatuses and vesicles in the cytoplasm. In the intercellular spaces in the upper spinous layer through to the lower horny layer, an electron dense, homogeneous substance was deposited. The cytoplasm of the horny cells was filled with keratin filaments and contained remnants of nucleus and cytoplasmic membrane structures, and some lipid droplets. The marginal band formation was incomplete. Most of these ultrastructural abnormalities were not found in the orthokeratotic epidermis. There are both similarities and differences in histopathogenesis of the parakeratotic epidermis between ILVEN and psoriasis. A unique finding was the lack of involucrin expression in the ILVEN parakeratotic epidermis.

    Notes: Summary Patients with atopic dermatitis (AD) often present with a dry skin. To clarify the relationship between dry skin and lipid abnormalities within stratum corneum, stratum corneum lipids were collected from six AD patients aged 15 to 25 years and from sex- and age-matched controls. All major stratum corneum lipid classes were separated and quantitated by high-performance thin-layer chromatography/photodensitometry. Six ceramide fractions were also isolated and quantitated by thin-layer chromatography/photodensitometry. Esterified fatty acids of both ceramide 1 (acylceramides) and wax esters were analysed by capillary gas chromatography. The relative amounts of all the stratum corneum lipid classes including squalene, cholesterol esters, wax esters, triglycerides, free fatty acids, cholesterol, ceramides, cholesterol sulphate and phospholipids did not differ statistically between AD patients and controls. However, a significant decrease in proportion of ceramide 1, which is believed to be a carrier of linoleate responsible for a water-barrier function, and increased levels of esterified C18∶1 fatty acids (oleate) of ceramide 1 were observed in AD patients. On the other hand, the fatty acid compositions as well as the proportions of C16∶1 straight-chain component in sebum wax esters of AD patients were very similar to those of controls. These results suggest that a significantly reduced amount and/or structural alterations of ceramide 1 deriving from epidermal keratinocytes may be responsible for the impaired water-barrier function of the skin in AD.

    Notes: Summary We have previously reported morphological changes ofTrichophyton violaceum andMicrosporum canis in hair apparatuses in tinea capitis. To investigate the morphology ofTrichophyton rubrum in the human hair apparatus, two cases of tinea capitis and one case of tinea barbae were examined by light- and electron microscopy. The fungal elements, which were located in the lower keratogenous zone, showed non-septate hyphae in the outer part of the hair cortex. With the upward development of the hair layers, some hyphae invaded the keratinized hair cuticle and keratinized inner root sheath and were transformed into arthrospores. Some hyphae remaining in the hair cortex were also transformed into arthrospores, while other hyphae in the hair cortex did not survive, but degenerated. InT. rubrum hair infection, there is a distinct relationship between the morphological changes of the fungi and the hair cell differentiation as seen inT. violaceum andM. canis infections. However,T. rubrum displays unique morphological changes, which are different from those ofT. violaceum andM. canis, in hair apparatuses.

    Notes: Summary The ichthyosiform skin and the uninvolved skin of a 5-year-old Japanese female with Sjögren — Larsson syndrome were examined by light and electron microscopy to elucidate the keratinization disorder. Light microscopically, the epidermis of the ichthyosiform skin showed acanthosis, papillomatosis and hyperkeratosis. The horny cells had a basket-weave appearance. The granular cell layer was slightly thickened. Slight round cell infiltration and vascular dilatation were seen in the upper dermis. The uninvolved skin was histologically normal. Electron microscopically, in both ichthyosiform and uninolved skin, abnormal lamellar or membranous inclusions were present in the cytoplasm of horny cells of the epidermis. These inclusions appeared to be derived from some of the lamellar bodies and/or abnormal membranous structures found in the cytoplasm of spinous and granular cells. Mitochondria in the epidermal basal cells were more numerous in the ichthyosiform skin than in the uninvolved skin. These findings indicate that, whether the skin is involved or not, the epidermis of the patient with this disorder may always have a structural abnormality, which may be genetically determined. Local environmental factors may play a role in inducing the acanthosis and papillomatosis of the epidermis.
