Notes: Cavity effect on spontaneous emission lifetime has been observed through the continuous tuning of the emission wavelength by quantum confined Stark effect in AlGaAs Fabry–Perot microcavities. The obtained emission wavelength dependence of the exciton lifetime shows that the lifetime increases with the emission wavelength, specifically indicating a sharp increase at the cavity resonant wavelength. This behavior agrees well with the theoretical prediction based on the theoretical model of G. Björk, S. Machida, Y. Yamamoto, and K. Igeta [Phys. Rev. A 44, 669 (1991)]. Furthermore, we have also investigated the emission wavelength dependence of the transfer efficiency and obtained good agreement with the theory.

Notes: Summary Martensitic transformation behavior of alloys is studied under the arbitrary action of a thermal and/or a triaxial mechanical load-stress state by solving a transformation kinetic equation presented recently by the same authors. Numerical and analytical solutions reveal that the transformation behavior is almost path-independent. Lines of constant volume fraction of martensite are nearly parallel in the stress-temperature plane. Some new analytical formulae for martensitic transformation kinetics are presented.

Notes: Summary We investigated the haemodynamic dysfunction and secondary thalamic and brainstem atrophy in 24 patients with angiographically proven cerebral arteriovenous malformations (AVM) and no clinical history of cerebral haemorrhage. Cerebral blood flow (CBF) was measured by the method using either stable Xenon or single photon emission computerized tomography (SPECT). Morphological changes in the thalamus and brainstem were evaluated by magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Two factors are considered to influence hypoperfusion in the ipsilateral cerebral and contralateral cerebellar hemisphere and secondary atrophy of the thalamus and brainstem. One is the size of the nidus and the other is the involvement of the basal ganglia. It is presumed that continuous haemodynamic stress over a long period of time may cause irreversible histological changes in areas remote from the lesion, especially in the AVM which demonstrates involvement of the basal ganglia or a large nidus.

Notes: Summary Actin distribution and ultrastructure of the fission yeastSchizosaccharomyces pombe treated with cytochalasin A (CA) were investigated by fluorescence microscopy using rhodamine-conjugated phalloidin (rh-ph) and freeze substitution electron microscopy. Among the cytochalasins tested, CA was most effective and at 5 μg/ ml inhibited the appearance of the actin ring at the cell equator at the stage prior to septum formation and the accumulation of actin dots at the septum-forming site both in wild-type cells and the mutantcdc 11, which is defective in septum formation at restrictive temperature. Freeze substitution electron microscopy of CA-treated cells revealed the displacement and morphological alteration of cytoplasmic vesicles and dictyosomes within 30 min and the appearance of dense bodies in the cytoplasm. A sub-population of cytoplasmic vesicles and dictyosomes were insensitive to CA and maintained their original structure. An electron less dense layer containing filamentous material was noted beneath the plasma membrane and thought to be the area of heavy actin patches stained with rh-ph at the cells ends. These results suggest that CA disrupted an actin network that normally maintains the organization of the secretory pathway involving dictyosomes and vesicles.

Notes: Abstract Two different kits for the detection of serum cryptococcal antigen in patients with pulmonary cryptococcosis were evaluated. The Eiken test (the Eiken Co., Tokyo), which uses pronase for pretreatment of serum, was compared with the Crypto-LA test (International Biological Laboratories, Cranbury, NJ), which did not use pronase prior to testing. Cryptococcal antigen was detected in 21 of 23 patients (91%) with the Eiken test and in only 10 of 23 patients (43%) with the Crypto-LA test (p〈0.01 by Mcnemar test). However, the sensitivity of two tests was identical without use of pronase, as both tests could detect as little as 104 cells/ml ofCryptococcus neoformans and 10 ng/ml of capsular polysaccharide ofC. neoformans. In those serum specimens for which both tests were positive, titers were much higher for the Eiken test, but there was a statistically significant correlation between the two tests (coefficient correlation 0.79,p〈0.01). Cryptococcal antigen titer levels measured by the Eiken test correlated well with clinical courses. There was one false-positive reaction among 82 sera of non-cryptococcal patients. Pronase enhanced the sensitivity of the Eiken test, which appeared to be useful in patients with pulmonary cryptococcal disease, and its use may prevent unneeded lung biopsies.

Notes: Summary The levels of five neuropeptides (substance-P, somatostatin, cholecystokinin octapeptide, methionin-enkephalin and dynorphin) were examined in the brain and the spinal cord of rats 2 weeks after intracerebroventricular injection of 5,7-dihydroxytryptamine (5,7-DHT). 5,7-DHT injection caused a significant reduction of the serotonin level in all regions of the brain. The level of each neuropeptide except dynorphin significantly increased in specific regions of the brain after 5,7-DHT treatment without any decrease in their levels in any region. Since, coexistence and interaction between classical neurotransmitters and neuropeptides in the same neurons have been reported, both are indispensable for evaluating pathophysiological state of the brain function associated with abnormal neural transmission. The present findings together with previous reports suggest that neuropeptides act as neurotransmitters and compensate for the impaired function of the serotonergic systems.

Notes: Abstract The terrestrial isopod, Porcellio scaber, was susceptible to subzero temperature: both freezing and chilling were injurious. The level of cold hardiness against chilling and freezing showed different patterns in their seasonal variation. The lower lethal temperature causing 50% mortality, an indicator of the tolerance to chilling, ranged from-1.37°C in August to-4.58°C in December. The whole body supercooling point, the absolute limit of freeze avoidance, was kept at about-7°C throughout the year. The winter decrease in lower lethal temperature was concomitant with an accumulation of low molecular weight carbohydrates which are possible protective reagents against chilling injury, whereas the less seasonally variable supercooling point seemed to be associated with the year-round presence of gut content. Food derivatives may act as efficient ice nucleators. The different trend in seasonal changes between lower lethal temperature and supercooling point may be related to the microclimate of the hibernacula in subnivean environments, where the winter temperature became lower than the lower lethal temperature in the summer active phase, but remained higher than the summer supercooling point.

Notes: Abstract Pulmonary tissues from non-infected dogs, naturallyDirofilaria immitis-infected dogs and experimentally infected puppies, selectively necropsied after infection, were assessed using peroxidase-antiperoxidase (PAP) staining technology. Sequential sections of pulmonary tissue were PAP stained with anti-freshD. immitis serum, anti-paraffin processedD. immitis serum, anti-dog immunoglobulin (IgG, IgG Fc, IgM) sera and anti-dog complement (C3) serum, and examined for antibody, complement and forD. immitis antigen. The extent of alveolar septal thickening was positively correlated with infection status. Cellular infiltration was most evident surrounding obstructed areas whereD. immitis werein situ. Antigenic material (microfilariae, eggs, fragmented filariae) labelled by PAP was identified in the pulmonary arteries, alveolar capillaries and alveolar septa. Deposits of complement and IgG, presumably associated with immune complex formation, were also observed in some of the infected dogs. Identification of antigen, antibodies and complement associated with alveolar septal pathology suggested that immune mechanisms were active in its development.
